Hello, I just finished the paper 1 for English A HL (text comparison). I wrote about question 2(text C and D) but only after submitting did I realize that I referred to the two texts in question 2 as text A and B throughout my whole analysis. I’m extremely scared now that the examiners will mark my paper based on it being text A and B or penalize me in any way. However, I did write question 2 at the box on the left hand column of the response paper. If there’s any English A HL examiners or someone who have made this mistake or anyone who knows about this, PLEASE tell me if the examiners will mark it based on me writing question 2 on the box or based on me mentioning text …

Hey! I was wondering if anyone has the Prescribed List of Authors (PLA) and the Prescribed List of Translations (PLT) for English A: Language and Literature? Our English teacher left the school very suddenly, and we currently have no English teacher to turn to for any resources as of yet (I'm in DP 2)! I was hoping to get a head start on figuring out the subject myself, and it would be very helpful if I could get these two documents. I've been trying to find them online, but I can't seem to locate the files. Also, if you have any tips to learning English A: Lang & Lit, or just general tips for the IOC, FOA, Written Task or tests in general they…

I'm writing a WT on Language and Power and I decided to write an apology. It's supposed to be an apology from a person who said some ignorant, insensitive comment about a certain group of people (and got a lot of criticism for). I'm writing it as a social media post where I can also write down comments and show different people's reaction to this person's apology. In my rationale, I said that I'm trying to show how apologies can be used to deflect accusations and evade responsibilities. However, my teacher told me that my WT is too vague and that she can't see a clear topic that I'm trying to show. She is saying that I'm just imitating a text type but not having…

Hey guys, Today I got the results for my IOC (English A lang and lit SL). My teacher graded it 19/30. Is it good? What grade can I get for May 2020 Session? What can I do if I don't agree with the teacher's grade? Thank you!

Hiya, I've written a Language A Category 2 EE on the question 'How do Tan and Yoshimoto use symbols to deconstruct societal expectations on Mikage and Waverly’s journeys to self-actualisation?' pertaining to the short story "Rules of the Game" (written in english) and the english translated version of Kitchen (originally written in Japanese). Although I analyse the English version of Kitchen, I don't mention the translator, Megan Backus or anything about the Japanese version. I solely focus on Yoshimoto's purpose/use of language features etc and interpretations of the translated version. Do you see any problems with this approach?

May seem like a dumb question but all the stuff I see are people who are saying they failed the IOC and if they could still get a 7, but can you fail an IOC (~10/30), do an okay job on an IOP (~15/30) and still get at least a passing for the actual IB score (HL English)?

Hi. My teacher has recently told me that we are going to have to do the IOP soon, and I'm really stressed out, I need some help figuring out which book to choose of the 3 texts we had "covered" so far. I have no idea which one to pick of the following: Alice in Wonderland The Road Macbeth For me its hard so far as i feel like i should do 'The Road' but i have no idea what its about as we haven't covered it so far. There are so many more themes to cover or to focus on if i choose Macbeth and honestly it feels like I'm just lost with Alice in wonderland and have absolutely no idea how i would conduct a literary analysis of it.

The wt1 was introduced yesterday and we have to write it on the Great Gatsby, but I’m still deciding what I should do. I want to write about the homosexual undertones in the novel. I’ve come up with a few ideas: diary entries/letter(s) written by Gatsby on his romantic feelings for Nick (I could analyze his previous actions in the novel to show both my understanding and interpretation of the scenes this way), or rewrite a chapter in the novel about/emphasizing romantic ideas between the two. However, I’m still not sold on any idea and even heard diary entries aren’t good. (Is this true?) I have also given some thought on what would happen if Daisy was shot by W…

I do language and literature SL and recently had to submit a written task. We had to base our written task based on a poem we had studied till now. I chose the poem Mrs. Midas by Carol Ann Duffy - https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poem/mrs-midas/. I the events in the poem as a short story from Mr. Midas' perspective which was not explored in the poem, trying to provide an alternative perspective to what was given in the poem, however my teacher scored me a 12/20, giving me a 4/8 for the criteria regarding using the appropriate style for the task and having a good understanding of the content, claiming it was too basic and I had simply restated things alre…

Hi, I had planned to pretend to interview Bob Marley to ask about his attitude towards English, creoles and pidgins, and linguistic imperialism. The issue is that I am supposed to show how his use of language express his identity and he speaks in Jamaican English, so I am supposed to write his answers for the interview in Jamaican English too? Any ideas if I have understood this correctly? I would really appreciate any help!

HELP!!! FOA

Good day, I have to perform an FOA and I decided to use the Malala speech to analyse. I have been confused to whether this is linked to part 1 or part 2 of the course. So which part of the course would this particular FOA idea be more relevant to link to? Is the analysis of a speech supposed to be for part 1 or part 2 of the course? With which learning outcomes and topic (possibly)?

I have a question I want to ask. So, I have taken English A Language and Literature SL and we just finished our Written Task 1a. I did mine on part 2 of the syllabus and got a 15/20. Obviously since I still have my other two to write, I don't think I'll finalise which one I'm submitting to the IB but is 15/20 considered a good WT score? What's the definition of a good WT grade?

I was already 3.5k words into my EE when I stumbled upon this clause in the 2019 EE guide. The EE may relate to work students have already completed during the course, but they must also demonstrate relevant wider reading and individual study. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the topic of their EE does not overlap with any other work they are preparing for assessment in language A—for example, the written assignment in the literature course, or the written task in the language and literature course. Students risk their diploma if academic misconduct is detected. I intend to submit an FOA titled 'Class lesson on Rules of the Game' in which I…

For Paper 2 in English A Lang & Lit HL, my class studied multiple poems written by Philip Larkin and Murakami's "Kafka on the Shore". My question is: in Paper 2, we have to refer to two texts that we have studied in class, so, if I choose to cover "Kafka on the Shore" and Larkin, should I talk about only one of his poems? Or can I talk about a number of his poems?

Hey guys! My class recently did a few in-class Paper 1 samples, and I did absolutely horribly in them! I seem to always get the wrong main idea and impression of the poem that we get, and the teacher told me they were not convinced by the examples I used to back-up my main idea. So I was wondering! Does anyone have any tips for analyzing poems you have never seen before? I already am aware of the "Read the poem at least 3 times before analyzing" rule! What can I do to be as close as possible to the real main idea? Are there any works that you guys can recommend me to read to gain a better insight of poem analysis in English A Literature and Lan…

I have my IOP coming up in the next couple of weeks and I'm still pretty clueless as to what I want to do. I've been thinking about making a painting that represents Holden's character and just showing a sped up video to my class and stopping it at certain points to talk about what's in it and throw in some quotes from the book, but I don't know if it's a good idea and will end up being a good presentation.

Hi everyone! I’m currently choosing my subjects for the IB, but I can’t decide between this two options: HL: economics, business management, Italian A or latin SL: Maths, Chemistry and English LangLit OR HL: English Langlit, business man, latin/Italian a SL: maths, chemistry, Spanish ab initio I feel like the first one is harder, because there aren’t any “soft” subjects, but at the same time if I took the second choice I’d have to do English HL and I’m super scared of it. I’m an international student and I don’t think my English is good enough to take English at the high level. Spanish ab initio would be interesting though. …

Hello there! I'm very new to the IBDP and we're starting our first FOA presentations in about two weeks. We've been told to make a detailed outline of our FOA by tomorrow, and I'm still unsure of what topic and text I want to choose! So, I was wondering how to find texts to use for your part 1 FOA, as our book doesn't provide any good ones. Are there any good websites containing good texts? I've tried searching around for a bit, but I can't seem to find anything good... I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction. - Matt

Should I include a thesis statement for my Literature IOP if I chose to analyse and compare the interpretation of particular elements from different perspectives....? My topic is "How the feminist elements in the Goblin market would be interpreted from the perspectives of a 1st wave and 2nd wave feminist."? Idk I feel like there's no point in having a thesis statement since it's nothing like a commentary. This is kind of urgent since my IOP is next week and I haven't even started it hahah Thank you in advance

Hi all, In HL ELL, we were given a PDF version of the book "Ghosts" by Henrik Ibsen to read. I really liked the book, so I decided to write my WT1 on it. So, my WT1 is on part 3 of the course, because my topic was to write the diary of one of the main characters in Ghosts. So, I tried to put myself in his shoes, wrote what he would write, spoke the way he did in the book, and tried to maintain his character as presented in the book. Now, my questions are the following: 1. Was my topic fit for a WT1 in part 3 of the course? My teacher said it was okay, but I would like confirmation since he is new to the IB. 2. I only have a single reference througho…

So, I'm a bit stuck on what to write for my written task 1. I've decided to write a speech, and it has to be based on Part 1 & 2. However, I'm not sure about a couple of things: What are some examples (general ideas) of speeches I could write based on part 1 & 2? How do I connect the speech to the part of the course I'm covering? Some of the topics I can write about are: English as a global language Varieties of english Journalism If you know of any sites with info on written task 1 I'd appreciate if you could share it with me.

For my IOP (Individual Oral Presentation) in English, I am doing Oedipus Rex. My topic is irony, specifically dramatic/situational and literary irony. There are lots of examples of them in the text. 1) What would be a good thesis statement? What should I focus on? 2) How do these types of irony affect the reader? 3) What is the purpose of having them in the text? Any greater implications/ extensions? 4) Is this a good topic even?:) Thank you so much!

Hey guys! So I am writing my last written task for Language & Literature HL. And as it is task 2 I decided to make an analysis of an advert(s) and how they would change if the target audience changed. My question is: is it really allowed to analyze more that one advert-banner? So the teacher gave us a past paper where we had to analyse and compare and contrast between two texts. I kind of struggle with writing that because I had no idea how to build up on the analysis. I scored pretty poorly on that and I asked the teacher for some feedback and she told me that my text wasn't organised and that it was all over the place. So I was wondering if anyone could please tell me how to structure the text for analyzing and comparing and contrasting between two texts?

Right now, I'm in English LangLit HL and have the option to drop it to SL cuz I already have 3 other HL subjects. Hello! I'm considering doing an EE in English Lit and am wondering if Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card would be a good enough book to write it on? I've heard that it is studied by some schools in Grade 9 and so is inappropriate unless I come up with an incredibly good topic. I have some ideas and would like to know if they are appropriate: Applying psychoanalytical criticism to Ender? Comparing and contrasting Ender's game and an (undecided) Chinese classic of some kind?
