Is taking Ib diploma over ib certificate worth it for college? I know that for international schools(particularly in europe) Ib diploma is almost required, but I dont think there is too large of a difference for US schools.

Hello all, I am just got assigned the EE and was hoping if anyone could let me know if this is a good question for me to center my EE around To what extent was American colonization of the Philippians justified after the Spanish-American war? Thanks! Any and all opinions are deeply appreciated

Hey fellow IB folk :))! I'm currently struggling with picking between Physics, Biology and Theatre at the moment, and I was just wondering if it might be possible at all to ask any of you wonderful people who may be taking any of these courses for advice on what to pick at all?? I really enjoy both the sciences and drama, and love all of these courses quite a lot. I am considering taking a double major or a bachelor (or something idk yet) in science in university, and would prefer to keep my options open for many universities around the world (particularly ones in the uk/us/aus) (though it does look like I might be doing my undergraduate at least in my home co…

So, I'm in my second year of the IB Diploma, and it is very stressful. But I'm also doing the last year of High School of Spain (it is called “Segundo de Bachillerato”). I’m wondering if this happens only in Spain (doing both courses at the same time) or in other countries too. You all know that IB subjects are complicated enough, but I have 8 other subjects apart from the 6 of IB (a total of 14 subjects, I'm in HL Maths AA ). Anyone knows how to survive this? Because I don’t see myself doing (and passing) the May exams and the June exams (in Spain we have to do special exams in June to enter in the University).

Dear All, I found this forum to be very supportive and I have a rather unfortunate and desperate question. My son was doing well till mid yr 11 and then got into some video gaming distraction. He failed to hand in his CAS, and we were told that he cannot get his IB Diploma. Now he needs to take exams in May 2022 and we are really desperate to know what he can do with the IB certificates. He has realized his blunder is quite demotivated but still wants to do extremely well in his IB exams. He has taken Chem, Bio and German at HL and Maths, English as first language and Global politics at SL. Is there any hope at all for redoing the CAS? How can this b…

I am currently considering taking Eng B L&L as an HL subject and Mandarin B L&L as SL, but I'm not sure whether it is allowed by the IBO as well as my school. From what i know, a number of students in China and HongKong do choose the combo above. Needless to say, studying their mother language at a foreigner level in Mandarin B is an easy peasy to them and that basically means they got straight 7s all the time without even revising. However, I also heard some saying that the IB requires candidates to choose subjects from both group 1 and group 2 (only 1 LangA+1 LangB or 2 LangA is the available option). As far as I am concerned, if that's the case, it will be…

Hello everybody! I recently got offered a place in the IB DP program at Bayview Secondary School, and now I'm trying to find out more about how the courses work. I'll probably have more questions to ask soon, but right now I only have 1 question: Are IB courses different from the regular high school program, or does IB teach the same courses but making everything more "hard"? Thanks so much!

Hello, these are the subjects I'm planning on taking and I'd love your advice and opinion. English Lit HL (online) History HL Geography HL French ab initio SL (online) Biology SL Math AA SL - I have another post talking about this, I'm bad and dislike math but my school does not offer AI if you have taken or know anything about this course, please let me know if I'll survive 😭. I know you can't have a calculator during the first paper so does that section need strong mental maths skills? Is it a really hard course in general?
Last reply by gabi1738, -
My school only offers AA, and as someone who doesn't like math, I'm scared. Hopefully I can handle AA SL Math is my weakest subject, and I plan on studying International Law or something along those lines in university. Does anyone have advice, is AA SL really that hard? I know you can't use a calculator on the first paper so hopefully, you don't need strong mental maths skills in that section. I know you can take courses online but I think that will be even harder for math, plus I'm already going to take French & English Lit online. Anyone who has done AA SL please let me know about the calculator question regarding your exam.

Dear reader, I am currently a grade 11 student in Ontario who has never taken pre-IB courses or any IB courses for that matter. However, starting in my second semester of my junior year, I plan on switching out my regular courses for IBDP courses (HL CHEM, HL BIO, HL ECON or HL PHYSICS, or MATH AA SL) as a certificate student. I wanted to know the following: 1. How does SL Biology and SL Chemistry compare to Normal Ontario Biology and Chemistry. I heard that it would actually be harder to succeed in the Ontario equivalents compared to the IBDP SL equivalents. Is this true? 2. How will the transition be as I have never taken Pre-IB courses in m…

Hello. I have just started IB this year and I am having so much trouble with my Group 2, 4, and 5 classes. Here are the classes I'm taking: Group 1: HL English Lit A Group 2: SL French B Group 3: SL History Group 4: HL Chemistry Group 5: SL AA Math Group 6: HL Biology I am doing well with my group 1, 3, and 6 classes. It is my group 2, 4, and 5 classes that I'm struggling a lot with. I'll go in that order. I used to do really well in French class in elementary and middle school. However, I would argue that I began falling behind in high school since none of my teachers prepared me well enough for those classes. My biggest wea…

I have been in the IB science tutoring area for a while and know of bioninja for bio, but never found anything really for chemistry or any real questions for bio. I recently found Tiber Tutor: https://tibertutor.com It looks amazing, with notes, flashcards and questions. It really helped my students revise for upcoming tests so I thought I'd start a discussion on it here!

Hello all, I am taking the IB course (2020-2022 batch) with the subjects Comp Sci HL, Maths MAI HL, Physics HL, Biology SL, English Lit Lang SL, and French AB Initio SL. I want to apply to a US uni/college (in California) with my major being Computer Science. Just recently the IB Coordinator for my school has informed me that I need a good reason to take 3 sciences and no group 3 subjects (hence becoming an irregular IB diploma). Could someone help me understand what exactly is happening and what I need to do to get a good reason for my irregular IB course? I don't really need group 3 subjects for a major in computer science. Thanks.

I am in ninth grade and I am in the diploma program for IB but I am looking at the curriculum and think that it is not the one for me. I am stronger in math and science and the diploma program looks to have more to do with literature and how you think. I want to do something around engineering which is what my schools career path offers. I just want to know if it is truly worth it to switch out or is it the same type of curriculum? Will colleges still view it the same, and which do you view is harder? Thanks

Hi! I'm currently taking HL Math AA, HL Physics, HL Philosophy, SL Chemistry, SL English A Literature, and SL French B and I'm looking to apply to T10 US schools (Brown, Princeton, Yale, etc.). I'm thinking of switching from SL Chemistry to SL Theatre, but I'm concerned that this will affect my chances at being admitted into a Top US university, because Theatre may be seen as an easier course in their eyes. Would this have an effect on my chances, with all else being the same?

I'm a good student going to a school with a pretty decent reputation, and I want to go to a couple of state colleges that are known for being "above average". Not Ivy-League. Basically, ASU, OSU, WSU, maybe Colorado School of Mines. Computer Science. I have a 3.5 GPA, and a 1300 SAT, and a handful of glowing teacher recommendations. I'm a smart kid, but my grades suffered from lack of laser focus. If I'm applying to colleges today (early admission) and honors colleges, and I GET IN, what do you think the consequences will be if they find out I graduate without the IB diploma? I can explain it was because I started working professionally as a senior after school (which is …

HL Film (I know that this isn't ideal, but taking an art form at a higher level is compulsory in my school) HL History HL Literature SL Biology SL Malay SL Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations I'm not great at maths or the sciences, so keeping those at an SL level would be preferable. I haven't made my decision yet and am open to changing my current intended combination. Any thoughts on whether or not this is a viable combination for international relations or perhaps law? Cheers

Have you ever been in one? If yes, are you still together/why didn't it work out? If no, would you consider being in one? Just curious, because it seems to be the general consensus is that IB relationships = bad. Am I an anomaly here haha? I've been with my IB boyfriend for 15 months and we are quite happy together. There are 2 other IB couples at my school. One of them have been going out for almost 3 months and the other have been going out for 3 years (though they're on a break now and I believe are going their separate ways very soon...).

While I was in IB a friend of mine decided to do a Physics IB grade calculator, another friend then added Economics into the calculator, and then I decided to add as many other subjects I could. Ok, now that the necessary credit has been given to my friends I can now explain how this works. Most IB students wonder how much they need to get a 7, how close they are, how many points they need in the exams, given that they already know their IA grades, etc. With this calculator I hope to make it a lot easier for everyone to find these things out. You simply find the subject you want, then put in the amount of points in each component (e.g. Internal Assessment, Paper 1, Paper …

Hey, I'm going to start IB in September 2019 and so far my subject choices are: English B HL Geography HL Biology HL Chemistry HL Maths SL Polish Lit SL I was wondering if choosing English A SL and dropping English B HL isn't a better option. I would love to study medicine in the future but I'm taking Geo HL because I love this subject (and I've heard it's relatively easy) and then I still have the possibility to change my mind and study a course connected with Geography at the university. Dear all, I shan't beat about the bush. If I got a pound for every time I heard the words "didn't have a life" (or something to that effect) in relation to IB, I could probably buy my whole textbook list now. So, tell me about the daily life of an IB student! Now is the opportunity to pour out the thoughts and musings deep within your heart! Did you consume a lot of coffee? Did you learn to survive on three hours of sleep? Did your mental and/or physical health decrease? Were you incredibly stressed? Was your social life on hold or even gone? Was it all worth it? This is a factor in the pro- and anti-IB argument that I hear the most often, so I would absolutely love to…

I want to study business management or marketing at LSE. (bachelor's degree) My subject choice; Japanese A HL, Economics HL, Maths AI HL, Business Management SL, Chemistry SL, English B SL. The official LSE website says that the requirement is to get 38 with 766 from HLs, including maths HL (both AI and AA are fine.) Also, it says this doesn't guarantee you even if you are achieved the grade. (38) So, my question is, what score do I actually have to get in order to get into lse? Also, do you have any advice for me in general?

I'm 16 years old and will start IBDP from this September. For starting IBDP, I'm thinking to transfer school because my current school doesn't achieve high results (av. 32). I have already found a school which is perfect for me in terms of subjects and results (av. 36), however, some things make me not to be able to decide whether switch the school. Would the Bilingual IB Diploma be much of an advantage in Top University Admissions? I'm moving to a new school with IB as their curriculum so I'm rather unfamiliar with this. I'm half French so I know how to use French for daily conversations. I would be taking English Lang Lit and the other language being either Spanish or French. My teacher is yet to decide if I'm capable of French A. If I choose Spanish, I'd have to take it as Spanish Ab Initio. I want to study a new language as I'm somewhat familiar with French, thus I wanted to choose Spanish (Ab Initio), but the Bilingual Diploma sounds intriguing if I manage to do French A.
