Hello all I believe we are all studying hard for the May exam! I am sharing the same pain as well. However, I read the rubric for psychology's essays and I have to say that marks are easily obtained if you follow a certain structure in writing your essay. I wish we can all share essay structure techniques here and get feedbacks from others as well. Here are my techniques: - KNOW THE COMMAND TERM. I can't stress this enough. Every mark scheme will stress that, 'The answer satisfy the command term.' If you missed this step I don't think you will do well at all. How you break down the question and plan your essay are base on the command term. - Always plan before you writ…

Hi all, thought I would just upload the IB Psychology HL revision guide I made for my CAS Major. This guide isn't perfect but from the feedback I got from my teacher and people that are using it I feel that it is a very solid revision guide. There is generally evaluation for most of research and I have lots of supporting and counter research provided. I hope this helps you guys revise because I know Psychology is a pain in the ass to revise for. Please don't take this work and say its your own, I spent a lot of time on it. By the way, in case your interested the major sources I used are the Pearson Baccalaureate Psychology textbook, the IB course companion and the oxford…

So I thought I was all set up and ready, and did my IA recently. Let's just say it didn't go as well as it could. Several things went wrong. So I'm going to post them here so anyone else doing the IA can learn from my mistakes. 1. When you are recruiting people to be a part of your study, make sure you give them something physical with your information and officially take down their names and contact numbers. Make sure it seems like something that can't just be skipped if they feel like it, because apparently going to a Psychology study doesn't automatically rank as something important in peoples minds. I didn't do this and my partner ended up running around school recrui…

I've a question that has been bugging me since the beginning of the year, because as far as I have understood, we answer three short answer questions, one in each level of analysis, and write an essay. My teacher says that all short answer questions come from learning outcomes, but also that all essay questions are based on learning outcomes. But how does one distinguish between an "essay outcome" and a "short answer outcome"? Can anybody explain this to me? Is it simply a matter of how complex the question is? I'm confused.

I sat my IB Psych SL exam last year (anticipated yay!) and I have a fairly good understanding of how to structure a good response to P1 (which is pretty much the same for P2 as well). I thought I'd share. Before I start, I think it is imperative that you get in to the habit of planning your response - it doesn't take long, and it will save you!! It will make you organise your ideas logically and certainly improve the quality of your language. You will be forced to be prudent in your evaluation, and examiners will totally see that you know what you are talking about! The concise and general steps to planning and answering questions 1. Read the Q twice (or as many times…

Does anyone know a method to manually, not automatically, find the critical values for the Mann-Whitney-U-Test-calculation? Does anyone know which hypothesis the IAs are conducted with? Are they one-tailed or two-tailed hypothesis? Is it required to include how the critical values were acquired in the IA for Psychology Higher Level? If so, should the method of the acquistion of the critical values be included in the appendix with the calculations of Mann-Whitney-U-test or the results-section? When I calculated the Mann-Whitney-U-Test on the wepage www.vassarstats.net I got the critical value of the upper limit and lower limit to be 38 and 19 respectively fo…

My exam's in a few days, and I read on this website, that to get a 7, you need 68%, however from the graduates I spoke to last year, they said that the grade boundary for a 7 is 73%. I was kinda confused, so I just wanted to make it clear. Is it 68%? Or higher? Because it's the NOV exam, or 73%+ ? Thanks!

So, i was wondering - is there anyone out there who's managed to pull a 7 for either HL psych, or an A for a psych EE? If so, what did you find set you apart from most students? Was there anything particularly notable that you did? Cause in my school there has yet to be a HL student to score a 7 or an A in EE - why and how does this happen!?

Our school chose the Abnormal Psych option along with the human relationships option. For abnormal psychology, we only have to choose one disorder from 2 out of the 3 categories (affective disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders). I want to do PTSD and Bulimia, which are from anxiety disorders and eating disorders, respectively. However, I've noticed that my textbook has a lot more information on major depressive disorder (an affective disorder). Would it be a disadvantage to me if I choose PTSD and Bulimia, which I have less information about? Would my marks be negatively impacted? This textbook provides MUCH more information on depression than the two disorders t…

Hello, everyone. The command term "discuss" wants us to provide arguments for and againts to give a balanced essay, but how do we apply this to a question such as "Discuss validity and reliability in diagnosis"? Do we assess the use of validity and reliability in the studies that we use, maybe? All help appreciated!

In the syllabus it says we have to know two disorders from two categories; our options are depression and PTSD. However, in the learning outcomes it usually says that you should evaluate only ONE disorder. So, is it safe to learn only depression? How likely is it that in the exam it will ask us to evaluate both?

So I've been wondering how different P2 is from P1, other than content, of course. In terms of writing essay responses, is there any defining difference? Also, looking at the prompts from each section in the options, I feel like some of these prompts don't seem to be essay prompts judging by the command terms, e.g. "Define resilience." If this was P1, this kind of prompt would probably be an SAQ? Do these prompts get changed into long essay prompts on the exam, or are these prompts not going to appear on the P2? How much flexibility does each prompt have? I feel like I just lack general understanding regarding how P2 works...

As I found out that in IA, abstract should be involved aim, methods, outcomes, conclusion of the study, so do introduction. Can I just simply copy everything from the abstract? What can I do if the experiment is ended with results without any specific conclusion?

Hey! While studying for my psychology test I noticed that in the psychology book we use (Psychology Course Companion- http://hintaseuranta.fi/API/image/292391/jpg800x465) for each of the core topics there are extra sections titled "An integrative look at (e.g. criminal behavior/happiness/prejudice and discrimination)". The sections basically analyze a specific behavior through a biological, socio-cultural and cognitive perspective. There are, however, no learning outcomes directly related to these subsections... So I'm confused Do I have to know them and learn the studies? Can they ask something about these in the finals? Or are they just like extra?

Hello! This evening when I'm writing this, I'm as confused as I was the day my viewpoint of my Psychology teacher drastically changed. Yes, it was a couple of weeks ago, when my entire Psychology class were entirely taken apart by our Psychology teacher. We were supposed to get our valuable feedback for our IAs, in which we did, in an unexpected manner. One of the first thing we got to hear that the results from our first draft were extremely disappointing, and in fact, we had the "Worst result ever" on our Psychology IAs for the entire time my school has had the IB. Well, that's okay one may think, and it was by then. She was the one who knew things, and of course, no on…

Hey, For the option of developmental psych, apparently you need to apply the biological, cognitive and sociocultural perspectives when answering the questions. i'm wondering how you should go about that? I know the first point explicitly states, 'to what extent do biological, cognitive and socio-cultural factos influence human development' - so you'd naturally structure an answer that split ups and talks about the 3 perspectives. but would this kind of approach apply for all other syllabus points? for example, 'evaluate psychological research relevant to developmental psychology' - would you break THAT down into 'biological, cognitive, and sociocultural'? Additionally, …

Hey guys, I have a bit of trouble with IB psychology here. I am writing this post because its not fully clear to me how to write a good LAQ/SAQ (Long answer/ short answer). I have never obtained a 7 in my class, and I do not know exactly why. Can you give me tips on the structure of LAQ/SAQ? Should I include a thesis statement (if so, can you give examples for quesitons with different command terms?) ? What approach should be taken in order to get a 7? Thankyou very much!

Is anyone else doing Cultural Psychology for their option? We're doing it and I hate it. We're given some really crappy resources which are basically just blocks and blocks of text. Does anyone have any good websites or resources that they could recommend for cultural psych? Is anyone even DOING Cultural Psych? That's what I want to know. I don't know why my Psychology teacher chose it...it would've been a lot easier to do the psychodynamic or dysfunctional option...*cries* At least there are textbooks for them that are easier on the eyes.

Hey everyone, So in my school no one really gets a 7 in HL Psychology, in fact something like 3 in the past 5 years. I know that it is extremely difficult to get a 7 in psychology but has anyone out there done it? In all class essays and SAQs I have been 15-18 and 5 or 6s. Does anyone have any tips on how to structure their notes, essays, or other general tips for me and others out there in the same position? Thanks in advance, Jordan

Hey guys, I just wanted to ask whether it is allowed to use footnotes in a psychology IA. The thing is that I'm finishing my IA but the problem is the amount of words. I currently have 2100, which is 100 words over the HL limit of 2000, and I cannot seem to be able to reduce the word count any more. You see, I had 2700 words, but it was easy to remove about 500 by taking away some unnecessary paragraphs, and then I removed 100 more by going slowly through the IA and rephrasing sentences and paragraphs so that they would take up less space. Now that I've gone through the IA for so many times, there doesn't seem to be anything that could be removed. I can't ask help from th…

So I was looking at past papers and I saw this question in Nov 16 "Explain how one principle that defines BLOA has been demonstrated in one example of research" simple question right? Then, the mark scheme says "acceptable principles may include, but are not limited to: 1)patterns of behavior... 2)animal research 3)Biological correlagtes to behaviour..." What do they mean by "not limited to"? Aren't these the only principles in BLOA? Does it mean students can invent their own principles if they want to? Wouldn't that be very difficult to mark? What is an acceptable principle? Thx.

The Power of Sesame Street to Improve Reading Phillip is a very enthusiastic elementary school teacher who believes that the best way to improve his students’ reading ability is for them to watch educational TV programmes like Sesame Street. He wants to see if watching TV can make a difference. I have problem with writing SAQs and last time I wrote it it has been literally a disaster. Could somebody give me some instructions how to write it (I already read this SAQ and LAQ subject, but still have no idea)? Hey everyone! Tomowrrow is the Psychology Paper 2. I was just wondering whether using bullet points in the 22 mark questions would be a good idea. No, i am not planning to write the whole answer is bullet points, but within the essay, can some list type data be included in bullt point? For eg: A question like: "Discuss the concepts of normality and abnormality" comes and I want to include Rosenhan and Seligman (1984) and Jahoda (1958) in my answer, can I use a bullet point list to list the 7 and 6 criteria respectively? Including all seven critera in a paragraph is a bit inconvinient and may put off the examiner as well... Any thoughts or advise?
