Hey, So I was wondering if Seligman's study with dogs regarding learned helplessness progressing to depression actually belongs in BLOA. The site ibpsychnotes.com has it under the ethics question for BLOA and I use it for some other learning outcomes as well. I've been thinking about it and I'm worried that it may not technically belong in BLOA. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Hello everyone I am working on IA at the moment HL- Loftus and Palmer or Loftus and Zanni (I haven't decided yet). I am currently living in Georgia where the native language is Georgian. As you may know the IV is changing the questions. DO you think I would be able to ask questions in Georgian? and If I can't or decide to not, do you think the fact that the language in which the questions are asked isnt native to subjects (although subjects are fluent in English their understanding of the nature of words (connotation, the trrue nature of the and a- assumption that with the thing exists ) can influence the outcome? Big thanks

Hey guys! Hope your studies are all going well, just in the middle of my own psychology revision. Usually, when I'm bored, I look through psychology papers and blogs to see if there could be any new stuff I could add to my essays (predicted 7, really unlikely I'll get it though, oh boy) and thought it would be nice idea for us Psych kids to share any studies/research/theories, new or old with each other. http://neurosciencestuff.tumblr.com/post/81809491130/oxytocin-the-love-hormone-promotes-group-lying This is a study about how Oxytocin influences individuals to lie on behalf of their group. I thought it would be a good study to use for the 'Explain the effects of hormone…

So, as I was studying for psych paper 1, I came across this learning outcome in the Cognitive Level of Analysis: 3.6 Evaluate two models or theories of one cognitive process with reference to research studies. I had originally planned to discuss memory as my cognitive process, using Schema as a theory (studies by Brewer and Treyen as well as Bartlett) with the Atkinson and Shiffrin Multistore model (study also by Sperling). But I'm concerned... Should I use ONLY 2 theories or ONLY 2 models? Or, is it ok that I have used one model and one theory? Can I lose points for that?

Hey all, The last month and a half have been a real wreck at my college in regards to psychology. My psychology teacher has come down with something serious and hasn't been in for the last 6 - 7 weeks, and he's pretty much the only IB Psych teacher in the whole of my college. I've been practising SAQs by myself but I haven't had anyone around to check my answers and I'm really aiming for a 7. I was wondering if anyone would be able to check my SAQs for me and give me any tips to improve or things I should change about them? I'd really appreciate it, if someone could!

Hey guys! I'm wondering, for the the question "explain the effects of neurotransmitter on human behavior" how exactly are we suppose to explain? I understand that explain means give reasons and causes, but I just don't know how to answer this question. (Our teacher didn't went over command terms in detail even though I know they are super important lol) For example, I know that serotonin causes depression, and there are plenty of studies to show that, but I think I need to go deeper than that to "explain the effects". For the hormone question it is easier because for testosterone I can say things like testosterone is linked with aggressive behavior because males have t…

Hello, I am sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find a specific answer. So I read in my Psych book that for HL students, it is recommended that the experiment they use is changed a little bit. Is this necessary? If I replicate the Loftus and Palmer experiment with the car accident and ask the participants "About how fast were the cars going when they hit/smashed each other?", thus not changing it from the original, will the examiner take out points or something? I am thinking of adding a few more leading questions maybe for the "smashed" group. My teacher told me that it doesn't matter if it is identical but I want your opinion as well. Thanks!

Hi there, With the syllabus point: 'discuss factors influencing conformity' - I discuss Normative, Informational and Social Identity Theory with studies - Asch (1951), Sherif (1935) and Tajfel (1971). However, in the markscheme for this point it doesn't specify these influences but rather culture, groupthink, risky shift, minority influence and group size. Are the factors that I talk about still acceptable? Or should I change to something that the markscheme specifies? Thanks!

for my IA I replicated Loftus and Palmer's experiment. I have had two different psychology teachers guiding me. One of them suggested to use unrelated t-test, as my data was interval/ratio. However, other teacher who actually marked my draft gave me 0 points for "Result" since in her opinion my data was ordinal and I had to use Mann-Whitney test. Whom should I trust? 22 participant, independent measures design

I just wanted to ask, how would I go about answering a question like 'Discuss the use of technology in investigating cognitive processes'? Technology would be brain-imaging technology and cognitive processes would be memory, but i'm unsure how to actually discuss this question. I don't know how I would use my studies effectively. The studies that I would use would be Draganski (2004), Wager et al (2008) and Maguire (2000). In this question would I be mainly concentrating on the strengths or weaknesses of using brain-imaging technology? Thanks.

Hi, I'm a 1st year IB student who is taking Economics HL. So this is the second semester, about 3rd quarter, and I'm deciding to change to Psychology HL, just because my Econ teacher is really bad and he often doesn't know what he is doing. I won't care if this subject was not Economics, because other courses don't require so much help from the teachers but I think in Economics teachers are very important.. And if I move to Psych HL, will I be able to catch up if I try hard enough? I heard that Psych is mostly about memorizing terms and applying it with the concepts, and I'm kinda confident with it cuz I'm confident at memorizing things.. Thanks!

Hey everyone, So in my school no one really gets a 7 in HL Psychology, in fact something like 3 in the past 5 years. I know that it is extremely difficult to get a 7 in psychology but has anyone out there done it? In all class essays and SAQs I have been 15-18 and 5 or 6s. Does anyone have any tips on how to structure their notes, essays, or other general tips for me and others out there in the same position? Thanks in advance, Jordan

I state my hypothesis as two-tailed, but than I predict that " memory will be distorted depending on which schema will be activated. The verb “contacted” is associated with slower speed compared to “smashed into”. " does it mean that I have to formulate my hypo as one-tailed? or it is ok with two-tailed? Null Hypothesis: there will be no difference between estimated speed in the control condition where the verb is “contacted” and the experimental condition where the verb is “smashed into”. Experimental Hypthesis: there will be a significant difference between estimated speed in the control condition where the verb is “contacted” and the experimental condition where the ve…

Hey guys, I need some advice regarding my Psych HL IA. I've finished the most parts of the writeup of my report (it was quite a pain, took me a few days) and was feeling relieved until I realised I forgot the word count. Turns out I wrote 2700++ words. As I'm HL, my word limit is 1500-2000. So I've currently successfully cut down to 2130 words. No easy feat because I kept feeling that I'm cutting out important stuff. Are there any easier ways to help me cut down my words? What I want to ask is if the stuff under tables and graphs are counted into the word count? Such as Table 1: Table showing the mean and standard deviation for the results obtained in testing the exper…

Hey guys again, I have another question to ask regarding the Psych IA. In a sample work that got high marks, the student added footnotes on the research studies he mentioned in the introduction and discussion parts. Is this necessary? I have seen other IAs that only include references to appendices in the footnotes, like refer to appendix ii for a sample of consent form etc. So is it necessary to include sources of studies in the footnotes? Will marks be deducted or overall impression be not good if I didn't add them? Thanks!

I have finished my Psychology HL Internals, did a study based on Bransford and Johnson's study on schema activation and memory recall. My teacher had suggested that I use Mann-Whitney U test for inferential statistics, as my data was ordinal in nature. Admittedly, I don't have a considerable understanding of inferential statistics yet. I recently saw that for recall from memory, the data collected was actually interval data, and that I should use Wilcoxon t-test. The source is http://tdixonblog.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/detailed-internal-assessment-guidebook-hl.pdf , some IB teacher's blog. I am not following it in blind faith, as it is just a blog, but the materials th…

I have to give in my final IB choices soon and I'm currently deciding whether to take psych or history at HL. I'm currently taking both Psych and History (at GCSE level) and doing better in Psych (A*/7) than in History (A/6). I like both subjects equally, but I think I also have to consider my final GPA and course. I also find History slightly harder than Psych. Here are my choices: HL: Eng Lit. Art Psych or History SL: Biology Math Studies (hahaha) French B I'm still unsure about what I'm going to take for university: Art or Psychology or International Relations/Human Rights

I'm at SL and my option is Abnormal psychology. I realized by seeing other past papers that exam questions tend to ix 2 objectives or take a part of one. Everything is related. My exam is tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. I have started studying by looking at the etiologies and treatments of an afective disorder and an anxiety disorder by just reading because I don't have time to make notes (it's already 9:25 p.m. I find this option veeeeryyy large and with everyting related it's kind of confusing. I am planning to use Sperry as the study to answer "Explain one study related to localisation of function in the brain", but the danger is that I might be talking about lateralisation instead localisation? Since to reap 8 marks for these SAQ, you have to answer the answer very directly and in an explicit manner, how should I answer this SAQ with Sperry? Or what should be the focus? p.s. I believe I have to focus on talking about the corpus callosum? But I'm rather confused. Help please! Cheers, Thorn.

Hi there, For the syllabus outcome: "Discuss how and why particular research methods are used at the sociocultural level of analysis (for example, participant/naturalistic observation, interviews, case studies)." The two methods I was going to look at were: experiments and observations with Asch (1951) as the lab experiment and Bandura, Ross and Ross (the bobo doll 1961) for the observation. However, I'm a bit confused as Bandura is also conducted within a lab, so would this fall under experiment or observation? Are these appropriate methods to discuss? Would a different study like Tajfel 1971 or Sherif be more relevant? Thank you!

I have problem with writing SAQs and last time I wrote it it has been literally a disaster. Could somebody give me some instructions how to write it (I already read this SAQ and LAQ subject, but still have no idea)? The subject is most likely something like outline principles that define BLOA or outline one and explain how that principle was demonstrated in research (if it matters). I would be more than grateful, thanks.

Hey! I need help in starting my psychology EE. My broader topic is "The prisoner abuse of Abi Ghraib explained through social psychology". I'm going to go through different social theories dealing with group behaviour (groupthink, grouptyranny etc.) and I'm going to use different experiments such as Zimbardo's Stanford prison experiment and perhaps the Milgram experiment. I'm also going to study Kurt Lewin's theories on group dynamics. Other psychologists whose theories and studies I'm going to use are Susan Fiske, Lasana Harris and Amy Cuddy. Hello.. I am doing my EE in psychology, and the first draft is due in 20 days. I enjoy psychology, and I am quite good at writing scientific essays, but I am lost as far as EE is considered. I have narrowed topic choices down to this 1) Sociocultural factors in altruistic behaviour 2) Sociocultural origins of violence I can't seem to easily narrow it down further from this. Both these topics seem to have a lot of material, as I have found several different books on this matter. I need advice on whether I should narrow it down further (probably) and how do I do so... Hello! I am very behind in my Extended Essay because, excluding the fact that I have been slacking off, I am very confused with how I am going to approach this. Another problem to add on to this is that my school does not teach IB Psychology so I'm not exactly sure if my topic is even in the Psychology field, which is not a very good sign. Hey! While studying for my psychology test I noticed that in the psychology book we use (Psychology Course Companion- http://hintaseuranta.fi/API/image/292391/jpg800x465) for each of the core topics there are extra sections titled "An integrative look at (e.g. criminal behavior/happiness/prejudice and discrimination)". The sections basically analyze a specific behavior through a biological, socio-cultural and cognitive perspective. There are, however, no learning outcomes directly related to these subsections... So I'm confused Do I have to know them and learn the studies? Can they ask something about these in the finals? Or are they just like extra?
