Am I on the right track?

There is a science club in our school which I have recently joined! During the first term, all their meeting coincided with my meetings for the annual school fair hence I din't get a chance to be in it. All in all, I have spoken to my CAS supervisors and its quite hard to do something within the boundaries of school to have lots of science related activities, however I think with my summer courses and workshops as well as my EE which I basing on drugs and medicine (as close to bio I can get with it) and like you said college essays I should be fine. I intend to apply to UCLA, Imperial, UCL - to name a few. I am still trying to make a list because biochemistry is very specific and with the whole "you don't need to declare your major till year 2" its quite hard to figure out if they have the course. For example MIT, not the best for biology but I think they do have biochemistry but you need to do BSc Biology and then you do courses on biochemistry. Idk if I am making sense since I am very confused. UK universities were easier to comprehend as they had my courses. But of course, Thanks for your suggestions

    University choices

Hi Everyone, I am currently in IB year 1 and in about 2 months I will be having interviews with my careers counsellors about my university choices. I have decided on pursuing an BSc in Biochemistry however I am a bit confused when I am doing my research. The top universities which I am inclined towards are Imperial College of London, UCLA, United College of London. However, I had heard some people in my school talk highly about the biochemistry course at MIT. Do any of you know a bit more about it since I can't exactly find a lot of information on their website. They have an undergrad course in biology but because of the whole 1st year is undeclared major I am not sure if they actually offer the discipline of my interest. Also if you know any more universities that has a good program please do recommend. Many thanks for your help!

    Struggling with IB SL Chem

Hey! Even my teacher does a terrible job at explaining because literally everyone at the end of the class questions if anyone understood anything or not. As the 2nd reply says, use that youtube channel. 2 of my friends take SL chem and they have a very bad teacher as well. Use a course companion and make notes. Trust me more often than not, the book contains a lot of things which is just stories and not concept. In our school we use the oxford chemistry companion. And what I do is I use various books a compile a set of notes for each chapter as we go and make it coherent enough to only refer to it and not the book. Do lots of past paper questions, because honestly the science IB papers are one of the ones where the book and the paper has some correlation unlike the maths HL paper where even the smartest kid in the class just smacks his head on the table! But do those exam questions, there are question banks available on websites and often just searching the topic on google links you to make tests which other schools have compiled. I have gotten so much help from doing the papers because if you have done IGCSE's, you would know how much of these exams are based on exam techniques and using the correct terminology..

    HL chem or HL bio?

Honestly I take Chem at HL and Bio at SL and from what my teacher says every lesson Bio SL is easier than Bio HL especially since we are the first year with the new syllabus. Chem HL is literally like my GCSE teacher said a new solar system because it defies almost everything you learnt in GCSE (okay a bit exaggeration but it does!). Just like the other people said above, it's very subjective. One of my friends have taken both at HL and she is often like what did i just learn in class!? Anyways not to scare but it really narrows down to what kind of a learner you are at this point. I had an amazing chem teacher for GCSE but for IB the teacher I have isn't able to interest me in the course so I really find it difficult in concentrating in class which is seriously a terrible thing to do in IB!! just to narrow it down perhaps take bio if and only if, you have a good memory. Bio is all about memorisation and remembering the terminology take chem is and only if, you have a strong foundation for maths and are someone who is good at understanding and implementing. Because chem topics are interlinked. Meanwhile bio topics are more often than not good to be one off. Also IB choices really depend on your career pathway. So any medicine related career would require both at HL or at least chemistry at HL. I took a varied choice to keep my options open however I knew that science would be the path I would be merging into. Just dig around google a bit and I hope you get a good idea on your choices!

Am I on the right track?

I thought you said you were struggling with a 2 or 3 in math hl, unless you moved to math SL or it was a complete lie? Hi Thanks for your concern! I had lots of good suggestions from people which I acted upon. I have been using a wide range of resources and with my teachers help I scored just a 6 in my calculus test last week

Am I on the right track?

Honestly I don't! Like I mean I have just this weird notion that I want to be remember for a long time in my school and leave a mark. And also I am one of those perfection craving human. Literally I wonder how people deal with me, because I think I have almost in all occasions reiterated that nothing is good for me. But thanks a lot everyone! It makes me feel really good especially since I spend a better part of the day considering why some people who are right now "assumed" to be the next head prefects more in the talks than I am haha

Am I on the right track?

What would you recommend I do to add an action event into my portfolio considering that I am not particularly skilled in that field?

Am I on the right track?

Thanks guys! HAHA sports and me don't fit in the same box. I am seriously pathetic in those so I am trying to really get my action hours through PE modules like zumba, aerial arts. I have 16 hours in total now. And I dance which counts as action HHAHA. For IB, I am getting 7/6 for all my subjects and I am prepping for SAT's now. I am doing the test in May.

Am I on the right track?

Hey Everyone! Firstly, thanks for taking your time out and offering help. I am one of those people who are never good enough. Its like YAY I got 90% thats a 7, while everyone congratulates me I just fight with myself in the head saying that I could have very easily gotten 100%. So good is never good for me. Just recently I got accepted in to the Senior Prefect Team for my school but now I am just worrying and striving for the head team. I am planning on majoring in biological sciences or biochemistry. I am checking out some universities here over the next week to finalise on one. Like everyone my aim is to get into an elite college, but I am worried that my character profile is not good enough to stand out amongst the crowd. I would love for all of you to give some valuable suggestions on my profile so far: - Head of PR and Advertising for Night Fest (an annual school fair) - Student Librarian - Tutoring GCSE students in sciences - Tutoring young kids from troubled backgrounds - Member of the Student Council since 2013 - Making a Difference council since 2013 and next chair - Member of the Senior Prefect Team 2015-2016 - Performed in various school and community functions for 5 years and counting - Writing articles for the school newspaper - Member of the House Leadership Team 2014-2015 - Head of Inter House Food Drive 2015 - Head of A student led Charity Ball Taking place in 2016 - Trained in Indian Classical dancing for 5 years - Have had some training in aerial arts and zumba - Member of the show choir who perform in old age homes and to raise funds for charities - Have had 2 years of training in playing the piano HKU, HKUST and CUHK - 3 great universities in HK have summer programmes. I am waiting for the application procedures to begin to enrol. I have already enrolled in the Junior Science Institute programme which is one day workshop in HKU taking place in March. THANKS A LOTTT!!!

    Struggle

First thank you so much for your advice! Currently our school uses the Oxford mathematics books and we are currently on Unit 6 (Stats and Probability) and we, collectively as a class have labelled the book as the worst IB Companion ever - the questions are nowhere close to even the Level 3 questions in the IB paper. Its surprising that our school has provided us with that honestly. I have 2 other books on my mac. I am putting the details here. Have you heard of them before? 1. International Baccalaureate Higher Level Mathematics (Core) by Nigel Buckel and Iain Dunbar 2. Mathematics Higher Level for the IB Diploma by Bill Roberts and Sandy Mackenzie And. Thank You once again - I have recently done a test and got my result back and it was a whole grade higher than my last test. I am trying to get my broken confidence back and going to aim for a solid 5 for my next test in february. In terms of my college major, if I choose Computer Science (BEng), I intend to only search a job after finishing my Masters because I think it makes my job position more secure and higher pay. I don't have much experience with the coding languages and things but I am pretty quick with the utility and learning things. I see myself more inclined towards Networks and Securities and working on softwares used by banks and business to protect their information from leaking and stuff. I think it is very superficial to say "work to produce softwares for the secret agencies" haha. But yeah that is where my interest lies in the long run. Meanwhile for Biochemistry, I am more inclined towards either biotechnology or Pharmacology - the thing is I don't want to work hard getting a bachelors and a masters and then working as an assistant in just a simple lab sorting chemicals. I know we all start low, but with all the education and money, I would like to start higher. I have really not found a lot of higher level job prospects in this field which is worrying me right now. I think the websites are very misleading when they mention "lab work". If you have any more information in either fields of my interest, please do advice. Thanks a lot!!

    Struggle

Hi, I am currently in term 2 of IB year 1. I am doing pretty well in all my subjects scoring 6's and 7's. However there is HL Maths which I am struggling in A LOT. My school had early entry GCSE's offers, so I had finished my maths GCSE's last year in January - 6 months earlier than the usual lot. I scored a 95% and got an A*. Before finalising my IB choices, I went on a college major hunt and juggled between 1. Computer Science and 2.Biochemistry. I am interested in going into medical field but with a technological approach. Hence I am still not sure which would be the ideal major especially in terms of the job market. To make sure that I have my options open, I decided to challenge myself and take HL Maths. After having a conversation with my math teacher at that point - who did not question my decision and gave me a recommendation, I chose HL Maths. However, now I am really struggling with it being my worst now with a score of 2's and 3's. I am perhaps not working immensely hard because there is so much to focus on, however I attempted past paper questions yet I am not getting the results I am wanting. Switching subjects isn't an option for me, because I really want to prove myself and do well in this challenge - securing at least a 5/6. It might seem like a very unSMART target however I really want to do it. I am just not sure where exactly to start from. The books I have teach me the "skill" however when it comes to application, I struggle. Does anyone have any guidance for me on how I can do better? I really want to do this subject and succeed in it. I am a perfectionist and everyone in my class are doing fairly well now with 5's and 6's and it is a major breakdown for me, to see my self fail so pathetically. Thanks a lot for your time and help!!
