  1. Is it ok if we go beyond three minutes? I thought I wouldnt be able to make it long enough at first, but then i timed myself and went way beyond expectations. I think I'll have to cut stuff down now. The oral's tmrw, on the same day as the written exam :| Here goes. How are we supposed to study for French anyway? There's really not much you can do except maybe go through vocabulary.
  2. If there's a fewer number of students in a class, all of them will go for moderation? There's only six kids in French B SL in my school. Does that mean all of our Orals will go for moderation? As in the recording? My oral is this Thurs :| and I'm doing the controversy regarding the French ban on religious symbols in schools in 2003. (Quite a mouthful) does it need to be narrowed down, by the way?

Where did you read this? Could you give me a link or something, if possible? I pretty much stumbled upon the idea while I was rereading Giver, and decided to do it for my EE. I really dont want to change it. :(

Maybe...my supervisor said I could club love/sexual instinct together, but I think there's a lot for sexual instinct and not exactly love...I'm not sure. Thanks
  5. Thanks, I didnt have the rubric actually. I did my IOP kinda informally, (I used the whiteboard a lot.) My teacher said it was fine though, so no problem. Thanks for your help :)

Hedron123: A comparison between two books written in English is not allowed in A1: This means that you can do compare a book written originally in English and a book translated from any OTHER language than English. Not English vs. English. Category 1 The essay must be based on the literature of countries where the language is spoken (that is, all works discussed will originally have been written in the language of the essay). Essays that attempt to interpret literary works as reflections of the writer’s life are rarely successful, tending to produce reductive readings based on second-hand information. Biographical topics should thus usually be avoided. Example question: “How is the subject of death treated in selected poems by Emily Brontë and Emily ****inson?” Category 2 The essay must be a comparison of at least one literary work originally written in the language of the essay with a literary work or works originally written in a different language to that of the essay and probably studied in translation. Example question: “In what ways do the male authors of Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary seek to render their heroines sympathetic to the reader? How far do they succeed?” So you should be able to write an EE on two texts that were both written in English originally. OK, so I'm thoroughly confused now; can I do my EE in English vs English or not? I'm class of 2010. My I'm comparing 1984 and The Giver (might change to 1984 and Animal Farm, both by George Orwell) This is highly shocking Can someone please clarify this?
  7. I'm doing my EE in English, and my topic is a little hazy and rough right now...I'm comparing the dystopia of 1984 (George Orwell) with the utopia of The Giver (Lois Lowry, 1990s). As of now. My EE Supervisor isn't that pleased with my topic though, she thinks that The Giver is too simplistic as a novel. Is my topic too broad? I'd be covering the similarities and dissimilarities, such as 'Repression of language in order to curb thought', and 'repression of sexual instinct, love, and family circles' and 'governance of an omniscient body' as well as the obvious features of the societies. I'd just like your thoughts on this.
  8. I was so tickled when I saw this topic heading. This is exactly how it is in my school. We have IB and the regular central board of education CBSE... and I dont know about anyone else, but we do 'look down' on the others a little, and we are elitist, but thats because there's about 100 kids in CBSE and only 30 in IB. I'm not mean about it, but I tease my CBSE friends sometimes. We cant help thinking that when IB is better I think we do it though because our curriculum is so much harder. I mean, they justhave to get 95% in Math, Physics, and Chemistry, or whatever, and that's it-done. Into college. Whereas we have all the extra stuff like portfolios and TOK essays nad CAS and E.E.s and IAs and IOCs and IOPs and all that...speaking of which, my IOP is in a few hours
  9. Yeah..but I dont think its going to work out that nicely. My teacher said it'll be 3 min presentation, 3 min asking questions about the topic, 3 min random torture.= around 10 min Oral. That's a brilliant idea though I'm going to try that.
  10. Physics HL and Math SL is a no-go, for almost anyone. Its hard to cope with HL Phy when you're taking Studies or SL in Math. Studies is statistics and accounts type stuff, and SL is basic Math like how you might have done in America..(geometry, algebra, trig, limits, etc) HL is a harder and more in-depth version of that. At my school they offer you the option of dropping Math and taking Computer Science instead. Would you be doing that? Of course if you take CompSci, then you DEF cant take Phy HL And IB is hard if you dont like work As I am finding out now :| Physics HL and Math SL is a no-go, for almost anyone.   11. Yes! They sound so french 24/30 sounds amazing to me :| I speak french with a strong American accent (ouch) and I'm dreading my oral. I'm around the highest in class (okay, out of like 6 kids - its a small class) but I would consider myself lucky to get above 20. Oral is going to pull down my entire grade. Any tips for how to kill the oral? I'm dreading Part III (the 'rapidfire' thing where they ask us questions on ANY french topic) because I really dont know how I could prepare for that...other than reading up vocab and txtbook..but that doesnt seem like much help.
  12. When you say 'read', I'm assuming french novels. Which ones did you read, and how did you manage them? I'm French B SL too, but I dont think I could handle a full-on 'roman'

  14. The IBID book by Paul Hoang is the best. Its official IBID, so you cant really go wrong there.
