Question regarding the blue cover sheet

Considering we had Biology Paper 1 and 2 this morning, this response really concerns me, haha. You're definitely not supposed to do all questions, at least not in biology. For HL Bio, you need to pick 2 out of 3 questions in Section B. Anyway, if it's understandable and clear, I'm sure everything will be fine Besides, no point in worrying about it now! Best of luck on your exams, everyone!! Xx

    Would you rather...?

Conversations with people (because I could totally just talk about the subject at hand with different people and have those conversations memorized Would you rather have the ability to go back in time or go into the future?

    Biology IA Yeast Help

Two points on this: 1) You're using two independent variables -- keep this in mind for when you're statistically analyzing your results because it WILL cause a huge pain in the derriere when you get to that point. I know because I ended up using two ind. variables for my EE and it took me about 3 days of research to find out how I can reject my null hypothesis using two variables. I'd suggest you limit it to either changing yeast concentration OR temperature. 2) Why shouldn't you add sugar? Yeast needs sugar for fermentation to occur (glucose is the most effective, and if you want to increase fermentation, add a bit of vinegar or any other substance that will lower the pH so that it's more efficient). If you do decide on adding sugar, you're going to have to consider the amount of sugar added. You can't keep this constant because, obviously, the lowest amount of yeast will ferment the quickest because there'll be a higher sugar concentration. I'd suggest finding a way to make sure the yeast:sugar ratio is the same in each (this is only valid if you decide on making your independent variable yeast concentration; otherwise, this bit's irrelevant) TL;DR I'd suggest making temperature your only independent variable so you can keep yeast concentration and glucose constant without complicating things Best of luck! Xx

Is my EE topic narrow enough?

Hey, I wasn't quite sure what you meant by it would only work if I said the cold war started after 1945, considering it started in 1945? My question would have been along the lines of "to what extent were the Soviet policies of the 1940's a direct cause for the outbreak of the Cold War between 1945 and 1955? There are a number of different approaches and arguments that discuss when the Cold War started. While the generally accepted view is that it began in 1945 at the end of WWII, many historians argue that it began in 1917 during the Bolshevik Revolution when the USA took the Whites side. Also - your question implies that the outbreak of the Cold War was continuous throughout 10 years. I don't know whether or not you meant to do that but you must address that during the writing of your essay. Hey, sorry to bug you yet again. So now I'm wondering if it would be best to avoid all this conflict and just say "how if fuelled the Cold War?" My other option would be to forget this whole topic, but I'm actually quite interested in it. Yes! I think that targeting the advancement of the Cold War rather than the development of it would lead to a much stronger essay!

    English WT2

I think that they do not read after the word limit has been met and also deduct marks (beyond the marks you would've lost by the text that has been unread).

I think attributing the Soviet policies of '45 - '55 as any "causes of the Cold War" is irrelevant unless one of your arguments is going to be saying the Cold War started after 1945 (which would be a pretty new one..). So ideally, you'll just be looking at these policies by ways of fuelling the Cold War. But how would you phrase your research question? That's the determining factor in whether or not your topic is specific enough for 4000 words.

    Group 4 - Biology - Honey

OH! Update on this. I think I was reading a thread about Bio EE and thought this was referring to EEs. Therefore, I retract any claims EE-wise, such as saying you have enough time. Sorry and thank you! x This is true. But it's ALWAYS safer to go with an experiment because it makes up a huge mark of your EE. It is very difficult to get in the top band without an experiment; a practical facilitates this. Nevertheless, it is possible to do a Group 4 EE without an experiment (definitely not recommended, though). You would have time to carry out an EE on fermentation in general (I did!), but honey does not ferment yeast... or anything, really, so that's something you should look out for. With honey, microbiology is usually the best. Since you can't do that, I'd suggest keeping a more general sense of what you want to do in Biology - maybe looking at something involving plants Exactly!! Also, I can't believe you've gotten a 45! That's amazing so congratulations xx The group 4 project no longer counts at all marks-wise. I'm done with my science IA's and all we had to do was fill out a reflection of 50 words on what we did. We just have to have proof of having done the project- other than that it does not matter. The IB won't be looking much at what experiments you did, etc. Also, I second what Siddhakshi says. My Group 4 Project was rushed and pretty low quality, but it shouldn't affect your overall IB score. It is just to encourage collaboration of the sciences and different students.
  11. Were those school based trips or some organisation? Could you guys tell me more about who hosts the trips and how i can take part in it if it happens again The school usually organizes trips like those with an organization outside of school. Here are some links that you might find useful if your school doesn't offer these programmes but you're still interested! http://www.goeco.org/tags/teenage-volunteering http://www.travelforteens.com/trip-category/trip-type/community-service-type/

Study group for Biology HL Students!

There's actually a HUGE Skype group with a bunch of us IB students on there. It's really general and not just about studying. So, while safety issues do exist (I don't imagine how WhatsApp would be safer than Skype considering the fact that you actually get someone's number - and therefore personal details - off of WhatsApp), we have had a successful group. Despite the difficulty of time zones, chatter and study help do exist. Anyway, I take Biology HL and I'm interested in taking part of anything you decide to do
