  1. Hey there, I used an illustration from a popular children's book for my Comparative study, which is apparently allowed. This illustration was originally done on canvas with acrylics so it counted as an artwork. So illustrations from children's novels are okay, and bonus if they're concepts for an actual animation too. However, when I tried to do this same thing with an animation my teacher didn't allow it. She said that using an animation (that isn't short, and purposeful eg. like William Kentridge's animations) that is narrative based isn't appropriate, and is like "shooting yourself in the foot" in the formal qualities section. It would be very hard. My advice, (take it with a grain of salt) is to either use concept art, illustrations or a series of storyboards from a particular artist (animator) instead. In particular, stay away from feature length films if you do end up analysing a 4D piece, short films would be best. Your process portfolio would be wayyy better for narrative type animations, in fact I used one in my own. Stick to basic 2D, 3D works for the comparative study. At most you if find some artist who animates, you can still make connections in the comparison section of the task between their work and your own. Anyway, hopefully thats helpful. If your teacher advises for it then go ahead, and good luck!!!
  2. The Comparative study, unlike most IB subject assessments doesn't have many specific rules with how you go about achieving the Criteria. So, really its open to how you want to do it. However, I'm guessing for the markers a decent quality photo of the artwork(s) will add to your communication of ideas etc. When you say 1500 pixels, is it per inch, cm or mm in quality? Or its the dimensions of the photo? I might be able to help a bit more if you elaborate on that
  3. Your art teacher needs to validate that the work is yours. I'm not sure what the rules are for every school, however at my school the art teacher needs to see you create each piece (Can't make an entire work at home) and see your ideas develop. If the IB cross check it with their own database and the obvious internet option and find evidence for plagiarism then teachers validation is questioned
  4. My opinion will be unpopular, but we've just finished up 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald- oh my gosh I've never actually hated a book like this before. I was super lucky and got a part of it for my IOC too

All true, I just hope the markers are told if it is an appropriation when giving marks with the current guidelines Appropriation is a good way to get marks for conceptual features of an exhibition. I'm personally not okay with marks being given for skill in tracing, unless it is justified with other evidence that the user has a basic ability of drawing. But what the heck, my opinion doesn't matter to the IB markers. I'm basing this whole thread off what I witnessed at my school with one individual last year.
  6. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear, I was referring to drawing skill in my original post. Tracing is a form of art when reference is properly given or when it changes the meaning, but in the instance of the situation stated it was used demonstrate a skill that the individual didn't have. I was questioning this deception, not the art itself.
  7. Thanks so much for the response, I think the fact they changed the curriculum shows that they probably wanted to test Visual Arts in more ways than just the practical. I don't think there was references for the work I was talking about, but this was last year with the previous rules and curriculum. I got a little bit hung up on that. You definitely have a point, thanks for clarifying everything. My VA teacher wasn't really clear with that. Best of luck with Visual Arts this year, and yeah its all new so I think that works in both of our favours
  8. I've been trying to improve both- a lot of people at my school don't take it seriously when I tell them that I dedicate most of my time with these two subjects... hopefully they don't drag my final results down. You're right though, thanks so much for that

  10. Hi everyone, My school had someone last year who got a 7 in Visual Arts HL, and you know; good for them! I saw their work, and they submitted these amazing realistic works that I honestly was in awe in seeing for the first time. Yet, it was admitted by my Visual Arts teacher just this year that the technical skill she exhibited wasn't true to her ability, she traced over photographs of some people. Now, I know for some people drawing is something that is much harder than sculpture, photography etc... For me though, it is literally what I've spend a lifetime working towards, drawing and doing it realistically (love cartoons though!). I felt at little cheated by this, I've dedicated so much time in this skill; and then knowing that this component of VA isn't properly checked (because some moderators can't tell between tracing and skill and this and allowed in some schools, including mine) I just- I can't plagiarize in IB, I can't go into a Maths Exam with notes, so why is deception this allowed? I just can't get my head around this, I hope I didn't offend anyone with my post!! In regards to the practical work submitted for your exhibition in Visual Arts, what are the rules? I feel like IB will let a lot of things slide with the arts, opinions anyone on this?? Or maybe a justification that will put me at peace with the current situation, that would be much appreciated hahaha
  11. English, Language and Literature HL is my easiest subject. I prefer the concepts and I love reading so yeah. I honestly love all my HL subjects Hardest subject(s) is Maths Studies and Spanish Ab initio. I know they're pretty pathetic but I honestly do struggle with them... explains the levels of course
  12. This is a question which depends on the situation and the individuals involved. Right? I honestly think there are cultural aspects to "respect your elders" as well, so its different for everyone. I personally will always respect those who are significantly older than me. However I'll have to agree with you with earning respect in the instance that there is someone who isn't significantly older than me, I'm not going to be respectful to someone in their 20s if they're really rude. You could take the moral high-ground with this whole thing and respect everyone, but if you tolerate everyone's worst then everyone will come to know you as someone who can do this. I personally couldn't, haha I'm too short fused with some people.
  13. The only 'socialising' I've had to do apart of the course is designing a practice IA. The majority of the time you're just trying to get all the content down because it is kinda a lot to remember. For me its pretty much like any other science/humanities classroom. I know that there a elements of the course that focuses on the sociocultural level of analysis which might require first hand experience (teacher might ask for this). I've spoken to ex-IB students and they told me it depends on the teacher. Sorry if this isn't helpful... Good luck!
