  1. Comparative essays are always easier, at least that's what I've been lead to believe. It's sort of a recipe for success for EEs in english. I can't tell you what to pair it with though. Also, you might not want to tie yourself down with Lolita. My advice is to look at the books you've read and make connections between them, or look at summaries of books you might read and make connections. My thesis for my EE arose out of a lot of thought and research into many different avenues with different book pairings. Once you think you've got a good thesis, you can read/reread the books and let the parts you want to use form around it.

    Poetry EE

    Hey guys, I'm doing my EE in English on T.S. Eliot's poetry. Specifically, my title is "How is social anxiety portrayed in various poems from T.S. Eliot's Prufrock and Other Observations" I'd like some feedback on this title in general, and I would also love to talk to anyone who has done an English EE with poetry before. I'm concerned about keeping a literary focus, and if I'll have enough to say... would I do better comparing different poets rather than several poems from the same poet?? Any feedback is much appreciated!
  4. I think it's great! Our English teacher stresses that the IB likes when people do comparative studies, so I think you're safe doing two books under one theme. I haven't read either of these books, but the question looks good. Try to arrive at a similar conclusion about the American Dream for both books. The only danger here would be that you could start reading the books and dislike them, or realize they're not saying what you want them to about your topic! I'd recommend reading them quickly and deciding if you still want to pursue the question.

  6. Perhaps change the question to "what is the relationship between time spent gaming and school grades?", to make it more impartial. I think this will work well because both your variables are quantitative, so it'll be easy to do a chi-squared or w/e in order to do the "complex maths" the criteria requires. Sounds like a good project to me! Just make sure you collect a big enough sample of data accurately.
  7. I mean, HL maths is pretty serious. From what I understand, it's taken by people who want to be mathematicians, engineers, accountants etc... To go in to a medical field, I wouldn't think HL is required, but you should check that to be sure! Imo, maths SL was quite a bit of work (I took it at the beginning of the year and was in extended maths at my old school), and maths HL was really only for people who planned to pursue a directly math-related field. Two people are doing it in my year (of about 30 people total). SL maths is sufficient for most things, and I'd say that if you don't actively enjoy maths, HL wouldn't be a good option. I'm probably really biased because I like English more than maths, but from your post it seems like you feel this way too - if English comes more easily to you than maths (and you like it more) then take it as a higher level subject, would be my advice.
  8. It's easier to choose a CAS idea, I think, if you narrow it down to a few categories. Are you concerned with the community, social and helpful? Maybe you'd like to work with the elderly or with primary school children, or children with special needs. Are you creative? Maybe you'd like to volunteer with a local arts group, or paint a mural, or cover over graffiti? Are you environmentally conscious? You could look in to local environmental problems and try to solve one, or do a trash clean up. Some examples of CAS projects done this year: My group did one with bluebirds since they're endangered in Bermuda and rely on man-made bluebird boxes to nest. We raised money to buy bluebird boxes, constructed them, painted them, and put them up around a golf course. Another group organized a clean up with KBB and did a trash survey. Another group hunted invasive lionfish on island and helped start a social media campaign raising awareness about their threat to the environment. You can do pretty much anything as long as you're helping someone and not getting paid!
  9. I think this is totally doable! If you persevere, and you think you're up for it, it's completely within the realm of possibility to succeed with 7 subjects, 4 of which are highers. Some people might say that it may not be worth it, in the end, though. Most universities don't mind much which classes you take, as long as you qualify for their programs. It mostly comes down to a numbers game, and taking the standard number of subjects and highers will allow you to do the minimum amount of work and wrack up the most points. That being said, it's way more important to do what you love in high school than just do the bare minimum and scrape by in to university. If you love all these classes, then take them! I take 6 classes, 4 highers; the ones which apply to you are English (HL), Art (HL), Biology (HL), Spanish ab and Math studies, so I can tell you about the severity of those courses. Overall, like the poster above me said, IB isn't really as difficult as most people make it out to be (or, that's how I feel in March of my first year...).
  10. Hello! I'm in IB1, and I'm pretty unhappy with the school that I'm at now. I want to switch schools, and ideally go abroad. However, I want to know your opinions on if it's even allowed to switch schools half way through the IB program, and if you think it's a feasible idea? Have any of you done it, and if so how did it go? Also, generally, are any of you doing IB at a boarding school away from home, and how is it?
  11. How did you like Never Let me Go? Didn't use it for my IOP but I did read it earlier in the year... I really enjoyed it. In an interview with NPR Ishiguro says, "The fact is, yes we will all fade away and die, but people can find the energy to create little pockets of happiness while we’re here" in reference to NLMG. Don't really know if this is significant to you, but I thought it was so profound and apparent that his purpose for creating the novel was not to comment on cloning and biotechnology, but to comment on what humanity really entails. Yeah! I loved Never Let Me Go. My brother did IB before me, and he must have read it in English as well. I read it after he brought it home, so I actually read it twice. It's one of my favourite books, honestly. It's weird cause lots of people in my class didn't even finish it, and said they didn't like the writing style. That's a great quote! I think the fact that it's more of a comment on human nature, not on science and ethics, makes it a more powerful read.
  12. I talked about how Kathy H in Never Let Me Go and Jean Dominique Bauby in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly both rely on survival through memory to get through their lives. I rather enjoyed doing the presentation, and tbh I was surprised I used TDBATB in the end because I didn't like reading it much at all Went a bit overtime though...
  13. Hello, everyone! I think that for the most part, the IB program is great and it's beneficial to have to take six subjects; one from each group. However, something that bothers me is that taking a subject from the arts is not required. It seems like the ultimate gesture, even by the IB, that the arts are worth less than other subjects. Maybe to an extent you can't study for them in the same way as other subjects, but I think they should be valued the same as other subjects. How can the IB call themselves fully rounded if an art isn't required? What do you guys think of this? Do you think it's right that an art isn't required? How do you think people would take it if an art was required to complete the IB program?
  14. I mean, the IOP is a really general thing - it's not essential to have a super focused topic at all. It's a pretty chill presentation. But if you think you've got 10 minutes of material from Queen Mab, then I'd say go for it! The most important thing is to pick a topic that you are interested in. Also, for this in particular, you could totally bring the Romeo + Juliet (1996) movie in to it, if you've seen it, since Mercutio was so cool in that!
