  1. Fair comment. But, "Do you think that a higher ranking actually denotes a significantly better educational environment?" Absolutely not. I am by no means saying that you (or anyone for that matter) should choose a university solely on the basis of rankings. But you have to admit that for some people they are taken into consideration. And given that there are so many different rankings out there, I thought I would just find a reasonable average as I was quite curious myself and I thought it may be helpful for some others. You can ignore what's above and have your own way, but I don't think its unreasonable to have another way of looking at things.
  2. Hello everyone! As I am a student who has been researching universities over the last year or so, my curiosity in the various rankings of them has gotten the better of me. Therefore, I decided to find every university ranking I could and averaged them all out by weighting certain rankings more than others. I normally adjusted the ranking weights on what I thought were the most influential, but also, the most detailed, unique and multi-dimensional in their methodology. The main reason I compiled this ranking was to look at how various universities fared against each other against numerous criteria, both subjective and objective, and size independent and size dependent. I did not use any subject-specific rankings because the main rankings often take them all into account and form an average anyways. Here are the weights:QS World ranking: x8 https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2018Times world ranking: x8 https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2018/world-ranking#!/page/0/length/25/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/statsUS News world ranking: x8 http://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/rankingsARWU: x8 http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2017.htmlCWUR: x6 http://cwur.org/2017.php Times Reputation ranking: x4 https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2017/reputation-ranking#!/page/0/length/25/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/stats Richest universities by endowment x2 (Total Endowment ranking is x1 and Endowment per student ranking is another x1 (The rank for endowment per student has to be added a bit because of the presence of liberal arts colleges in the US, which do not necessarily have a large overall endowment but they do have large endowments per student)): http://www.thebestschools.org/features/richest-universities-endowments-generosity-research/ http://www.nacubo.org/Documents/EndowmentFiles/2016-Endowment-Market-Values.pdf http://higheredstrategy.com/university-endowments-in-a-global-context/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_universities_in_the_United_States_by_endowment https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_universities_by_endowment https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadian_universities_by_endowmentQS Employment ranking: x2 https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/employability-rankings/2018Times Employment ranking: x2 https://www.timeshighereducation.com/student/best-universities/best-universities-graduate-jobs-global-university-employability-rankingRound Ranking: x2 http://roundranking.com/ranking.html Reuters innovation ranking: x2 http://www.reuters.com/article/us-amers-reuters-ranking-innovative-univ/reuters-top-100-the-worlds-most-innovative-universities-2017-idUSKCN1C209R Universities ranked by amount of Nobel Laureates: x2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nobel_laureates_by_university_affiliation Universities ranked by amount of Field medal winners: x1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Fields_Medal_winners_by_university_affiliation Universities ranked by amount of Turing award winners: x1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Turing_Award_laureates_by_university_affiliation Best college reviews Influence: x1 http://www.bestcollegereviews.org/features/the-30-most-influential-colleges-and-universities-of-the-past-century/ Round reputation ranking: x1 http://roundranking.com/ranking/reputation-rankings.html Round academic ranking: x1 http://roundranking.com/ranking/academic-rankings.html Universities with the most Billionaires: x1 https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/top-20-universities-for-producing-billionaires/2017097.article Best Universities to become a millionaire: x1 https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/worlds-top-100-universities-for-producing-millionaires/2008749.article Webometrics: x1 http://www.webometrics.info/en/world Urap: x1 http://www.urapcenter.org/2017/world.php?q=MS0yNTAw Scimago: x1 (If you go to this website, I filtered it to just higher education institutions) http://www.scimagoir.com/rankings.php?sector=Higher educ. 4icu: x1 http://www.4icu.org/top-universities-world/ Influence Wikipedia: x1 http://perso.utinam.cnrs.fr/~lages/datasets/WRWU/theta_PR.php https://www.timeshighereducation.com/features/wikipedia-ranking-world-universities-top-100 Versus.com best universities: x1 https://versus.com/en/university/top thetoptens.com best universities: x1 (You can vote for your favorite on this one) http://www.thetoptens.com/best-universities/ NTU: x1 (I averaged out the ranking seen and the one adjusted for size) http://nturanking.lis.ntu.edu.tw/DataPage/OverallRanking.aspx?pagesize=100&y=2017 Leiden: x1 (I averaged out all 7 variations of research output ranking seen) http://www.leidenranking.com/ranking/2017/list Nature Index: x1 (If you go to this website, I filtered it to just academic institutions) https://www.natureindex.com/annual-tables/2017/institution/academic/all World Brand Lab: x1 http://www.worldbrandlab.com/world/2016/down.htm I then divided whatever number I got by 72 (as that is what all the weights add up to).Admittedly, I may have missed some, especially after the top 40 (and almost certainly a couple after the top 50).And also, I did have to do a couple of estimations as some of the rankings only displayed rankings up to a certain point and some of the below universities did not make it. 3. Hello Everyone! For those of you taking English Lang and Lit SL, how many WT's do we have to do for the portfolio? And what would happen if we did not manage to finish all of them? I am asking this because I know that we only choose one to send away for marking. Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
  4. I was wondering if it is allowed (or possible) to do the IB diploma programme from two different schools. For example, different schools in the first and second year. Any previous experience or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
  5. I have been studying Chinese for a couple of years now, leading me to pick Chinese B SL as my group 2 subject. After a month into this course I am finding it a little challenging. So just for note would it hamper the way universities look at me if I was to drop from B SL to AB initio or will that not matter. And is AB initio really that easy for someone who has been studying the language for a few years? Or is this just an exaggeration. Any previous experience and feedback would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Hi! Thanks for the insightful reply. I understand that most engineering courses require physics and math HL but won't something like bio medical engineering focus more on thing like bio and chem and less on physics and math. Or is this just a misunderstanding I have. The link that you have given me about Cambridge only contains medicine and nothing to do with bio medical engineering so I have not gained too much information about it. This is why I am still confused.
  7. I am taking Math SL right now and I was wondering that if it would be at all necessary to switch to Math HL if I wanted to study something like biomedical engineering or medicine in university. Since I am already a little bit into the curriculum I would like to stick with SL but I just want to see since many majors require Math HL. And if it doesn't matter, would I still be considered a weaker candidate than applicants who took HL. I have already taken Bio and Chem at HL. Any help and previous experience would be greatly appreciated.
  8. Thanks so much for the awesome reply. You seem to have cleared a lot of holes up. I know have a much better understanding. THANK YOU! And if you could tell me from your experience, what is the average length of a good FOA?
  9. I am taking English A Language and Literature and our teacher has assigned us a further oral activity to do for part 1 of the course. Our topic assigned is multivocality. Since the teacher did not go into depth about how this activity actually works I am a little bit lost. Any previous experience and help would be greatly appreciated.
  10. I was wondering whether or not it would be necessary to take Math HL and Physics in IB in order to study technology related material in the future. As of know I am taking Math SL and Bio and Chem HL. Although these subjects do interest me I am not so sure how much they will enable me into studying technology in the future. Any feedback would be highly appreciated Thanks!
