  1. First one is too broad. Do the second one. Specify the time period you are talking about.
  2. Yes, getting good grades, for the majority of the people, indicate a high intelligence - at least in my opinion. Yes, a lot of the times being graded is not 100% based on how well you have learned, but what the system wants from you. But it's a bit of a stretch to say it's only because of how well you adhere to the system. For what's worth, wouldn't that itself be a version of intelligence, demonstrative of how resourceful you can be? I mean, if you are naturally good at Chemistry, and you fail the IB Chemistry exam, instead of blaming it on the system, wouldn't it be better to consider whether you have, at all, understood what IB marking schemes look for in the 2 years that you were in IB? It is a tad - excuse me if this offends anyone - unintelligent to make the argument against the system, when you could have just learned what the system wants in the first place. Intelligence is not just IQ. How resourceful you are and how hard working you are all count toward it. I read a while back - can't find it now so accuse me of hearsay if you must - on an interview done with some education experts on the GRE. Some people are complaining that the GRE vocabulary is absolutely worthless and they cannot possibly understand why that would be relevant to someone pursuing a master's degree in an area that does not require the vocabulary at all. SAT vocabulary can be justified toward formal use, but no one ever uses GRE vocabulary and most - if not all - of it are forgotten after the exam. However, the experts point out that the rationale is that because those words are so little-used, it is a challenge in itself to not be bored and have the perseverance and the ability to memorize them in such a short time. If a person is able to score well on the GRE, it is hugely indicative of their hard work and memorization skills.
  3. To be honest, the best choice would be to find which historians your teacher is using for historiography for these units, and read their work. It will also not only give you a good sense of what was happening, but also can get you to add very nice historiography and critical analysis into your essays.
  4. No, not too broad. Look for historiography to counter your argument though...for a "to what extent" essay you have to look at both sides of the argument.
  5. Yes, anyone who works hard can get a 45. No, getting a 45 should not be your goal. It is frankly pointless and places unnecessary stress on you. I know of people who got 45, and they are all very laid back people who work hard but set their expectations to be realistic. When they got 45 it was for them a happy surprise. If your aim, to start with, is a 45, you will be too stressed out to actually achieve your potential.
  6. So far since the beginning of this semester I have done great, with mostly 7s for predicted. I was confident that, if I could a good job on supplementaries, I won't have any trouble getting into my dream schools and programs. However a few weeks ago life has hit me hard on my face. My mother passed away very suddenly and I am essentially in a wreck. I have been forcing myself to study and stuff, even though all my teachers are advising me otherwise, because I really want to make my mother happy by being able to get into my dream schools. Still, it's been hard, and my grades are somewhat slipping from tests in the last 2 weeks. I am wondering about extenuating circumstances. How do universities look upon extenuating circumstances? If I am only now dropping in grades after my mom's death, will they just instead look at my midterm marks before all this happened?

  8. Something where you are focusing on one subject and one subject only, either the internment of Japanese Americans or the treatment of Jews. Make the scope as narrow as possible.

A person who identifies on the left side of the political spectrum would not be automatically assumed democrat, a person who identifies on the right side would not be automatically assumed republican, so why the same categorization has to apply with feminism? Yes, the founding aim of feminism was to ensure equal rights for both sexes, but I think over the decades societal views have changed greatly, so to argue that such still remains the definition of feminism would be counter-intuitive to what modern feminism actually attempts to achieve - not being negative about it, but the goals have shifted from the early days of campaigning for women's suffrage. It's like comparing left and right wing politics now to what they were 100 years ago. There is a big difference and a lot of things are redefined. I think the feminist movement needs to re-evaluate itself and its goals given that this ambiguity in definition has caused a big divide in viewing the movement from feminists themselves.
  10. Your IA has a max word count of 2200 (ish) words. Stuff like the reflection and OPCVL take up a minimum of 700. That leaves the actual essay portion with 1500 words. If you are going to compare, you have about 750 words for either the Japanese Americans and the Jews. 750 words being summary + analysis + intro/conclusion altogether. Do you really think you will have the room to go into much detail for either side of the topic?
  11. I just find it hilarious that whenever the issue gets brought up by supporters of either sides, it instantly gets turned into a "is Islam a peaceful religion" debate instead. Ultimately the problem is not with Islam, but with cultural integration. Muslims have been practicing Islam with no problem in Europe/NA for years as integrated members of society. You can't expect people who have not been exposed to Western culture to be integrated so easily though. There is a false equivalency when looking at Syrian refugees and regular Muslims in our society. Concerned supporters of either side of the problem need to realize this. @heintze, is it true that after accepting refugees and migrants, Sweden's rape rate has gone up for more than 1000%? And that in Sweden it's not legal for people to be classified based on their race/country of origin? I also find sometimes members of the left-wing - where I identify - tend to use political correctness as a way to ignore the actual problem. You are not helping anyone when you overlook the issues that are brought about with accepting migrants, and by calling people who are uncomfortable "racist" and "selfish", you are only adding societal tension to this already controversial problem. Integration is hard. It takes years before new immigrants and refugees alike can become functional members of the Western society. The focus should be on government programs that can help with integration and find ways to compromise among different political views.

I don't really care that much for the election results as the candidates I followed did not make the nomination, but what actually shocked me, who didn't follow the election, was - and is - how hostile people get when other people express different political opinions. This even happened between supporters of different candidates within the same party. People are getting divorced, going no contact with family members over this election. I can't scroll down Facebook without seeing a generic 100-comment long heated debate. Ultimately political beliefs are no different from religious beliefs and other personal preferences. Please learn to respect that. This system has worked for America for 200 years. Don't say that it's failing now.
  13. The topic doesn't matter. No topic is too "broad" or "narrow". The essay question, on the other hand, is what determines the viability of your essay.
  14. To what extent was the rape of Nanking and Anti-Japanise in international press drove colonial Japan to establish comfort stations <-- how are you going to make an argumentative essay on this? To what extent how did rape of Nanking lead Japan to surrender in WW2 <-- how do you avoid guesswork on this? It happened 8 years ago. No historiography on the subject suggests a link. To what extent rape of Nanking affected on Korea <-- ....how? To what extent rape of Nanking had benefits on Japan's army. <-- you are just adding "to what extent" to every single title...for what reason? None of these are doable in anyway if you want a good grade. If you definitely want the rape of Nanking, some possible topics to consider - the Rape of Nanking and its effect on Chinese WW2 propaganda - functionalist vs intentionalist debate on Rape of Nanking - causes of the Rape of Nanking (narrow it down a bit if you wish)
  15. The first question sounds like too much summarization. Just think about what your arguments will be for it. It's not really argumentative in any way. Second one is way more doable.
