  1. so my teacher have disapproved my chemistry IA atleast twice so i need some guidance about my IA ideas related to fertilizers thanks.
  2. I just started SL Chemistry and my teacher has almost no training in chemistry. He hasn’t given us a syllabus and it’s been four weeks into school. I think my school offers ESS with a great pass rate, but I would like to study physics and I think I’ll stick it out...even though almost no one passes the IB Chem exams. i want to start now and get any textbooks or note taking guides you guys might have. My teacher is not helping at all, I am quite in need of help. Thanks, Crumbling-IB-Stduent
  3. Hello, I need help deciding what topics to pursue. The topic I really want to do is how do the different isomers of butanol affect the yield of carboxylic acid in primary alcohol oxidation. I am planning to do some reflux experiments with this. Unfortunately, I thought this topic was well researched but it seems perhaps the mechanism has ok research but not the compound. So I am having research problems, but I can probably generate more theory since I essentially will talk about elements of molecular geometry that affect its oxidation. I have abundant ideas of further research topics for this if I down this route (ex. what if I use phenol or what if its the same formula but different pattern of bonds?). Currently, the research I have may suffice, but I will have to piece the research together (for example I have research talking about butanol as a compound, then combustion data..etc) to develop it to be adequate. The other topic I feel uncomfortable with, but A LOT of research is written about it. It involves seeing the efficiency of hydrogen production when using a strong base or strong acid. If I go down this route, I will be conducting experiments of electrolysis. I have found abundant research for base electrolytes, but it feels kind of answered and I just have a faint idea of how I am going to discuss this in theory. I would love to hear your opinions and thanks too!

    Changing Subjects

Hi. I am just now entering my second year of IB. I am taking chemistry SL & psychology HL (online) and would like to change from both. Throughout last year I unfortunately didn’t take psychology that serious and am finding difficulty in it (my expected grade is probably going to be very low). And for chemistry, its hard and it’s going to require more effort than necessary. So I wanted to change from chemistry to arts (since my school finally has arts this year) and from psychology online to film online. Since I have a strong background in both, is it possible to do them both in the second year?
  5. Hello Ive just started the IBDP program, and I am currently taking physics SL for my experimental science subject. Although I did okay with topic one (was sometimes confused in class though was able to understand with revision) . I am not good at maths, and am aspiring to study psychology in the future. SHOULD I change to chemistry SL instead of physics SL, considering how apparently chemistry has somewhat easier maths than physics? What are the differences among these subjects? If I’m bad at math, should I not take physics SL?
  6. My sl chemistry exam is coming up in a few weeks, and I´m really struggling with studying. I started studying(wrote notes following the syllabus, read the textbook, watched a few videos, did multiple choice questions) a few weeks ago and have already gotten through most of the topics. However, whenever I try a past exam or questions in the textbook´s chapter review, I just can´t seem to do it. I seem to just completely forget whatever new information I learnt the day before, or how I´m supposed to solve certain problems. I´m starting to feel stressed since my exams coming up soon, and wanted to know how others studied for their chem exam. What worked and what didn´t? Any general tips on how to do well on the exam??
  7. For my IA, I'm trying to find the activation energy of a glowstick reaction (phenyl oxalate ester + hydrogen peroxide). Using the Arrhenius equation and the integrated rate laws, and using this link as a guide (https://www.westminster.edu/about/community/sim/pdf/SLIGHTSTICKKINETICS_001.pdf), I was able to come up to a certain point. I have two questions. In the link, I see that it used first-order kinetics in order to create an equation that relates rate of reaction to temperature (with activation energy/R being the slope). However, as far as I know, first-order kinetics only applies to chemical reactions with one reactant. I then looked at another source, which breaks up the chemiluminescence process into several steps, as shown by this source (http://cartwright.chem.ox.ac.uk/tlab/experiments/X3_kinetics.pdf). Was the formula in the first link regarding the decomposition of the peroxyacid ester? My second question is that in the first document, it creates an equation that shows a linear relationship between rate of reaction and illumination. Would illumination be illuminance which could be measured in lux?
  8. I was reading through some past chemistry IA examples and found a research question that I thought was really interesting and quite unique. I was wondering if it would be okay for me to use the same research question and essentially the same procedure, or would that be plagiarism?
  9. My Chemistry IA topic is focused on determining the calcium in milk by using the edta method (actual research question: How does the concentration of the calcium ion content relate to the temperature of the cow milk by using the EDTA titration method?) and I want to express my interest for my personal engagement. I am already doing research about the Calcium and EDTA things and the importance of Calcium and Milk in diet.
  10. Hi I'm looking to go into the medical field in university but I'm not sure whether I should take HL Math or HL Psych. As of right now, I really want to study neuroscience in uni and I know Psych would help with that but at the same time, HL Math might be really important especially with calculus and all. My current subject choices are: HL Biology, Chemistry, Psych/Math SL English Lang Lit, Chinese B, Psych/Math Please let me know what you think is best and in general what you think of the subject combination. I know it will be extremely challenging and I'm scared but I like the subjects and I really want to head into the medical field. Thank you!
  11. Hey!! I'm starting IB in less than a month and I already chose my subjects because I wanted to major in Psychology. However, I am now leaning towards veterinary science. At first, I chose bio SL. To be a vet, I first need to have a bachelor degree in Biological Science. The uni I plan on going does not require chem. But, if I do major in biological science, there will be some chem classes. I am for sure taking Bio but I am not sure if I should move it to HL and add Chem SL. My question here is how hard is BIO HL compared to BIO SL? (I'm interested in bio) Will chem SL help me in uni (Biological Science major) even though my uni does not require it? should i take it? (I'm really bad at math and I do not really enjoy chem and I found the intro class hard but I did not really pay attention)
  12. The IB results came out today. I'm short of 2 points for getting my diploma and I want to get some opinions if I should get a remark. My requirement codes only requires me to get a 24 and have at least 12 points in all of my HLs combined. These are what I got: (9 points in all of my HLs combined currently, need 3 more) English Literature HL: 54 (a 4 on the 7 pt. scale), needs 4 more marks for a 5 Biology HL: 36 ( a 3 on the 7 pt. scale), needs 2 more marks for a 4 Chemistry HL: 31 ( a 2 on the 7 pt. scale), needs 3 more marks for a 3 I basically just need to get all of these points for all of these subjects to fulfil my requirement code and get the IB Diploma. What are my chances of getting bumped up by a point in each subject? Should I just go for it?
  13. Hello, thanks in advance for your answer. My friend has a very high probability of repeating one year. Under what conditions does a person stay in the second year in ib (11 grade) ? If in the first term (grade 11) the student receives 1,2,2,7,5,6. And in the third term (grade 11 ) he has 7,6,7,3,2,4 + A (TOK) will my friend have repeat a grade ? (Retention one year ) (CAS has done ) My friend is very nervous about this, but I don't know anything about falling conditions in ib. Thank you 😊
  14. My chemistry IA investigates the different activation energy of the decomposition of H202 with Lead oxide and manganese oxide. My teacher told me to plot 1/Temp against Ln x 1/ Average Time taken but not how to actually calculate Ea. How do I get the activation energy if I have the time it takes for the percentage of oxygen to rise by 15% at 5 different temperatures and have it plotted 1/Temp against Ln x 1/ Average Time taken using the Arrhenius equation.
  15. Hello, has anyone there done an IA in chemistry about activation energy and could share some tips or their marks with me? I have a topic of What is the activation energy of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in presence of catalase, by measuring the time taken for 10cm3 of oxygen gas to be evolved at different temperatures? Either at different temp or also without catalase and with MnO2? My justification, in brief, is that H2O2 is present in cells and catalase is needed to break it down so that it isn't harmful and therefore low activation point is important (and I want to see a) what it is b) alternatively how does it compare to reaction without catalase). My teacher says that it's not really a good topic because there's no reason for this experiment and perhaps I should at least compare it with catalysts that include elements that are in human body, but there aren't really such as for example we're better off without Pb in our body. What do you think?
  16. Hi guys, I just wanted to ask if you think these topics are suitable for my Chem HL IA: -Either the pH change of water over a period of time and how it is affected by the temperature -The rate of reaction of glowsticks at different temperatures(Using a light sensor). I would be open to suggestions on titration reactions that I could do. Thanks in advance
  17. I need to start getting solid with my IA topic but right now I am just brainstorming ideas and wanting to hear some ideas from peers. So far I only have around three ideas but are fairly common and perhaps not HL worthy: 1) Calcium content in different types of milk ( not sure how to do this one but interested, wondering if I should use the milk of different animals or different processes and procedures) 2) Enzyme and substrate relationship on how changing the amount of substrate would affect the enzyme activity and perhaps the pH as well? ( Biological catalyst, a bit worried that this is too biology, thinking about using catalase and hydrogen peroxide but afraid that it is too common and also would like to explore different enzymes as well) 3) Best material for cooling pack (quite random really...) I don't really have a lot of confidence in myself and due to previous issues, I have stuff in my chemistry academics to catch up on and find it different to concentrate and understand but I'm willing to learn and work hard. Please do suggest different Chem IA topics as well! I would love to hear them and perhaps find one that I really like.
  18. How many marks are uncertainties worth in the chemistry ia? If I were to not include them at all how many marks would I lose? If I did them incorrectly how many marks would I lose?
  19. Hello everyone, I am currently doing 4 HL's but I need to drop one as soon as possible. Right now I am taking Math, Physics, Chem and Econ HL. I want to be an astrophysicist. I know that I need to keep Physics HL, I do not know about Math because even though I am strong at math, the teachers say that it will be very challenging for me and I will not be able to get the score I want, but if I drop to Math SL she said that the course would be kinda too easy for me not letting me develop my skills. I have to choose between Chem and Econ which one to drop. If I were to have Physics, math, and chem HL the teachers say I would pick the "death combo", and I can see why. But they complement the best If I were to pick Physics, econ, and chem HL, would I need more maths but should I be okay with just Math SL for astrophysics? or should it be better if I keep Math HL? The other option would be to have Physics, math, and econ HL, in which math would be the most challenging one for me. I have tried the 4 for a semester, and I am allowed to keep it like that for another semester before yr12 starts, but me and my math teacher would like if I decide as soon as possible, if possible before the second semester of my first year starts. Thank you all for your help! All thoughts are welcomed!
  20. What is Nature of Science? It seems like the IB is beginning to ask more and more questions on it in the exams. Is there anything that I need to know or understand for it? I know that you can just use some common sense and logic to answer these types of questions, but is there any way to prepare?
  21. Hello! I wanted to compare natural pH indicators (ex, red cabbage and beets) with the standard ones. I was thinking of just doing pH titrations to compare the results of the natural vs standard. Along with that, I was going to produce the pH curves and calculate the pKa value as well as the equivalence points. Is this good enough for an IA? Should I add anything?
  22. Dear associates, I need your help. My Extended Essay subjects & topic are due soon, but I am struggling with the choice. I am determined to study medicine after graduating, and thus I want my EE to be relevant. However, when it comes to related sciences, Biology and Chemistry, teachers in my school strongly advise against them, claiming that students get the lowest grades for these subjects. I am interested in them but not much competent in either Bio or Chem, as I picked them only a month ago (this is another story 😂). Those of you who are experienced in the sciences or anyone willing to help, please give me your advice! Is it true that it is nearly impossible to get a high mark (A or B) in EE in experimental sciences? Do I better choose an interdisciplinary subject? Could you probably share some thoughts about medicine-related topics in EE? I would be genuinely grateful for any reply 😊
  23. Here is my Chemistry EE Topic and Question that I have developed: Topic: "A comparison of NaOH and CaO as alkaline catalysts in the transesterification reaction of Vegetable Oil to Bio diesel based on Green Chemistry Principles" RQ: “How would NaOH and CaO compare as alkaline based catalysts in a green synthesis of bio diesel from the transesterification of Vegetable Oil?" Independent Variable/s: Type of Catalyst - Homogeneous (NaOH) and Heterogeneous (CaO) [amount and concentration are control] Dependent Variables: Rate of Reaction Yield of bio-diesel Produced (might replace this with something else since yield is not affected by the catalyst; suggestions?) Amount of dissolved catalyst in produced bio-diesel (it affects the performance of the fuel) Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns? I'd appreciate some constructive criticism with anything on this post. I'm trying to get a solid grasp of my topic at this time so anything helps! Please point out the uncertainties and invalidities and I'll be thankful.
  24. Hello guys, Simple question, but maybe not as simple answer - Can my Chemistry IA be 13 pages long of the 13th page includes only the citations? I understand that the maximum page number is 12, and I tried to reduce the IA as much as I could, but I am stuck at 13. Thanks a lot 🙂
  25. Version 1.0.0

    4 downloads

These are notes that I took in my IB Chemistry class for the topic of Chemical Kinetics. It discusses rate law, integrated rate law, orders of reaction, etc.
