  1. Hey! I am writing my first article for IA from Microeconomics. I know that I have to focus on this particular unit (not brining up other topic from our syllabus). I am not sure whether what I want to describe is clearly a micro-case. It's an article about imposition of minimum wage in Ontario, the potential effect of which would be job losses. As the topic is a microeconomic one, I'm not sure whether the solution that I aim to propose is (unemployment is a part of MACROeconomy in the syllabus). I was thinking about offering subsidies to firms to increase the production and therefore, the demand for workers? But I'm not sure. Thanks for your opinions
  2. My friend and I coincidently chose the same topic for our IA and wrote our commentaries on it. But our articles are different, is there a need for changing the topic?
  3. Hi, Is my research question for an extended essay in economics to specific: "To what extent are hairdressers in *area* involved in gender price discrimination?" Please let me know!! Regards
  4. Okay so basically, I am doing an I.A on predicting the price of Ethereum, a crytocurrency, in 2018. It is very much like predicting a share price of a stock market, and I am having trouble with what to do with my data. I don't know how to use standard deviation and other things to draw conclusions, or even know how to make a normal distribution out of this. Please help
  5. Im a student in Sweden with the subjects; English A HL Economics HL History HL Math SL Swedish A SL ESS SL I'm very sure that I want to apply to an University in the UK, and study Economics. A school I'm very keen on is LSe (London School of Political and Economical Science). Courses of my interest; BSc Philosphy and Economics BSc Economics BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics They generally require International Baccalaureate: Diploma with 38 points including 7 6 6 at Higher level, including 7 in Mathematics Do they mean that it's a must to have a 7 in Math HL, or does a 7 in Math SL suffice? IF that's the case, is there any way to take an A exam (UK) in Maths? (My school doesn't offer Math HL)
  6. Now at the start of my 2nd term, 2nd year, I'm facing a choice... I'm very sure that i want to study an Economics course at a "better" University, One thing that I noticed (and I hope, not to late) is that both LSe (London School of Political Science and Economics), University of Cambridge and -Oxford requires Math HL (a score of 6 and 7) (LSe seems to accept Math SL but prefer HL) [Correct me if Im wrong] I have Math SL, and Math HL isn't offered at my School but I've seen that you can take Online course, at Pamoja (Fee: initial $300, and later $1000). The fee is something Im probably going to be forced to cover myself. Is there any chance at getting into LSe, either BSc Economics and Ecometrics, BSc Philosophy and Economics with an overall score of say 40, filling the requirements of 7 6 6, and Math SL? Or if Im going to switch to Math HL, is it Worth it? Is Pamoja good? My math ability is medium (Lack a good Foundation, havent taken Math seriously during a notable part of school, and I'm maybe to optimistic of achieving such a good Math HL grade needed for LSe or overestimating my Math ability or how diligent I am), but I'm very studious and isn't afraid to start and study very much now. By switching to Math HL I would also be a half year behind in that course and havent and idea of how big the difference is between Math SL and HL Otherwise, what is the "best" University in the UK that accepts an IB student with; 40 Points 7 7 6, or 7 6 6 (Economics HL, History HL and English A) Math SL 6 or 7 (If I would achieve such good grades) Thanks for any answers! Edit: I could also be focused on applying to a "more prominent" University...
  7. Hey everyone. So next year I’m going into the IB with- English A Literature, Chinese B, Economics, Chemistry, Maths HL and Physics. I really wanted to do Film HL but I thought it’s better to keep my options open and do two sciences instead as I would like to study engineering or medicine in uni. So im just wondering, would doing HL maths, physics and chemistry be way too much? I really love maths and I’m pretty decent at it. I’m also pretty good with managing workloads and im really interested in sciences but I still want to get a good final grade. Or would it be better to swap HL chemistry for HL Economics? Thanksss
  8. In my school, you have to submit a World Studies EE proposal, and I have no idea what to submit, but I know that I most likely want to do something around the areas of Maths and Economics. What are some potential concepts/ideas that combine these two disciplines together and do you have any sources for them. I genuinely am considering this option since I like both the subjects, but have no idea what to research on.

  10. I am in year 11 and I am doing AQA GSCE Psychology, which I really am not enjoying. I get A's and a few A*'s. I started doing Economics GSCE but changes to Psychology within the first two weeks because our teacher was extremely bad, meaning I have no prior economics knowledge. I'm extremely oriented towards humanities and my math isn't that good. I want to study Politics or Law in university. Right now, I really don't want to do Psychology for IB (we need to choose our subjects by next week) and I have a read a bit of Economics and it seems really interesting. My strong point is my memory. SO 1)How hard is it to get a 7 in HL econ? 2)Should I do it? (taking into consideration all of the above) 3)Will the fact that I have a strong memory help me ? 4)Will I get a disadvantage because of my really average math skills? 5)Anything other you want to advise me
  11. Does anyone know the ib avg. or the requirements to get accepted into the PEARL Programme at Keio University in Tokyo? I've contacted the admissions office but they only replied saying that they don't have any "cut-off" scores, and I was wondering if anyone knew a friend or student who got accepted to Keio PEARL.
  12. Hey guys! So I was earlier doing a micro economics EE, which had to be discarded because Primary data was becoming a problem. Now My teacher suggested that I do a development economics ee because it'll be quicker. Can someone please help me out with the topic and the structure?

    Recommendation letters

Hi, I'm thinking to applying to British universities for the course of accounting and finance. I was initially thinking to have my economics teacher write my recommendation letter but I read on the page from LSE for accounting and finance that you would be assessed on high numeracy skills and on strong analytical skills. So, I started to think that maybe I should get my maths teacher write my recommendation letter. I have good relationship with both the teachers and I take the 2 subjects as my HL courses, but I am doing better in Economics than in maths. What do you guys think?? Any suggestion/advice is very much appreciated!!
  14. I plan to do my Extended Essay on Economics, specifically price discrimination. Please share your thoughts on my Research Question and suggest how I can make it better.RQ : To what extent does the price discrimination that exists in the Cafes in Bukit Jelutong affects the consumer’s demand?I’ve noticed that the local Cafes where I live in, has a common practice of price discrimination for either students through student discounts or happy hours where any meals bought at a specific time is offered at a lower price. Being someone who enjoys these price discrimination, it has made me wonder how effective it actually is. Do these cafes actually experience higher customer traffic when such price discrimination is implemented? I plan to test this through analyzing whether the price discrimination leads to higher demand of the good.
  15. Hi! I'm considering taking econ SL or HL. I think I would like the subject but I'm not good t maths and I'm wondering if this would hinder to success in the subject. I found SL maths in preIB quite difficult and I'm going to take studies in the IB. How big of a role does maths play in econ and is there a difference in the amount of maths between SL and HL? Thanks already in advance!

  18. Hello, So this is especially for people who are struggling with Economics in their DP (like I did) and are aiming for a high-score. My teacher (who is an experienced IB economics teacher and examiner and who helped me get a 7 in Economics HL) has come up with this unique way of supporting students across the IB spectrum and help them achieve the top marks they deserve. She's hosting an assessment preparation weekend which will cover strategies to ace the assessments for both the internal and external components of the IB economics exam. To know more and register your interest, kindly go to https://goo.gl/forms/BS193aryx8zEFgqR2 PM me if you have any questions, I will forward them to her Hope this helps _^
  19. Im taking Economics SL in IB because I took economics in my IGCSE, however, my batch is the first batch taking the Economics IB exam. What actually are the topics needed to be learnt for Standard level or SL? My teacher is unsure of it himself. please help!
  20. Hi! So I'm coming up to the end of year 10, and have gotten textbooks for IB. I would really like to study ahead in the holidays, especially for economics, a subject I have had no experience with. As I have had no experience, I have no idea how to start studying. The textbook I have is Economics for the IB Diploma, published by Cambridge. If anyone has any recommendations, tips or any experience at all related to this, please let me know!! Thank you
  21. Hi! I'm starting IB after the summer break and I am really interested in computer science, and it is a subject I will take. I understand the implications of taking it for when it comes to uni and that it will have little impact on any uni courses. I will also be taking econ, I'm just a bit afraid because from what I hear cs at HL sounds crazy hard. I am fairly competent in computer databases, systems and whatnot but I still fear that Cs HL would be too hard would changing Cs HL to sl and econ from sl to HL make sense, especially considering I have never taken any courses in economics? Thanks for any responses.
  22. Guys I'm writing my economics extended essay. My topic is about venezuela's economic crisis (hyperinflation) and my research question is How do the Venezuelan Government’s CPI values vary from the real market values? But the problem is that I really cannot find out which products are used to calculate Venezuela's CPI and the government hasn't released any data since 2015. Plus I cannot find the prices of the products they currently sell in Venezuela. It's just IMPOSSIBLE. My initial RQ was about the cause of this inflation but my EE supervisor told me that with that topic I'll never get an A. Can you please help me with my RQ?? + I changed it to To what extent have the government intervention and declining oil prices affected Venezuela's inflation rate? Does this question sound all right?
  23. Hey guys! I'm starting IBDP soon and am thinking about taking the following subjects English A (Language and Literature) HL Spanish SL Math SL (Math HL is not an option for me) Business and Management HL Economics HL Biology SL I am 99% sure that I want to pursue a business degree after high school and am currently looking at applying to Canada (UBC, UofT, YorkU). I was wondering if taking both BnM and Econ is a bad decision. Do universities really prefer that you take only one of the two? Even if you want to do your undergrad in business? Thank you all.
  24. Hi, I am trying to come up with an EE topic (I am already pretty late on this whole EE thing) and the only subject left for me to do it in is economics I came up with the idea of producing my EE around the topic of books and ebooks, mostly because an uncle of mine actually runs a book distribution company and can help me a lot in finding info. My research question right now is: "To what extent did the introduction of e-books in affect the demand and sales for paperback books in the São Paulo region of Brazil?". I live in São Paulo, Brazil, by the way... While I think this might be pretty viable, it has a few problems as the demand and sales for books and e-books is constantly changing everywhere, for many reasons, especially now in the economic mess Brazil is. Because of this, I think it would be very hard to form a cause-and-effect relationship between the books and e-books. Also, according to this uncle of mine, who knows quite a bit about the topic, it would be hard to find information regarding specific sales and the effects of e-books in any one city or region of Brazil, but finding info for the whole country might be possible. As I mentioned, this topic seemed good at first but now presents many practical problems. It would be nice to be able to stick to the whole books theme, but if it's not possible, I will switch to another topic. Anyhow, does anyone have any suggestions, ideas or anything to say on the topic? Anything would be useful really, so if you can think of something please send it my way! Thank you in advance! PS - I've also heard that it might be a good idea to keep my EE focused on microeconomics. Is that true? Thanks again
