  1. Hey y'all I have my IOP due in around 2 weeks and I've barely done anything because I keep confusing myself about what to do. We have looked at a lot of texts in class surrounding themes of class distinction (these include the Dolls House by Katherine Mansfield, The Dead by James Joyce and Opportunity by Charlotte Grimshaw). I want to do my IOP surrounding the characters and their perceptions of class distinction and how it affects their behaviour, but I'm worried there's not enough depth in that. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what kind of ideas I could explore in the realm of the theme of class distinction. I'm not too worried about the creativity aspect of it, but more the analysis as I really want a 7!! Thanks heaps xx
  2. English-wise, is a campaign launched/introduced/established/etc?
  3. Can anybody who's already done their FOA2 just share what they did here? I need some inspiration..... I was thinking something along the lines of the language of lyrics in pop songs but that feels really cliche. Also, our teacher allowed us to do the first FOA with a partner. I really want to work with my FOA1 partner for this second one too- is that allowed?
  4. Hello, I'm currently in year 1 of IB and I'm contemplating whether I should drop Chemistry HL to Chemistry SL. Also, I would like to know whether or not I'm required to take it at HL if I want to study undergrad bio in Canada or the US. Reasons why I want to drop: - Bad grades 4s and 5s sometimes 3s - I'm only doing it to strengthen my application - The Chem SL teacher is better - I love English literature My current subjects are: Chem HL, Bio HL, Business HL, English Lit SL, Math SL, Arabic Ab inito If I drop to Chem SL: English A Lit HL, Bio HL, Business HL, Chemistry SL, Math SL, Arabic Ab inito I've been thinking about this for the past three weeks and I'd appreciate much-needed advice!!!! Thank you!
  5. Hi. I've decided to do my EE in English, focusing on Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. I'm not getting any good advice from my supervisor, and the internet isn't really helping me. I've gone through a lot of book changes prior to this, more specifically dystopian and feminist books. However, I've read that these are really overused topics, so I wanted to try to think out of the box. I decided to choose Percy Jackson because I think that there is a lot of content I can analyze for my 4,000 words. It's okay to choose a relatively 'easy' book for EE, right? Right now, I need help on choosing a topic and formulating a good research question. Honestly, I'm stuck at choosing which topic I should focus on. I'm scared if the topics I have in mind will be good enough for an EE. I would really appreciate feedback on the topics, and the research questions that come along with them. Here's what I have so far. 1. The Portrayal of Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief How does Riordan portray classic characters from ancient Greek mythology in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief? : Classic vs revised character traits of the Greek gods How does Riordan associate ancient Greek mythology with modern literature in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: Plots of the original Greek myths affected by modern technology, environment, characteristics of the Greek gods, etc. 2. Family Roles in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief How does Riordan portray family roles in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: Nature of family, duties and responsibilities of a parent and a child; how gods neglect their roles as parents, and how their demigod children are expected to do more 3. Coming of Age in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief How does Riordan portray the coming of age in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: How internal conflicts faced by the character is portrayed in the form of monsters and evil villains 4. The Hero Concept in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief How does Riordan define the meaning of a hero in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: Characteristics of a hero; analysing different characters and how they are considered heroes
  6. I’m trying to decide the subjects to pick for my IB studies next year. Biology and chemistry hl have already been decided as I’m trying to get into medicine. My current placeholder of a choice is studying psychology hl, maths sl, and language A lang and lit, and ab initio Arabic (on top of bio and chem hl). I honestly don’t know if it’s a good idea to study three sciences (yes, I’m counting psychology) at hl! I didn’t get to study psychology during my middle years as my school didn’t offer the subject, but I’m really interested in the subject. Am I setting myself up for misery and anxiety ridden nights before and after the exams or is the combination that I’ve currently chosen feasible enough? And by the way, does an ab initio second language count as an SL subject and bear the same grading weights or am I supposed to study an extra subject??
  7. I feel so conflicted right now because I don't know what to choose for my EE and I wanted to finalize my topic over a week ago! PLEASE HELP ! I wanted to do chemistry since it is something I plan to major in, so I came up with the question "To what extent does silverskin black garlic provide a reliable source of antioxidants ?" I thought it was a good topic, but the question is more biology, and unfortunately, I am not taking biology. I asked my chemistry teacher for some advice and he said that there was a reason no year 2s did chemistry as their subject. He said it would be too much work for an experiment since there would be a lot of error and it would be hard to write 4000 words on a topic that you do not know very well about. A lot of year 2 students agreed with him and recommended that I do english or history since it would be wayy easier. I really wanted to do this topic since I know I would be way more interested in it but now I feel like it would be harder than I imagine. Another teacher said chemistry is doable but difficult; however if done well it can look very good. I don't know exactly what do to for english or history. For history I am interested in Lenin, Mussolini, Hitler, and Mao But I am lost in what I should do. Please help me. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
  8. Hey! I'm an English HL student and my first written task 1 is due... tomorrow! You guys have any ideas for a good written task in the topics Bad Language, Rhetoric, Bias in News media, Imperial Legacy or Translation, I would be, like, super grateful! Thanks:)):):)
  9. Hi all, I just wanted to know how difficult it's going to be for me to study and succeed in IB. I'm currently studying in grade 10 and I'll most probably start studying according to IB's curriculum next year. I'm currently studying the Holt McDougal Modern Chemistry, English Literature/writing, Biology, and Phyiscs. The McGraw Hill Algebra 2 on top of social studies, Farsi literature/writing and Arabic. I find all of the subjects I'm studying relatively easy (except Farsi. Even though it's my mother language), and I aced all of my finals last term. But I'm kinda stressed to be studying IB as I have no idea about the difficulty level. The hl subjects that I'm gonna pick are biology, chemistry, Farsi and English (I have no idea whether it's gonna be A or B; it's mandatory to study Farsi and English hl at my school) I want to study medicine and I looked at dozens of university admission requirements for the said course; most of the universities I'm interested in require a minimum of 6 in bio hl and chem hl on top of an overall score of 38/45. As I said, I just want to know how much energy I'll need to exert on my studies and how difficult it'll be to meet the mentioned requirements. Your insight would be appreciated! Edit: Do I need to study physics as wrll to get into medicine? I'm already picking Math sl so not sure how that'll work.

  12. Hi So I'm currently in the middle of drafting my final IOP for english HL for a poem by Bruce Dawe "Doctor to Patient" I've discussed with my teacher and we've bounced ideas around; so far, I'm planning to present my IOP as the character of Bruce Dawe's doctor, and present my response poem to my "prop" (classmate) before kicking them out, (trying to showcase the "laziness of the unemployed" that Dawe blames in his poem) then to begin the analytical part of the iop I would conduct it over a fake phone call, where the person on the other line is asking why I would write something like this in comparison to Dawe, then I would say "Well what do you mean she's done this? it's clearly because of ..." etc etc. I'm worried about this approach because I've never done a creative iop, and I don't want it to get too repetitive? any tips or comments would be appreciated thank you!
  13. Hi, I'm currently in year 12 (second year ib) and writing my final EE essay. I'm having some troubling not straying from the topic too far since I've only one main point and a only few subpoints (which are slightly weak since they focus more on the morals that the novel targets but not exactly the structure or language). My topic is: How does the letter structure of The White Tiger reflect the purpose of the novel and thus the reader's understanding and intepretation of Balram's actions? And my question is what are some other aspects I should explore to make sure I have enough content while at the same time not straying from the topic, and how the epistolary structure contributes to the White Tiger's theme of individuality.
  14. Hi, I am doing an EE in English category 3 and I am going to be writing about explicit and/or implicit misogyny in pop and rap music and kind of how the language alters social standards for the lyrics, does anyone have or have done a similar topic and knows any good resources that I can use? Thank you!
  15. What benefits will I gain if I take 3 languages in the IB Program. (I'm primarily going into English based , or a Law based future career) Will I become more appealing to universities or something?
  16. I UPLOADED MY ESSAY ON THE IBO AND IT WAS WITH A TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT. MY TEACHER TLD ME THAT THE FONT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ARIAL LAST MINUTE. WILL MY ESSAY GET A FAILING GRADE BECAUSE OF THAT?
  17. Hi everyone! Ok so, my original Extended Essay research question was "How are the common themes of betrayal and love portrayed differently in the Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” when compared to the tragedy “King Lear.” However, my adviser said that it was too narrow for an EE and I should compare two different playwrights instead. I'm not really interested in going outside of Shakespeare, so I have decided to completely change my topic. I'm still sticking to English Literature, but I think I'm leaning towards novels instead. This is where I need help. I really want to do something with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" since it's a beautiful book, relates to me personally, and I haven't seen it used in any Extended Essays so far. Besides that, I don't really know which direction I should go in. A little guidance or some suggestions would be helpful and much appreciated. Also, if my original topic could be somehow be salvaged, I'd be incredibly grateful for that. Thank you so much! Update: I did some research and I'm considering maybe comparing "A Thousand Splendid Suns" with "The Bastard of Istanbul." Lemme know what you think! Thanks!
  18. I have my English IOP coming up, and I'm not sure how to bring a creative aspect to my English final IOP. I'd really appreciate any tips!
  19. Hi Guys, I have my final IOC day after tomorrow, please let me know if you have any tips. Hoping that y'all did/oing a good job. Thank you very much.
  20. Can anyone help me with a suggestion on a good book for category one, and any works that would compare well with it? Please help me.
  21. Hi, I'm on the fence about a few of my IB courses. I want to major in Psychology and attend an Ivy League Law school after I graduate. I wanted to do History but our school, unfortunately, doesn't offer it. I'm currently in grade 10 Chemistry and have an A-plus; moreover, I'll be doing grade 10 Biology next semester. Apart from the fact that I like Biology, I believe that taking that course will make me appear to be a more well-rounded student who is good at both sciences and social sciences. I've never taken Psychology or Business classes before; however, I'm interested in them, especially Psychology. Option 1: HL: English, Psychology, Biology SL: French, Math, Business and Management Option 2: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Environmental Systems and Societies Option 3: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Biology
  22. I have been struggling in starting my EE lately. I would like to not that writing an extended essay in english language wasn't my first choice, but seeing that one in mathematics or physics is going to be 10x harder I chose English. Don't get me wrong, I love reading and writing, if I didn't I wouldn't have chosen it. Alright. My question is : Is fantasy a good genre to write about in an EE? I've seen successful essays on Lord of the Rings for example, and I am considering the trilogy as an option for my EE, but is fantasy as a genre a viable option? It is safe to say that the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George RR Martin is on the top of my list if I were to write about fantasy, so this gets us to my second part of the question, is A Song of Ice and Fire good to write about? I am perfectly focusing on serious literary analysis/criticism, maybe putting one of the ASOIAF books in comparison with one of the LotR books, but not to jump to far away, can anyone help me in my struggle? Would be greatly appreciated as the idea has been growing on me lately since I saw many good aspects of the books and many people composing good research question about this series.
  23. Hello. I'm thinking of writing my EE based on Disney movies. My RQ would be: "How does Disney movies in the past 10 years portray American gender stereotypes?" 1. Is this suitable for category 2b? 2. Is the RQ narrow enough? Or should it be more specific? 3. I'm not quite sure about the gender stereotype part since gender stereotypes can apply to many countries. So, does focusing on mainly american stereotypes fit the requirements of cat 2b? Thanks for helping
  24. Hi, Im having trouble deciding exactly what my ee research question is. Im doing one comparing the giver and the handmaidens's tale and looking at what characterizes dystopian novel such as these, is that a good enough reasearch question or too broad? I separated my essay into looking at: What is supposed to be the ideal? Who is in charge(benefiting)? here i also looked at how they ruled with both fear or respect and how they contrasted Who is paying (losing)? Who tries to stop it? And then my teacher suggested I look at what this says about us, but I fear this may be cutting it too close to the word limit. In general, if you have any suggestions or ideas, I'd be happy to hear them!
  25. Hi. I'm thinking of writing my EE based on Disney's Frozen since I enjoy movies so much and deep down in me I'm a big fan of Disney movies My RQ would be "How does the portrayal of gender stereotypes in Disney's Frozen effect the self esteem of children in the US?" 1. Is it narrow enough? Or should I narrow it down to female/male stereotypes? Is 'self esteem' specific enough? 2. This is under category 2b right? Please correct me if I'm wrong Thanks in advance for helping
