  1. Mine was Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys interview with main character ( Antoinette Cosway)
  2. Hey guys, I will be doing my IOP this year, and my topic will be Macbeth and Hamlet ( Macbeth being the book we are reading this year). In terms of comparing the plays, I most likely will speak to Supernatural elements and what makes them both Greek tragedies. There is so much I can compare between these two plays though! However, I'm rather stuck on making it into a creative solo format. When we've done something creative presentation in class, it was with 2+ people. Just wanted to ask any of your previous creative formats for Solo IOPS (just for inspiration /an idea!), or any potential random ideas that come off the top of your head. When I think of a creative presentation I can only think of acting...which requires two people at least *sighs* . So help, please
  3. Hi So I'm currently in the middle of drafting my final IOP for english HL for a poem by Bruce Dawe "Doctor to Patient" I've discussed with my teacher and we've bounced ideas around; so far, I'm planning to present my IOP as the character of Bruce Dawe's doctor, and present my response poem to my "prop" (classmate) before kicking them out, (trying to showcase the "laziness of the unemployed" that Dawe blames in his poem) then to begin the analytical part of the iop I would conduct it over a fake phone call, where the person on the other line is asking why I would write something like this in comparison to Dawe, then I would say "Well what do you mean she's done this? it's clearly because of ..." etc etc. I'm worried about this approach because I've never done a creative iop, and I don't want it to get too repetitive? any tips or comments would be appreciated thank you!
  4. I have completed my IOP a few days back and I have worked incredibly hard on it. Many of my classmates prior to my presentation highly praised my ideas and unique execution. I love presenting and especially have a passion for English. Unfortunately, I went over time by two minutes and I was wondering how many points that would take off of my score. I aim for a seven on my IOP, and I would like to know if I still have a shot at it.
  5. I have my English IOP coming up, and I'm not sure how to bring a creative aspect to my English final IOP. I'd really appreciate any tips!
  6. Hey everyone! So for my upcomming IOP in 2 weeks, I am planning to do one on Wide Sargasso Sea. So far I managed to form a thesis of "The author Jean Rhys presents the theme of Alienation through exclusion of the characters in the novel based on race, wealth and status, appearance and shared cultural symbols and values." I chose this thesis primarily after going through interrelationships between the characters of the novel. Primarily, these factors in my thesis are brought through: poverty, appearance (creole). Alienation that leads to destructive acts in the novel - Anette marries mr mason driven by exclusion in society which leads to the loss of her son, home and sanity Daniel Cosway alienated from society obsessed to avenge his step father hurting antoinette's relationship through letters Antoinette is alienated from her own self by madness and her own husband chnages her name (identity affected). Overall, are there any pointers I should work on and I am open to any suggestions for a good hook and better way to incorporate my thesis with my evidence Thanks
  7. Hi guys, I'm in my 1st year of the DP and we're going to be doing our IOP in January - so far we've done 'The Great Gatsby', 'De:TALES' and 'In Praise of Shadows'. Right now, I'm thinking of doing a presentation on how Tanizaki (author of 'In Praise of Shadows') portrayed the Japanese way of life similar to that of the way of life which is recommended in Heidegger's 'Sein und Zeit'*. I was also thinking of doing a presentation on the difference of the perception of beauty in 'The Great Gatsby' and 'In Praise of Shadows'. I'd really appreciate some help! I'm indecisive as hell and my English teacher isn't really helping me out... *I feel as if I would lose the literary nature of the presentation through this Thanks in advance

    German IOP

I'm having my IOP's in German soon. We looked at the Books Jakob der Lügner, Homo Faber and Das Parfüm. We also watched the films. Generally speaking does any of you have any recommendation what to do if we have to analyze and compare two works? What specific aspect would you look at?
  11. I'm not sure if anyone's doing this book but i'm basing my IOP on "The English Teacher" by R.K Narayan focusing on the effect of language in the book or the portrayal of Indian culture and stereotypes in the book. I don't want to g the analytical way because that's what i did the past two times so any one have any ideas for presenting it in a creative way? Thanks
  12. Our english teacher told us that the audience's reaction to our presentation will also be an important part of our grade. So our teacher will deduct points from our gades if he notices people sleeping or looking disinterested. Do you guys know how to make an audience full of teenagers actually look interested during a presentation ?
  13. My IOP is next week and I don't know what to do. I wanted to do drawings showing the dynamic development of Marguerite, but I don't know how to present it. Like how do I open the presentation? and how do I close it? Please help.
  14. I have my IOP coming up for ELA and I am still having some trouble to come up with solid ideas on what to say and how I should present it. I'm doing my IOP on "The Great Gatsby" with the topic "Discuss the potential that Daisy is the antagonist in the novel." I choose to talk about how Daisy’s character is controversial, as one may argue that her presence is detrimental to Gatsby’s life; therefore, Daisy is a catalyst for Gatsby demise. I have a few ideas for the subject, but I wanted to hear about other people's opinions on how she acts as the antagonist within the novel. Thank you
  15. Hi, Criterion B for the IOP evaluates the strategies used to interest the audience. In order to get full marks for this criterion, do I need to create unique/creative strategies (e.g. a skit, an interactive component), or will the usual presentation strategies suffice? (Like audibility, eye contact, gestures). Thanks!
  16. Hello all! For my individual oral presentation for IB Literature, I am planning to give a performance based off of the book The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. I want to do a performative-type IOP, where I will be talking from the point of view of one of the characters named Dave Jensen. The purpose of my IOP will be to explain/perform the development of his relationship with another character in the story and what that means for Jensen himself. I was a bit confused on how to do this at first, but my idea now is this: my IOP will take the form of my character writing several diary entries, each creating a near story-arc in the characters' relationship. While reading aloud the entries I will be miming the actions that I describe in the diary. I feel that this can help me build emotion while still digging deep into what one of the characters is feeling. My main question, however, is about the "analytical purpose" of this performance. Acting is great and all, but is that enough? If I had to physically analyze the character, how would I be able to do that in a dramatic performance rather than a formal speech? Should I include a little introduction describing what my performance is supposed to convey? And if so, should that introduction simply be that "this performance seeks to reveal Dave Jensen's characteristic that _______" ? I'm sorry for bombarding you with questions, but I hope that this was specific enough to ask for help. Thank you!
  17. Hello fellow IB students, IOP presentations start in a couple of weeks for my class and I am having a hard time thinking of a topic. We have to focus on the authors James Baldwin or Joan Didion and their works. We have been reading essays written by them in class. Does anyone have any IOP topic suggestions?
  18. Hello, I have decided to do a poem for my IOP since it seems like the easiest option, but I really don't know which one I should do. Does anyone have any suggestions for good poems? I would also appreciate suggestions regarding presentation ideas for Wide Sargasso Sea or Zoo Story!
  19. I'm doing my IOP on 1984 by George Orwell and how is it similar to president trump. should I change my topic?
  20. I have to start doing my IOP and I get to choose from "Hamlet" by Shakespeare, "1984" by George Orwell and "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelly. I chose "Hamlet" and I was thinking about doing my topic on Horatio. The topic would be about what I think the sequel to "Hamlet" would be and what would happen in it. I want to make my presentation really interesting so any suggestions? Also, is my topic a valid one for the IOP?

  22. Hi guys!! I'm in need. I must admit Lang A is not my best subject, but unfortunately I still have to do all the assigments, in this case, IOP. The title of my IOP is "how Conrad portrayed colonialism in "the Heart of Darkness" and eventhough it may sound quite easy, I do not how to start. Do you have any tips on acing the presentation? Thanks in advance x
  23. I'm having extreme difficulties in coming up with an IOP topic. I'm doing The Merchant of Venice, but any idea I come up with can't be supported or is just plain dumb. I've been reading countless other threads on this, and I found someone who said you can look at characters through a framework. His example was looking at Shylocke as a marxist; is something like this a good topic? I'd imagine you'd be able to find some evidence to support it but it would have to be taken out of context since Shakespeare couldn't possibly have been trying to achieve this. How do you choose a good topic? What am I supposed to be looking for?
  24. Hello. I have a few questions I would like to ask about my upcoming IOC and IOP in late March. I asked these questions to my teacher but she didn't seem 100% sure. 1. Can we bring as many notes as we want into the PREPARATION room, but only take in 1 A4 paper into the RECORDING room? 2. How many notes can we bring in for our IOP? 3. Is it okay if our IOC is relatively short, even 5 minutes long? (I don't aim to get a 7 in self taught, I just want to pass, but I am really worried about this because when practicing with my extracts I could only get to 5 minutes on most of them, will this be enough to pass?) 4. What happens if you simply read off your notes? (I know this is not allowed but I just wanted to know just how much it affects your grade, is it an automatic 0?) Thank you.
  25. Hello Guys, I am totally new to this site but I am panicking it is 11:40 pm here right now and my IOP is due tomorrow. I know my theme and what I am doing it on but I have no idea how to structure my power point. I am doing a comparison and romantic poetry and jazz music, and how they were both expressing freedom in their own era. Thank you so much in advance if you can help!
