  1. I'm planning to do Economics at the UK for uni and was wondering which HL would be better for me, psych or history HL? My other subjects: HL - Math, Economics SL - Biology, Eng Lang Lit, French ab initio Thanks in advance!
  2. Hi, I have started the first year of the IB Diploma Programme. I am taking Language A at SL, Language B at HL, philosophy at SL (I have no other choice, but so far all my grades were around 7), Turkey in the Twentieth Century (this is an SL only course only for Turkish students), Physics HL and Maths HL. I think physics HL and maths HL are quite a lot when taken together (It's not like I am bad at them, my score is generally better than most of my classmates, but I do not know how I would fare in an actual, IB style exam, since ,n my school we try to learn both the IB curriculum and the national curriculum.), but they seem to be unnecessary for someone who wants to go into philosophy in the future. I wanted to drop physics HL and take Turkish A HL instead, but I learnt that ability in physics and maths is a strong predictor of philosophical analysis skills. With that in mind, do you think I should switch? I will contact admissions offices of Yale, Stanford, Princeton, Brown, Amherst etc. as well.
  3. Hi everyone, I am currently studying in Year 12 (Grade 11) and I'm wondering when do I apply. I visited many different Canadian unis website but all I can see is dates and deadline. Do I apply during my senior year or after my graduation? Because I see IB general requirement for a score to be eligible to apply, but wouldn't that be finalized after my graduation? Another concern that I have is that if I have to use my predicted score to apply this post-2019, I wouldn't get accepted since I'm going to be honest, my first term score is horrible: Mathematics SL 3, Computer Science HL 4, English A SL 4, Business Management HL 6, French AB 4, Music HL 5, Overall 26. But I believe that I can get my grades up since my first term grades have been a reminder of how much I have to work for IB and my grades have improved after term 2's mock exams. But is it too late now? My desired university is McMaster and some other Ontario unis such as Brock and Guelph. And I want to major in Computer Science. Also, this next question goes to everyone who major or majored in computer science in Canada. I have seen the IB general requirement for McMaster and it includes "Two of Sciences: Biology, Chemistry or Physics". But since I have decided a long time ago that I want to study computer science, I chose CS for group 4(Experimental and sciences). Does this mean I will not be eligible to apply? I am kind of in a dark and don't know how Canadian universities admission works since I would be the first (hopefully) to go study abroad in my gigantic family tree. I'm in a British international school that has quite a low reputation for alumni who went to a decent Canadian university. So literally I have no one to consult. Thank you very much 😊

    Applying to the Netherlands

On Studielink, I have added both my own phone number as "Telephone number" and my father's phone number (just in case) as "Telephone number 2". However, several universities are including the second phone number as my main one, and I can only change my contact details on Studielink. I have deleting the second phone number from Studielink and also making the "Telephone number 2" field the same as "Telephone number", but nothing has worked. I keep saving the changes, but nothing actually changes. Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

    University of Arts London

Planning on going to art school but I have no idea what the sufficient grade for this school is?? Like they don't have a required score out of 45. I mean it does mention IB but just states qualifications equivalent to A Levels (e.g. IB)? Does this mean I just need to pass IB? Like a 24 (12 total in HL, no lv2 and no lv 1in SL) will do? This hasn't been the first art school with vague requirements. Could someone elaborate? Thank you so much
  6. Hello, what subject choices would be more acceptable for a business major in a competitive/elite university in the US(Ivy's) or the UK My current subjects: HL: English Literature, Business Management, Biology SL: Math Standard, Language Acquisition B Indonesian, Economics Should I change it to: HL: English Literature, Business Management, Math SL: Environmental Societies and Systems (ESS), Language Acquisition B Indonesian, Economics *my school doesn't offer economics HL, and math HL isn't really mandatory for business, but biology HL isn't either, and both are rigorous subjects. Should I stay in biology even though I don't need it (does it make me more competitive?) or take up Math HL and ESS?
  7. Hi, so my subject choices are currently HL: Bio, Business Management, English Lit SL: Lang B, Economics, Math *my school doesn't offer economics hl For a competitive university in the US or UK, would it be okay if I take HL: Lang B, Business, English Lit SL: Biology or ESS?, Economics, Math or should I keep my current subject choices? I don't know if I should keep Biology HL since I'm not sure if I really need it - and I wouldn't know what to replace it with. - Does the Ivy League look more on subject choices or the total IB score/predicted??
  8. "To what extent was the cold war responsible for the separation between North Korea and South Korea?" is this too broad? please someone help how i should phrase my research question. I really do have interest and a lot of knowledge in this area (the Korean War) & (The Cold War)
  9. I want to study a hospitality degree in Canada instead of Switzerland because I can't stay back and work thereafter graduation. However, I don't find any school which offer the course. Please help me out! Thank you!
  10. Hi all, I am starting IB next year and I'm starting to have my doubts. I've been reading a lot online and it's putting me off, so I'm trying to regain my confidence. I was just wondering whether Australian Universities like/favour IB students? Thanks,

    SL or HL Maths?

Hey guys, I'm in a pretty stressful situation as I can't decide whether to change my current SL Math to HL Math, and we're already getting to the point where it is too late to change. My situation: Currently taking HL Bio, Chem, Eng A Lang/Lit, Danish B and SL Math, and History. I want to study medicine in the UK after I graduate in 2020, and my dream is to go to Cambridge, but as I've read on their website only 2% of acceptances go to those who only have 2 subjects out of HL Bio, Chem, Phys, and Math. As I can only have two sciences, my only option is to switch to HL math (which is already quite a bit ahead of SL) to push myself out of those ridiculously low chances (on top of the already low chance of getting into Cambridge). I've talked with my teacher about it and he said that it would be incredibly difficult to catch up, but think I would be able to. My main concern is whether the work I have to put into getting that 6 in Math HL will damage my grades in my other classes (currently getting 7 in Bio and Chem which I definitely need to keep), and whether it would be better to simply stay in SL Math and get a 7 in that class without as much effort. Thanks for any help, I am really stressed about what to do cause I know that HL Math would look better on my diploma but I'm not sure whether it would overall look worse if I get a worse grade in HL than I would have in SL and my points go down cause of it. Edit: Realised I forgot to write about why I posted it on the maths forum. Mainly looking for advice from people in HL who can tell me if it would be too difficult, as someone who is good at math but no genious. Currently have a high 7 in standard but I have heard that the gap between SL and HL is so massive that it means nothing. Was wondering what you guys think and as a person who is okay with math, but doesn't love it, if they could survive HL math.
  12. I'm aiming to get into the Health Sciences program at McMaster University or Life Sciences at UofT, but I'm wondering whether I should take HL or SL chemistry. I know that it would be easier to get higher grades in SL, but I've also heard that HL helps a lot in terms of understanding university content. How much of a difference is there between the two? Are marks more important or is knowledge more important? For those who have taken HL - how much does it help in uni?
  13. I had ideas in mind such as joining internships, organizing events, starting clubs, school president etc., but I'm not sure what else to do. I wanted to start a non-profit but that's difficult to do especially since I'm in high school, any ideas?? - I also got internship opportunities at a lab hospital but that does not really have anything to do with my area of study?
  14. Hi, lots of my friends move to study in UK, USA, Spain or France, but I don't know anyone who decided to continue his education in Germany. Do you have any idea of what is the IB Diploma recognition for German universities? I heard that taking at least one HL science subject is a must. If it turns out to be true I'm really done, because I take Geography, Polish A: Literature and English B HL and Biology, Bussiness management and Maths SL. Could any person living or studing in Germany tell me something about the higher education system? Thanks for the mountain.

    is it worth it

I will be starting my two years of IB diploma in September but have been seriously doubting my choice. Will IB help me get into a good med school or will it just cause me pain and stress? my schedule is IB english 20, IB history 20, IB TOK ethics 20, IB Math foundations 30, IB Health science 20 and second semester it is IB world literature, IB History 20, IB Health science 20, IB Pre calc 30, Communication Media-Film 20 and IB French 20 I will also be taking IB phycology, law and physical science 20 over the summer.
  16. So i finished last year the IB with 30 points (29 + 1 for TOK but i lost one point because there was a fraud problem in history HL which was one of my courses so they just put an average on everyone) and i also got the bilingual diploma for english and spanish. With that i wonder which unis or in which countries can i study a humanities degree with this. I am currently taking a german course (currentlu b1) but i doubt i will take the DAF before i must apply to unis if i want to start in april. In any case any help or infor you can give me is appreciated.

    Joint Honors Inquiry

Hi, I have just finished my first year of IB, and I am planning to apply for a Joint Honours Course in Economics/Mathematics in the United Kingdom. My inquiry is that are Joint Honours degrees (in England specifically) for four years.
  18. Gahhh, I've taken an interest in applying to Irish universities in 2018, and then I see this (I attached the screenshot of the entry requirements page at one of the unis above). What do you guys think? I'm super stressed as it is, and honestly, I am so afraid. Do you think that the change will be positive or negative? With positive, I mean lowering the requirements and making it easier for IB students? I have absolutely no idea what to expect and I keep thinking about it every single day, which makes me incredibly stressed :(( Also, sorry in advance if this is in a wrong section or anything, I have never posted before so I'm a bit unsure about this whole forum!

    Failed IB experiment

Long story short, I did a bio extended essay, messed up the experiment, instead of isolated colonies I got a single weird blob. No data collected. Failed the experiment. Am I allowed to use external data to support my arguments?

    Glendon BA at York

hey guys, so I was checking course enrollment and the degree requirement/ "anatomy of a glendon BA" manual at York and it mentioned a "bilingual requirement"? does this mean that french is mandatory? If so, my ab initio level isn't going to help me much 😕
  21. Hi...I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I know I'm going to be studying sciences in university, but I'm not exactly sure what type of science I'm getting into. It's a bit stressful because I have my own preferences, while my parents' disagreement with these preferences make me scared to the bone. I know I want to take Chemistry at Higher Level, but my problem is between biology and physics (+ computer science, but I'd rather NOT get into that.) at HL. You see, I'm studying MYP right now and so far I really enjoy Biology and find it very interesting. As discussed with my careers counsellor, I could take my bachelor in Bio OR Chem and then take my Masters in Biochemistry, which I thought was a great idea because it is two subjects I enjoy (to a certain extent, but I'd also rather NOT get into that). My parents don't think that's a great idea though. My dad says I'm limiting myself wayyyyyyyyy too much (like a mouse hole kind of too much) if I delve straight into my masters after my bachelor. Sure, I get that. Maybe I'll work with my bachelor in Chem for a while. But that's also very limiting, apparently, and my only option is to take Chemistry and Physics/Computer science to get a bachelor in engineering. Except I dread Physics/ I'm not-so-great at it. And I've heard it's a death wish to take it at HL if I'm not ready to put in the effort or enjoy it to the fullest. News Flash: I'm not! (As for computer science, well, I'm not very sure because I've never studied it, but I'd assume I wouldn't be fascinated by the unduly amount of numbers and problem solving that seems to give high-paying jobs all around). The thing is, I'm not going to get into medicine. Not a doctor or radiologist or pharmacist. And Biology is practically a dead end to my parents, very shameful, if I don't want to be a doctor (which, I repeat, I DO NOT). I'm trying to cooperate with my parents by going into sciences (trust me, it's not my first choice), but I'd like to at least do something I like (to some certain extent). However, it seems like unless I get into computer science or Physics (engineering, really, is assumed to be the only job that'll get you some bucks here), I won't be successful. I've been told it's best to cry now and not later, but I'm not sure if that's necessarily true. I think if I take Physics and end up being an engineer I'll be crying 'til the rest of my days. But, at the same time, why should I trust myself? I'm a kid and puberty and hormones and total ignorance makes me rethink my choices in taking Chemistry and Biology at HL. Should I just take Physics and Chemistry and cry in a Ferrari? Sorry for the rambling. I appreciate any and all responses.
  22. Hello everybody, So i did the IB exams may 2017 and I ended up with a final result of 27 points which I am quite pleased with considering how I really struggled throughout the programme and was predicted to fail. However, the only grade I don't like is the grade 2 I got in Maths SL. I really regret taking SL and wish would have taken Studies instead. I am actually going to resit Maths SL and although I have studied, it has been a struggle to do so independently. I am interested in applying for UK unis in 2019 and I have found several unis that accept 27 points. (I want to study architecture). Anyway, my question is, if I don't manage to get a better grade, can they overlook my 2 in Maths? I am thankful for your answers.

    Please help - university options

Hello. I'm very confused and I feel like I can't talk to my parents about this anymore or any of my teachers, so I'm trying here. My dilemma: I would say I'm quite wishy-washy in terms of what subject I want to study. I know I want to do something science related, but I don't know what exactly it is at this point. My parents want me to study medicine because their reasoning is that I should go for a job where I won't have to work for anyone (they're against me entering the corporate world and to an extent, I agree with them). Now my problem is that I'm not exactly against doing medicine, there are some aspects that I find interesting - what I'm trying to say is that I'm not absolutely against it, but I'm not sure I would be able to succeed as well. I'm interested in psychology and biomedical research, things like genetics and stem cells. I applied for medicine courses via UCAS, and I applied to Irish universities for med. I'm still waiting to hear back from the Irish universities, but right now all I have is an offer from St. Andrews for psychology with biology (major minor thing) and an offer from an Irish uni for medicine. In terms of the medical offer, they're asking for 6 in chem, math and bio, and the psychology offer they're asking for 6 in bio. I don't know if I can achieve a 6 in chem because I find it quite hard and I've been consistently getting 4 and 5. Now my issue is this: I don't know what to do. I know this is a bit premature considering I haven't done my exams yet, but I have no idea which path to take. I feel like both my parents are contradicting each other and I don't want to talk to my counsellor because, well, there are reasons. Does anyone have any advice? This is really stressing me out to the point where I can't focus on studying for the exams, so I just want to come to some sort of resolution. Sorry this is a bit long and rambly, but I'm really not in the best state of mind right now.
  25. I need some urgent guidance regarding my IB subject choices for next year!!! This is what I've entered; English Lit A HL Economics HL History HL Maths SL Environmental systems and societies SL Mandarin ab initio SL However, I still have the opportunity to make changes so I thought I'd ask for some thoughts on them before I finalise. First of all - do they seem optimal for law at Russel Group/Ivy Leauge unis? English Lit, Economics, Maths and Mandarin are more or less definite so I am left with two concerns; I am considering swapping out History HL to Global Politics HL. Mainly because Global Politics appeared very interesting but also as I reckon History will be much harder to get a good score in. I came to UK boarding school this year which is year 11/5th form so I am doing an accelerated GCSE course - meaning my subject choices for GCSE were limited and I couldn't do the full GCSE for History (I have history lessons for experience but am not sitting exams). On the other hand, though, I know History is well respected by unis and sure would benefit me if I'll study law. Help!!! History HL or Global Politics HL? Second concern - At first I didn't doubt choosing ESS for a second because I just wanted to get rid of the sciences but I have heard a lot recently, even from the teacher of ESS, that it is a soft subject. I got A*s in all my triple science mocks and am predicted A*s as well - so it is not that I would struggle with for example Biology; I just chose ESS purely because I don't find bio/chem/physics interesting. Is it really such a "soft subject" and does it even matter if I want to do law/international relations etc. at uni? if so should I consider biology instead?
