  1. My CAS coordinator informed us that we need to write 500 words per reflection but I took an insight to some reflections suggested by the IB and they only had a few sentences. So my question is, do I really need to have 500 words? Also, does CAS require efficient planning and acting upon that plan (such as holding a formal dinner for the school) or can it be something I learn in a day?
  2. Hi! I am a fairly new IB student. I finished Pre-IB last year, and am in second month of Grade 11 IB. We just got Managebac accounts and have been encouraged to start logging CAS, but I'm not sure how. I can find the section that needs to be filled out for different activities, but I don't know how to tag things. I volunteer twice a week, and instead of having to log each session individually --annoying my supervisor constantly with repeated notifications-- I was wondering if there was a way to log something as an ongoing activity instead...? There's probably a really simple solution, but I appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks!
  3. Hey guys! I just started the IB program last month and I am so overwhelmed by the CAS experiences. What does it mean by the learning outcomes (global engagement, commitment and teamwork? How do you achieve them? Can you guys give me some activities that are CAS experiences? It would help alot. Ada
  4. My school's CAS coordinator met with all the juniors after school this past week. He said that if we were doing a CAS activity outside of school, we had to get a letterhead paper from the activity's supervisor (Ex: doing Creativity hours by going to a piano lesson where I am being supervised by my piano teacher) describing what you did. He never specified that you needed a reflection for it. However, I've heard that you have to do a reflection on the activity, get it signed by your advisor, and you're all set. This has left me really confused. If anyone knows what to do, please tell me!
  5. Hey guys, what are your thoughts on ManageBac? Do your schools use it? In my school I only used it for CAS, but my friend's school used it for everything in the IB but he said it was pretty annoying to use... Is it any good? Do schools use other programmes instead?
  6. Hi I was planning to do a runathon myself where I ask people to give me money for each lap/km that I do. I am not very good at running so the planning part is where I improve my own running skills. The fund gathered will then be gathered to a charity that I haven't decided upon yet. There is also an app that I've found online which makes them donate money to a charity of my choice for the distance that I've ran. I want to ask if this sounds like an acceptable CAS project, if not how can I make it one or what are some other suggestions.
  7. Hello everyone, I am doing a petition to the New Zealand government to protect the hectors dolphins, a critically endangered species, native to New Zealand. This is my CAS project and my supervisor said that it would be nice if I can get 1000 signatures. PLEASE help! Thanks! It literally takes 30 seconds! https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/protect-the-nz-native-species-hectors-dolphins.html
  8. Hello, I'm kinda freaking out as I am a perfectionist who wishes to find the best way to organize my way through IB (I'm starting it in August). My HL's (Math, Physics, Psych) and my SL's (Lang & Lit, Mandarin, Econ). What supplies should I buy to best prepare for these such as binders and notebooks. (I'm already buying an accordion folder btw) Also advice for any of these topics is very much appreciated. (ex. homework load, amount of worksheets handed out, how hard the class is in general) + general tips on CAS and my EE would be amazing Thanks in advance !
  9. Hey! So I have a problem. Every year, my school selects two students to win a really prestigious award. The winners are chosen through their participation in their community as well as at school. I have okay grades, so that's not a problem (as that's also a factor to winning the award) but like, my sister won the award two years ago and so like, the pressure is on for me. My graduating class has so many amazing "contestants"... what should I do that will really make me pop out? I'm a co-chair of a club at my school and next year, I'll be the "president" of that club, I was on the students council at my school last year but not this year as I lost the election, and every summer I play an hours long music "recital" at a local seniors home. But, that's not enough. Any ideas? Thanks!
  10. So, I’m case there’s any metalheads here, I decided to share this with the community: It is a music album I made taking the instrumental part of famous metal songs and singing over them, though the main creativity part lies on the invented IB-themed lyrics. Mostly made it for fun, as I’m a terrible singer and my CAS profile was already pretty complete, but hell, it is metal and it is about the IB, there’s nothing better to focus on studying the finals! Share it with your classmates if you want to cause a good deal of laughing, some of the songs I made are really terrible (Studying till Starvation or Time to Change) while others are actually listenable (Slaves of the IB or The Final Exams) and they actually intend to tell a story most of us know, the path an IB student has to go through, the many difficulties he faces and the way he changes. I’ll be updating the descriptions with the lyrics, already put them in the first two, and would love to hear what you guys think, I really don’t care if you criticise them because I already know they’re bad, but still I’m interested to know what’s your opinion on them seeing most of the songs I’ve heard about the IB are rap, pop or other terrible genres of music... HAIL METAL \m/!
  11. When I look at my ManageBac I feel like I've nearly fulfilled all CAS requirements, but I kinda want to double-check. (I won't give the names of exactly what I'm doing tho) So I have: 1 Creativity for a little more than 2 months (Already done reflections, marked complete) 1 Activity for 6 months (In progress, reflections submitted) 1 Activity+Service for a little over 2 weeks (Already done reflections, yet to get it marked complete by supervisor) 1 Activity for 6 months (In progress, reflections submitted) 1 Creativity for more than 8 months (In progress, reflections submitted) 1 CAS project (Creativity+Service) for more than 6 months (In progress, reflections not yet submitted) 1 Creativity for 6 weeks (Already done reflections, marked complete) 1 Activity for 9 weeks (In progress, reflections not yet submitted) 1 Creativity for 8 months (Already done reflections, marked complete) 1 Service for half a month (Already done reflections, marked complete) 1 Service for a day (Already done reflections, marked complete) 1 Creativity+Service for a day (Already done reflections, marked complete) 1 Creativity for 9 months (In progress, reflections submitted) {I actually have a question about this which I will talk about at the very end**} 1 Creativity+Service for 9 months (In progress, reflections submitted) So have I fulfilled all CAS requirements so far? Do I have to include any more experiences or should I just finish these off and end my CAS? **So basically that Creativity is Model United Nations. I entered it as Creativity because at first I was a regular member, but now I've been promoted to the leadership team. I know that the leadership members are allowed to make MUN a Service aspect for their CAS- so should I change the MUN experience to Creativity+Service now or should I do it next year? (Because I'll be doing MUN next year- obviously, you become twice as motivated to do something like that when you're promoted!)
  12. please someone answer me so i can decide whether or not i should spend 30 dollars investing in this website, is it worth it? is it a good website? or am i being scammed?
  13. If I did laboratory work for a project outside school, does that count as action? It lasted 10 hours each weekend for 6 weeks, though I know that CAS is about learning outcomes and not hours anymore. For context, some other people in my school have gotten away with things like food donation drives as action
  14. I was discussing CAS with our supervisor today and she said that we can fail if we upload the activity on our Managebac after we have actually done it. This was very abrupt and today was literally the first time she has said this (I am in the second term of IB1) She just said this very casually so I am not sure how serious she was. Now I am very very worried because i tend to upload the reflections around two weeks after the activity so that I have the pictures and stuff to go along with it. This year is also the year our school is going to have examination from the IB so they can be even stricter. Is it true?
  15. Hello, I've done a cas project which began in January till may of 2016. The teacher who supervised it left the school in that time, but only wrote down 4 hours in total for the project. Is this a problem? I've done a design of the front page of the yearbook, is that enough or should I find another project?
  16. Hi! I'm starting the IB this August and I am wondering what is is like. Is it true that you won't really have a social life? I'm also doing sports 4 times a week and I'm wondering whether I can still keep that up, or if I have to drop it. Also, I was wondering what CAS is and how you would go about and complete it. I'm completely new to all of this and I know practically nothing. I'm taking these subjects: English Lang Lit HL Chemistry HL Film HL Psych SL Chinese B SL Maths SL If anyone has any experience in those subjects please let me know what they are like! Thank you so much in advance.
  17. Hi! I'm new to the IB and i'll be starting it in a few weeks. I have no idea what to expect and I've heard from a lot of people that the ib is very difficult. I'm taking: HL: English Lang and Lit A Chem Film SL: Maths Psychology Chinese B If anyone knows anything about these subjects please let me know about your experience! I was also wondering about the IA, and when you do it? Is it in your first year of IB or the second? Thank you so much!
  18. Hello! This is my first post on the forum. Basically, my friend and I organized a TEDx Conference at our school, and spent roughly 3 months organizing it, from getting speakers, setting stages and getting materials. Anyways, when we went to our CAS Supervisor he only gave us 18 hours for the event - 8 Creativity and 10 Service - for the event, saying that we made the posters and promotional material in about 2 days so 8 hours of creativity for that, and we spent about 10 hours of running around, 8 on the event day, and 2 before that so 10 hours of activity total and 0 service hours. Is he correct? It was 3 months of organization! and doesnt the CAS Guide count advocacy as service? Our Event raised some awareness regarding disabilities and sexism. Anyways, let me know if you guys think theres room to argue regarding organisation, like phone call time spent, discussion time, things like that.
  19. I'm suffering from severe social anxiety and I have to take up more meds and extra hormones to able to participate the activities. I just wanted to know how much CAS I have to do to graduate? I really wanted to have some challenges and get out of my comfort zone for awhile but it has come to a point where it is very painful.
  20. Hello people, I have ongoing activities for all three categories of CAS (learning languages for creativity, going to the gym for activity, tutoring chemistry for service). Is it enough to only do (and reflect upon) those on-going activities, or do I also need some extra CAS outside those mentioned activities? Thanks a lot.
  21. So, I decided I would try to finally win NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, for CAS this year. I love writing, and it's something I've wanted to win for a long time (about 4 years now). Needless to say, it flopped even more spectacularly than the previous three years combined. So, where did I go wrong? It possibly had something to do with the fact that I've got a lot of work all of a sudden (even if I don't really- I'm still waiting for the EE and the IAs to come crashing down on me after Christmas... >.>), and that my music started becoming much more time-consuming and serious in recent weeks, so I just haven't had time to work on it. I've been working hard for my singing, since we've got a lot of concerts and events coming up, and I've been practicing piano too (although not nearly as frequently as I should be). Or it possibly has something to do with the fact that I was side-tracked by one Mr. Otto von Bismarck over there (I'm looking at you, A.J.P Taylor!). History HL anyone? I love it, but it also caused me to start a new story halfway through the month, and those of you who know about NaNo know that that really doesn't help with the word count. I decided to rebel and count the two stories for NaNo, since I threw the NaNo rulebook out the window a few years ago anyway. Nothing has worked for me this year (I blame IB for that, mostly. >.>), but I decided to enjoy it anyways, since next year I probably won't have time for it, between EE, IAs, and college applications. So, have any of you got NaNo stories to share? I'd love to hear them.
  22. So I'm just starting off the IB and am kind of stumped on how to write a profile, seeing as writing about myself isn't one of my strengths, welp. Anyone got any tips on what I should include while trying to write it? Anything is appreciated!
  23. Here's someone's CAS blog I found, might be worth taking a peek if you're unsure of what to do. our-horizons.simplesite.com
  24. (sorry if this is in the wrong sub-forum) Are we allowed to write our CAS reflections by making our own websites? I plan to do web development for creativity, and thought it would be a good idea to have my reflection on a website that I make. Thank you!
