  1. I have 3 long questions.... I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP If I get 14 in my Chemistry SL IA, How well should I do in the exam to get a 7 in Chem???? (I know I should get all 7 in 3 papers, thats not my question. My question is how high should I get within the 7 range) Also, my Econ teacher is not a real econ teacher (sounds weird but its true). She was actually a 4 years Bussiness&Management teacher. But 2 years ago, our real Econ teacher had an incident so he had to go back to his country(England). SO basically, she taught us Econ for 2 years.(ofcourse, she didn't teach anything,, basically it was studying on our own) Because of that, in a econ class, we only have 5 people. I thought I was screwed But I SOMEHOW managed to understand whole thing by myself and actually think I did no less than 6 in the exam. (like honestly my predicted grade from my classmates and teachers is 7 and my gpa in econ is A+(99.2/100)) BUT HERE IS THE FREAKING PLOT TWIST. MY ECON TEACHER, GAVE ME A GOD DANG 28/45 in my FREAKIN IA!!! (SHE SAID SHE"S AFRAID OF GETTING MODERATED DOWN AND HARM HER CAREER....) SHE DIDN"T EVEN ASSESSED IT PROPERLY. SHE GRADED 15 IA's (3 per person) in like 1 hour!!!!! I asked alumnis, I asked other economics IB moderators, I asked econ private tutor. I showed them all my IA. THEY ALL SAID MINE IS NO LESS THAN 37/45 (ESPECIALLY MY MACRO IA IS NEAR PERFECT) So my question is, IF MY IA is really a quality work that deserve 37/45, will they grade like 9 points up??? I mean we only have 5 students so all of our IA went to IB and I think it;ll get moderated individually(correct me if Im wrong). I am legit so scared if my IA will remain 28/45 with no reason... (Because I've never seen a moderation of 9 points increase or something) LAST LAST Question I had 3 EE supervisor. (Yeah, you saw that correctly. Our school is terrible). I chose English B as my EE subject. My first supervisor only stayed for first 3 months. He got fired from a school (He had an affair with alumni...) So substitue supervisor was given by school (I had no choice), it was English A Lit teacher (She was the best supervisor and I wished school let me finish EE with her...) But substitute supervisor only stayed for like 6 months. Because school found and hired a new English B teacher. But here is where all the trouble starts. This new teacher, is NOT A IB TEACHER. She taught English in Japan's Public school. She does not fully aware of whole IB system. So I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO WRITE EE ALL BY MYSELF. BUT WHEN I SHOWED MY FINAL WORK TO ENGLISH A LIT TEACHER, (SHE TAUGHT IB FOR 11 YEARS), SHE SAID IF IT WAS FOR ENGLISH A, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN 22/34, BUT SINCE ITS ENGLISH B, SHE SAID NO LESS THAN 25/34 AND POSSIBLE 27/34 IF LUCKY. BUT THIS NEW SUPERVISOR WHO HAS 4 MONTHS OF IB CAREER GAVE ME A PREDICT OF 16/34!!!!! (WHY IS MY SCHOOL LIKE THIS) MY Question is , when EE moderators grades it, does this predict grade affect their moderation????? Sorry guys I have 3 long questions. But I really need your help. My school is arguably the worst school in Malaysia..... Please help me!!!
  2. I am not sure what I can do my chem ia but I was hoping to do something in relation to medicine if its possible. Do you guys have any ideas of something that I could do? I really need the help.
  3. Hello, I'm currently in year 1 of IB and I'm contemplating whether I should drop Chemistry HL to Chemistry SL. Also, I would like to know whether or not I'm required to take it at HL if I want to study undergrad bio in Canada or the US. Reasons why I want to drop: - Bad grades 4s and 5s sometimes 3s - I'm only doing it to strengthen my application - The Chem SL teacher is better - I love English literature My current subjects are: Chem HL, Bio HL, Business HL, English Lit SL, Math SL, Arabic Ab inito If I drop to Chem SL: English A Lit HL, Bio HL, Business HL, Chemistry SL, Math SL, Arabic Ab inito I've been thinking about this for the past three weeks and I'd appreciate much-needed advice!!!! Thank you!
  4. I’m trying to decide the subjects to pick for my IB studies next year. Biology and chemistry hl have already been decided as I’m trying to get into medicine. My current placeholder of a choice is studying psychology hl, maths sl, and language A lang and lit, and ab initio Arabic (on top of bio and chem hl). I honestly don’t know if it’s a good idea to study three sciences (yes, I’m counting psychology) at hl! I didn’t get to study psychology during my middle years as my school didn’t offer the subject, but I’m really interested in the subject. Am I setting myself up for misery and anxiety ridden nights before and after the exams or is the combination that I’ve currently chosen feasible enough? And by the way, does an ab initio second language count as an SL subject and bear the same grading weights or am I supposed to study an extra subject??
  5. I feel so conflicted right now because I don't know what to choose for my EE and I wanted to finalize my topic over a week ago! PLEASE HELP ! I wanted to do chemistry since it is something I plan to major in, so I came up with the question "To what extent does silverskin black garlic provide a reliable source of antioxidants ?" I thought it was a good topic, but the question is more biology, and unfortunately, I am not taking biology. I asked my chemistry teacher for some advice and he said that there was a reason no year 2s did chemistry as their subject. He said it would be too much work for an experiment since there would be a lot of error and it would be hard to write 4000 words on a topic that you do not know very well about. A lot of year 2 students agreed with him and recommended that I do english or history since it would be wayy easier. I really wanted to do this topic since I know I would be way more interested in it but now I feel like it would be harder than I imagine. Another teacher said chemistry is doable but difficult; however if done well it can look very good. I don't know exactly what do to for english or history. For history I am interested in Lenin, Mussolini, Hitler, and Mao But I am lost in what I should do. Please help me. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
  6. Hello everyone, I am currently searching for a topic for my Extended Essay in Chemistry and I am completely lost... I want to study medicine in the future and so I was hoping to find a topic that could be related in a way to that field. Does anyone has an idea or wants to share what was his/her topic for a Chemistry EE? Thank you very much
  7. Hi everyone, I was planning to do my extended essay in chemistry and came up with a topic. I haven't framed the research question yet, but my topic is about UV and sunscreens. So I was thinking about finding 1 or 2 chemicals in 2 different sunscreens and comparing their effect on blocking harmful UV (UVA and UVB). I also plan to determine which substance is more effective at blocking harmful UV rays. Is this topic okay? I wasn't sure whether it completely fits in the extended essay topic category. I've been having lots of trouble finding a good topic. Thanks for your help.
  8. Hi all, I just wanted to know how difficult it's going to be for me to study and succeed in IB. I'm currently studying in grade 10 and I'll most probably start studying according to IB's curriculum next year. I'm currently studying the Holt McDougal Modern Chemistry, English Literature/writing, Biology, and Phyiscs. The McGraw Hill Algebra 2 on top of social studies, Farsi literature/writing and Arabic. I find all of the subjects I'm studying relatively easy (except Farsi. Even though it's my mother language), and I aced all of my finals last term. But I'm kinda stressed to be studying IB as I have no idea about the difficulty level. The hl subjects that I'm gonna pick are biology, chemistry, Farsi and English (I have no idea whether it's gonna be A or B; it's mandatory to study Farsi and English hl at my school) I want to study medicine and I looked at dozens of university admission requirements for the said course; most of the universities I'm interested in require a minimum of 6 in bio hl and chem hl on top of an overall score of 38/45. As I said, I just want to know how much energy I'll need to exert on my studies and how difficult it'll be to meet the mentioned requirements. Your insight would be appreciated! Edit: Do I need to study physics as wrll to get into medicine? I'm already picking Math sl so not sure how that'll work.
  9. Hi...I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I know I'm going to be studying sciences in university, but I'm not exactly sure what type of science I'm getting into. It's a bit stressful because I have my own preferences, while my parents' disagreement with these preferences make me scared to the bone. I know I want to take Chemistry at Higher Level, but my problem is between biology and physics (+ computer science, but I'd rather NOT get into that.) at HL. You see, I'm studying MYP right now and so far I really enjoy Biology and find it very interesting. As discussed with my careers counsellor, I could take my bachelor in Bio OR Chem and then take my Masters in Biochemistry, which I thought was a great idea because it is two subjects I enjoy (to a certain extent, but I'd also rather NOT get into that). My parents don't think that's a great idea though. My dad says I'm limiting myself wayyyyyyyyy too much (like a mouse hole kind of too much) if I delve straight into my masters after my bachelor. Sure, I get that. Maybe I'll work with my bachelor in Chem for a while. But that's also very limiting, apparently, and my only option is to take Chemistry and Physics/Computer science to get a bachelor in engineering. Except I dread Physics/ I'm not-so-great at it. And I've heard it's a death wish to take it at HL if I'm not ready to put in the effort or enjoy it to the fullest. News Flash: I'm not! (As for computer science, well, I'm not very sure because I've never studied it, but I'd assume I wouldn't be fascinated by the unduly amount of numbers and problem solving that seems to give high-paying jobs all around). The thing is, I'm not going to get into medicine. Not a doctor or radiologist or pharmacist. And Biology is practically a dead end to my parents, very shameful, if I don't want to be a doctor (which, I repeat, I DO NOT). I'm trying to cooperate with my parents by going into sciences (trust me, it's not my first choice), but I'd like to at least do something I like (to some certain extent). However, it seems like unless I get into computer science or Physics (engineering, really, is assumed to be the only job that'll get you some bucks here), I won't be successful. I've been told it's best to cry now and not later, but I'm not sure if that's necessarily true. I think if I take Physics and end up being an engineer I'll be crying 'til the rest of my days. But, at the same time, why should I trust myself? I'm a kid and puberty and hormones and total ignorance makes me rethink my choices in taking Chemistry and Biology at HL. Should I just take Physics and Chemistry and cry in a Ferrari? Sorry for the rambling. I appreciate any and all responses.
  10. Hello guys, I am due to submit my extended essay and I have given my subject choice as chem+bio, but I cannot come up with any good extended essay topic. I want to do something related to medicine. Any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
  11. I am calculating for the vitamin C concentration of different fruits and using the formula = Molar mass of vitamin c x concentration of DCPIP x volume of DCPIP used. I am confused on how to search for the uncertainty value. Can someone please help me???? Thank you very much!
  12. Hey guys! I have a general idea on the topic I'm about to do, but I'm unsure of how to construct the question. Basically, silica gel can be dried and reused once it has maxed out its adsorption of moisture, but I'm not sure how I can phrase that into a question. So far, I've thought of something along the lines of 'does the effectiveness of moisture adsorption of silica gel decrease after complete regeneration of the gel?' Thank you!!
  13. So my chem SL IA is on the effect of sulfate concentration on foam stability of shampoos. I don't know if this is a stupid question but I'm wondering if it's even possible to compare my results to anything in the literature considering my topic. If it doesn't make sense to compare your results to the literature is it necessary?
  14. Hi, For my Chemistry IA, I want to compare the activation energy of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalayzed by potassium iodide (KI) versus the activation energy of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by a solution of catalase enzyme, to determine which one is the more efficient catalyst (i.e. the one that yields a lower activation energy for the reaction). For both catalyzed reactions, I'm going to measure the volume of oxygen gas evolved per second using a gas syringe, at 5 different temperatures (30°C, 35°C, 40°C, 45°C and 50°C). Then, I'm going to create an Arrhenius plot for each catalyzed reaction, and determine the activation energy from the plot. There are a few things that I'm confused about: 1. How do I determine the appropriate concentrations and volumes for each chemical? 2. How do I calculate the rate constant based on the data I collect? (In order to create the Arrhenius plot, I would need to plot ln(rate constant) on the y-axis and 1/Temperature on the x-axis). Alternatively, I found an article that says that I can simply plot ln(initial rate) over 1/Temperature. (https://eic.rsc.org/feature/investigating-activation-energies/2020172.article) This article says the following: The variation of reaction rate with temperature is given by the Arrhenius equation, which in its integrated form is: k = Ae-Ea /RT where A is a constant, the frequency factor, Ea is the activation energy, R is the universal gas constant (8.314 J mol-1K-1), and T is the absolute temperature. Since initial rate = ck, the initial rate can be found by: initial rate = cAe-Ea /RT Taking logarithms: ln (initial rate) = lncA - Ea/RT or log (initial rate) = logcA - Ea/2.303RT Thus, we can plot log (initial rate) against 1/T to obtain a straight line. The slope is multiplied by -2.303R to get Ea. The rates can be expressed in volume of oxygen per second or in arbitrary units because the slope of the straight line will not be affected. Would this work as well? I figure it would be easier to plot ln(initial rate), because then I wouldn't need to calculate the values for the rate constant at each temperature.
  15. I just submitted my EE to the IB. Although I know that this is absolute unless acted on by my coordinator, I am unsure of something and fear my EE could become invalidated. My EE focused on one piece of radioactive material, Strontium-90, which is alpha radiation. What I investigated was how the atomic structure of this radiation leads to its ability to penetrate paper and metals. This was approved by the EE supervisor and my mentor as well. Months went by as I completed the research and the experiment, and ultimately, the essay. Just yesterday my mentor informed me of something that was in the Subject Specific guidelines that was troubling, "radioactive materials are strictly prohibited." These guidelines were not given to anyone in my class until mid-November, past the date where we submitted our topics to the IB, thus leaving no time to think of a new question, how to investigate, research, and perform the experiment. At that point, I would have switched over to an EE that is easier to receive a passing mark in; something in English or History. Overall, I fear my EE may become invalidated and receive an E, thus stripping away any chance at the Diploma. Now I wonder if there is anything I can do as a candidate to help my case. Disclaimer: The radiation used could not pose a threat to myself or my mentor unless the source of radiation was ingested. Protective gear was worn at all times, and I had my mentors guidance at all times while performing the experiment. The radiation was also very weak and could not even penetrate the skin.
  16. Hi, I'm a sophomore and I'm currently choosing my IB subjects (and it's stressful haha)! I won't be pursuing a career in math or science because I want to major in languages thanks to my international background (and it tends to be easier for me most times). I was originally planning on IB Chemistry SL, but some research has told me that IB Physics SL may be a better option (lower grade boundaries?); I would appreciate any advice that you can give me regarding which one is easier and what the characteristics of those subjects are. Our teachers seem to be okay in both subjects, so that's not a big factor. Here are my (almost) final subjects: English A Lit HL Math HL Psychology HL Chem/Physics SL French B SL Spanish B SL (Spanish in Ab Initio) I am taking math because I enjoy the challenge and the subject itself (despite not wanting a career); I'd say I'm good in our current class, which is known as the prerequisite for Math HL in our school. I take chemistry now but I don't take physics (that's apparently not a problem). I enjoy the mathematical parts of chemistry, but I sometimes find the theory hard to understand when it goes deeper. I don't like memorizing, but the amount that chemistry requires hasn't bothered me much. My main concerns are: Chem? High grade boundaries, labs, unable to grasp theory Physics? It's notorious for being difficult, but that's in HL so.. Same here, I'm worried about not getting the theory, mainly. Thank you for your help
  17. hello!!! does anyone know if the bibliography page of the chemistry ia counts for the page number (which is maximum 12)?
  18. Hi everyone, I found a topic for my chemistry extended essay, but I'm not sure whether it is suitable. It is about conjugate structures in sunscreens and how effective they are from blocking UV-A and UV-B rays from the skin. Is this topic suitable? My teachers said that it is a pretty common topic. Does anyone have any other chemistry extended essay topic? Thank you for your help
  19. Hi! I have been searching many hours to come up with a chemistry topic for my extended essay but I find it extremly hard to find a topic and a research question. Now I am starting to run out of time as I ideally should have decided my topic by tomorrow. I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations on were to find inspiration or ideas for sutiable investigations (I am doing an experimental based essay). If anyone who has written their extended essay in chemistry could tell me how they came up with their topic and the thought process behind it, it would be extremly helpfull!!
  20. For my chemistry experiment, I decided to find the effect of temperature on the equilibrium constant of the reaction between Fe(NO3)2-and AgNO2- using KSCN to Titrate the equilibrium mixture. My concern is will this method give me sufficient results for the aim of my investigation? Also, I haven't found any applications for this reaction. Please let me know if there are any. thanks
  21. So I have to choose my Extended Essay topic this week and I'm not sure how to go about it. My teacher advised us to choose something that is related to what we want ot do in the future and I want to go into the architecture stream. However, I'm not taking Visual Art or History and have NO IDEA how to get a topic idea now. I'm taking Physics HL, so I might be able to do a lab about the stability of building but I wanted to do something like that for my IA. Other subjects - Chem HL, Math HL, English Lit and Lang HL, Business SL, French SL
  22. Hi, I started doing my chemistry IA on the effect of temperature on buffering capacity. I added a pH 7 buffer to distilled water and titrated it with NaOH. I then measured the amount of NaOH taken to increase the pH of the water by a unit of 1. I tried this for temperatures between 5 and 80 degrees but there was no significant difference between the data obtained. This there any notable fault in my methodology? I have to finish gathering data for my IA within one week. Since I was going to discuss the effect of temperature on the equilibria of the buffer solution, I am in the process of finding another IA experiment in the same subject area. If you have any suitable ideas or any improvements for my previous method, please let me know. Thank you
  23. Hi, I am currently an MYP student and the time to choose my subjects for next year is coming up so I just wanted some advice on what people thought of my choices and whether I'm biting off more than I can chew. For background knowledge about my subject choices, I'm aiming to get into a CS college. HL - Math, Physics, Computer Science SL - English, Spanish, ESS I know that chemistry is traditionally a subject for CS but I'm personally very bad with the subject and I've heard that HL and SL chem are quite difficult, and considering the fact that my HL's are already quite rigorous on their own, I wasn't sure if it was the best idea to add chem to the workload. I'm also not really sure about ESS yet, I want to take either ESS or a humanities subject that won't be as demanding as some of the other options. So I'm just wondering whether my subject choices are cohesive and whether I should be taking chem or maybe switching out ESS for a humanities subject? Thanks for reading.
  24. Hello, I'm searching for two students, which are full of motivation that would like to form a team and participate in a competition together. The theme I really want to work on is air pollution analysis. I think this is a great opportunity to try yourself in a different field, gain new cooperation skills and of course have something to write in your personal statement. (Ha ha ha we are all worrying about that last point, aren't we?) I hope someone will return my call! Have a nice day! Note: All three students have to be from different countries and from the European Union between 15 and 19 years old. You can find more information about this competition here: https://olcms.stem4youth.pl/competition/
  25. Is there anyone here who is good at doing ANOVA? If so please PM me because I really dont know if ive done it right in my biology and chemistry ia's! General feedback on my ia's would also be nice
