  1. Since Literature and Performance is hardly recognized and I knew no one would start a forum on it, I decided to do it myself To all the Literature and Performance kids out there, How did you find that exam???
  2. Which books are you reading/did you read for your Literature course? (English or other languages) Which one was your favorite?
  3. Hi, I need to write a written assignment for the external assessment which is the 1500 word literary essay on a work studied in part1. I'm writing my essay on Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman. My guiding question for the essay is "How does Dorfman create conflict between Paulina & Gerardo through the use of dramatic dialogue and how is it resolved?" I plan to constrain it to act 1 scene 1 while linking it to other parts of the play. Do you think that this is an appropriate topic? And I'm not sure about the structure of the essay. What do I start writing with? Please help ASAP!! Thanks
  4. I made the stupid decision of writing my EE on a subject which my school doesn't offer, and regret it... but whatever! I'd love it if somebody who takes the course or goes to a school that offers it could help me out by sending me some kind of study guide, curriculum, a sample essay of any kind or even putting me in contact with somebody would help-- I'm just looking to better understand the subject and hopefully find someone that can give me some tips or even read my essay! Thank you so much guys!!
  5. This is an internally assessed essay I wrote on nature imagery in Macbeth in 2018 during my Year 1 English Lit course.
  6. This is a practice commentary I wrote for an in-class evaluation (internally assessed) on the book The Picture of Dorian Gray.
  7. I need help deciding on a topic for my English IOP. I've decided on doing a just a slideshow presentation, so it needs to be really good. The only topic I've thought up of is name symbolism, but that's a really popular topic. Any ideas?
  8. So I started off with choosing The Civil Rights Movement as my topic for the Extended Essay but then I was told not to pick a topic that's so common, because the markers usually get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. And also, if you're going to do a topic that's so well known, it has to be exceptional. So I was hoping if you guys could please put some suggestions that I could focus on that has a sufficient information for me to able to conduct the essay. Thank you! x
  9. I’m trying to decide the subjects to pick for my IB studies next year. Biology and chemistry hl have already been decided as I’m trying to get into medicine. My current placeholder of a choice is studying psychology hl, maths sl, and language A lang and lit, and ab initio Arabic (on top of bio and chem hl). I honestly don’t know if it’s a good idea to study three sciences (yes, I’m counting psychology) at hl! I didn’t get to study psychology during my middle years as my school didn’t offer the subject, but I’m really interested in the subject. Am I setting myself up for misery and anxiety ridden nights before and after the exams or is the combination that I’ve currently chosen feasible enough? And by the way, does an ab initio second language count as an SL subject and bear the same grading weights or am I supposed to study an extra subject??
  10. I have really decided my topic of my English B EE to be metaphors in The Fault In Our Stars since it's deeply moving and unique in rhetorical strategies. But in this forum, I saw many past discussions about John Green's books that they are not classical and it might be risky to write my EE on this topic. My optimal career choice for the future is material science/ optics and electrical engineering, but I don't have enough resources to conduct a research to finish my EE on natural sciences. I have another choice, which is on analyzing the oligopoly in airlines competitions(extent of collusion, the role of government and state owned airlines, price discrimination, etc.), but I am a Eco SL student who just entered two extra HL classes per week. The truth is SL Eco does not cover any section of oligopoly, so I have to study an extra bit of work. Give me some suggestions on whether I should write English B EE or Economics EE, thanks!
  11. Hi! I'm considering looking at The Trial by Kafka and 1984 by Orwell in terms of the nature of authority, the position of the individual in society and the methods the people in authority use to maintain power. Do you think this is a good choice for my EE? I haven't come up with a research question yet but something to do with society vs. the individual? I realize that these books are somewhat overdone in the IB but this is what I'm most interested in doing and I am going to refine my research question into something that hasn't previously been done. Thanks!
  12. This is a sentence from my EE and I really don't know if it sounds good, especially the red part I highlighted. Would be really grateful if you could tell me please what you think! "Eight decades apart, the books have never been compared, although plenty of interesting connections can be made between them and the context of feminism. Thus the following research question arises [...]"
  13. Hi, I want to switch my subjects but I'm already on the 2nd semester of 11th grade. My courses are; Turkish HL, English HL, Visual Arts HL, History SL, Physics SL and Math SL. I want to switch Turkish HL to either Math HL or Physics HL. The reason why I want to do it is because the teacher is cancer. I don't want to tell the details but just know that she's not a good teacher... Also I don't like literature and stuff. Is it possible to switch? Would it worth? The course I want to study in university is nothing related to Turkish. I'm very regretful about this situation.
  14. So for my extended essay, I wanted to write about anime because it is the only thing that interests me. Due to my love for books,as well, i decided to do a Literature EE, however I am not quite sure what category my EE falls under. I want to make sure my EE actually fits under a category before I get too invested in it. I am planning to compare a potrayal of a society in a novel with a society in an anime. Because the anime is well not a literacy work I couldn't figure it out by reading the extended essay guide and the teachers at my school aren't so sure. Please help me out it would be appreciated. Thank you.
  15. Hi, I'm currently in year 12 (second year ib) and writing my final EE essay. I'm having some troubling not straying from the topic too far since I've only one main point and a only few subpoints (which are slightly weak since they focus more on the morals that the novel targets but not exactly the structure or language). My topic is: How does the letter structure of The White Tiger reflect the purpose of the novel and thus the reader's understanding and intepretation of Balram's actions? And my question is what are some other aspects I should explore to make sure I have enough content while at the same time not straying from the topic, and how the epistolary structure contributes to the White Tiger's theme of individuality.
  16. So my supervisor and I have settled on a topic for my extended essay. I haven't quite formulated a knowledge question yet for this, but I have a rough idea as to where I might want to go. My topic is exploring the societal trend of diverse casting in the entertainment world (Novels, theater, film, etc.). I would be using written books, some scripts, articles, etc. as my evidences and sources for expanding into my topic. But my supervisor and I also want to include visual references, like recordings of plays and musicals or looking at films. My school's IB Coordinator was iffy on this when I asked her for the OK on looking at video, she says it feels too much like IB Film(which my school does not yet have), but she said that she and I should both do research to verify this. So basically I was denied use of video sources until we found something that said it was okay. I have read through the 2015 English essay reports and it said nothing of specific to my issue, then I looked through ibo.org and so far I have come up empty. Does anyone here know whether or not I can do this for my research? Or should I search for a new topic that doesn't involve film? OR if anyone knows a better source where I could find the answer? Thank you!
  17. Context: I’m writing my EE in Japanese. How much literature do we have to study? Does it have to be a comparison? Has anyone out there done a language b EE and can you talk to me?
  18. For the extended essay, could anyone clarify the limitations of what books I could possibly use? I know a lot of it depends on how well I do with analyzing and stuff, but I feel like I have a lot of ideas for comparisons that wouldn't actually do well once I write them. Here are some of my possible topics, and they are all over the place because I feel like I can't get a good grasp of what direction I can go in, so I've considered just about every book I've ever read and tried to compare it. Could you tell me just if any of my topics are actually appropriate and something I can work with or if they are all stretching too far? The theme of female oppression/gender codes in The Story of an Hour (Kate Chopin) and Madame Bovary Magical Realism in A Wild Sheep Chase and James and the Giant Peach Themes of alienation and existentialism in Frankenstein and Notes From the Underground The meaning of being human in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Frankenstein Also, how hard would it be to write my ee on either one novel, or several novels by the same author? Is it much harder than a comparison?
  19. Hi everyone! Ok so, my original Extended Essay research question was "How are the common themes of betrayal and love portrayed differently in the Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” when compared to the tragedy “King Lear.” However, my adviser said that it was too narrow for an EE and I should compare two different playwrights instead. I'm not really interested in going outside of Shakespeare, so I have decided to completely change my topic. I'm still sticking to English Literature, but I think I'm leaning towards novels instead. This is where I need help. I really want to do something with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" since it's a beautiful book, relates to me personally, and I haven't seen it used in any Extended Essays so far. Besides that, I don't really know which direction I should go in. A little guidance or some suggestions would be helpful and much appreciated. Also, if my original topic could be somehow be salvaged, I'd be incredibly grateful for that. Thank you so much! Update: I did some research and I'm considering maybe comparing "A Thousand Splendid Suns" with "The Bastard of Istanbul." Lemme know what you think! Thanks!
  20. Can anyone help me with a suggestion on a good book for category one, and any works that would compare well with it? Please help me.
  21. I have been struggling in starting my EE lately. I would like to not that writing an extended essay in english language wasn't my first choice, but seeing that one in mathematics or physics is going to be 10x harder I chose English. Don't get me wrong, I love reading and writing, if I didn't I wouldn't have chosen it. Alright. My question is : Is fantasy a good genre to write about in an EE? I've seen successful essays on Lord of the Rings for example, and I am considering the trilogy as an option for my EE, but is fantasy as a genre a viable option? It is safe to say that the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George RR Martin is on the top of my list if I were to write about fantasy, so this gets us to my second part of the question, is A Song of Ice and Fire good to write about? I am perfectly focusing on serious literary analysis/criticism, maybe putting one of the ASOIAF books in comparison with one of the LotR books, but not to jump to far away, can anyone help me in my struggle? Would be greatly appreciated as the idea has been growing on me lately since I saw many good aspects of the books and many people composing good research question about this series.
  22. Helloo!! Could anyone help with an interview template (from trusted sources)? I need it for my WT1..pleaseeee
  23. Hello everyone!! As I know WT1 for English A is supposed to be a creative writing, not an essay. Anyway, I was wondering if I could do an interview essay instead of a simple interview. Does any of you know if that's allowed?
  24. Our school is finalizing our written assignments for the IB, and we had written our reflective statements reflecting on one of the interactive orals seen that semester. However, one teacher has just notified us that we messed up, and we were supposed to reflect on TWO IO's in the reflective statement. I had not seen or heard of this anywhere, and there's another teacher at our school who doesn't think that's true. Regardless, the former teacher still holds his view that it's supposed to be reflecting on two. I really don't want to redo mine, since I only reflected on one. I'm at 389 words and can't add much more (400 max). Can anyone help clarify this issue? Thanks in advance!
  25. Is it too late to switch from literature to Lang and lit in December of IB year 1? i mean couldn't I catch up over December break? ??? I need advice
