  1. What's the difference between the Normal Force and Newton's Third Law of Motion? Because they sound pretty similar.
  2. Iā€™m a matric student going into IB and Iā€™m taking economics, business management, physics and math and I have no strong base on any of the subjects. But I am willing to do watever it takes to get above 35 in IB
  3. Hey guys! How are you? I would like your suggestion on the option that I should choose for my paper 3 Physics HL. I wanted to take relativity, but my teacher is strongly recommending imaging. Please put your suggestions below. The options are: A: Relativity B: Engineering Physics C: Imaging Astrophysics Thank You. All the best for your exams. šŸ˜„
  4. I want to do my IA on cantilevers using a wooden ruler (I know, overdone) but I'm having trouble formulating an actual question. I already know what variables I want to change, would my research topic just be something like, "the factors that effect the period of a cantilever" or something like that? Also, is there a way for me to make this appropriate for HL? Or if I want to do HL, should I do my IA on another topic entirely?
  5. I've had a really hard time choosing a topic. I'm interested in a lot of different subjects, and one doesn't really stick out. We had a deadline to choose a topic, but we can change it. Right now I'm planning on doing mine in psychology, researching how second language acquisition affects child development, specifically within education and brain/language development. The problem is, my school does not offer a psychology course, and I've heard that if you haven't taken the class, you shouldn't write an essay in that area. I'm also interested in Environmental Systems and Societies, but my school also doesn't offer that class. I have taken the AP environmental science class. However, I couldn't come up with a good topic to explore in that area. My favorite DP class right now is physics, and I would be ok with doing an essay in that subject, but haven't found an idea I'm really interested in. Maybe something to do with soccer (I play)? I really need to come up with a solid plan soon. My rough draft is due in September, but I have the EE cafe in May. I would really appreciate any ideas or advice you guys have!! Thanks!!šŸ˜Š
  6. Hi everyone, I am currently planning for my IA and the RQ is about the effect depth of water on the road and weight of a car have on dynamic friction. Is this topic worth investigating (I of course don't know the answer to my RQ)? Or should I find a better real life situation to connect it to? Thanks a lot!
  7. This lab has been submitted and graded by IBO. It received a perfect score in all categories. Research Question: How does changing the angle of incidence of light affect the power output of a solar panel? Includes calculations, graphs, steps to linearize data, and a conclusion to an inconclusive lab. Good example for when you don't get your predicted results from the lab.
  8. so tomorrow I have test in physics, and I suck at physics in general. Do you maybe have easy ways how to remember formulas etc. of "energy and energy production"? if you do, can you maybe give in what you have?
  9. Hi...I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I know I'm going to be studying sciences in university, but I'm not exactly sure what type of science I'm getting into. It's a bit stressful because I have my own preferences, while my parents' disagreement with these preferences make me scared to the bone. I know I want to take Chemistry at Higher Level, but my problem is between biology and physics (+ computer science, but I'd rather NOT get into that.) at HL. You see, I'm studying MYP right now and so far I really enjoy Biology and find it very interesting. As discussed with my careers counsellor, I could take my bachelor in Bio OR Chem and then take my Masters in Biochemistry, which I thought was a great idea because it is two subjects I enjoy (to a certain extent, but I'd also rather NOT get into that). My parents don't think that's a great idea though. My dad says I'm limiting myself wayyyyyyyyy too much (like a mouse hole kind of too much) if I delve straight into my masters after my bachelor. Sure, I get that. Maybe I'll work with my bachelor in Chem for a while. But that's also very limiting, apparently, and my only option is to take Chemistry and Physics/Computer science to get a bachelor in engineering. Except I dread Physics/ I'm not-so-great at it. And I've heard it's a death wish to take it at HL if I'm not ready to put in the effort or enjoy it to the fullest. News Flash: I'm not! (As for computer science, well, I'm not very sure because I've never studied it, but I'd assume I wouldn't be fascinated by the unduly amount of numbers and problem solving that seems to give high-paying jobs all around). The thing is, I'm not going to get into medicine. Not a doctor or radiologist or pharmacist. And Biology is practically a dead end to my parents, very shameful, if I don't want to be a doctor (which, I repeat, I DO NOT). I'm trying to cooperate with my parents by going into sciences (trust me, it's not my first choice), but I'd like to at least do something I like (to some certain extent). However, it seems like unless I get into computer science or Physics (engineering, really, is assumed to be the only job that'll get you some bucks here), I won't be successful. I've been told it's best to cry now and not later, but I'm not sure if that's necessarily true. I think if I take Physics and end up being an engineer I'll be crying 'til the rest of my days. But, at the same time, why should I trust myself? I'm a kid and puberty and hormones and total ignorance makes me rethink my choices in taking Chemistry and Biology at HL. Should I just take Physics and Chemistry and cry in a Ferrari? Sorry for the rambling. I appreciate any and all responses.
  10. Hey so for my extended essay in physics i came up with this topic: "The optimum conditions required to create the most efficient waterwheel". I was wondering if this was too vague or if it has too many things consider. Please tell me what you think
  11. I have the exams in 1 month and did not start studying yet. I am extremely scared about the exams and dont believe i have sufficient time to study for them properly. I do math hl and physics hl and still did not revise anything. I believe i will fail the exams or get really low grades. I may be dramatic but i dont know what to do. Do i have time? How can i do this?
  12. Hey guys! I am doing my extended essay in physics, and I want to do it on how the speed of a soccer ball affect its projectile motion for this experiment I will have to keep a constant speed while I kick the soccer ball. How do I keep a constant speed? Also, does doing experiments on simulation affect our grades? It would be great if you could help me out. Thanks in advance. P.S. please reply ASAP!
  13. Hello guys, I have taken Extended Essay in Physics which is my HL subject, I was thinking of doing it on the Projectile motion in soccer. Is it a good topic? What experiment can I do in it?
  14. please someone answer me so i can decide whether or not i should spend 30 dollars investing in this website, is it worth it? is it a good website? or am i being scammed?
  15. Hello everyone, I am planning on taking the IB Physics Exam next year, the only trouble is that there is only AP physics in my school. I have already talked with my IB coordinator and we have figured out how the Internal Assessment will be graded next school year. I have some sites and channels that might be able to teach me most of the content, yet I doubt that I will be able to find all I need. Can any of you recommend me what should I do, and sites and/or videos to learn and hopefully pass the exams next year?
  16. How do I make sure I get into Cambridge? Even if I don't get the required grades?
  17. So for my group 4 project I need to do it on curling and more specifically the physics of curling. Does anyone have an EASY idea for me? Please?
  18. Hi, I'm a sophomore and I'm currently choosing my IB subjects (and it's stressful haha)! I won't be pursuing a career in math or science because I want to major in languages thanks to my international background (and it tends to be easier for me most times). I was originally planning on IB Chemistry SL, but some research has told me that IB Physics SL may be a better option (lower grade boundaries?); I would appreciate any advice that you can give me regarding which one is easier and what the characteristics of those subjects are. Our teachers seem to be okay in both subjects, so that's not a big factor. Here are my (almost) final subjects: English A Lit HL Math HL Psychology HL Chem/Physics SL French B SL Spanish B SL (Spanish in Ab Initio) I am taking math because I enjoy the challenge and the subject itself (despite not wanting a career); I'd say I'm good in our current class, which is known as the prerequisite for Math HL in our school. I take chemistry now but I don't take physics (that's apparently not a problem). I enjoy the mathematical parts of chemistry, but I sometimes find the theory hard to understand when it goes deeper. I don't like memorizing, but the amount that chemistry requires hasn't bothered me much. My main concerns are: Chem? High grade boundaries, labs, unable to grasp theory Physics? It's notorious for being difficult, but that's in HL so.. Same here, I'm worried about not getting the theory, mainly. Thank you for your help
  19. Hi everyone. I am working with string-coupled pendulums, as I am dealing with the relationship of two pendulum, I am becoming increasingly frustrated that that I have not been able to linearize anything - they are sin/cos graphs and it's just so frustrating. Why are we required to produce linear graphs? Why can't I just compare the theoretical equation for the displacement of a pendulum, with the equation obtained from graphing my results? I could compare multiple aspects to get indicators of systematic errors, random errors are just the spread from the sine wave, and as for uncertainties, I can use trigonometric identities. I am so so frustrated. DO WE NEED LINEAR GRAPHS and will I lose marks from not producing one?
  20. Currently, my teacher has approved of my IA idea to investigate factors that affect the lift of a model airplane / helicopter. I can change any variable of my choice. However, as I looked into the topic I realised that I could not think of an appropriate method of testing. My original plan was to place the mode onto a scale ; for a helicopter to hover, the force exerted by the rotor blade on the air must be equal to the weight of the helicopter. (Newton's Third Law). However, in order to do that I have to spin the rotors and I'm not sure how I would approach a proper method to do so consistently. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    HL Physics

I am taking HL- English, History, and Physics and SL-Italian, Chemistry, and Math (IB Calculus). The Physics HL at my school is not an actual class and i have to do it independent study in the SL Physics class and was wondering if anyone has any tips or ideas on how i should go about taking this course and if i should look into a different HL elective (Im bad at Bio, Psych, and Business and want to pursue a science career in college)
  22. Hey! I am currently in the process of brainstorming and conducting preliminary research, and I've come up with this (physics ee): To explore the effect of various discharge cycles (the amount of resistance) on the power output of a photovoltaic solar cell (using a decade box) Would anyone have any advice as to a. whether this topic would work, and b. how do I approach this extended essay (essentially how do I approach a physics extended essay) I am sorry the questions are so broad but I would be happy with any sort of advice or guidance I can get. Thanks!
  23. So I have to choose my Extended Essay topic this week and I'm not sure how to go about it. My teacher advised us to choose something that is related to what we want ot do in the future and I want to go into the architecture stream. However, I'm not taking Visual Art or History and have NO IDEA how to get a topic idea now. I'm taking Physics HL, so I might be able to do a lab about the stability of building but I wanted to do something like that for my IA. Other subjects - Chem HL, Math HL, English Lit and Lang HL, Business SL, French SL
  24. so i just realized i needed chem for engineering, i had assumed that because i was not going to do chemical engineering i would not need chemistry. but universities coming to my school are saying otherwise. so pls its too late to switch to chem, what can i do?
  25. hey, (English is not my first language so excuse the poor grammar, but I'm sure most people would get what I'm saying here) So I think I am in trouble. I've tried for the past 5 months to solve and understand this issue. Let me tell you the whole story right from the beginning, so I enrolled into IB this year with only two GCSEs in my hand both of which I managed to screw up, D in business and B in math. Now I know I may seem stupid with those grades but I've never cared of school and studies till now and these past 5 months I've been completely reformed. I was forced to be in MATH STUDIES, but I knew I what I wanted to do in the future and that was to be an engineer. So I worked my ass off and got to HIGHER LEVEL MATH through self-studying their topics by myself and taking their monthly tests and ****ing proved the school I wasn't a donkey. After all that, I was happy I got in and satisfied with myself ( this could be an inspirational story to those who think they're dumb just cuz they did badly in one test), but my troubles didn't end there. After some surfing on uni applications for engineering, they all seem to require Math HL and PHYSICS HL!! Ok look I love physics I wish I could do HL but I'm just too far into the school year for them to accept me to join that class. I'm in physics SL btw so there might be a chance they'll accept me? I don't know tbh and its really bugging me. I looked at the difference between HL and SL physics and there is are 4 topics apart. Like srsly I don't get accepted due to not studying 4 chapters? Ok so I've heard of foundation year, but that's a total waste of my time for not doing 4 topics of physics! I'm however prepared for it if there is no option. Also this new school I'm in looks at my GCSE grades and uses them to place me in the right classes, like **** off, Math studies to Math Higher level. Anyways I came to this site for help from people and to see if anyone is in a similar situation as I am. So if u guys have any advice for me and stuff pls do say I really need to solve this issue quickly.
