  1. My school requires CAS projects to at least have two of the CAS qualities (ex: creative and service, action and service, etc) for your CAS project, and I'm not sure how flexible the "action" category is. I was planning to do creative writing or some type of journaling as my project, but to me, that seems like it only qualifies as creative. Does typing or writing with your hand count as an "action?" My CAS coordinator at school only mentioned action examples as like running a marathon, and that seems way more strenuous than writing.
  2. My school's CAS coordinator met with all the juniors after school this past week. He said that if we were doing a CAS activity outside of school, we had to get a letterhead paper from the activity's supervisor (Ex: doing Creativity hours by going to a piano lesson where I am being supervised by my piano teacher) describing what you did. He never specified that you needed a reflection for it. However, I've heard that you have to do a reflection on the activity, get it signed by your advisor, and you're all set. This has left me really confused. If anyone knows what to do, please tell me!
  3. Hi I was planning to do a runathon myself where I ask people to give me money for each lap/km that I do. I am not very good at running so the planning part is where I improve my own running skills. The fund gathered will then be gathered to a charity that I haven't decided upon yet. There is also an app that I've found online which makes them donate money to a charity of my choice for the distance that I've ran. I want to ask if this sounds like an acceptable CAS project, if not how can I make it one or what are some other suggestions.
  4. If I did laboratory work for a project outside school, does that count as action? It lasted 10 hours each weekend for 6 weeks, though I know that CAS is about learning outcomes and not hours anymore. For context, some other people in my school have gotten away with things like food donation drives as action
  5. So next year I will be going for my IB Honors diploma and need help on deciding what to do and how to do it. I have two problems: Action and creativity hours. For action, I am generally nonathletic and am shy and do not know what to do. I am thinking about joining the swim team because of many friends. Also I am thinking about taking parkour classes but fear I would be alone and awkward. If anyone has any better or easier options that would be appreciated. For creativity I want to know if I can count the art I do at home someway. Since I know I need a supervisor but cant use my family, I dont know what to do and want to know if the art I do at home can count somehow. Also I am learning to code, will that work? Any help is needed
  6. Hey everyone! My friends and I wanted to create a magazine sort of thing which has advice on how to survive the IB for the pre-IB students at our school and anyone who is starting the DP programme. We were wondering if that idea could count for CAS, specifically creativity. It will involve designing the actual magazine as well as writing the posts. Would that be approved by IB for creativity hours?
  7. Dear fellow IB students, Its that time again, almost the deadline for CAS. I am almost done, except for one more Action activity. Please help me and give some "easy" things which would count as Action? Thank you!!!

  15. So for creativity, could i put marching band practices and competition? Also, practicing the piano, since i play the piano and also put down piano recitals? Action... I'm doing tennis practice and tennis matches at my high school. Service. I'm doing National Honor Society and this other club.
  16. Hi. I was wondering if it as strict requirement to do 50 hours of every CAS component. I live in a small city and there aren't many sport classes offered. I'm worried that I won't be able to fulfill the requirement of doing 50 hours of Action and I will miss the deadline set by my school (April 2015) for CAS reflections. However, I have joined two foundations so I will probably have much more than 50 hours of Service by April 2015. So will I fail CAS if I have for example only 30 hours of Action but, say, 70 hours of Service (it gives altogether 100)? Or maybe it isn't that important? Maybe it depends solely on school's policy? I guess I will somehow manage to do these 50 hours but I would rather be sure if there is a reason to worry. Thanks in advance.
  17. Please help me!! I am a senior struggling to finish my CAS requirements, and I was wondering what categories acting in a play falls under? I know it counts for creative, but I really need active and service hours, so if anybody could tell me if I can count it for either of those, that would be greatly appreciated.

  19. So my friends and I are arguing over this, and I need the advice of the internet: Can I count going to concerts for action hours? In my opinion yes because it is a LOT of physical activity, but I'm not sure if it counts. Otherwise, can I count it for creativity in some way? Also, I'm teaching myself some American Sign Language. Could that possibly be creativity?

  21. Hi guys, I've seen a few worldwide CAS projects and they seemed super cool. I've wanted to participate in one myself for a while. Now, I don't have any specific ideas in mind, because I wanted everyone to have their own say in this since it is worldwide). I think we should all have a part in this and we should collaborate to find the right project! I did have a few vague suggestions from fellow IB-ers that I wanted to share: Show local injustices and make a strong political statementSomething with Amnesty International values - women, kids, minority rightsShow the country from which you come from's uniquenessIncorporate photography or videos to visually connect us IB studentsAttempt to incorporate the "Action" criteria, because it could be challenging Tell me what you think and please feel free to suggest your own ideas!! Thank you
  22. I'm new to IB this year and I was wondering if any of these activities have the potential to be counted as CAS! Photography (posted on flickr or something to improve yourself)Learning a languageInstrumentCookingRunningArt (a long term project)Pen Pals (writing to others globally)Can I put family as my supervisors or does it have to be someone from the "outside"? Thanks a lot!
  23. So a friend and I decided to start our own business doing landscaping and property maintenance for the summer. What started out as a little side job quickly became a major success that allowed us not only to acquire great experiences, but also a considerable income (well into the 5 digits). The thing is that although I do know that regular jobs don't usually count for CAS since you are getting paid, I wonder what is IB's position regarding entrepreneurial experiences such as mine. It not only allowed me to be active and creative all summer long, but it also corresponds to nearly all of the cas outcomes and allowed me to learn many essential life skills and lessons. Although I understand that it wouldn't count for service, should it not count for Action and Creativity? Creating a business demands much creativity since it not only requires the development of incredible planing and organizational skills (especially when going to school 5 days/week for the first 2 months before summer break), but also creative thinking in things such as getting new customers (advertising) as well as in doing the job itself (landscaping designs, etc...). As for the action bit, I can assure you that I was out there (average 50 hour weeks) sweating just as much and if not more than anyone else doing sporting activities. I asked my CAS coordinator if this could count and she couldn't answer me yet since she herself wasn't sure and had to consult others. What are your thoughts and opinions? Should this count as CAS or is IB really against any sort of paying job even if it is a legitimate student-created business? Could they really be against entrepreneurship?
  24. I'm trying to get CAS hours done, and can't figure out what to do for my action hours (I'm not a very athletic person). Do you have any ideas on easy things I can do? I'm doing yoga for some (approx. 21 hours), but am stuck on ideas for others. Thanks!
  25. My teachers just introduced to me to CAS , and I'm planning to take golf and body combat classes as part of my action, does that count? Plus, what things to do I need to complete in order to pass grade 11? Do I need to complete CAS, EE and TOK essay in grade 11 in order for me to go to grade 12? or I just need to focus on my grades (keep a minimum of 60% for my HLs and 70% for my SLs)? Thank you in advance!
