HL Anthropology Paper 1 Section B essay on ethics
  3. Hi, I am currently studying for my anthropology exams which will take place next week. I was wondering if anyone here is taking the same class and happens to know detailed examples of political economy, postmodernism and feminist anthropology in Philippe Bourgois´s "In Search of Respect"! Any help is appreciated! I will return the favor with other information and questions if possible!
  4. Hey yall, I am fining it quite difficult to find a topic for anthropology, I did come up with a topic and have discussed about it with my teacher and he gave me a green card however I am planning on doing two IA's for Anthropology because for the first topic I am planning on writing about body suspension and body modification however I because I have to do an observation I am nt quite sure if I will be able to do that due to private reasons and because there might not be any body suspension rituals in my country during the summer, therefore my second topic would be more of a back up plan if everything fail. I was thinking about writing my IA based on LGBTQ+ community however I am finding it quite hard to come up with the topic and the research question. I was thinking about writing on how has disguising their sexual orientation or gender had affected their life after coming out or a second topic would be about transgender people in todays society, regarding passing as a cisgender, finding jobs,.... Please help me, I am stuck and don't know what to do but I desperately want to finish my IA before I go back to school.
  5. My school is introducing Social and Cultural Anthropology, this September, as a new subject. I don't 100% trust my school to hire a qualified person, in Anthropology, as a teacher. So I want material to study over the summer, so I don't go into IB fully reliant on the teacher. From what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be a textbook for IB Anthropology specifically but rather general Anthropology textbooks. Which of these does your school use for Anthropology? Is your school planning to/using different textbooks for the post-may17 syllabus?

    IB Social Anthropology

Hi everyone! I've noticed that there is nothing on this website for Social Anthropology so I'd like to start one. If there is anyone else who has this class out there somewhere, please feel free to comment!
  7. How'd everyone find the Anthropology SL exam from this week? Which questions did everyone pick for paper 2?
  8. Hello to the handful (a really small handful) of people who take anthro! So how did you guys find the papers? I take HL and I was surprised by how much more 'simplified' the questions for paper 2 and 3 were as compared to the questions from the previous years. Overall I think the papers went quite well for me, although I couldn't finish paper 1 on time
  9. Hey everyone, I am currently in the tenth grade, and as the year is coming to an end, it is time for me to choose my IB classes. I have a couple of questions however. So far I have chosen all of my classes, except for one- my last standard level. So far, my classes are... HL English Lit. HL History HL French B SL Math SL Bio For my last topic I am considering Music or anthropology. I have been playing music for a really long time, and have just finished my MYP personal project on music and culture, so first off I would think, oh choose music. Although, I haven't played music very much in the last two years, and it is not taken very seriously at my current school. I have some questions about SL music: Is it time consuming? Do you need to have a lot of prior knowledge, or do you go over everything throughout the first year of DP? If you are taking SL, do you get to choose if you want to perform with a group or solo? Then, for anthropology, I have never taken an anthropology class before as it wasn't an option, although it seems very interesting. Some questions for this SL class are: Is this a difficult class? Do you need any prior learning? Is it very similar to history? Would it be pointless to take both? Does this class require a lot of memorization? I know bio and history do, and would taking anthropology as well be too much to handle? Is this a difficult class? Would you recommend it? Thanks everyone! Overall, what would you do? Would you recommend a specific class?
  10. I am doing my Extended essay in Anthropology and am just wondering if my research question is ok? Through what means do Cambodian museums display, the Khmer Rouge regime.? I have already written the base of the essay, I have answered the question, I am just wondering if I need theory within the question. (and how do I incorporate it into my introduction?)
  11. Hello All I've recently started my E.E and decided I really wanted to tackle something of interest. I ended up picking an E.E under the Social and Cultural anthropology topic and I'm in a bit of a rut. After looking at the requirements I'm not sure how to fit in my research on an online community. My E.E is on the "Bronies" fans of the television show My Little Pony. While I'm pretty confident about having enough material to write a persuasive essay about it, I'm not sure how much of it is creditable research. For any of you who have worked with Anthropology in IB before, what do you think is the best way to tackle this? How would you suggest I incorporate creditable anthropological research? What is the best way to research online communities? Should I even continue this E.E topic, or switch? Thanks!
  12. Hey guys, I'm writing my EE on Social Anthropology at the moment. I am aware of the 4000 word limit but I have difficulty estimating how many words each of my sections should be. Here's the brief plan I made with my supervisor: Introduction Chapter A: Coming to Greece Chapter B: Migration from Bulgaria Chapter C: Migration from Albania Conclusion (My topic is female migration and transnational motherhood from post soviet states if you're wondering) I "divided" the word amount like this: 600 900 900 1100 400My problem is that I feel like 600 words are too many for an introduction... What do you guys think? How many words was/is your essay's introduction? How many words should an introduction of a four thousand word essay have?
  13. For my EE, I chose the subject area Social and Cultural Anthropology. I do not have any formal background knowledge on anthropology besides online research and lectures. From the research and discussion with my supervisor on what I wanted to do for anthropology, I wanted to look into environmental and social effects on early language development. I was hoping to investigate in what areas of society/culture such as media, art, music, storytelling. I would also go into the process of how children learn language and how children of bi/multilingual families are affected. Is that topic too broad/vague? How specific should I be in the topic/research question? Anything helps! 😊
  14. Hello, we started plotting out our work scheme for the EE some 2 weeks ago or so. I had initially decided to write it on World Religions. I went over it so straightforward that I barely thought about how important this decision was. My topic is (was) something like "How can it be explained that Wicca is a religion practised underground" I was planning to go visiting some Wiccan circles in my city, and reading some religious texts as well as about World Religions in general and philosophy of religion. But then, since I'm not taking that specific subject on my school, I'm not really very familiar with the most suitable method I should follow to investigate in depth, and which sources I should take as reliable and which ones I shouldn't. I cannot say a religious text is not valid because it has no experimental support, since it's religion. But then, I cannot assume any text can be valid since it's not possible to find that level of objectivity when it comes down to religion, again. Now, I'm thinking about a completely new topic. I'm thinking about analysing from a philosophical standpoint youtube's most viewed video in my country in 2011, which is a chapter of a famous videoblog run by a teenager. I do take philosophy, as well as anthropology, as part of my curriculum, and both of my teachers are excellent, but my philosophy teacher got pregnant an is not currently attending job for a while. So, I'd have to undertake it all on my own at least for now. About the topic, I'm thinking about analysing the this videoblogger guy's discourse and how it allows to stablish these power networks with spectators (M. Focault), then another further analysis on Mexican expressions used, related too, to its enrolling capabilities (Octavio Paz), then placing it in a larger context and trying to explain why we Mexicans are viewing that, providing perhaps historical, social or economical background that could have influenced our collective preferences. (Gilles Lipovetsky, Sigmund Freud, Max Weber) And finally, concluding with perhaps a personal interpretation of how this Mexican guy reflects a whole country's ideology. After this big explanation, I only bear a doubt I cannot get solved out. Is this topic more suitable to be treated within the limits of philosophy? Or does it, otherwise, overpass the limit of philosophical approach for dealing with a social phenomenon solely? I believe this topic can be approached in a satisfactory way in either subject, but the limit is something not yet so clear for me. thank you for you advice.
