  1. I am going into my first year of IB. I had planned to take exercise science and art, but my school just let me know that this is not available. I must choose either bio and art, or psychology and exercise science. (We are on A day B day schedule so I must choose one of theses pairings) Which of these pairs has a higher course load? And which is harder content in general? Also, if there are any opinions not based on these questions I most definitely want to know that too! I am interested in all of these classes pretty equally, and just making sure I choose a pairing that will not be completely overwhelming. Thank you!!
  2. Hello, my name is Martina and I really need someone to help me with the EE, since my supervisor is avoiding me. The subject I chose for the EE is biology. I'd like to come up with an experiment that would allow me to talk about human physiology, but without involving people. (i did the same for the IAs in bio and chem by using enzymes and antacids) I'm now thinking about using visking tubes for my experiment. They could represent either the gut or the dialysis machine. I suppose that I cannot use them as a gut model since I'm already talking about the digestive system in the abovementioned IAs. So my question is: How can I carry on an experiment on dialysis with visking tube? I could possibly use the substances that are present in the dialysis fluid (like sodium, potassium, calcium etc) and showing their diffusion through the tube as in the machine, but I wouldn't have variables. Do you guys have any ideas? I'd really appreciate your help, I'm really struggling
  3. Hello! I'm doing my extended essay on plant growth, but I only have 3 trials from my experimenting. I was told that theres hardly any statistical analysis that i can do without more than 5 trials, aside from calculating the mean, and I have no idea where to go with my data. I was planning on a lab based EE from primary data, but I'm not sure if thats possible anymore seeing as I dont have enough trials for in depth statistical analysis. Should I run more trials, or should I change direction with my EE and use my primary data to support secondary data, turning it into a research based essay instead of experimental?? Please help!! - Thanks, Cherry
  4. Hi guys, I need some second opinions on my Biology HL IA, I'm doing an experiment on the effect of different carbon dioxide concentrations on the hormone ethylene's ability to ripen unripe pears. It's basically a spin-off of the simple "put-an-unripe-fruit-next-to-a-ripe-banana" experiment in which the ethylene hormone that is released by the ripe bananas helped accelerate the ripening of the fruit next to it, with the added twist of examining the effects of different carbon dioxide concentrations on this phenomenon. The ripeness of the pears would be measured using glucose extraction. 1) The lab at school has a CO2 sensor that I can use, but I'm a little loss in terms of trapping the carbon dioxide into an airtight container with the fruits for days. My source for CO2 is dried ice. Should I put the dried ice inside the container with the sensor, then wait until it reaches the concentration I need before taking the ice out and quickly placing my fruits inside? 2) Also, does anyone have a good, clear procedure on extracting glucose concentration from fruits? I found a couple, but some of the steps don't seem to work out for me in reality. They tell me weigh out approximately 1 gram of the fruit sample and then submerge it in 6 ml of distilled water. When I try to mash it up, the fruit sample is just too small. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or is there a better procedure out there? All in all, do you think this is an appropriate Bio HL IA topic or should I reconsider? I have several other options, but this is the one that was approved. My teacher's fine but she's not the most helpful. Any advice would be appreciated! - Confused Bio student
  5. Hey!! I'm starting IB in less than a month and I already chose my subjects because I wanted to major in Psychology. However, I am now leaning towards veterinary science. At first, I chose bio SL. To be a vet, I first need to have a bachelor degree in Biological Science. The uni I plan on going does not require chem. But, if I do major in biological science, there will be some chem classes. I am for sure taking Bio but I am not sure if I should move it to HL and add Chem SL. My question here is how hard is BIO HL compared to BIO SL? (I'm interested in bio) Will chem SL help me in uni (Biological Science major) even though my uni does not require it? should i take it? (I'm really bad at math and I do not really enjoy chem and I found the intro class hard but I did not really pay attention)

  7. I have to choose my subjects this week and am wondering if HL bio is worth it for me. I wouldn't consider myself a very science-y person, although i am very interested in plants, evolution, dna, neurobiology and that kind of stuff. I am not at all interested in the human body, (find it unpleasant, really) and just the thought of dissecting something makes me queasy. I don't have any big problems with memorising content, i am more scared of writing lab reports. Will this be a big problem? Also is it very hard to use microsoft excel in bio for graphs and such? Would very much appreciate any guidance and advice on the matter, thank u
  8. Hey everyone, I'm an 11. grade IB student with higher level subjects English, Bio, and Music. I really don't know how to study Bio and Music, because I came late to this school year, which is the reason why I've some gaps. Because of that, I've to catch up about 1.5 semesters on my own and I really don't know how to do it. Is someone here who has the same HL subjects and can recommend some study books or some useful tips? Thank you for every useful answer!
  9. Hey Guys, For my Bio IA I wanted to to do it on plants or food, but I wanted to do my without physically bringing or buying any plants (cause they’re too expensize for the quantity I’m buying). So if you guys have any ideas for these topics or biology in general that would help so much! Or if you have any pointers to build on or telling me what topics to avoid will help as well. ALSO I WANTED TO USE A COLORIMETER IN MY IA, BUT I DONT HAVE ANY IDEAS ON ANY GOOD EXPERIMENTS TO USE THEM (the personal engagement is weak... so if you have any ideas for colorimeter will also help...) One’s I have so far include... -chromatography -yeast aerobic respiration -germination -transpiration -fermentation I’M SO STUCK, I DON’T WHAT TO DO OR WHERE TO START! ALL THE IDEAS I GIVE ARE REJECTED (either too common or not interesting in terms of personal engagement). PLEASE HELP!!!
  10. Hello, As I am doing my world studies EE research, I came across a few obstacles. For my world studies essay, (which requires 2 subjects to approach a topic) I want to approach the biological and societal effects of using a gene editing technology called CRISPR in modifying and killing off mosquitos that carry Malaria. There's a global project going on called project target malaria, that has already conducted lab experiments and have proved that mosquito populations with malaria can be reduced. However what has left me rather confused is if I can approach the topic the way I want to. I want to explore what would happen in society and ecosystems if this global project does what it aims to. My research would be based on previous information (such as the role of mosquitos in ecosystems) and apply it to answer my question. And this brings me to ask: Is this topic too hypothetical? Should my topic entail something that has already been accomplished? All advice would be appreciated
  11. Going into jr year and class choices are due in a few weeks, please respond and thank you in advance to the ppl that do What sciences should I take and at what level if I wanna go into engineering or medical. Like what would be the best base for college? Also at what level should I take math? ^ 2 HL spots and 1 SL
  12. Hey! I have been sort of stressing out about my extended essay a little bit just because of the amount of pressure there is to get a good grade. I have been given the subject Biology (hahah obviously, it's in the name) but I don't really know how I'm supposed to write my own methodology and to actually structure it. Does anyone know how to?? Oh, and my question is: What is the impact of different light intensities and pH levels have on the bioluminescence and growth of Pyrocystis lunula? Any feedback would be 210% appreciated!! Thanks!!
  13. Hello guys, I need an interesting bio hl topic for my IA. I was thinking about something connected with allelopathy, for example, planting mint and cucumber near each other and measuring how the cucumber is affected, maybe adding different temperatures so it wouldn't seem so easy? or something with essential oils and how they affect the growth of different plants but I don't really know which I could choose. What do you guys think?
  14. Okay, so our biology teacher is a noob and we need help. She doesn't know what she's doing at all. She gives us the same tests that she gives her standard biology classes and we haven't covered the whole book at all. What do I do? I know for a fact that whatever she does won't help. So how do I save myself? What can I do to teach myself one of my least favorite subject? Please help me. I am dying and I don't want to fail.
  15. Hello does anyone know where I can find a stress inducing test like a mental arithmetic test or a Montreal Imaging Stress Task that works and is free? Thanks
  16. Hello guys, I am due to submit my extended essay and I have given my subject choice as chem+bio, but I cannot come up with any good extended essay topic. I want to do something related to medicine. Any sort of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
  17. please someone answer me so i can decide whether or not i should spend 30 dollars investing in this website, is it worth it? is it a good website? or am i being scammed?
  18. Hey guys, Could someone pls give me feedback on the courses I have chosen for the DP programme. I want to go into the med field. My school doesn't offer both sci at HL. Without further ado this is what I'm thinking of taking: Hl Chem, Sl Bio, Sl French(mandatory), Hl Lang & Lit (mandatory), Sl Math, Hl History
  19. Hi I am not sure whether the topic of I want of to choose is appropriate for my IA. I was thinking of comparing the quality of apple fruits from mechanically thinned plants vs fruits not interrupted by thinning in their growth (my grandma has an apple orchard). Even though my teacher accepted the topic I have an impression she is not very familiar with this process and I am not sure whether it is not too simple. Thinning of the plants is a common way in gardening of improving plants' quality and increasing their development efficiency. Therefore, isn't it too obvious? I could explore the extent to which it does influence the quality of a fruit.. But I'm still not sure. I'd be very thankful for your opinions!
  20. So I'm doing my bio ia on the effect of different concentrations of sulfuric acid on seed germination. It's been nearly 3 weeks and I only have data for the control test (spraying with distilled water), and very few seeds germinated for any of the other concentrations (0.2M, 0.5M, 1M, 2M, 5M). These few seeds that have germinated won't really have any effect when I do the means for the 5 trials of each. Is it ok if I have very little variation in my data? It would be like an average of 14 out of 20 seeds for the control test and then less than 1 for every other increment. Does this reflect badly on me in any of the criteria? Or should I try and 'manipulate' my results? I realistically don't have much longer to do the experiment as I'm running out of supplies and school is closed for the break, and my teacher wants the other half of this ia done as soon as possible. Is it worth faking my results or should I just be honest?
  21. Hey! I'm starting my IB1 year soon and I'm wondering which subjecs I should take. I absolutely suck at maths like no other and I don't particularly like sciences. With keeping this in mind, is SL bio impossible? I need to take at least one and I feel bio would be easiest for me because I have a relatively good memory and it's the least "sciencey" subject. Am I making the right choice? How hard is it?
  22. HELP! I've just started Junior year, so IB has just kicked off and we have 2 weeks to change our courses if we wish. I have always been sure that I want to do 2 Sciences, first I picked Bio and Chem (both HL), then I changed my mind so I decided to do Bio and Phy (HL) because I've always loved physics. But now I am starting to change my mind again, because I've read that Bio and Phy aren't the best combination and I feel like with those classes my college majors all of a sudden gets way more limited. Help! Should I stay in Physics or change back to Chem??
  23. hey guys! I'm going into the IB program this year, and I have 4 HLs and 2 SLs. 2 of my 4 HLs are Bio and Physics. I recognize that this is going to a particularly rigorous course selection, so does anyone have any advice? Just so you know, my other courses are HL Psych, HL English, SL Math Year 2 (took year 1 in grade 10), and SL French.
  24. Hey guys! So Year 1 is right around the corner and I'm pretty excited but have recently ran into a problem. I've chosen physics SL for my Group 4 subject, but have recently considered switching to Biology SL since I've heard that it's less difficult. Is this true? Personally, I am quite decent at math and pretty good at memorising things. I have some background in biology (only the basics) and very little in physics. None of these are required for the University program I wish to attend (Econ/Business). I also dislike the sciences in general so I'd rather just choose the easier subject lollll. But I guess physics would be SOMEWHAT helpful since it's related to math, but then again, I've heard that it's quite difficult. Which of the two would you say is easier and which one would you recommend if I'm just trying to get the highest grade possible in my Group 4 subject? Thanks!
