  1. I'm a month into IB and my classes so far are: HL Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Arabic B; SL Economics and English LL. However, I've been rethinking what I want to do in the future and have been moving away from engineering/physics towards more Maths and computer science. If I decide to drop chemistry for comp sci, my schedule will be as follows: HL Maths, Physics, English LL; SL Comp Sci, Economics, Spanish AB. My school doesn't offer computer science Higher Level. I'm worried that this setup is not as strong as the first one with regards to me applying for mathematics at Oxford. Also, without CS HL, there is no way I can apply for CS at Oxford and be taken seriously. Thoughts?
  2. How do I make sure I get into Cambridge? Even if I don't get the required grades?
  3. What are the best IB textbooks and revision books? I went on OSC ( Oxford Study Course) website and I saw multiple revision books, an app that contains all parts of the syllabus for all subjects, with knowledge tests ( SmartBacc) . They also have free IB math videos. It loos amazing. Do you recommend Oxford? What about Cambridge or Pearson? How good are they? Which companies are best for eh subject??? Link to OSC https://osc-ib.com/
  4. I'm a first-year IB student taking Maths HL and our class is currently using the Oxford textbook (the one with the purple flower on the cover). Personally, I find that the explanations/examples are lacking in this book which is a real problem since I practically have to self-study the subject because the teacher is crap. Also, lots of people say the questions in the Oxford book are a lot easier than the questions on the actual Maths HL exam. I have every Maths HL textbook on PDF so getting them won't be a problem. I just haven't gotten the time to reference any other book besides the Oxford one since the class progresses really fast. Please leave your textbook recommendations below and your thoughts on other textbooks in the hellish realm of Maths HL. Thank you in advance!
  5. I am currently in the process of selecting my IBDP courses, and was curious about subject requirements for engineering at Cambridge University. I intend to choose: HL: Maths Physics Economics Arabic SL: Business English Lit and Lang
  6. Guys, I am in a hurry. I was doing my application for IE University in Segovia to take a dual bachelor of Law and Business Administration, when I "stumbled" in the admission tests. They require either the IE Admission test or other as SAT, LNAT, CAS or ACT. The Cambridge Assessment Test (CAS) includes those Language tests like the First (FCE), the Advanced and the Proficiency, right? Because I have done my First (FCE) Exam and if it does count, then I must use it as I haven't done any of these. Could anyone who knows or has been confronted with these admission tests explain help me? If I am not able to upload my FCE result, then can you explain to me how can I do one of the other exams and am I still on time? Really I need fast answers! Thanks in advance, Richard
  7. Hey guys, Does anyone know where can a I find the answers to the Maths SL Cambridge textbook ?
  8. Hey guys, I was wondering about the application process for architecture in certain unis. I know that Cambridge only does an interview + writing and drawing assessment, but what about UCL, Sheffield, Cardiff and Bath? I heard Sheffield wanted you to do an task showing your street, but I haven't found anything else on the other unis. Thanks
  9. Hey hey hey I'm planning to get a head start on HL Math by working my way through a textbook over my summer break. I currently have PDFs of the Pearson textbook, Cambridge textbook, and H&H textbook. Which one is the best for a clear, thorough introduction to math for a person who is quite nervous about HL math and can a) explain the material clearly (I don't care if its a long explanation- it needs to be good), b) provide lots of practice questions and c) have challenging questions that can test my abilities, similar to ones on the exam? Or is there another textbook that is better? merci beaucoup
  10. Hey, I found those Oxford Summer Courses (OSC) in the internet and I am considering attending in mid IB revision in Cambridge. Has anyone participated in these courses? If yes, could you tell me if they are actually helpful and worth the price?
  11. Hey guys So I'm just practicing some questions from Ellie Tragakes (http://osboskovic.edu.rs/dev/gimnazija/sites/default/files/pomoc_u_ucenju__ib_1_exam_practice_paper_1.pdf) for macro. Now some of them are pretty straightforward. Can you please go through some questions and find out if any of these have a chance of coming in the finals or will they be more complex? Also the questions in this for unemployment are limited, so is unemployment a very small part of the syllabus in the finals? Thanks
  12. Hi, I was just wondering how many IB points do I really need for the listed universities? UBC McGill Kent I am in grade 11 semester 2 and currently getting around 30 IB points. However I do take hard subjects like Physics HL and Chem Hl. I think I will be able to get around 34 points by the end of this semester.
  13. Hey! So, has anyone got an interview from either Oxford or Cambridge this year? When are you going and what course have you applied to? Figured we could panic together!
  14. Hello IBSurvival! This is my first post here but I've been reading this forum ever since I started going to a international school (March this year). Anyway, I just started my IGCSE's and so far it has been a smooth jurney, BUT today my maths teacher asked me after lesson if I would like to do additional mathematics, as I've had really good grades and on my last test I had an average of 98%. I have overall pretty good academic results, last year I've had an average of 6.7 out of all my subjects... There are only 2 people taking this class right now and so far they didn't do anything hard, but it's the beginning of the school year so they didn't really have many lessons yet… In the future I would like to study medicine in Oxbridge or Ivy League universities in USA, and I've heared that Additional Maths would look really good on my report card and prepare me really good for the IB mathematics (at least SL). The thing is : I've heared that Additional Mathematics is a really hard subject and that many people fail it, even though they had A*'s in other IGCSE exams. This scared me a little bit even though I was confident about doing it, especially with my teacher telling me that I have the "talent" for maths. Shall I just stay with extended curriculum offer or accept the challenge and do it? Here are also the subjects that I want to choose in IB : HL Biology HL Chemistry HL French/Physics SL Mathematics SL English SL Physics/French I hope you can help me with my decision because I don't know what shall I do. Ps. I'm sorry about my spelling/grammar mistakes but English is not my mother tongue and I've been only in a polish/ german school before (I also just realized that my post looks kinda messy but as soon as I try to correct something it just gets worse)
  15. Hi everybody! A while ago, I received the last reply from the unis I applied to. The offers I got are from St Andrews (36 points) and Durham (38, 666 at HL). Though, I got rejected from Cambridge - and I'd really love to study there. I think I do have rather strong chances of getting in (how modest of me! ). I was pretty unlucky this year (had some health problems which got in the way) and my application ended up a bit below my expectations. I had predicted 42 points overall, but with 667 at HL (including 6 from the subject I chose to study). Apart from that, I think I screwed up my interview So I guess I could just get over it (I mean rejection from Cabridge) and choose something else... but the problem is that I really believe that studying there is within my reach. So I'd like to get my results in July and hopefuly reapply. However, I would prefer not to take a gap year because I wouldn't like to lose a place at St Andrews or Durham and be left with nothing if I won't do well enough on the exams. So my question is - can I accept an offer from St Andrews/Durham and reapply from that position next year? If so, which of these two would you recommend? I think I would be pretty happy studying at St Andrews - I really like the fact that I could join my interests and study 2 subjects (and get a master's degree after 4 years!). Also the location and size of the town really appeals to me Though, isn't Durham - I'm interested in geography - academically better? I am at a loss, could anyone give me some advice? Sorry for a lengthy post!
  16. Is there any point in me applying to cambridge (or maybe oxford, but I would prefer cambridge) with my results as detailed below? Or are my grades just too low? Also which of these Uni's courses would I have best chance of getting into with my subject combo? Original IB grades: (Achieved May 3013, before retakes) HL English 6 HL physics 4 HL art 6 SL psychology 6 SL maths 4 SL Spanish ab initio 7 Core 0 Total 32/45 Final IB grades: (After retaking physics, maths and core in november 2013) HL English 6 HL physics 7 HL visual arts 6 SL maths 6 SL psychology 6 SL Spanish ab initio 7 Core 3 Total 41/45 (At GCSE I got 5 A*'s 2 A's and a B) So is it worth applying????
  17. Erudite

    Oxford OR Cambridge

Someone told me that you can apply to either Oxford or Cambridge, never to both, at undergrad level. Is there a reason for this? Moreover, will they find out if you apply to both now that your other UCAS universities are not revealed to universities you've applied to? Also, how do you decide which college to apply to? Which are the best for law? They all seem super! Thanks! Erudite.
  18. I am a good student I think with some work I would even be eligible to study at Oxford / Cambridge, but the problem is that I can't afford to pay the amount that they demand. So I started looking for scholarships / financial aid programs, but I didn't find any. The closest thing I've found is the student loan, which I really wouldn't like to take. Then I decided that maybe there are smarter people out here who have already found the answer to my question, and came here . So, do you know any oxbridge scholarships / financial aid programs for European IB students? scholarships / financial aid programs for European (I'm from Finland) IB students? Or do you know for a fact that such things do not exist?
  19. So, my end goal is to be working in corporate law. Originally, I was planning to study a more academic-based undergrad degree in the UK (such as Oxford's PPE or UCL's ESPS), and then study law at graduate level in the USA, however the more I think about it, the more I'd rather do law in the UK and then do an MBA in the States. However, one thing that's worrying me is the fact that I have no work experience in the legal field. I've heard conflicting reports on this topic, but the general consensus seems to be legal work experience is highly desired for law applicants. Being a November 2012 session candidate, it's impossible for me to undertake legal work experience between now and my UCAS applications, so my question is: how much will this lack of legal work experience hurt my chances? For reference's sake, the universities I'd be looking to apply at, in no particular order, are as follows: - Oxbridge (yet to decide which - any opinions on their respective law programs would be appreciated) - Durham - LSE - UCL (hoping to make it into their LLB/JD dual degree - what are my odds like? How many of their students normally apply for this program?) - Either Warwick or Edinburgh (opinions?) Advice would be appreciated.
  20. IB subjects: English A1 SL Spanish ab initio SL Economics HL Biology HL Maths SL Music HL TOK: Ethics EE: Music Applying as an international student - I'm from Australia. I'm predicted a total score of either 44 or 45, and have plenty of extracurriculars (which aren't really relevant to the course I'm wanting to take). I've been debating for my school for 5 years now, and I've had 5 days of work experience at a law firm. What are my chances of getting into Law at either of the universities? I'm not too familiar with the LNAT, so assuming I don't do so well on that. And, just out of curiosity, what are my chances for an Economics degree?
