  1. Hello, has anyone there done an IA in chemistry about activation energy and could share some tips or their marks with me? I have a topic of What is the activation energy of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in presence of catalase, by measuring the time taken for 10cm3 of oxygen gas to be evolved at different temperatures? Either at different temp or also without catalase and with MnO2? My justification, in brief, is that H2O2 is present in cells and catalase is needed to break it down so that it isn't harmful and therefore low activation point is important (and I want to see a) what it is b) alternatively how does it compare to reaction without catalase). My teacher says that it's not really a good topic because there's no reason for this experiment and perhaps I should at least compare it with catalysts that include elements that are in human body, but there aren't really such as for example we're better off without Pb in our body. What do you think?

    Studying for chem exam

My sl chemistry exam is coming up in a few weeks, and I´m really struggling with studying. I started studying(wrote notes following the syllabus, read the textbook, watched a few videos, did multiple choice questions) a few weeks ago and have already gotten through most of the topics. However, whenever I try a past exam or questions in the textbook´s chapter review, I just can´t seem to do it. I seem to just completely forget whatever new information I learnt the day before, or how I´m supposed to solve certain problems. I´m starting to feel stressed since my exams coming up soon, and wanted to know how others studied for their chem exam. What worked and what didn´t? Any general tips on how to do well on the exam??
  3. Hi guys, I just wanted to ask if you think these topics are suitable for my Chem HL IA: -Either the pH change of water over a period of time and how it is affected by the temperature -The rate of reaction of glowsticks at different temperatures(Using a light sensor). I would be open to suggestions on titration reactions that I could do. Thanks in advance
  4. I need to start getting solid with my IA topic but right now I am just brainstorming ideas and wanting to hear some ideas from peers. So far I only have around three ideas but are fairly common and perhaps not HL worthy: 1) Calcium content in different types of milk ( not sure how to do this one but interested, wondering if I should use the milk of different animals or different processes and procedures) 2) Enzyme and substrate relationship on how changing the amount of substrate would affect the enzyme activity and perhaps the pH as well? ( Biological catalyst, a bit worried that this is too biology, thinking about using catalase and hydrogen peroxide but afraid that it is too common and also would like to explore different enzymes as well) 3) Best material for cooling pack (quite random really...) I don't really have a lot of confidence in myself and due to previous issues, I have stuff in my chemistry academics to catch up on and find it different to concentrate and understand but I'm willing to learn and work hard. Please do suggest different Chem IA topics as well! I would love to hear them and perhaps find one that I really like.
  5. How many marks are uncertainties worth in the chemistry ia? If I were to not include them at all how many marks would I lose? If I did them incorrectly how many marks would I lose?

Which HL to drop to SL?

Hello everyone, I am currently doing 4 HL's but I need to drop one as soon as possible. Right now I am taking Math, Physics, Chem and Econ HL. I want to be an astrophysicist. I know that I need to keep Physics HL, I do not know about Math because even though I am strong at math, the teachers say that it will be very challenging for me and I will not be able to get the score I want, but if I drop to Math SL she said that the course would be kinda too easy for me not letting me develop my skills. I have to choose between Chem and Econ which one to drop. If I were to have Physics, math, and chem HL the teachers say I would pick the "death combo", and I can see why. But they complement the best If I were to pick Physics, econ, and chem HL, would I need more maths but should I be okay with just Math SL for astrophysics? or should it be better if I keep Math HL? The other option would be to have Physics, math, and econ HL, in which math would be the most challenging one for me. I have tried the 4 for a semester, and I am allowed to keep it like that for another semester before yr12 starts, but me and my math teacher would like if I decide as soon as possible, if possible before the second semester of my first year starts. Thank you all for your help! All thoughts are welcomed!

    Nature of Science

What is Nature of Science? It seems like the IB is beginning to ask more and more questions on it in the exams. Is there anything that I need to know or understand for it? I know that you can just use some common sense and logic to answer these types of questions, but is there any way to prepare?

Is this IA idea good enough?

Hello! I wanted to compare natural pH indicators (ex, red cabbage and beets) with the standard ones. I was thinking of just doing pH titrations to compare the results of the natural vs standard. Along with that, I was going to produce the pH curves and calculate the pKa value as well as the equivalence points. Is this good enough for an IA? Should I add anything?
  9. Dear associates, I need your help. My Extended Essay subjects & topic are due soon, but I am struggling with the choice. I am determined to study medicine after graduating, and thus I want my EE to be relevant. However, when it comes to related sciences, Biology and Chemistry, teachers in my school strongly advise against them, claiming that students get the lowest grades for these subjects. I am interested in them but not much competent in either Bio or Chem, as I picked them only a month ago (this is another story 😂). Those of you who are experienced in the sciences or anyone willing to help, please give me your advice! Is it true that it is nearly impossible to get a high mark (A or B) in EE in experimental sciences? Do I better choose an interdisciplinary subject? Could you probably share some thoughts about medicine-related topics in EE? I would be genuinely grateful for any reply 😊
  10. Here is my Chemistry EE Topic and Question that I have developed: Topic: "A comparison of NaOH and CaO as alkaline catalysts in the transesterification reaction of Vegetable Oil to Bio diesel based on Green Chemistry Principles" RQ: “How would NaOH and CaO compare as alkaline based catalysts in a green synthesis of bio diesel from the transesterification of Vegetable Oil?" Independent Variable/s: Type of Catalyst - Homogeneous (NaOH) and Heterogeneous (CaO) [amount and concentration are control] Dependent Variables: Rate of Reaction Yield of bio-diesel Produced (might replace this with something else since yield is not affected by the catalyst; suggestions?) Amount of dissolved catalyst in produced bio-diesel (it affects the performance of the fuel) Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns? I'd appreciate some constructive criticism with anything on this post. I'm trying to get a solid grasp of my topic at this time so anything helps! Please point out the uncertainties and invalidities and I'll be thankful.

    Chemistry IA - 13 Pages

Hello guys, Simple question, but maybe not as simple answer - Can my Chemistry IA be 13 pages long of the 13th page includes only the citations? I understand that the maximum page number is 12, and I tried to reduce the IA as much as I could, but I am stuck at 13. Thanks a lot 🙂

    Chemical Kinetics Notes

These are notes that I took in my IB Chemistry class for the topic of Chemical Kinetics. It discusses rate law, integrated rate law, orders of reaction, etc.
  13. Hey, My topic for my Chemistry SL IA is the quantitative analysis of vitamin c in raw tomatoes compared to cooked tomatoes. I thought about making 5 repetitions because of the certainty. I will get 5 results overall. Is that enough? Or do I need more repetitions? Is this topic even useful? If not, what do you request? I'm open for ideas! PS: I have no time left, deadline by tomorrow. Thank you
  14. Hey guys, Hope everyone did well for their exams. I got a 4 sitting at a 53 on the grade boundary for chem HL and need 1 mark to progress to the next grade boundary. I'm contemplating requesting a remark except that my component scores and total scores are already quite low P2: 25 P3: 33 IA: 15 Anyone has been in a similar situation and has advice to offer?

(ASAP) pH 10 buffer solution recipe

Does anyone know a pH 10 buffer recipe? I showed my teacher one but we didn’t have10M ammonia so it didn’t work out. This is for an EDTA titration and I’m not sure if ammonia buffer is the only one I can use but I’m desperate for any recipes bc i’m conducting tomorrow!!

I heated NaCl (table salt) and it turned from white to blackish colored ash-like substance (yeah, great explanation) Why did it happen?
  18. Could someone please help me check that my calculations are correct?? I am calculating the purity of aspirin and the mass using a back titration, however, I am getting weird results and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong I could really use your help?
  19. I need to change my RQ a little bit probably... I know it is not good to make an EE of science without doing experiments yourself, but I won't change my mind. My RQ is Why are the physicochemical effects of celestial bodies important to generation of life? I will narrow the life, but I don't know if I should focus on a certain physical or chemical effect, since the information might not be enough. Celestial bodies I think maybe using one astro, or using more and comparing them.(I think Jovial and/or Saturnine systems). Would appreciate some help...
  20. Hello everyone, Right now I'm really starting to seek out topics for my IA. However the ones that I have found interesting so far ended up being beyond my knowledge to accomplish. For example my first idea was : - To establish at which points and in which environment graphene paints would absorb more CO2 then released while they cured and my other topic was : - To investigate pH trends of heavy metal bioleaching with different concentrations of sulphur Could someone give me a push into the right direction in how I could procure the necessary data or what type of procedure I should use? Thank you in advance!

    Chem IA help pleaseee

I think I have an idea of what I want to do but I reckon it is too simple, can I please have some advice- I am thinking of changing the concentration of a ligand (not too sure which one) and measure the absorption, or maybe do this with one or two other ligands. Then I will sketch a graph and use the Beer-Lambert law to determine the value of eb. Please let me know if it is bad or not, I am kind of struggling.
  22. "To what extent was the cold war responsible for the separation between North Korea and South Korea?" is this too broad? please someone help how i should phrase my research question. I really do have interest and a lot of knowledge in this area (the Korean War) & (The Cold War)
  23. Hi, I'm in my first year of IB and I am starting to research potential topics for my chemistry extended essay. Because I want my extended essay to include one of my passions, I decided to write it about something related to medicine, pharmacy or even climate change. So far, all my ideas have been rejected by the supervisor due to them being inappropriate or too difficult. But I think I finally came up with something usable, I still need to work narrowing it down but do you think to research about the effectiveness of expired meds such as Ibuprofen or aspirin and relating it to the maybe useless expiration date of some meds? (they are only there because of law). Do you think it will be enough for a chemistry extended essay? Thanks in advance
  24. Hi, I'm planning to do my IA on investigating the effect of different concentrations of cyanuric acid on the chlorine concentration in swimming pools. Any idea how to find out the concentration of chlorine in the water? I've heard of the use of titration before, anyone know how the titration works? Help is much appreciated. Thank you
