  1. Talking about Abortion: Pro-Life or Pro-Choice The conversation surrounding abortion has always been controversial. Even in the 21st century, the thought of discussing abortions in some communities has been tabooed. Unfortunately, this so called 'taboo' has been the reality of some women - whether it be the result of unprotected sex, sexual assault or fear of keeping the child, millions of women have had to choose between life or choice. Some factors that may affect the final decision include, but are not limited to, gender, religion and society. Dialogue of abortion and the pro-life and pro-choice stances have normally taken place between 'adults'. However, I think that as the future of the world, we should be having discussions about this right now. We should be communicating and expressing our opinions at a young age and we should be given the opportunity to dialogue about such issues. When people do not dialogue, they do not understand. Humans are scared of what they do not understand - we disrespect, degrade and in some cases, turn to violence in order to make someone else understand that we are right. It's important to talk about issues such as abortion and to share opinions in order to be aware. When we have conversations such as political issues, social issues and religion issues, we are fulfilling the criteria of being IB World Learners. I think that this forum and thread allows for IB students from all around the world, people of different colours, religions and communities to express their opinions. So, I invite all of you to voice what your sentiments are. Are you pro-choice or pro-life? Why? What factors affect your stance? I think it'll be interesting to see what IB students around the world think of this. Thank you!! Please, respect the opinions of everyone when replying! If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.
  2. I am writing my math studies IA and am super behind. My topic is on mortality rates in men and women between 1960 and 2010. If anyone could help me with running the data analysis using a chi-squared test I would be eternally grateful!! Thank you!!
  3. Hi all, I just wanted to know how difficult it's going to be for me to study and succeed in IB. I'm currently studying in grade 10 and I'll most probably start studying according to IB's curriculum next year. I'm currently studying the Holt McDougal Modern Chemistry, English Literature/writing, Biology, and Phyiscs. The McGraw Hill Algebra 2 on top of social studies, Farsi literature/writing and Arabic. I find all of the subjects I'm studying relatively easy (except Farsi. Even though it's my mother language), and I aced all of my finals last term. But I'm kinda stressed to be studying IB as I have no idea about the difficulty level. The hl subjects that I'm gonna pick are biology, chemistry, Farsi and English (I have no idea whether it's gonna be A or B; it's mandatory to study Farsi and English hl at my school) I want to study medicine and I looked at dozens of university admission requirements for the said course; most of the universities I'm interested in require a minimum of 6 in bio hl and chem hl on top of an overall score of 38/45. As I said, I just want to know how much energy I'll need to exert on my studies and how difficult it'll be to meet the mentioned requirements. Your insight would be appreciated! Edit: Do I need to study physics as wrll to get into medicine? I'm already picking Math sl so not sure how that'll work.
  4. Do you believe in gender equality? do you believe in feminism and what it stands for? If not, Why? This is purely out of curiosity and is not meant to attack anybody.
  5. I received this discussion topic MLI paper in my Level 1 and Level 2 music IB training, but never got any of the answers to whether or not each of these are appropriate topics and WHY would or would not work. I've attached the page in question, but still have no clue as to whether these would work - so does anyone have the answers? MLI Discussion.pdf
  6. Hey guys M&m_Fan99 (Thaddeus Peuterschmidt) back with another IB Survival forum post! So, today's QOTD (question of the day) is: "Is my school's uniform policy sexist?", if you couldn't tell from the title of this forum post. In the uniform policy, it is stated that girls are not allowed to have their skirts more than 10cm above their knees, but there are no rules about how high boys can wear their shorts. Many are outraged at this and is calling this inequality. So IB Survival forum viewers, what do you think? Do you think my school is being sexist? :ivan:
  7. What do you guys think of biology paper 1 and paper 2 HL & SL?
  8. Ok so I'm stuck in a really annoying situation in my arts class. Basically over the course of the past year I've been producing pieces (mainly photographs) that include nude models and have encountered a few problems with my school when I expressed that I wanted to include these photographs in my final exhibition. Basically I was told to alter the pieces or I wouldn't be able to submit them. Whilst I understand they probably want to appease everyone (teachers, parents who may see the exhibit etc.) and avoid any sort of social faux pas, frankly, I found the experience to be patronizing both towards myself and the potential audience. Even more so because the images aren't sexual (no genitals are even visible) and they aren't even really "nude" because they are covered in body paint. Further, no other students found any issue with the images. Also the model is of legal age, gave permission to exhibit and all that jazz. Does anyone know if there are any official IBO rules on nudity in exhibition pieces? In general I really want to hear your opinion on the issue, for example do you think it was a different media the response would be different?

  14. Since it has been 24 hours, how did you HL Lit students do?? I chose question 8 (i think) under the prose fiction section that talked about how characters often are trying to escape something or someone. I personally thought it was pretty easy, I easily wrote 5 and half pages. How did everyone else do?

  17. Hi guys - I've been poking around and I haven't been able to find a forum for this but I thought it might be a good idea to have a worldwide discussion about the recently released theory of knowledge titles. Thought this might be a good idea so we can read other people's perspectives and perhaps see other aspects to look at. Let me know if this already exists and I'll take it down :/. “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.†Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of Knowledge. “Knowledge within a discipline develops according to the principles of natural selection.†How useful is this metaphor? “The knower’s perspective is essential in the pursuit of knowledge.†To what extent do you agree? “Without application in the world, the value of knowledge is greatly diminished.†Consider this claim with respect to two areas of knowledge. To what extent do the concepts that we use shape the conclusions that we reach? “In knowledge there is always a trade-off between accuracy and simplicity.†Evaluate this statement in relation to two areas of knowledge. So let's organize this a bit, if you want to add to the discussion start the reply off with the title number.
  18. Hello IBS Forums, It doesn't seem like I'm going to pass. My CAS is next to nothing complete and my extended essay is a wreck. I'm actually doing fine in my subjects but we have mocks soon and I won't have enough time to finish CAS. I'm sort of in fear of failure and so are my teachers so I'm wondering what I can do if I fail.
  19. Greetings fellow survivors! (As well as those that are currently trying to survive.) I have below a quote from the renowned poet and novelist, C.S. Lewis, on his take on the subject of Love. I, personally, find it a little dark, since it points to a negative outcome regardless of what path you choose (i.e. to love or not to love). However, he views the act of not loving at all leading to "damnation." Do you agree? If so, please state your reasons (they don't necessarily have to be based on pure logic alone). Speaking from my experiences so far (age 18), I don't understand why love is made out to be such an important factor of life. I mean I understand the role of affection when it comes to family (e.g. parents and siblings), but what I do fail to see is how infatuation with a stranger of the opposite sex (or same sex, no discrimination) is such an important part of life. What about all those individuals that simply don't have any interest in these things. Asexual, the term coined for people that have no sexual feelings or desires. Are they considered 'broken' by the rest of society? Or are they thought of as simply being different? And what if you simply choose NOT to pursue the abstract concept of love? I mean, it's all cool to have feelings and desires, but do you necessarily have to fulfill these desires to live a normal life? I'd like to hear your opinions/views on the subject, so feel free to express yourself. Also, I apologize in advance for any misinterpretation from my side and also if I have unknowingly said something offensive to somebody. Just let me know if that is the case and I'll edit/remove it ASAP. EDIT: The concept of 'Love' which I am trying to refer to is best defined as, "a deep romantic or sexual attachment to (someone)."
  20. Hey guys!!! It's me, M&m_Fan99, back again with another discussion question!!! First of all long time no see/post as I have been busy with *stuff*, anyways lets dive straight in to this one! 21. The banana in question is around 19cms long (7.5 inches), and my friend spent 20 minutes in class eating it. Is he just a slow eater or is something wrong with him? Should I take him to the school sick room or a hospital? What are your thoughts? Leave them in the comment section below this forum post! As always looking forward to reading your responses IBSurvival members! Peace fofo.
  22. So during my english class it was recommended we look at various media in our spare time and try to decipher meanings and motives within the piece given its context. I really like this idea so i thought we as a collective should post a piece of (preferably short) media and then have a discussion of sorts. Here is a video i'd like to open this forum with:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-eAx3Dxpj4 this video is of relevance to me because the rapper lil' jon is from my home state atlanta also while im here i was thinking about the site name and this occurred to me: 1. ibsurvial 2. shorten to ibs 3. ibs - irritable bowel syndrome this train of thought triggered me to think of an ad i was saw inadvertently when watching some tv sent to me by my australian friend who goes by the screenname "FChaosi": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-eAx3Dxpj4 crazy how we make connections like that haha
  23. Hi Guys As you probably know, being an IB student, taking hard IB subjects (like literature, Hl math, physics or sciences) means quote heavy sleep deprivation and sleeping really little on a daily basis, even on weekends. I've gone many long nights doing work and I would stay up all night doing work if I could and weren't so tired during the day. All the lack of sleep made me think: Should we eliminate sleep in the future? I mean about 1/3 of all our life is devoted to sleep (8 hours a day average), so if scientists focus on a way so that we don't have to sleep any longer and don't have any negative consequences, it would be the equivalent of living about 30 years longer. Imagine how much more things you could do. Or even just reducing the amount of time the body needs for sleep? Should we try to eliminate sleep? What are your ideas on this? Thank you for your responses! -ncarmont
  24. Anyone have any ideas for Chemistry IA labs?
