  1. Hi IBSurvival Forum! As I am approaching my analysis portion of my research-based extended essay, I would be delighted to get some feeback on analysis I have planned and subsequent conclusion. Before I go into the main point of this post, my stubborn foolishness led me to stick to a Bio EE, and I would just like to say it is immensely difficult to write a biology extended essay that meets the IB requirement to a high standard. My supervisor happened to be the EE coordinator as well as my biology teacher and the essays she had supervised previously were all research-based essays. Out of the 13 she supervised, 5 got As and 4 got Bs. Hence, in her experiences, if a student had an above average aptitude in the biological sciences and were genuinely interested in the topic they were writing about, a research-based essay can succeed contrary to the popular belief. So my current topic is on the gene regulation in HIV proviral latencies, in specifics the epigenetic control of HIV genes. I am planning to compare two different epigenetic mechanisms (histone modification and DNA methylation) that have been hypothesized and shown to happen by different virologists and researchers, and, evaluate the effectiveness of each in gene silencing and activation using content from the Biology curriculum + additional knowledge. Finally, I would relate this back to HIV and whether one is indeed more effective than the other in the context of HIV latencies. Could I get any general feedback on this idea? Thank you in advance for any replies. ^.^ P.S. If you feel this is too brief, I would gladly PM or email the rest of what I have planned out.
  2. My EE was due a few days ago but I still can't help but think and worry about it. I wrote my EE within a couple of hours without discussing it with my supervisor because I had made a new one a few days before the final submission. I'm really stressed out at this point. I know I'm the only one to blame for doing this to myself but I DO NOT want an E on my EE. My word limit was 3.9k words, my essay was relevant to the proposed question, I followed a proper structure for my essay and referenced everything that had to be referenced yet I'm still scared because my analysis of the text is quite repetitive. I mean, the texts that I analysed had a few similar points that related to my question, but still. And I even did my font in calibri, 1.5 spaced and my table of content is size 16, and my referencing is a mixture of Harvard and Chicago fml. I don't know what to do at this point honestly, I screwed myself over and I'll have to wait a few months until I finish my exams and everything to see whether I failed. This stress caused by the EE would be biting me on the back during the exams and I'm afraid I won't be able to perform well. I already know what I want to do in Uni but this EE is really putting my hopes down. How likely is it for someone to fail the EE? And how exactly do you fail the EE? I'm like, really really really stressed out here.

    Physics EE

For my physics EE I decided to look at gravity and stability(my topic) and "how does the loading of a truck affects the shift of the central gravity and how that shift affects the tipping point of a truck if its in a stationary position?"(research question) . For my experiment I've used blocks of different masses that I placed on a aluminium platform using different variation. Where aluminium platform is like a truck platform and the blocks that I used act like loading. So basically I placed them in different ways and looked at the which angle each object will tip over. In my essay I will show how does the central gravity shifts and how it actually affects the tipping point. Furthermore, I want to convert the masses that I used into real life masses, to show that if the mass goes over the limit mass then its becomes dangerous. I am also connecting it to many real-life situations from Africa, where many trucks are overloaded and very often they tip over on the road. I will also explain how can suspension and speed decrease or increase the tipping point. Could someone give me any ides how I could improve my ideas or even my topic or research question, so my essay is not that broad. Thanks
  6. Hello I'm a new DP 1 student and I started looking for ideas for my EE. I decided to pursue chemistry as my subject and I have a solid topic in mind, but it's not wide enough. I'm going to investigate differents cuts of meat of different ages and I'll compare the values of protein and fats in each. What can I do else? And how can I make this a proper topic? What experiments can I execute? If you're not allowed to help me, just tell me how I can find the experiment needed... Thank you in advance.
  7. I chose bootstrapping in stats as my research topic and I've already done a bunch of research. Bootstrapping requires computer software to run, and so I'd been planning to use Python and some libraries to create a confidence interval. But when I checked the IB EE guide (https://www.shaker.org/downloads/ibextendedessayguide2018.pdf), I saw "Computer programs may only be included (in particular circumstances) in computer science and physics essays." I'm not sure what to do. My topic is quite clearly math, and I'm not sure I can switch it. Are there any exceptions to this rule about computer programs?
  8. Hello. I've been trying to find a topic and research question for my extended essay but I have been unable to do. I have found an experimental technique in the calorimeter which measures energy content/calories and I want to measure energy contents in different foods but I do not know what I should investigate specifically and expand on this. I don't want it to be as simple as "as x increases, y increases". Testing out different foods and seeing which one(s) have the higher calories is way too simple and I'm basically stuck..Please help!
  9. So I'm writing a Mini EE for Inquiry Skills, and I was wondering if one of these two questions was good? How have laws regarding homosexuals changed over time around the world? OR How does religion affect homosexual persecution around the world?
  10. Hello, I have been thinking about what I would like to do for my extended essay and I have come up with two ideas that I would like to share to you to ask for some advice about whether or not these are suitable for a possible EE in physics; The first idea is about the science behind projectiles where I was thinking about researching the science behind the centre of gravity and the centre of pressure while the rocket is in flight and how this can affect the stabilisation of it. However, my Physics teacher told me that it would be too difficult to measure which means that I had to do it with paper airplanes instead. my research question for this would have been something like; "In what ways does the position of the centre of pressure and centre of gravity affect the stability of a projectile rocket launched in the air?" OR "How is the stability of a projectile rocket affected by the position of the centre of pressure and centre off gravity as it is launched in the air?" Therefore, the second idea that came up was about doing it about angular momentum, and explain this while doing an experiment with a rotating bicycle wheel. This could be very interesting because I could look at how different mass and diameter of the wheel changes the amount of angular momentum it emits when rotated. Here my topic and research question will look at how the sizes of different rotating wheels affect the angular momentum of the person holding it in his hand; "How does the diameter of a wheel affect the angular momentum of a person sitting on a stool?" OR "In what ways does the radius of a wheel affect the angular momentum it’s acting on a person?" In my opinion, the second idea seems much more fun and interesting to do. What do you think, if you have some advice please tell me. Thank you!
  11. So, my EE's due tomorrow 11:59 p.m. I know it's pretty late but I have to do it. And I haven't done any of it yet. Luckily, I've got a semi-plan outline, which looks like a table of contents, but I just can't get started. Each time I think of starting, I fear that somewhere along I realize how crappy my essay is and might have to start from scratch. My essay's going to be a comparison essay between Siddhartha and lord of the Flies. I'm going to be exploring the theme 'ambition' in the essay. Do you guys think this is a good idea? or is there any other theme that might be easier to explore? another book i have is Macbeth, which I'm not using for the above mentioned theme but if you guys suggest a better one i can start from scratch since i don't have anything done anyway If you guys find that 'ambition' is an okay theme to explore in Siddhartha and Lord of the Flies, could you guys just me with where I could get sources for Siddhartha and ambition... or would Macbeth suit this theme more? by ambition in siddhartha, i meant like how he wants to find enlightenment and he goes to great extent to do so, giving up lots of thing, etc. So what d'you guy say? do i stick with ambition in lord of the flies and siddhartha or switch either the theme or the book (macbeth is my other choice)? if i stick with, where could i find for siddhartha? if i change the theme, which should i use? and don't be afraid to suggest some pretty big changes since i don't have anything anyway so i can always change it
  12. HI IM WRITING AN ENGLISH GROUP 3 EXTENDED ESSAY AND MY BROAD TOPIC IS GRETA THUNBERG SPEECHES. I have to come up with a list of 4-6 specificic subtopics to explore in my EE by tomorrow. Have any of yall written an EE about speeches?? Maybe I could compare her to someone else, but I don't know who? Would simply analyzing a few different famous speeches (like her ted talk, her un speech, EU speech, etc.) be enough??? PLEASE RESPOND IM VERY STRESSED RN
  13. Hi! My school just introduced me to EE and i really want to do philosophy, something about ethics and I would live to get some guidance and suggestions. So far I came up with this:
  14. Hey, My question for my extended is 'To what extent did the 2015 Volkswagen Emissions Scandal affect Volkswagen's Corporate Social Responsibility?'. My teacher keeps telling me to keep this research question even though I am not sure how exactly he wants me to evaluate how Corporate Social Responsibility changed after a scandal using business tools. Maybe someone could help me out with some tools : ). Thx in advance
  15. Hi. I am trying to do a EE about the economic effects that sports teams in California have on the state. Is my topic too broad? What economics concepts could I use other than taxation?
  16. Hey there, My EE is in Swedish B and I have my RQ as 'How does X Hip hop rapper from 1990s respective to X Hip hop rapper from 2010s use 'the sociolect' to clarify messages?' I tried translating it to English but instead of 'the sociolect' I have actually mentioned the sociolect itself and the rappers namnes as well. I decided to use 3 lyrics (as artifacts) of each rappers and I was supposed to analyse the vocabulary/word choices, then compare them. I have a total of 3 books to support me (excluding other internet resources), where one of them is a researcher into this specific sociolect and the other is a researcher of sociolinguists. My RQ is more appropriate for category 2b yet I keep finding myself confused on 'what type of analysis' this is expected to be if its 2b. Content analysis? Analytical analysis essay? To clarify my aim: The language/sociolect that is used is part of these rappers culture, so it should be relevant to Cat. 2b. Through the analysis, I aim to show the cultural nature of the rappers evidently through their word choices. Should I observe and choose words/phrases that reveal the attitude and every other cultural nature of the rappers culture or did I misunderstand something and losing focus on the category? Could you possibly provide me an example of how it could approximately be written like through a paragraph or essay sample? Cat 2b: The essay should be an analysis of a more general cultural nature but specific to a country or community where the language is spoken. Essays of a general cultural nature must be based on specific cultural artifacts. Would warmly appreciate any answers
  17. Hi, this is my first time creating a forum post and I might not be as specific or on topic as I need to be to get my points and thoughts across so please bear with me. Currently I am in the midst or writing the first draft for my Computer Science Extended Essay and I seem to have hit a snag. The Research Question I have come up with is: To what extent has Artificial Intelligence impacted the space exploration industry? I would appreciate it if anyone could answer a few of my concerns about my RQ: Is it too broad? If it is, how can I narrow it without changing too much, as I already put up my first reflection which includes my RQ. (Kind of rushed and got myself into trouble here) Also, are there any fresh or unique takes on this topic? All I seem to be able to think of are the basics. (I just really wanted to do my EE on AIs and now I regret being so adamant) Below are the Self-Reflections I have posted in the RRS to give you an idea of my direction: First: My main points of focus and essay outline are as follows: Introduction: Why AI's should be implemented or researched etc. How AI's imitate human behaviour: Mental Processes and Procedural thinking. Efficiency of algorithms: Analyse the Machine Learning Algorithm and improve on efficiency if possible. Why AI's are suitable for use in space: Benefits and Drawbacks. Two current uses of AI in space: Rovers (AEGIS) and Environmental Maintenance (BioSphere). Possible future uses: Extraterrestrial exploration, Interplanetary travel (Passengers). Conclusion: To what extent has Artificial Intelligence impacted the space exploration industry? Second: Outline of Introduction: Context: Artificial Intelligence is an industry in itself as there are various uses for a technology which can simulate human behaviour however this also means that it can be used in various other industries. One such industry which has a potentially bright future for Artificial Intelligence technology is the Space Exploration industry, which has already implemented a few AIs and is planning to upgrade and implement more. Outline of Argument: This essay seeks to analyse the core function of AIs and how and why they are useful in the Space Exploration Industry. Scope: The essay will also include a couple examples of present uses of AIs in Space Exploration along with an analysis into their limitations and possible adjustments to make them more self-sufficient as Space requires largely self sufficient mechanisms or environments due to the amount of time it takes to communicate with Earth from distances further than the moon. Worthiness of investigation: This research question is worthy of investigation because it is a potential turning point in both the development of Artificial Intelligence technology and the advancement of Space Exploration (and its technology) to grander heights and it could be one of the keys to travelling to further distances physically. And honestly this is as far as I have gotten, except for a few lines into the actual Introduction. Is this a good start? Or do I need something a little more interesting or important? Any additional advice or constructive criticism which is not a direct answer to any of my questions will also be appreciated and considered. Thank you for your time.
  18. Hi! I'm doing my EE on biology secondary research and struggled looking for samples or direct guidance at all so I mainly relied on the IB EE guide book. I've summarized the key points they mentioned for Bio and another summary under the actual text because the other summary I originally made was still too long. (yes. it's that wordy.) so there are two summaries, you could say. Most of what they say are a bit repetitive so I will be posting another clearer version of this once im done with my finals on thursday. If you guys want, I can also change it to a checklist format to make it easier. Hope it helps! BIO EE CRITERIA.docx
  19. Hey there, I have just met with my supervisor for the EE and he told me to fix my research question by making it clearer for the examinor to understand what I will be discussing in my essay. Here's my RQ: I tried my best to convey what I want to talk about in the essay but he told me that I need to use better words to clarify this part "work independently in their own context". I want to say that both books are meant for different audiences from different fields (one's for a poet, and the other is for the son of the writer talking about modern problems). What can I write to convey what I want to say in the clearest way possible? Thank you in advance
  20. I was wondering why their example is within their expectations , but seemingly does not fit the criteria? they state: "2(a): Essays of a sociocultural nature about the impact of a cultural change on language The essay should consist of a cultural analysis of the impact of a particular issue on the form or use of the language." example given : "The effects of globalization on language and social media in the Middle East" golablisation being a big topic affecting many countries I dont understand how it fits within their criteria A : "For category 1 (language) and category 2 (culture and society) essays, the introduction must make clear how the chosen topic is specific or of special interest to the target culture and/or language . Overly broad topics on society, social movements or general media issues should be avoided." I was hoping to write an Essay about how Climate Change changed the usage of the english language by media/Brands in England, now I am not sure if this would fail criteria A. Is that still possible or is my "particular issue" not related closely enough to British culture ?
  21. Hello everyone, I have to propose EE topics in a few different subjects in a couple of days and I'm struggling a bit. I've narrowed down my subjects to ESS, Biology and Chem, I just don't know whether the topics are too broad. I was considering writing about the following for each subject: For ESS, the effectiveness of a specific species different conversation efforts For Biology, the buildup of micro-plastics in organisms through the tropic levels (idk for sure what experiment i could do) For Chemistry, the water quality of two different bodies of water by my house and its effect on biodiversity I'm open to change, so feel free to reply with any questions, comments, or concerns, all input is appreciated!
  22. I am writing my Extended Essay trying to analyse the economic activity during Indian Demonetisation, did it serve its purpose? Because after it happened, people shifted to cashless payment, but when cash came in the economy, they quickly shifted back to cash. I wanted to analyse why did that happen, could you give me any tips? If you have any suggestions on any other way to approach the Indian Demonetisation scenario, that would be nice.
  23. My subject for the EE is chemistry, and I was wondering how far I can stretch that subject to apply to other subjects. My main idea is that I should study how cottonmouth venom is synthesized into an antivenom. The final topic is due tomorrow. However, there are a lot of problems with this topic. First of all, my TOK teacher (not my subject supervisor) told me that this topic leans too heavily into biology, but he isn’t the best resource on scientific EEs, which he admitted to me personally. Second of all, venom is a toxic chemical. Am I allowed to study this, even though I don’t plan to do am experiment myself? The subject says explicitly that toxic and dangerous chemicals are prohibited, but I’m unsure if that applies only to personally-conducted experiments, or to the topic in general. Lastly, I can’t do my own experiment in this topic, obviously. Will this cause me to lose points? These are my main problems/ questions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
  24. I'm really struggling to figure out an EE topic for this subject. I wanted to do my EE on greek mythology but all the topics I come up with are too broad and I can't seem to narrow it down. Plus, I'm still a bit confused about the requirements for the EE in this subject because it's not offered at my school, I have a mentor who has taught some Greek but they aren't really around much. I'm worried that I might do the EE entirely wrong and I'm still not entirely sure if i needed to know greek or latin in order to actually do this subject. I just really need some help in narrowing it down and if anyone did this subject for their EEs (probably not but worth a shot) advice would be appreciated Heres the syllabus for the EE http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b865/media/extendedessay09/09ClassicalGreekandLatin.htm
  25. Hey all, just hoping to get some help regarding my extended essay topic. I'm currently doing my extended essay research question on To What Extent Did the American Red Cross Impact World War One Europe? I've been ok-ed by my teachers for this topic and have been chugging along. I just got my hands on the extended essay guide course companion book and read through some parts, and looked around online for additional information. My problem is I'm starting to think my topic can't really be looked at from other angles. All my research blatantly shows they had a large impact, how would I argue against that or view it from another angle? I was thinking about maybe writing something about how they compared to other humanitarian aid organizations in that area, maybe find some information on how they did stacked up to others? I'm really not sure so I'm hoping some smart people here can give me some guidance. If possible I'd rather not overhaul my EE topic to something super different as I've already sunk 10 hours into this, and don't want it to be for nothing. Thanks!
