  1. Right. So. I have the essay. It's around 3500 words at the moment which is pretty great because I have space for this, but my supervisor told me to completely re-do my introduction. I get why and I have a plan on what to include in it, I just can't come up with a way to start the introduction. So I'm literally stuck on the first sentence of my EE. I'd like to ask if anyone could share the first one or two sentences of their EEs, it'd help lots for some inspiration! If it's of any interest, my research question is "How does the sociocultural context affect the development of mental illness in [novel 1] and [novel 2]?" and I'm focusing on the aspects of family and friends (close circle), medical professionals at psychiatric hospitals, and the culture at large. Thanks in advance
  2. Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has good structures of writing paragraphs for both HL English papers?
  3. Hey! I was wondering if anyone has the Prescribed List of Authors (PLA) and the Prescribed List of Translations (PLT) for English A: Language and Literature? Our English teacher left the school very suddenly, and we currently have no English teacher to turn to for any resources as of yet (I'm in DP 2)! I was hoping to get a head start on figuring out the subject myself, and it would be very helpful if I could get these two documents. I've been trying to find them online, but I can't seem to locate the files. Also, if you have any tips to learning English A: Lang & Lit, or just general tips for the IOC, FOA, Written Task or tests in general they will be more than appreciated!
  4. Hey, Anyone starting IB 1 in September 2019, what are your choices? I'm taking: HL Music HL English Literature HL History SL Maths SL Italian SL Physics
  5. how can i analyze a science fiction fantasy novel for my extended essay and what do i analyze exactly? Need help!
  6. I have an essay due soon. I basically have to write about Tom from the Great Gatsby. What do i need to know about him? Give me as much information as possible, and your thoughts on him. What is his role? Purpose? Maybe a bit of context (his past)? All help is appreciated.
  7. This is quite a long story but I'm going to make it as short as possible. So when I first got my EE form, I put English Literature as my subject and put my two suggested supervisors who are both familiar with the subject. However, I was given a completely different supervisor who bases her teaching on VA. Though she told me I can focus on any subject like History, English or VA since she majors on them on the first meeting I had with her. Moreover, the DP Coordinator a few months ago, asked what subject my EE was and I said English whilst I had already submitted a VA EE. I don't really know why I did that, I just didn't have a proper RQ at the time and my supervisor barely gave me any advice so I just went along with it so I could at least provide the EE Coordinator with some essay for the draft. But when I received the feedback for my VA EE, my SP literally made me change the whole focus of my research question, so I have to basically restart again before the final submission in four days. Instead of doing it on VA, I went back to my original EE subject which was on English Literature. I'm a lot more comfortable on basing my EE on English since I'm not very familiar with Art terms as much as I am with literary techniques. But the problem is that my supervisor is refusing to give me feedback on the topic because she claims she already gave her form in and it was based on my VA EE AND now she apparently can't mark my English EE because she hasn't taught English in her life before. (literally, the other person who has her for a SP did it on English?!?!?) Now the DP & EE Coordinator want me to stick with my VA EE and give the fees to change my registration from English to a VA EE. Like, I understand I made a mistake by submitting a VA EE when I wrote English down, but can't they just accept my new English EE and forget about the rest? I still have a few days to receive feedback, I don't really see what their issue is. So idk, I'm really confused. Should I just continue with making a new VA EE or just keep pestering them to accept my new English EE? My English teacher is willing to give me feedback for it, anyways. I seriously don't have time to fix the VA EE anymore, but with English, I'm a LOT more comfortable and confident doing it. Also, is it actually a rule to pay a fee of $500 to change the subject registration sent to the IB? My school insists that I pay for it.
  8. Hey, I am currently in Grade 10 doing my MYP at an International School in Germany. I joined the IB system in January 2018 (which means I am at the school for 1 1/2 years now). Right at the beginning, I was offered to go to the English A course, however, I chose not to because I wanted to focus on the other subjects as everything was in a different language (used to study at a German School). After I finished 9th grade, (transferred into 10th) my English teacher offered me to move up again, but my family situation is quite tricky, so I missed the deadline and therefore stayed in English B ): A few months into 10th grade, I finally decided to talk to my English teacher and the DP coordinator to switch, but they told me it is not possible during the year so I stayed. I am thinking about moving, and therefore I would need to go to a different school (also IBDP) but they don't offer German A which is why I would need to move up to English A and take German as a second language (self-taught only offered as SL). My question is whether or not it is still possible to change from English B to English A, right before the DP. Thanks in advance!
  9. So I just had my 11DP mock exams and I got a 5 in my English compare and contrast essay. I don't feel totally disappointed, but I feel like I can get a better grade if I just knew how to improve myself. My teacher doesn't really teach us anything :)))) like what to do differently. I can't get a copy of the mock paper to post here, but in general, do you guys have any tips? I would like to see myself doing better in the future.
  10. Hey guys, Today I got the results for my IOC (English A lang and lit SL). My teacher graded it 19/30. Is it good? What grade can I get for May 2020 Session? What can I do if I don't agree with the teacher's grade? Thank you!
  11. HEY GUYS THIS IS AN S.O.S SITUATION!!! Do any of you know how magical realism in chronicle of a death foretold is able to convey the fact that the truth is invariably impossible to know? As of right now, I only have 2 quotations and i'm really lost as well.
  12. I am an Australian and American citizen studying in HK and I am interested in universities in Australia and the UK. Do I need IELTS for that?
  13. Hi, I'm planning to write my EE based on my English B subject. I'm actually having quite a hard time forming a solid question, but I've thought of a couple of topics. - the book "No Longer Human" by Dazai Osamu. I could talk about how the author showcases the struggle of the main character, a social outcast, trying to fit in the society, before he decided to commit suicide. -"Animal Farm/1984" by George Orwell and how it reflects the modern society/government. Since I'm living in Thailand I'd mainly focus on the Thai politics. -How mental illness was portrayed by the show "13 reasons why," and what impact it may have on the viewers. These are the topics I've thought about so far. I really want to start my EE as soon as possible, but I'm still not confident about my research questions/topics. Please take some time to help me out. Thanks.

  15. Hi, I had planned to pretend to interview Bob Marley to ask about his attitude towards English, creoles and pidgins, and linguistic imperialism. The issue is that I am supposed to show how his use of language express his identity and he speaks in Jamaican English, so I am supposed to write his answers for the interview in Jamaican English too? Any ideas if I have understood this correctly? I would really appreciate any help!
  16. Good day, I have to perform an FOA and I decided to use the Malala speech to analyse. I have been confused to whether this is linked to part 1 or part 2 of the course. So which part of the course would this particular FOA idea be more relevant to link to? Is the analysis of a speech supposed to be for part 1 or part 2 of the course? With which learning outcomes and topic (possibly)?
  17. Ok so, I'm writing my EE in English Literature A HL, but I'm really clueless as to what book to analyse. I was thinking to do something with Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, because I think it's a good example of a classic that hasn't been completely picked apart and turned inside out by every English student ever (like shakespeare or Emily Brontë). However, I'm finding it really hard to know where to start. If any of you are familiar with Cat's Cradle or Kurt Vonnegut's work, please send me some ideas/things to keep in mind if you have any tips. Are there any other books/authors with in a similar style that you think would work better? I just need all the help that I can get.
  18. For Paper 2 in English A Lang & Lit HL, my class studied multiple poems written by Philip Larkin and Murakami's "Kafka on the Shore". My question is: in Paper 2, we have to refer to two texts that we have studied in class, so, if I choose to cover "Kafka on the Shore" and Larkin, should I talk about only one of his poems? Or can I talk about a number of his poems?
  19. Which subject do you think is easier, English Language & Literature HL or History HL? My other subjects: HL: Math - Economics - English Lang & Lit / History SL: French ab initio - Biology - English Lang & Lit / History I had recently read from a lot of discussions that History HL is considered to be one of the HARDEST subjects of the IB, and with my subject combination already including Math HL (possibly the hardest subject), I am worried about the heavy workload I am going to face next year. The reason why I'm deciding wether I should choose either History or English at HL, it's due to the requirement that I need at least one essay subject HL for my future degree. So between English Lang & Lit and History HL, which one do you think is the easier one? Thanks in advance!
  20. So I am writing a pastiche and trying to imitate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's style, and not sure how to write a good rationale. Could anyone give some tips because I know this is very important.
  21. Hey guys! My class recently did a few in-class Paper 1 samples, and I did absolutely horribly in them! I seem to always get the wrong main idea and impression of the poem that we get, and the teacher told me they were not convinced by the examples I used to back-up my main idea. So I was wondering! Does anyone have any tips for analyzing poems you have never seen before? I already am aware of the "Read the poem at least 3 times before analyzing" rule! What can I do to be as close as possible to the real main idea? Are there any works that you guys can recommend me to read to gain a better insight of poem analysis in English A Literature and Language? (I'm HL, btw!)
  22. I have a few more days until I have to decide on my Extended essay topic. I am torn between choosing Business (HL) or English (SL), but I'm not sure if I can do my extended essay for an SL class. I most likely want to study Business or marketing in university; however, I just thought about a really interesting idea for an extended essay that only applies to my English Lang&Lit subject. I know it'll be better for me to pick Business as that is the direction I want to go towards to in the future, but I feel like I will be way more interested in writing my extended essay in English.

    EE HELP

Hello, I'm half way through my first year in the DP and I'm still struggling to find an interesting topic for EE on English. I wanted to take a look at The Great Gatsby, The Yellow Wallpaper or The Lord of the Flies but my sister recommended me not to do so because these texts are studied throughout the years of IB and the markers would expect an exceptional outcome towards the essay; essentially making it a little difficult for me to ace. I'm currently reading about Burmese Days by George Orwell, it talks a lot about gender, race, culture, imperialism and etc. but I'm not too sure if I'll be sticking to this one. My only option now is to take a look at other novels that perhaps incorporate politics or feminism (I feel like they'll be easier to deal with???). So, I was hoping if you guys could give me some advice on the EE and some novels I could take a look at
  24. Hi, I want to write my extended essay for English B, and my topic is about the book and the film "Gone with the wind", I choose it because I love this book and I read it for several times. I have a research question: To what extent does Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell show the theme of racism in US culture? But I'm not sure this is good enough or not to discuss and since I'm not from the US, I don't really know the American culture. I also want to talk about the sexism, do you think talk about sexism is better than racism? OR DO I NEED TO CHANGE TO A BETTER RESEARCH QUESTION? please help me to value, thank u and love u guys!
