    Help needed!

I have an essay due soon. I basically have to write about Tom from the Great Gatsby. What do i need to know about him? Give me as much information as possible, and your thoughts on him. What is his role? Purpose? Maybe a bit of context (his past)? All help is appreciated.
  2. So I just had my 11DP mock exams and I got a 5 in my English compare and contrast essay. I don't feel totally disappointed, but I feel like I can get a better grade if I just knew how to improve myself. My teacher doesn't really teach us anything :)))) like what to do differently. I can't get a copy of the mock paper to post here, but in general, do you guys have any tips? I would like to see myself doing better in the future.
  3. Hey guys, Today I got the results for my IOC (English A lang and lit SL). My teacher graded it 19/30. Is it good? What grade can I get for May 2020 Session? What can I do if I don't agree with the teacher's grade? Thank you!
  4. HEY GUYS THIS IS AN S.O.S SITUATION!!! Do any of you know how magical realism in chronicle of a death foretold is able to convey the fact that the truth is invariably impossible to know? As of right now, I only have 2 quotations and i'm really lost as well.
  5. I am an Australian and American citizen studying in HK and I am interested in universities in Australia and the UK. Do I need IELTS for that?
  6. Hi, I'm planning to write my EE based on my English B subject. I'm actually having quite a hard time forming a solid question, but I've thought of a couple of topics. - the book "No Longer Human" by Dazai Osamu. I could talk about how the author showcases the struggle of the main character, a social outcast, trying to fit in the society, before he decided to commit suicide. -"Animal Farm/1984" by George Orwell and how it reflects the modern society/government. Since I'm living in Thailand I'd mainly focus on the Thai politics. -How mental illness was portrayed by the show "13 reasons why," and what impact it may have on the viewers. These are the topics I've thought about so far. I really want to start my EE as soon as possible, but I'm still not confident about my research questions/topics. Please take some time to help me out. Thanks.

  8. Hi, I had planned to pretend to interview Bob Marley to ask about his attitude towards English, creoles and pidgins, and linguistic imperialism. The issue is that I am supposed to show how his use of language express his identity and he speaks in Jamaican English, so I am supposed to write his answers for the interview in Jamaican English too? Any ideas if I have understood this correctly? I would really appreciate any help!
  9. Good day, I have to perform an FOA and I decided to use the Malala speech to analyse. I have been confused to whether this is linked to part 1 or part 2 of the course. So which part of the course would this particular FOA idea be more relevant to link to? Is the analysis of a speech supposed to be for part 1 or part 2 of the course? With which learning outcomes and topic (possibly)?
  10. Ok so, I'm writing my EE in English Literature A HL, but I'm really clueless as to what book to analyse. I was thinking to do something with Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, because I think it's a good example of a classic that hasn't been completely picked apart and turned inside out by every English student ever (like shakespeare or Emily Brontë). However, I'm finding it really hard to know where to start. If any of you are familiar with Cat's Cradle or Kurt Vonnegut's work, please send me some ideas/things to keep in mind if you have any tips. Are there any other books/authors with in a similar style that you think would work better? I just need all the help that I can get.
  11. For Paper 2 in English A Lang & Lit HL, my class studied multiple poems written by Philip Larkin and Murakami's "Kafka on the Shore". My question is: in Paper 2, we have to refer to two texts that we have studied in class, so, if I choose to cover "Kafka on the Shore" and Larkin, should I talk about only one of his poems? Or can I talk about a number of his poems?
  12. Which subject do you think is easier, English Language & Literature HL or History HL? My other subjects: HL: Math - Economics - English Lang & Lit / History SL: French ab initio - Biology - English Lang & Lit / History I had recently read from a lot of discussions that History HL is considered to be one of the HARDEST subjects of the IB, and with my subject combination already including Math HL (possibly the hardest subject), I am worried about the heavy workload I am going to face next year. The reason why I'm deciding wether I should choose either History or English at HL, it's due to the requirement that I need at least one essay subject HL for my future degree. So between English Lang & Lit and History HL, which one do you think is the easier one? Thanks in advance!
  13. Hey guys! My class recently did a few in-class Paper 1 samples, and I did absolutely horribly in them! I seem to always get the wrong main idea and impression of the poem that we get, and the teacher told me they were not convinced by the examples I used to back-up my main idea. So I was wondering! Does anyone have any tips for analyzing poems you have never seen before? I already am aware of the "Read the poem at least 3 times before analyzing" rule! What can I do to be as close as possible to the real main idea? Are there any works that you guys can recommend me to read to gain a better insight of poem analysis in English A Literature and Language? (I'm HL, btw!)
  14. What are the conventions/features of a military recruitment poster?
  15. I have a few more days until I have to decide on my Extended essay topic. I am torn between choosing Business (HL) or English (SL), but I'm not sure if I can do my extended essay for an SL class. I most likely want to study Business or marketing in university; however, I just thought about a really interesting idea for an extended essay that only applies to my English Lang&Lit subject. I know it'll be better for me to pick Business as that is the direction I want to go towards to in the future, but I feel like I will be way more interested in writing my extended essay in English.

    EE HELP

Hello, I'm half way through my first year in the DP and I'm still struggling to find an interesting topic for EE on English. I wanted to take a look at The Great Gatsby, The Yellow Wallpaper or The Lord of the Flies but my sister recommended me not to do so because these texts are studied throughout the years of IB and the markers would expect an exceptional outcome towards the essay; essentially making it a little difficult for me to ace. I'm currently reading about Burmese Days by George Orwell, it talks a lot about gender, race, culture, imperialism and etc. but I'm not too sure if I'll be sticking to this one. My only option now is to take a look at other novels that perhaps incorporate politics or feminism (I feel like they'll be easier to deal with???). So, I was hoping if you guys could give me some advice on the EE and some novels I could take a look at
  17. Hi, I want to write my extended essay for English B, and my topic is about the book and the film "Gone with the wind", I choose it because I love this book and I read it for several times. I have a research question: To what extent does Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell show the theme of racism in US culture? But I'm not sure this is good enough or not to discuss and since I'm not from the US, I don't really know the American culture. I also want to talk about the sexism, do you think talk about sexism is better than racism? OR DO I NEED TO CHANGE TO A BETTER RESEARCH QUESTION? please help me to value, thank u and love u guys!

    psychological setting

Hey guys, working on my works in translation ( for final hand in to IB). In class, we talked about psychological setting briefly when discussing short stories. It was basically tone, mood and atmosphere. But im unsure because we only touched upon it. However, in my essay, I want to use it. I searched it up to clarify the meaning of this type of setting but can't find anything. Do you guys know what psychological setting is in literature? I want to know for sure. Thanks!
  21. For my IOP (Individual Oral Presentation) in English, I am doing Oedipus Rex. My topic is irony, specifically dramatic/situational and literary irony. There are lots of examples of them in the text. 1) What would be a good thesis statement? What should I focus on? 2) How do these types of irony affect the reader? 3) What is the purpose of having them in the text? Any greater implications/ extensions? 4) Is this a good topic even?:) Thank you so much!

    extended essay worry!!

Hey everyone I'm just here to release my thoughts and worries cause they're just building up and get some advice (hopefully from people who have already finished IB or people who are going through the same thing) I just gave in my extended essay on literature and I'm kind of freaking out. I wrote it over the summer to save me time from worrying about it last minute and finished it by being told that we had to cite anything we PARAPHRASED. I did not know this. Therefore, I went back, changed and cited all the things that I KNOW weren't my ideas but I guess I was kinda lucky since most of it was all mine anyway. What I'm scared of, however, is I'm writing it on a very popular book with very similar opinions on it. I'm worried that something I wrote would be similar to something someone else wrote online even though I didn't take anything from it. I'm also very worried that I missed something whilst referencing. I know damn well I didn't copy anything word for word besides quotes and tried to cite everything I took from online. Our school still haven't run anything through turn it in or wtv but I'm hoping they would notify us if anything looks unusual. I just need advice cause I'm really not in the mood to lose my diploma over something that I didn't even intend on happening.
  23. 24. Hi, I am struggling with getting all 3 marks with the reflective statement. My teacher keeps telling me that I should add more points, but I find it especially hard since theres a 300-400 words limit. Does anyone have advice on how to get all 3 marks while staying in the word limit?
  25. Hi, guys. My EE topic due date is like literally tomorrow, so I really need major suggestions by people. (I have ideas below.) I'm taking English A SL, but I'm considering to take Category 3 English Extended Essay. Are there any other people who are in the same situation as me? Taking English EE but it's not their HL subject? I approached and talked to my English teacher / English Supervisor today and like they kinda don't recommend me to do it because my English language proficiency need to be Very high, especially when the markers are Native English speakers, so they'd expect so highly in terms of the language use, etc... But, like my situation is so complicated. Actually my first choice is supposed to be Economics EE, but until now I haven't got any idea to link my interests (K-Pop) to an economic theory, and it's literally tomorrow... I mean I kinda have a rough RQ for that one, but I don't know if it uses a lot of economic theory... So, I still have to find one in case my English EE really gets rejected, but it's really tough when I can't think of an economic theory. But anyways, if I were to do an English EE, I wanted to analyse various songs by this particular Korean boy band (BTS) and how it reflects the conditions in Korea as well as how they have influenced the society in the world, which is through their lyrics. (I can tell you my exact RQ through PM.) I thought it was a good idea at first and I can personally envision myself enjoying when writing it (well at least compared to Econs) I think, plus my EE coordinator (which is also my EE Econs supervisor) strongly encourage students, encouraged me, to do an EE on something I'm passionate about. But, right now, I don't know if this is a good idea for an English EE anymore because my English EE supervisor wasn't convinced, like they have to see if my English proficiency is high enough (but I'm actually not quite confident in that, I just really like the topic that I've thought on), whether analysing songs would reach 4000 words, and whether the topic is good enough, etc. So I'm going here to hopefully be able to see people's thoughts on my situation. So, please, please, please help me, just throw in your thoughts or like anything, what do you guys think about it? Do you guys think it's not doable too? Thank you so much!
