  1. Hi IBSurvival Forum! As I am approaching my analysis portion of my research-based extended essay, I would be delighted to get some feeback on analysis I have planned and subsequent conclusion. Before I go into the main point of this post, my stubborn foolishness led me to stick to a Bio EE, and I would just like to say it is immensely difficult to write a biology extended essay that meets the IB requirement to a high standard. My supervisor happened to be the EE coordinator as well as my biology teacher and the essays she had supervised previously were all research-based essays. Out of the 13 she supervised, 5 got As and 4 got Bs. Hence, in her experiences, if a student had an above average aptitude in the biological sciences and were genuinely interested in the topic they were writing about, a research-based essay can succeed contrary to the popular belief. So my current topic is on the gene regulation in HIV proviral latencies, in specifics the epigenetic control of HIV genes. I am planning to compare two different epigenetic mechanisms (histone modification and DNA methylation) that have been hypothesized and shown to happen by different virologists and researchers, and, evaluate the effectiveness of each in gene silencing and activation using content from the Biology curriculum + additional knowledge. Finally, I would relate this back to HIV and whether one is indeed more effective than the other in the context of HIV latencies. Could I get any general feedback on this idea? Thank you in advance for any replies. ^.^ P.S. If you feel this is too brief, I would gladly PM or email the rest of what I have planned out.
  2. My EE was due a few days ago but I still can't help but think and worry about it. I wrote my EE within a couple of hours without discussing it with my supervisor because I had made a new one a few days before the final submission. I'm really stressed out at this point. I know I'm the only one to blame for doing this to myself but I DO NOT want an E on my EE. My word limit was 3.9k words, my essay was relevant to the proposed question, I followed a proper structure for my essay and referenced everything that had to be referenced yet I'm still scared because my analysis of the text is quite repetitive. I mean, the texts that I analysed had a few similar points that related to my question, but still. And I even did my font in calibri, 1.5 spaced and my table of content is size 16, and my referencing is a mixture of Harvard and Chicago fml. I don't know what to do at this point honestly, I screwed myself over and I'll have to wait a few months until I finish my exams and everything to see whether I failed. This stress caused by the EE would be biting me on the back during the exams and I'm afraid I won't be able to perform well. I already know what I want to do in Uni but this EE is really putting my hopes down. How likely is it for someone to fail the EE? And how exactly do you fail the EE? I'm like, really really really stressed out here.
  3. Hello! I'm planning on doing my extended essay on English Literature but I don't have any books or question yet. I am interested in American literature in the 20th century and I'm hoping I can talk about something from then. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  4. So for my E.E I am doing it on promotional strategies of BTS, which is a boy band. My research question is "How has the use of social media influenced the promotional strategies of BTS?" Is this a weak research question?
  5. Hey everyone, I'm in my first year of DP and I kindly request your advice. My school has set the deadline for our extended essays by the end of summer and hence, I have to come up with a research topic. I'm planning to go into IT after I graduate(hopefully) and I would like to use ITGS as my topic idea for the Extended Essay. However, I have not opted to take ITGS and I am concerned whether I can do an extended essay on it and still get an 'A'. I also take economics SL and I'm very interested in it as well. I was wondering if I can't do the essay on ITGS, could I link both subjects somehow? Thanks, guys.

    Physics EE

For my physics EE I decided to look at gravity and stability(my topic) and "how does the loading of a truck affects the shift of the central gravity and how that shift affects the tipping point of a truck if its in a stationary position?"(research question) . For my experiment I've used blocks of different masses that I placed on a aluminium platform using different variation. Where aluminium platform is like a truck platform and the blocks that I used act like loading. So basically I placed them in different ways and looked at the which angle each object will tip over. In my essay I will show how does the central gravity shifts and how it actually affects the tipping point. Furthermore, I want to convert the masses that I used into real life masses, to show that if the mass goes over the limit mass then its becomes dangerous. I am also connecting it to many real-life situations from Africa, where many trucks are overloaded and very often they tip over on the road. I will also explain how can suspension and speed decrease or increase the tipping point. Could someone give me any ides how I could improve my ideas or even my topic or research question, so my essay is not that broad. Thanks
  7. Hi everyone! Does anyone know the official IB deadlines for submission of IA's and Extended Essay?

  9. I want to do something like: assess the role of exercise in the rehabilitation of teens recovering from substance abuse. I have found a few studies about it and I really like the topic, I just don't know how "psychology" it actually is. I also want to make sure that this is an okay thing to talk about in an essay. If anyone else has any ideas please let me know. Thanks!
  10. Hi all. I'm planning on doing an EE in English, category 1. What are your thoughts on my RQ- at the moment my biggest concern is that it might be too descriptive rather than analytical, in terms of language. How does delusion influence characters' motives and perceptions of reality in Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things? My supervisor actually advised me to do something along the lines of the question above. However, I originally planned on doing the question below, but she advised that there may not be enough to talk about. What are your thoughts? Is the question above acceptable? How is delusion portrayed through symbolism and motifs in Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things?
  11. Hi, I am deciding my topics for the extended essay in chemistry and was thinking of doing something around -: - The effect of pH on the hydrolysis of aspirin or - The most effective endothermic reactions to be used in instant cold packs. (currently used water and ammonia) Please give me feedback as to how I could improve my topics and any changes that I could make to make it more suitable to the real world.
  12. I chose bootstrapping in stats as my research topic and I've already done a bunch of research. Bootstrapping requires computer software to run, and so I'd been planning to use Python and some libraries to create a confidence interval. But when I checked the IB EE guide (https://www.shaker.org/downloads/ibextendedessayguide2018.pdf), I saw "Computer programs may only be included (in particular circumstances) in computer science and physics essays." I'm not sure what to do. My topic is quite clearly math, and I'm not sure I can switch it. Are there any exceptions to this rule about computer programs?
  13. I have a topic idea, but am seeking advice as well as help forming a question. I plan on researching the effect bilingual education (second language acquisition?) has on childhood development within psychology. I plan to look specifically on education and brain development. First off, does that seem like a possible topic? I've never taken a psychology class, and my school does not offer DP psych. Any advice on how to approach it in a psychology standpoint would be very appreciated! Secondly, I need help refining a question. I think I will word it as: To what extent does second language acquisition affect childhood development? or something like that. I'm having trouble coming up with question starters other than "what" or "to what extent". Again, any advice is appreciated! Thanks!!
  14. Hi all, I need some help coming up with an RQ. 16. Hey! I have decided to do my extended essay in English Lang & Lit, i have decided my topic and the novel i'm gonna analyse. I was thinking of the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and i wanted to explore the topic of obsession and the way obsession is portrayed by the characters in the novel or the way the author incorporated obsession in the novel and its accuracy, considering the time this book was written. what do you guys think about the topic and the choice of this novel ? All help is useful ! 🙂
  17. Hi all! I am planning on doing an Extended Essay on English A, but I am a bit unsure of what is expected of us in the research process. I'm aware that we are supposed to research some literary criticism/critiques from others, but is this all research in an English A EE entails? Should we also read other works by the author, even if they aren't works we said we'll discuss in our research question? Any other advice on what makes effective research in an English A EE would be appreciated.
  18. Hey. This is my first time posting, so hopefully someone can help me out here. I've just got my Extended Essay proposal back from my supervisor, and she flat out rejected it and said that I need to get something else to write about. The topic of my essay is "To what extent did aviation affect the outcome of WW2?". I would like to write about something regarding aviation and/or the second world war, but there is a lot of pre-existing research on the topic, so it's difficult to find something original to do and I also need to find something that presents an argument, which is a bit difficult because history is pretty straight-forward (to me at least). Can someone help me find something interesting to write about and make suggestions as to how to narrow down my research question and make it argumentative? Thanks in advance, --A Drooling Failure
  19. Hello, do you think my EE question is good or do I have to make some changes? "To what extent does Apolipoprotein E (APOE) affect Alzheimer's disease?" I would love your feedback, thank you.
  20. Hello everyone. I have received my IB results, and unfortunately, the only thing standing between me and the 45 score is the EE/TOK. I have scored 7s in all my subjects, but B/B in TOK/EE. I am 4 marks away from the A in each one. Is it likely that remarking works with these two subjects? And which one do you recommend that I remark? I just need an A in either to get the 3 total bonus marks and thus a 45. Thank you
  21. Hi all. For my Physics EE, I am hoping to do an experiment that relates my IV with my DV, and comparing the relationship I find in my experiments to a theoretical relationship defined by an equation. My only problem is, this experiment is not uncommon, and is frequently done (thankfully, it is usually done at university level, but it's actually quite simple). I'm worried that I will get marked down for a lack of creativity, so I tried to add a twist to my experiment, and show how the theoretical relationship isn't always accurate in all situations, and altering one of my other variables to make the theory more valid. How does this sound? Will I get marked down harshly due to a lack of originality? I'm really desperate for some help, anything is appreciated!
  22. Hi, My EE is in Swedish B and I have my RQ as 'How does X Hip hop rapper from 1990s respective to X Hip hop rapper from 2010s use 'the sociolect' to clarify messages?'. Is this question appropriate for category 2b?
  23. So, I decided to do my EE on distillation, but I'm not able to come up with a good research question on simple distillation (fractional would also work). I would really appreciate certain examples for the research question on distillation. Thanks!!
  24. Hi, this is my first time creating a forum post and I might not be as specific or on topic as I need to be to get my points and thoughts across so please bear with me. Currently I am in the midst or writing the first draft for my Computer Science Extended Essay and I seem to have hit a snag. The Research Question I have come up with is: To what extent has Artificial Intelligence impacted the space exploration industry? I would appreciate it if anyone could answer a few of my concerns about my RQ: Is it too broad? If it is, how can I narrow it without changing too much, as I already put up my first reflection which includes my RQ. (Kind of rushed and got myself into trouble here) Also, are there any fresh or unique takes on this topic? All I seem to be able to think of are the basics. (I just really wanted to do my EE on AIs and now I regret being so adamant) Below are the Self-Reflections I have posted in the RRS to give you an idea of my direction: First: My main points of focus and essay outline are as follows: Introduction: Why AI's should be implemented or researched etc. How AI's imitate human behaviour: Mental Processes and Procedural thinking. Efficiency of algorithms: Analyse the Machine Learning Algorithm and improve on efficiency if possible. Why AI's are suitable for use in space: Benefits and Drawbacks. Two current uses of AI in space: Rovers (AEGIS) and Environmental Maintenance (BioSphere). Possible future uses: Extraterrestrial exploration, Interplanetary travel (Passengers). Conclusion: To what extent has Artificial Intelligence impacted the space exploration industry? Second: Outline of Introduction: Context: Artificial Intelligence is an industry in itself as there are various uses for a technology which can simulate human behaviour however this also means that it can be used in various other industries. One such industry which has a potentially bright future for Artificial Intelligence technology is the Space Exploration industry, which has already implemented a few AIs and is planning to upgrade and implement more. Outline of Argument: This essay seeks to analyse the core function of AIs and how and why they are useful in the Space Exploration Industry. Scope: The essay will also include a couple examples of present uses of AIs in Space Exploration along with an analysis into their limitations and possible adjustments to make them more self-sufficient as Space requires largely self sufficient mechanisms or environments due to the amount of time it takes to communicate with Earth from distances further than the moon. Worthiness of investigation: This research question is worthy of investigation because it is a potential turning point in both the development of Artificial Intelligence technology and the advancement of Space Exploration (and its technology) to grander heights and it could be one of the keys to travelling to further distances physically. And honestly this is as far as I have gotten, except for a few lines into the actual Introduction. Is this a good start? Or do I need something a little more interesting or important? Any additional advice or constructive criticism which is not a direct answer to any of my questions will also be appreciated and considered. Thank you for your time.
  25. Hey everyone I'm just here to release my thoughts and worries cause they're just building up and get some advice (hopefully from people who have already finished IB or people who are going through the same thing) I just gave in my extended essay on literature and I'm kind of freaking out. I wrote it over the summer to save me time from worrying about it last minute and finished it by being told that we had to cite anything we PARAPHRASED. I did not know this. Therefore, I went back, changed and cited all the things that I KNOW weren't my ideas but I guess I was kinda lucky since most of it was all mine anyway. What I'm scared of, however, is I'm writing it on a very popular book with very similar opinions on it. I'm worried that something I wrote would be similar to something someone else wrote online even though I didn't take anything from it. I'm also very worried that I missed something whilst referencing. I know damn well I didn't copy anything word for word besides quotes and tried to cite everything I took from online. Our school still haven't run anything through turn it in or wtv but I'm hoping they would notify us if anything looks unusual. I just need advice cause I'm really not in the mood to lose my diploma over something that I didn't even intend on happening.
