Help deciding which classes to take?

I am going into my first year of IB. I had planned to take exercise science and art, but my school just let me know that this is not available. I must choose either bio and art, or psychology and exercise science. (We are on A day B day schedule so I must choose one of theses pairings) Which of these pairs has a higher course load? And which is harder content in general? Also, if there are any opinions not based on these questions I most definitely want to know that too! I am interested in all of these classes pretty equally, and just making sure I choose a pairing that will not be completely overwhelming. Thank you!!

    Psychology HL HELP

I moved to Psychology HL from Mathematics HL at the start of grade 12, and right now I have to catch up one year of Psychology HL, which the topics cover biological approach, cognitive approach, and sociocultural approach. I can self-study myself but I really don't get how we do the exams.. Do I really have to study everything? Or is there an efficient method of studying these topics? Like I heard something about the Learning Outcomes that can help with the exam questions, but I really don't understand it. Can someone please explain? Thank you!

    HL History IA on Vietnam

Hello everyone, I need help to chose a question for my HL History IA. I was thinking about doing the battle of la Drang for the topic. It would go something like to what extent was the battle of la Drang a victory for US forces? Is this a good question? If you have ideas on how to improve the question I'm all ears Thank you for your help
  4. Hello! I'm doing my extended essay on plant growth, but I only have 3 trials from my experimenting. I was told that theres hardly any statistical analysis that i can do without more than 5 trials, aside from calculating the mean, and I have no idea where to go with my data. I was planning on a lab based EE from primary data, but I'm not sure if thats possible anymore seeing as I dont have enough trials for in depth statistical analysis. Should I run more trials, or should I change direction with my EE and use my primary data to support secondary data, turning it into a research based essay instead of experimental?? Please help!! - Thanks, Cherry

  6. Hello, My name is Taha, I'm 17 years old, and currently in 12th grade. I'm looking for someone to help me with my Extended Essay. I've decided to focus my essay on quantum locking: including superconductors (YBCO), the Meissner Effect. I have access to the materials needed to experiment with this topic (materials from quantumlevitation.com). Some ideas I had in mind was to discuss the Meissner Effect in superconductors when cooled down to a critical temperature with liquid nitrogen. I was inspired to this topic when watching a talk on TED.com about quantum locking and quantum levitation (video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXHczjOg06w) This aim of this project is to study the properties of quantum levitation and locking and provide ways to improve the efficiency and speed of current transportation systems (high-speed trains, levitating cars, and hoverboards), and the idea of creating bearings with negligible friction. I will need help in formulating a research question that would be appropriate to the Extended Essay guidelines and know what is the best structure for my essay. Let me know if you can help me. Thanks,

    EE Help

Hello All, As you know by the title, I need EE help. Basically, I chose to do a biology EE cause it is my passion. At the beginning of our topic selection, I met with my advisor and told her that I wanted to do something with E.coli. Over the next several meetings I had with her, I decided upon studying how the different pH's of different foods inhibit E.coli growth. Long story short, on the LAST day of school my advisor tells me that I can no longer choose a topic that has to do with bacteria or else I will not score well. Apparently, IBO changed their guidelines that effected my class and when I asked my advisor about it she said: "yea, they can do that and we have to oblige". So I took about 1 day or so thinking about another topic I could do and landed on studying how different elements such as Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus inhibit the growth of a lima bean plant. So I got my materials and everything I needed to conduct my experiment and for the life of me, I have not been able to grow any seeds. All of the seeds which I have tried germinating or planting have died/failed/rot. That was 2 months ago. I have kept trying since then but to no avail. My rough draft of the EE is due on the first day of school 8/12/2019 and I do not know what to do. I have emailed my advisor multiple times and each time she has told me to either change my watering habits (which I have, I water once a day, and keep them in the sunniest part of my patio so they get the most sun), or to restart my seeds, or even keep trying. She even said she is baffled as to how I have not been able to grow such an easy plant. And now I am on the brink of a total mental breakdown and do not know what to do. My advisor told me I need some sort of data represented in my EE and if I have none, it will not be good. Can someone explain to me what would happen if my experiment for my EE does not go well? I would really appreciate it. Furthermore, I am in Florida, and all of the gardening departments of every store and independent gardening markets have stopped selling seeds as the season is coming to a close, which is making me even more frustrated now that I have no way of obtaining seeds. Someone, please help. Thank You.
  9. Hello, all who have clicked on this post I would like to simply ask you one question about my ee, specifically whether you guys think its tooo simple or not. So, for my extended essay, I've chosen to do physics (o god), and the sub-topic of astrophysics (double o god), I have come up with an idea for my ee, which is Investigating how the Luminosity, Mass and Surface Temperature of Main Sequence stars are interconnected. Is this too simple for an ee, or do you guys believe it has the potential to be a good if not decent ee? Oh, and the essay will be a database EE, (creating an experiment, and fitting data to come with some conclusion) (I won't go over the specifics such as research question and experiment that I will do since I fear plagiarism.) As a side note I do want to study astrophysics in university, I know that writing an astrophysics ee in ib is suicidal, but I wanna do it because i believe its a good challenge. So taking all that into consideration, what do you all think? Thank you, - a stranger of the internet

My Maths IA needs more maths!

Hi, So I was thinking of doing my Math SL IA on the use of the Fibonacci sequence (basic, I know) when composing visuals for film and television. I am thinking of taking stills from famous movie scenes and seeing how the Fibonacci sequence is applied and why. I am just afraid that this will turn into a visual analysis instead of a mathematical exploration and was wondering how I can apply more maths into this. thanks!

    Help needed!

I have an essay due soon. I basically have to write about Tom from the Great Gatsby. What do i need to know about him? Give me as much information as possible, and your thoughts on him. What is his role? Purpose? Maybe a bit of context (his past)? All help is appreciated.
  14. My EE was due a few days ago but I still can't help but think and worry about it. I wrote my EE within a couple of hours without discussing it with my supervisor because I had made a new one a few days before the final submission. I'm really stressed out at this point. I know I'm the only one to blame for doing this to myself but I DO NOT want an E on my EE. My word limit was 3.9k words, my essay was relevant to the proposed question, I followed a proper structure for my essay and referenced everything that had to be referenced yet I'm still scared because my analysis of the text is quite repetitive. I mean, the texts that I analysed had a few similar points that related to my question, but still. And I even did my font in calibri, 1.5 spaced and my table of content is size 16, and my referencing is a mixture of Harvard and Chicago fml. I don't know what to do at this point honestly, I screwed myself over and I'll have to wait a few months until I finish my exams and everything to see whether I failed. This stress caused by the EE would be biting me on the back during the exams and I'm afraid I won't be able to perform well. I already know what I want to do in Uni but this EE is really putting my hopes down. How likely is it for someone to fail the EE? And how exactly do you fail the EE? I'm like, really really really stressed out here.
  15. My chemistry IA investigates the different activation energy of the decomposition of H202 with Lead oxide and manganese oxide. My teacher told me to plot 1/Temp against Ln x 1/ Average Time taken but not how to actually calculate Ea. How do I get the activation energy if I have the time it takes for the percentage of oxygen to rise by 15% at 5 different temperatures and have it plotted 1/Temp against Ln x 1/ Average Time taken using the Arrhenius equation.
  16. This is quite a long story but I'm going to make it as short as possible. So when I first got my EE form, I put English Literature as my subject and put my two suggested supervisors who are both familiar with the subject. However, I was given a completely different supervisor who bases her teaching on VA. Though she told me I can focus on any subject like History, English or VA since she majors on them on the first meeting I had with her. Moreover, the DP Coordinator a few months ago, asked what subject my EE was and I said English whilst I had already submitted a VA EE. I don't really know why I did that, I just didn't have a proper RQ at the time and my supervisor barely gave me any advice so I just went along with it so I could at least provide the EE Coordinator with some essay for the draft. But when I received the feedback for my VA EE, my SP literally made me change the whole focus of my research question, so I have to basically restart again before the final submission in four days. Instead of doing it on VA, I went back to my original EE subject which was on English Literature. I'm a lot more comfortable on basing my EE on English since I'm not very familiar with Art terms as much as I am with literary techniques. But the problem is that my supervisor is refusing to give me feedback on the topic because she claims she already gave her form in and it was based on my VA EE AND now she apparently can't mark my English EE because she hasn't taught English in her life before. (literally, the other person who has her for a SP did it on English?!?!?) Now the DP & EE Coordinator want me to stick with my VA EE and give the fees to change my registration from English to a VA EE. Like, I understand I made a mistake by submitting a VA EE when I wrote English down, but can't they just accept my new English EE and forget about the rest? I still have a few days to receive feedback, I don't really see what their issue is. So idk, I'm really confused. Should I just continue with making a new VA EE or just keep pestering them to accept my new English EE? My English teacher is willing to give me feedback for it, anyways. I seriously don't have time to fix the VA EE anymore, but with English, I'm a LOT more comfortable and confident doing it. Also, is it actually a rule to pay a fee of $500 to change the subject registration sent to the IB? My school insists that I pay for it.
  17. Hi guys, I'm doing my EE on Khaled Hosseini's two novels 'the kite runner' and 'a thousand splendid suns.' I'm planning on focusing on the importance of friendship and how the friendship between the characters of the two books lead them to carry on courageous acts. I'm struggling to form a proper research question and I'm unsure as to what I should really focus on. So, any feedback on this overall topic would be much appreciated :)

    EE BIOLOGY (Need opinion)

Hello everyone, I am a doing DP1 at the moment and I would like to hear some opinions about my research question in biology. My research question is: "Is there a significant difference between gamers and non-gamers reaction time?". I will use a click test which records the reaction time of when someone clicks on the computer screen when it changes to green. Please tell me if I should be more specific or what I could improve in this question. Thank you very much!

    Biology IA Qualitative Data

Dear IB Survival community, I am almost done writing the first draft of my Biology IA. I have investigated the effect of different temperatures on the glucose content in Bananas. I have collected pictures of how the Bananas have ripened and included them under the qualitative data section in my report. Now I´m wondering where do I comment on this qualitative data? Do I talk about this in my conclusion even though it is not part of my research question or hypothesis? Thanks for your help guys :))
  21. my HOTA IA is due next Thursday and. I'm. Struggling. I wanted to do something in regards to the cherokee nation because my great grandmother was a cherokee indian. I came up with the question: "To what extent did the trail of tears affect the women of the cherokee indians" but my teacher told me it was too broad and to focus in on one of the tribes instead. so I came up with the question: "To what extent did the Trail of Tears affect the passing down of traditions in the wolf clan of the cherokee indians?" She said it was alright, but I'm struggling to find information on it and I really don't know what to do. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice that they could give me? It would be greatly appreciated.
  22. The first thing i would like to know is that, in your IB programs do your teachers communicate with each other so that they don't plan tests or assignments on the same day so they don't overwhelm the students? I'm going through a difficult time since my IB coordinator has told my class of 2020 that if we joined IB that it would be tough and challenging but the teachers talk to each other and plan their schedules so they don't overwhelm us. Some of the teachers talk to each other but rarely .... I spoke out about this since at this point in the school year their is so much stuff like assignments, projects, AP tests, finals due all in so little time and its just not me who feels overwhelm its other students in my class. I talked and explained to my IB coordinator about all that is going on and he sent out an email in response, to all the teachers and some are mad at me for speaking out about this. What should i do next and did i do anything wrong please help cause i don't know what to do and i don't want to make this problem into a bigger one.
  23. I have to choose my subjects this week and am wondering if HL bio is worth it for me. I wouldn't consider myself a very science-y person, although i am very interested in plants, evolution, dna, neurobiology and that kind of stuff. I am not at all interested in the human body, (find it unpleasant, really) and just the thought of dissecting something makes me queasy. I don't have any big problems with memorising content, i am more scared of writing lab reports. Will this be a big problem? Also is it very hard to use microsoft excel in bio for graphs and such? Would very much appreciate any guidance and advice on the matter, thank u

    TOK PRESENTATION RLS HELP!

Howdy, fellow IB kids I'm really struggling to find a RLS for my TOK presentation. I had to come up with a knowledge question really suddenly and it is "To what extent does one have the responsibility to share (substantial) personal knowledge?" My main idea for the RLS is to find a case where authorities, scientist have kept a secret from the public that could potentially be really important. Right now my only RLS idea is from the show "The 100" where they are all up on a space ship or something and an engineer finds out that the oxygen will soon run out. When he tells the president, he doesn't allow him to share the discovery to others and kills him to make sure of it. My teacher said that this will probably work, but a REAL RLS would be much better. So if you have any ideas of incidences kind of similar to that I would be REALLY GRATEFUL!
  25. Hello everyone, I am a French-Canadian studying IB in Estonia; I need help to find some topics and ideas to make a great research question for my EE in biology. I thought I could do a simple experiment which would give me a sufficient amount of data; it must be simple because as you know, we have a lot more to do than just the EE haha . My field of interest includes food, bacteria, drugs, human and animal physiology, microbiology, medicine, hormones, immune system and enzymes. If you have any ideas for interesting topics, experiments or ideas to make a great research question, please let me know in the comment section below. Thank you very much and have a fantastic day.
