    History IA Topic Feedback

My topic is: To what extent was humanitarian intervention used to justify imperialist ambitions by the united states during the Spanish-American War? What part of it would I have to tweak? Is it too broad, or too narrow? I have a lot of research done on the Spanish-American War. I'm afriad that what I sit down and write it my question wil bring me issues or my research and sources will not help me at all. I'm just really nervous that there is still some tweaking to be done with my question, but I don't know what part of it to tweak. Any ideas?
  2. Hi everyone, My class is beginning to write the first section of our history IAs and my teacher said that it will be okay to revise our questions. I have to write this first section in 2 days, but I am having doubts whether or not my research question is appropriate or not. Here is my question: "Was it inevitable for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings to occur?" I feel like the question is not specific enough and based on my research, there are so many theories that my IA could end up all over the place. I was thinking about changing it but with a topic similar to my original one, like this: "To what extent did the Soviet Union's declaration of war against Japan during World War II affect their surrender in 1945?" Could I still use my first question or should I try to revise it? If so, what are some ideas for topics? Thank you so much!

    History IA about art?

Hey! I'm new to the IB program and I was just wondering, would art be an appropriate topic for a History IA? Do you think topics about how art influenced WWII would be good? I found out online about how art was used to deceive enemies and the topic of propaganda. Therefore, I was thinking about the potential IA topic of, "How was art used to trick people during WWII for personal gain?" It's just a rough draft but do you think this question itself is too broad? Or is it okay? Also, is it common for students to write their History IA around films? Like comparing a movie to real sources. If so, does IB look down upon that? In other words, does IB like to see originality or does it not matter? Thanks!

    History of the Americas IA

Hey everyone! This is my first post here yay! I am trying to work on my IA. I am so lost. I had picked a topic, but then realized I wouldn't have enough information. I also don't really understand the point of the IA? I want to do something with the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and Henrietta Lacks, whose cells were take without her permission before and after her death. This would all fall under the unethical medical treatment of blacks but I don't really know how to make a question or where to go from here (preliminary research). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

    Another History IA Question

So I'm writing an IA for History of the Americas (HL) and I want to write about the Panama Canal Treaties in 1977. Do you guys think "To what extent did the signing of the Panama Canal Treaties signal a shift in US foreign policy that would introduce human rights into policymaking?" is a good question? I feel like it may be a bit too broad. Help?

On the Look for a Book

Hello! I need to start research for my IA soon. One of the cool things I learned I could do with this assignment is compare a movie and a written account, so for my topic I came up with: How accurately does Barefoot Gen portray the devastation caused by the Hiroshima nuclear bombing? Can anyone recommend a good read that gives accounts of the Hiroshima residents that survived and/or were witnesses to the effects of the bombing? Also, I hope the fact that the film is animated doesn't mess things up. It's historical fiction, so I wouldn't think so, but just to be sure..... Thanks a bunch!

    IA research question help!

Hi there everyone! Since my history teacher is useless and does not teach us anything, I would like to consult you guys on which of these research questions would be the better route for my IA for HL History of the Americas: 1)To what extent was the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan a deciding factor in the development of Canada as a nation? or 2)Compare the effects of the Second World War on the development of Canada and Mexico as major nations. I am currently leaning more towards the former, but I want to be able to know a bit more about Latin America than what is being taught in class for the IB exams. Maybe you can help me revise one or the other or come up with something even better! Like the women or the Japanese in Canada during WW2 or something? Anyways, pleeeeease help me! I have a due date of my evaluation of sources and summary of evidence tomorrow, so I am doing that based on the first question, but if I am going to change my question I want to do it ASAP! Thanks so much! Pey

    DBQ Blues

I have been struggling over this DBQ essay homework for the past several days. The question is "Discuss how the events and aftermath of World War I created the political, social, and economic conditions that led to World War II." I have several issues with this assignment. 1.)--My AP book mentioned showing "subtlety and nuance" in the thesis. J--just what does this mean, exactly??? Ō_Ó 2.)--Maybe I'm too literal, but I'm afraid of brining up events that actually occured DURING "the Great War", when the earliest document in my DBQ is dated 1919. Can it be done? How? 3.)--It seems like a lot of the economic, political, and social troubles happened all in Germany, what with their epic defeat, the Treaty of Versailles, how the Depression impacted Germany, etc. In the case that the question is asking for a more global view (and it likely is), what happenings in other nations are there to consider? Thank you for helping a poor soul out. :'I

So I'm taking History of the Americas HL, and I'm very nervous about my testing in May 2014. My teacher is incompetent and lazy (I'm understating it). He only spends about half of our classes actually teaching and hasn't issued us a textbook. I want to buy a book to study from, and I was wondering if there were any particular books anyone would recommend using.
  11. Attached are some notes from Benjamin Keen's textbook on US-Latin American relations, and their development, in the early 20th century primarily.
  12. Attached are notes on US Presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, and Johnson. Some are more detailed and extensive than others. Hope they prove useful!
