    HL Math or HL Psych

Hi I'm looking to go into the medical field in university but I'm not sure whether I should take HL Math or HL Psych. As of right now, I really want to study neuroscience in uni and I know Psych would help with that but at the same time, HL Math might be really important especially with calculus and all. My current subject choices are: HL Biology, Chemistry, Psych/Math SL English Lang Lit, Chinese B, Psych/Math Please let me know what you think is best and in general what you think of the subject combination. I know it will be extremely challenging and I'm scared but I like the subjects and I really want to head into the medical field. Thank you!
  3. Dear associates, I need your help. My Extended Essay subjects & topic are due soon, but I am struggling with the choice. I am determined to study medicine after graduating, and thus I want my EE to be relevant. However, when it comes to related sciences, Biology and Chemistry, teachers in my school strongly advise against them, claiming that students get the lowest grades for these subjects. I am interested in them but not much competent in either Bio or Chem, as I picked them only a month ago (this is another story 😂). Those of you who are experienced in the sciences or anyone willing to help, please give me your advice! Is it true that it is nearly impossible to get a high mark (A or B) in EE in experimental sciences? Do I better choose an interdisciplinary subject? Could you probably share some thoughts about medicine-related topics in EE? I would be genuinely grateful for any reply 😊
  4. Good afternoon, IB folks! It is my first year in DP, and only when the first half-year had ended, I realised that I want to change my specialisation. My HL subjects: Business and Management, English B and Russian A1; SL subjects: History, Maths and ES&S. I picked these subjects as kind of evil of the lesser kind because I had no clue what I wanted to practise in the future. Now I'm determined to become a surgeon. I talked to teachers at school and generally (theoretically!) changing B&M and ES&S to Chemistry HL and Biology HL is not that much of an issue (in comparison with the whole picture). The nastiest problem is where to study. I mostly strive for Germany because I know German at an intermediate level and the education there is relatively free. However, it is eminently challenging to get accepted to the major universities, and there are peculiarities one has to keep in mind. Has any of you experienced a similar issue? Has anyone applied to the universities in Germany to study medicine? Is there any sense in pulling this? And finally, does one have to pick Maths HL to become a doctor? Please, tell me everything you could share about this path. Thanks in advance 😊
  5. Hi all, I am starting IB next year and I'm starting to have my doubts. I've been reading a lot online and it's putting me off, so I'm trying to regain my confidence. I was just wondering whether Australian Universities like/favour IB students? Thanks,

    World studies extended essay

Okay so I am a first year iB diploma currently taking Chem, Maths, Bio HL and English, Italian and Geography SL and with 40/42 predicted grade. I now have to choose the subject and idea for my EE and since I'd like to do medicine then at uni my teachers have all advised me to get informed about the World Studies extended essay as they thing it will be a great opportunity to endorse a global health issue related topic. I now have two queries: Has anybody done a World Studies Extended essay on a health related topic and can give me advice? What would a possible medical student do as extended essay? Thanks so much xx

    Medical with Math studies

Are there any medical universities in Canada that accept Math studies? My HL’s are biology, chemistry and psychology
  8. I have the UMAT in a few days and I'm not entirely sure about it. I know you need HL Chem to study in the UK but I don't do it. I'm willing to change but Chemistry is difficult for me at times. I am not sure if our school has registered our IB subjects yet. They said they were about to. Can you amend registrations? Also, if I decide to do it, do I have a chance at doing well in the BMAT? I haven't prepared at all but I hear that Section 1 is kind of similar to UMAT. I do Maths Studies so I don't know if I am at a disadvantage. As an Australian student, would my predicted grade be used or my real grade?
  9. Hi so I have decided to write my extended essay on the world studies topic of Chinese traditional medicine. However now that I have chosen this topic, I am not sure where to go next. I wanted my research question to be something a long the lines of "to what extent is chinese traditional medicine effective...". I wanted to answer this by comparing the treatment and its results for chinese traditional medicine with those of western medicine for a particular disease, however I am finding the research for a particular disease to be quite hard. Do you think I should continue to research for a disease or should I scrap that idea and write the essay to be more along the lines of the history and concepts behind chinese traditional medicine and how it came to be? or is that to broad and generic? I am really lost so if anyone has written their ee on chinese medicine, can you send let me know what you wrote yours about? Also if anyone knows any good sources regarding chinese medicine and/or alternate medicine, please inform me! Thanks

    Please help - university options

Hello. I'm very confused and I feel like I can't talk to my parents about this anymore or any of my teachers, so I'm trying here. My dilemma: I would say I'm quite wishy-washy in terms of what subject I want to study. I know I want to do something science related, but I don't know what exactly it is at this point. My parents want me to study medicine because their reasoning is that I should go for a job where I won't have to work for anyone (they're against me entering the corporate world and to an extent, I agree with them). Now my problem is that I'm not exactly against doing medicine, there are some aspects that I find interesting - what I'm trying to say is that I'm not absolutely against it, but I'm not sure I would be able to succeed as well. I'm interested in psychology and biomedical research, things like genetics and stem cells. I applied for medicine courses via UCAS, and I applied to Irish universities for med. I'm still waiting to hear back from the Irish universities, but right now all I have is an offer from St. Andrews for psychology with biology (major minor thing) and an offer from an Irish uni for medicine. In terms of the medical offer, they're asking for 6 in chem, math and bio, and the psychology offer they're asking for 6 in bio. I don't know if I can achieve a 6 in chem because I find it quite hard and I've been consistently getting 4 and 5. Now my issue is this: I don't know what to do. I know this is a bit premature considering I haven't done my exams yet, but I have no idea which path to take. I feel like both my parents are contradicting each other and I don't want to talk to my counsellor because, well, there are reasons. Does anyone have any advice? This is really stressing me out to the point where I can't focus on studying for the exams, so I just want to come to some sort of resolution. Sorry this is a bit long and rambly, but I'm really not in the best state of mind right now.

    Course Selection Opinion

Hey all, Currently enrolled in the IB Program, I am still undecided on two subjects that I wish to pursue: engineering and medicine. Leaning more towards the medical field, I had chosen my courses mainly based on that decision; however, I am concerned about the amount of stress it might bring during my junior and senior year. My selected courses include: HL Math, HL English Lang. & Lit., HL Chem, HL Bio, SL Psych, and SL Mandarin Ab Initio My concerns include what subjects are required to enroll in a medical program in the United States or the United Kingdom (mainly for HL), and whether switching one of my HL sciences to SL Music would bring about any concerns, and if not, which HL science to pursue.
  13. What jobs require HL math? Does medicine require HL math? Or does it just look better to have
  14. Many websites are saying that high school students should have LinkedIn. Would LinkedIn be useful for someone applying to undergraduate Medicine in Australia? If it is useful or you have done it, do you have any tips?

    Medicine

Hello! So, I'm applying to medicine, and have a question. Is it possible to skip grades in a medical school IF you can get over all the material faster than the course itself? I'm just asking if it's possible, I'm just curious, so if anyone knows, please share your thoughts.By the way, I'm applying to UK, but you can also tell me about any other country if you know. Thank you.
  16. Hey there! So I am planning to apply to the UK as an international student. In high school I am doing the IB diploma and my predicted will be around 40-41 with HL biology (7) HL chemistry (6) HL Psychology (6) SL Eng (6) SL Mandarin (6) SL Math (6-7), my UKCAT score was average 650 with a band 3 SJT. I really wanted to apply to imperial, UCL, King's, Brighton Sussex and possibly anything for another school. According to my grades and UKCAT, what do you guys think would be my best option? and do you guys think King's would consider me as they highly value UKCAT score? Any advice would be amazing!

    English for medicine

Hi! So, I've just finished my first month of the IB programme. I am planning to apply to medicine in the UK. Theoretically, I have picked all of the subjects that are required (chemistry&biology HL). However, I am concerned about English even though I'm aware the choice between English A and B is not that important for universities (and there is nothing mentioned about in in entry requirements). Currently, I'm attending English B classes, but it is the last possibility to transfer this week. On the one hand, English B is more likely to provide me with a 7 on the exam + it would allow me to focus on biology and chemistry for medicine (as there is definitely less work) However, my tutor claims that English A would prepare me better for the interview and would make my language sound "native". I do like literature, but I dread that it would be too time-consuming and that writing and literature would continuously have a negative impact on my grades from bio and chemistry. The case is: which option should I choose to maximize my chances of applying to medicine with success? Is English A really that demanding and tough? Is it worth to risk my bio-chem grades in order to strengthen my language skills? Is choosing English A really crucial to do well on the interview or staying on English B is enough? Thank you for your opinions

    Medical Math IA

Hey guys! I'm looking for a math IA topic along the lines of medicine! I feel like the topic of the spread of infectious diseases is extremely overused and that maybe there could be a spin on it I could look at? Maybe somehow using statistics to find the most or least susceptible countries after findng the spread of infectious diseases? Also is there any calculations that could be done for some sort of bacteria immunization and how anti-biotics work to find out estimations of when antibiotics stop working for that bacteria? I would love to a medical math ia and any help is appreciated!

    University recquirements

Hi guys, So, I just had my mid years get over and I realized that my math paper went really bad. Note that I take Math HL. I was wondering if I can change my subject from Math HL to Business Management HL. Also, I plan on studying medicine after passing so I was wondering if the change in the subject would affect university prospects and, apart from -medicine I also plan on applying for Pharmacy, Architecture, and Chemistry. My subjects are as follows- Physics HL Chemistry HL Math HL English A- Language and Literature SL Business Management SL French ab initio SL. I was wondering if universities will say anything if Hl Math is switched with Business. PS- My exams are in May 2018
  20. Hey! I need to get a research question and I am interested to become a Veterinarian and I want to do an IA connected to it, however, I am confused on the topic I can do for my biology IA.
  21. Dear All, I am currently In year 10 looking to undertake the IB program in Years 11 and 12. I have the choice of these two selections: HL English HL Economics HL Chemistry HL Biology SL Chinese SL Maths (Planning on staring with 4HL subjects then potentially dropping one down) OR HL English HL Economics HL Chemistry SL Maths SL French SL Chinese In my most recent school report I received all A's for my subjects and my highest A's were in Science and the languages. Questions: I am currently wondering which of these selections would be the best in terms of getting into Medicine: HL Chemistry, HL Biology and one language, or HL Chemistry and 2 languages. Furthermore, how difficult is it to balance 2 languages in the IB, as well as HL Chemistry? I am starting to do IB assessments as extra work in my Year 10 classes and feel equally comfortable with both of them. Thanks
  22. Hello all! I am currently in the summer between the first year of IB and the second. Over the first year I came up with the title of: How has the globalization of food in Thailand affected the health of the population in terms of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and diabetes? I am interested in studying medicine in university in the future and decided to do a medicine related EE in geography as there are no experiments required (unlike the group 4 sciences) and it provides a different aspect of medicine, and I decided to focus it in Thailand as I live here and know the culture. I am interested in nutrition and the health field and think that this subject suits me well. Over the holiday I did a survey of 100 people asking them about their diet and whether or not they have any non communicable diseases to find a correlation to strengthen the conclusion made from analyzing statistics found online. This was all well and good until my brother (who graduated IB) said that what I am doing is obvious in the sense that of course people eating worse in Thailand means their health is impacted and that he thinks it is not very original and will be difficult to find more information about. I already have the survey data and changing my topic completely as per the suggestion of my brother would mean starting over. I think the best option would be to refine my research question to something more original and that I am able to find statistics on and that is why I'm writing here. I would appreciate some feedback about how I can progress, if you have any ideas about how I can alter my approach or if I should change my topic completely to something else.

    I have a serious problem

Hii everyone I need some help I'm thinking of applying to med schools in usa and canada next semester but my school only offers either ib chemistry or ib biology. I don't know why but there are two separate programs in our school and you can choose only one. One offers chemistry, physics, maths, literature, english and ess and the other offers maths, literature, english, french, biology and titc (turkey in the twentieth century) as ib classes. As I had to make a choice this year I chose the second one because I wasn't certain with med school but I had a keen interest on biology alone. Now I don't know what to do. If you know anything pleaaase help me? Thank you in advance.

    Pre-Med in the US

If I'm not wrong, for the majority of US universities, you can't do medicine straight out of high school. Of course, your principal will know better about that, and if there are any universities that allow undergraduate courses. If you're going to apply to some school in the US that doesn't allow you to do medicine straight out of high school, I very much doubt your subjects will impact your ability to get into medicine - you'll just want the highest score possible and to impress universities, so in that case go with what you feel you can do. It really depends on whether or not you have a degree of certainty as to whether you can make it to an American university. With either of the subject choices you've put down, you're closing doors to India. Technically, if you want to remain on the safe side, you can do an irregular diploma and all three sciences at HL, but that would be a pain in itself, and as you said, you don't think you'd be comfortable with it. It is, however, something to consider. Are you applying to any other country or just the US? In terms of if Physics is better than Biology, I wouldn't say so. I haven't started medicine yet, but I would say that Biology is more important but that doesn't mean Physics isn't important too, particularly for areas of medicine such as radiology. While you've specified you'd prefer psychiatry, remember, you still have a bunch of time to try all the areas. In the case of the second science, go with what you think will work better for you. What you like, what you're better at, etc. However, I would keep in mind where you're planning to apply, and if you want to apply to any other country what their requirements may be.

Subjects for Pre-Med in the US

I'm currently enrolled for the IBDP and will be starting school this July. We had to submit our subjects and I was pretty satisfied with my selection until the moment where we had to discuss everything with the headmaster and the coordinator. I wish to pursue Medicine, preferably in the US. (For several reasons) The principal recommended I take HL: Chemistry, Physics, English SL: Psychology, French, Maths when we were discussing my interests, ambitions, etc. But I'm not sure if I want to take Physics anymore because Physics HL does look exceptionally difficult and though I am sure I can do it if I try hard enough, I don't want to take it if I can do better in another subject. This is what I think I might finally take HL: Chemistry, Biology (I like Bio better than Physics), English SL: Psychology, French, Maths I personally find Biology to be more favourable as it interests me more, and is more relevant to what I want to pursue in Medicine. (Currently focused on Psychiatry, not sure) I am an Indian, and my principal is American, so he isn't too familiar with how Indian universities work, so that's why the coordinator puts in her opinions as well. However, Indian universities require THREE sciences. So basically I will be "closing my doors to Indian universities" if I go with my selection. There's the whole thing where I can give out a student proposal to take up three sciences but honestly, I don't think I can perform my best with all of my HLs being sciences. And is Physics somehow better than Biology? Just curious. No complications with Chemistry, though. I'm new here and I apologise if I've made any mistakes like posting to the wrong forum, etc. Anyway, I am really hoping that I'll be able to go to an American university (again, for several reasons), but I want to be safe here IF that is possible. If not, I honestly don't know what I should do...I've got some time before I have to give in my decision. I hope that's enough information, if not, I'll try my best to add more if I can. If anyone would be kind enough to guide me here, I'd be REALLY grateful. Thanks. x
