  1. hi, I am currently studying the IB bridging music. Apparently, my teacher doesn't quite know how to teach ib. I am a little bit worried about the next 2 IB years. Any advice?
  2. Hi! Please help me! I want to do my Math IA on something involving Korea and/or K-pop!!!!! I have no idea if I am allowed though to use as I'm not even sure where to find info for!
  3. I am trying to do a Math HL calculus IA on the flute and my outline is due in two days. I started by measuring the distance to the first open hole for each note fingering and graphing it on the x axis with frequency of the notes on the y axis. This gave me a quadratic function that can be differentiated to find the change in frequency with respect to distance (df/dD). I was hoping the differentiation would be a bit complicated but it's just the power rule since I got a quadratic. I am now trying to use related rates to find another rate of change, but I can't think of one that would be relevant. I was thinking of doing something with the volume of air required in relation to the distance to the first hole: dV/dD = dV/df x df/dD However, this would be way too simple. The variables I could change include length of the tube, volume of air, embouchure size, air speed and lung capacity. If anyone can suggest a way to salvage this idea, I would appreciate it. If I can't find a way to make this work I will probably cry myself to sleep because it's the only semi-good idea I've had.
  4. I want to get a practice IB Music Listening Paper from the IB store, but before I do, I would like to know this: will they also allow me to download the corresponding music extracts in audio files? I know that for the exams they give you discs there (and I think they are moving to a computer-based system of audio files), but I would just like to know if I will be receiving such audio files in any format before I choose to pay for a practice paper. Thanks in advance!
  5. Hello all! Is there any place I can find the new IB Music guide? The only one I can find is from 2011, and I know that one is outdated because in it they describe the structure of the old exam rather than the new one. Any place I can find the updated one? Thanks!
  6. I have 30,000 video-game songs and trained a RBM on them and used that model to create my own game music... I want to incorporate that data and discuss the quality of generation from the computer versus composers. I want to survey people on the quality of songs too (I took IB Psychology so I can do the experiment part accurately). Is this a computer science, Biology (human behavior), or music IA? I think this is a really interesting topic and wish to pursue it. Please help me understand which Topic to put my idea under if its at all possible. Thank you in advance!
  7. Hi, I have decided to use Eric Clapton's Layla as a part of my MLI, but I can't seem to find its full band sheet music. I want to display some of the guitar melodies' scores in my MLI but I can't seem to find the actual sheet music of the guitar parts as well. Would it be a problem if I used guitar TABs? I mean, can I put the TABs of those melodies in my MLI or would it be considered unprofessional?
  8. I take Music Sl and for my solo performance, I was thinking on playing, Liebestraume no.3 by Liszt, Prelude in C sharp minor by Rachmaninoff, Summertime by George Gershwin, Piano Sonata No.1 Mov.1 by Beethoven. Are they difficult enough and are they different enough since I heard that the IB wants diverse pieces.
  9. Like the title says: shout your recommendation in favour for your favourite bands out into the internet skies or towards your fellow people on this forum :3 Let's expand our music libraries!! I recommend the following for people to check out: Imagine DragonsOf Monsters and MenWeird Al YankovicThe Foo FightersThe KillersThe Lonely IslandThe BeatlesBlink - 182ParamoreLindsey StirlingWeezerYellowcard
  10. The name of the game is simple: Put on your Pandora, your Spotify, your Itunes, whatever you have, and write the name of the song in your comment with the words "In my pants" at the end of it. I'll go first... All The Small Things in my pants.
  11. Hi! I was wondering if one could do an Extended Essay on a subject they are not taking for example: if I wanted to do an EE on Gesualdo's Madrigal "Moro Lasso Al Mio Duolo", even though I am not taking IB Music. Thanks in advance
  12. I am in the process of choosing a research question for my extended essay and am unsure if the possible questions I have come up with are focused enough. Here are the two that I have created: How can the sound of the clarinet be described mathematically? To what extent can tone qualities of sound (i.e. Bright, dark) be quantified using Fourier analysis? Thanks for any help!
  13. Hey! I'm doing my EE on music, and this is my current topic: "To what extent can George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue be seen as a hybrid of musical styles?" I've just begun (my attempts at) writing an introduction for my EE, but I just want to see what others think of my topic first before I begin. Do you think it is suitable for an EE? Is it narrow enough? If not, do you have any suggestions as to how I would improve my title? Also is the TWE opening too cheesy? I've had mixed opinions from several of my teachers about that, some tell the entire class to only use TWE whilst others say to avoid it entirely if possible... Previous revisions of my title include: In what ways has the European Classical genre influenced George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue? // To what extent can George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue be considered a European Classical piece? I'm also having trouble with writing my introduction. I'm not exactly clear on what would be good to include - should I include background information on Gershwin, the Rhapsody, the era etc.? Do I define the terms in my question (e.g. hybrid, Rhapsody)? Or do I just mention my aim/purpose of the essay and give a brief summary of what the essay involves? Any helpful advice or suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!
  14. Hey everyone! I'm starting to think of topics to do for my MLI, but I don't know how to go about choosing my topic. I'm interested in the romantic and jazz genres, but I'm not familiar enough with either to know two good pieces with strong links to compare. I really like the piece Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff, but am not sure what the jazz piece would be. Besides comparing two pieces from the romantic and jazz genres, I was also considering doing a comparison between a minimalist piece and African music, where one of the focus could be on cross-rhythms. Again, I'm not as familiar with either genre so I'm not so sure about what pieces I'd do either. (I am aware that if I do choose this topic, I'll need to be careful about not choosing a minimalist piece that has been influenced very strongly by African music). Can anyone make any suggestions for pieces of music or offer any pieces of advice? Thanks!
  15. I want to do a music EE on Chopin's masurkas, i dont know where to go from here help me
  16. Hey people, In few days I need to hand in my EE, the problem is I have done 3800 words but my teacher told me I won't pass because I am missing the artifact. I was thinking about analyzing few punk songs (my theme is actually talking about the influence of the movement on people throughout the years) and now I don't know is that a good idea? First I was thinking about documentary movies but they are all crappy quality and mostly don't show any influence on the society and now I'm stuck here without an artifact... what would you recommend me to do?
  17. Hey guys:) I need to start my extended essay soon, but I don't know what to write about, I am definitely doing it in english though. I have an idea, which is to analyse an album and talk about the literature in the album. For example, if I take the album "Vessel" by twenty one pilots, I could talk about the use of metaphors and highlighting the characters mind set. Is this a valid idea, or should I stay away from music completely Thanks for the help means a lot
  18. Hi guys, Are any of you taking IB music and applying to a Canadian university? I heard that canadian universities don't really accept IB music unless you're going into a music only focused career. By that I mean doing stuff like playing in an orchestra, being a conductor or a music teacher. NOT stuff like doing stuff like music technology, or working in a studio/theatre/stage doing sound mixing and stuff. What I am trying to get at is, i'm interested in doing something like that (working in a theatre or studio doing sound backstage) and so I want to apply to music technology in a Canadian Uni. However, I am not so keen on taking two sciences because I am not all that good at science. I am okay at physics but not at chemistry and I don't think biology will be useful. If I took higher music and standard physics, do you think Unis in Canada wouldn't consider me?
  19. So I am planning on doing my extended essay on K-pop, or korean pop music, what do you guys think? Is it too "weird" or extreme, lol? Or is it unique..? Please help!!!
  20. Hey everyone, I've noticed that there is a lack of Theater Arts students on this website and I struggle to find help and advice for my Theater class. Today I decided to put that behind me considering I have been through a lot during my theater journey and decided it would be easier for me to just create a forum for the new Theater Arts students from 2016 onward. This forum will be a discussion point for everything Theater based from the Nov 2016 session and for the years to come (unless they change the syllabus again). Please feel free to ask me any questions that might concern you about the Theater Arts course as I am graduating this November so I've gone through the ups and the downs of being a Theater student.
  21. Hello, nice to meet you; I'm very new here, so please forgive me if I'm a little weird/rough around the edges lol. However, the main thing is that right now I'm quite conflicted. I'm a British student currenty in Year 11, going to an IB sixth form in 2017, and I have had a massive dilemma for the last few months. I want to do Computer Science at university, or at least a STEM subject to be broader, and my current choices are: SL Literature and Performance (as I like creativity, and Drama appeals to me more than normal English) HL Maths (daunting, I know, but for where I want to go I'm willing to take it on) HL Physics (to keep my options open rather than taking Computer Science, which would be a one-way route) A SL Humanity that I haven't decided yet as I hate them all I can't decide between them just yet. However, for my Language B and Group 6, I have 3 subjects I want to do, but only 2 spaces open to take them: German, which I've taken for 4-5 years now and have LOVED; Music, which I'm 'naturally gifted' for and have done all my life; and Japanese, a language that I'm absolutely fascinated in and have always loved, to the extent where I have tried studying some alone, despite not learning the language in school. The TL;DR of this text is that I can only choose 3 of the following combinations; HL German and SL Music, HL German and AI Japanese OR AI Japanese and HL Music, and I'm not sure which one would be the best in terms of enjoyment, doability and point-getting. There are points for and against each subject, which makes the overall decision process much harder. German is something I know I love and do well in, but I'm not too confident in getting a 7 at HL due to a low turnout of 7s in HL Language B in IB schools throughout my area. Furthermore, I've heard that many Germans speak fluent English, making the need for fluent German pretty unnecessary. Music is something I find relaxing and natural, but I've only been doing my grades for a year or two now (I'm Grade 4 piano right now, learning Grade 5), so the performance part of the syllabus is quite hard/scary for me (though I still believe getting a 7 in HL Music to be slightly easier than getting a 7 in HL German) and I can continue doing my grades without taking IB music lessons, meaning I won't close any doors by not taking it. Japanese is a subject I've wanted to take my entire life* and have made an effort to teach myself, which I find fun and interesting though I don't have the self-discipline to sustain self-study lmao. I already know hiragana, katakana and some very basic kanji from my time in Japan, so learning it shouldn't be impossible, but the problem is that I've never actually taken Japanese, hence the choice only being Ab Initio. I think I prefer Japanese, but should I really place it over Music and German, which I know how to do and know I love, on the hope that I'd like Japanese more than them? Honestly, I know that none of these subjects are particularly useful for my career path, but I LOVE creativity through logic, which is what attracts me to Computer Science, composition in Music and languages in general, meaning that I feel like I'll make the IB draining, boring or too stressful if I don't make the right choices. I've thought about this dilemma for ages and have made many past conclusions, but for some reason I can never seem to stick to an idea once I believe in it and always find myself back at square one. Please help me; I've been stressing about this so much, especially with my GCSEs still getting closer! (P.S. If it means anything again, I used to be conflicted between German, French and Music, but from everyone I asked in my school, people were overwhelming for Music and German. I've never asked about Japanese however, due to it only recently becoming a possible option, and Japanese and French are worlds different, so I'm not sure if this holds any value lol) * = (Not important but kind of a backstory, but I've originally always wanted to learn French and Japanese since I was little. When I first got into my secondary school however, I was placed into doing German without choice, as a compulsory GCSE choice for my form and I, which sucked at the time until I realised how much I enjoyed it lol. I was given a choice for my second language in Year 8 though, which I placed down as Japanese, but as there were insufficient numbers of pupils, Japanese as a class was cancelled and so I was placed in French, which saddened me A LOT back then. I've disliked and confused myself with French for as long as I can remember, but I've tried as hard as I could regardless because I thought it was an undeniably useful language in the working world. Now, I finally have the chance to take Japanese once more, but at the price of dropping German for it, which is a VERY hard choice to make...)
  22. Hi, guys! So currently I am already in my 2nd year of IB, and I am very worried about my IA/solo performing. I have been playing the piano for quite some time, started since I was around 3 years old (I've been playing for more than 13 years), but the problem is I have been very lazy and have only picked it up seriously around two years ago. My piano skills are okay, I don't play classical so I do not take ABRSM exams, but according to my teacher my technical skill level at the moment should be around Grade 6-ish. The pieces I can and currently learning to play is All of Me by Jon Schmidt (The Piano Guys), Divenire by Ludovico Einaudi, and I am currently learning Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin. I might also learn few of Chopin nocturnes/etudes as well in the future. The problem is, that it takes me such a long time to be able to master a piece (it can take me literally years), and in a program like IB music I know that I need to be able to perform numerous pieces decently in a short amount of time since I need to do a lot of those for the program. I have recorded two piano pieces so far, which is Divenire and All of Me. My Divernire was decent so I think I might be able to submit that, however, my All of Me is terrible hahaha However, my Einaudi piece is very long - if i'm not mistaken it is 8 or 9 mins long, and I know that we are limited to only 15 mins of performance. I am also aware that the examinors are looking for a wide range of music, so I feel that 8 min piece might be too long and I am only left with 6 more minutes which means I can only play roughly around 2 more short pieces. Also, I picked up the violin 2 years ago and although I'm still quite terrible, I might get recruited into a string quartet and this might be an opportunity for one of my pieces to submit to the IB. Overall, I have a few questions: 1) How long does your pieces need to be roughly (ideally)? Because 8 min piece might not be suitable. And also, is it okay to edit and cut a bit of the recording so I can more time to play other pieces as well? I know there are not any rules about this, but what does your teacher recommend? 2) Is it okay if we perform more than one instrument? I might be able to submit my violin playings as one of my pieces, but I don't know if that is allowed. 3) Any tips on how to learn pieces quickly? Or do you think a good solution is just to learn easier pieces so I can get them done quicker? 4) When is the deadline for these submissions? Is it too late for me to change to do compositions instead? Sorry for the long post. Thanks!
  23. I have about a week and a half left to decide on an EE subject area. Everybody in my school who has ever done IB did either a Literature or History EE (although there was one person who did Math; we've only been an IB school for a couple of years), and that's what the teachers all recommend. I'm thinking of doing a EE in Music, but I do have some doubts about it. First of all, I know that the Music EE is generally about the musical analysis of a piece. Even though I'm not the IB Music class in school, I took music outside of school for many years (Royal Conservatory), and I did exams for intermediate music history and harmony. I'm pretty sure I know enough about analysis to write a Music EE, but still. I'd love to hear the experiences from someone who did a Music EE without being in IB Music. Or really, I'd just like to hear the experiences of anybody who did a Music EE, since apparently they're few and far in between. Basically, I'd love to try a hand at writing a Music EE. I really love music, and I'd actually like to use the stuff I learned for once . But I know that doing an EE outside of your studied courses isn't recommended, and I don't know whether or not I might be missing anything important for the EE by not taking the IB class. Thank you for reading this!
  24. Hi everyone, I'm currently writing my EE in music, and my topic is the development of Beethoven's piano sonatas. As of now, my research question is: To what extent has Beethoven changed his style of composition over the course of his piano sonatas? I don't take music as a part of IB, so I'm wondering if someone could tell me if there's anything I should be aware about when writing an EE in music. What will IB expect in my essay? I know that my essay should be specifically focused on analyzing the music itself rather than its history/lyrics/etc., but that's about it. Any advice on writing music EEs, and any other general EE advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance
  25. Hello! For my math ia I'm working with the relationship between math and music and I need someone to explain to me what a MIDI note number is. I've tried googling it but I'm still fairly confused as to what the number actually is/represents. I really need to know this before I can continue with my ia so fast responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
