  1. I've started my Math SL IA (finally) after not being able to find a topic for months, whatever I found I either didn't understand, was too simple, or my teacher said there was too little math in it. Currently, I'm working on an IA on the Tower of Hanoi, which happens to also be in an IB sample IA. I'm using the same aim and methods in the sample, but I am planning to cite the sample in my references and use my own words and personal engagement. I told my teacher about the similarity to the sample and she approved my topic, but I'm worried I'm plagiarising and will be penalised for it. Is this plagiarism or can I just continue with what I'm doing?

  3. I was reading through some past chemistry IA examples and found a research question that I thought was really interesting and quite unique. I was wondering if it would be okay for me to use the same research question and essentially the same procedure, or would that be plagiarism?
  4. In my EE for English B, I forgot to add footnotes or in-text citations. However, I have a full bibliography in MLA. Will my work be considered as plagiarism?
  5. My first artwork that would be going towards the exhibition and the IB is inspired/influenced by another artwork. I basically did copy it but the concept behind it would be slightly different and I'll be adding some objects (maybe a different colour) to the background of the portrait. Of course, I would be referencing everything and mentioning that I copied it but my only concern is, am I actually allowed to do this? I spoke to my VA teacher about the artwork and she said it's a great idea (I even informed her that the artwork has previously been completed by another artist), so I'm assuming that I am allowed. But I just want to make sure if it's really fine or I should just avoid copying it, even though I'm citing everything and just come up with another artwork idea?
  6. Okay so i am so worried. My English written task has been handed in and put through turn it in. So i have referenced everything except a small paragraph of information that i used. But the information did not show up on the turn it in check because it was quoted from an image. I am so worried and i cannot resubmit unless i have valid reasons. (IB does not just use turn it in but another one that can cross-check images.) Would it show up?
  7. Guys, what does IB say about sending my EE to someone through email? Is it gonna detect is as plagiarism? 2. What about word count websites, does it also detect my work and potential plagiarism? I put it in and I don't know if I didn't ruined everything... Please, it's an emergency!
  8. Hello everyone, I am writing the extended essay (on psychology) but i am not sure of something. If, for example, I read a journal and decide do write a similar sentence in my ee but with different words, is that considered plagiarism?
  9. Hello, I was wondering how does the IB check for plagiarism in the Visual Arts course (for the visual content, like photos and images). I take Visual Arts HL Photography, and I am just worried that some of my content might show up online because I tend to publish stuff on Tumblr and such. My friends reblog my content and it's a heavy chain of reblog-repost action. Do you think I'll fail my diploma? It has been getting to me lately. If caught, they do contact you first, correct? I mean, you must be given a chance to explain yourself after all. Someone help out a sister! I can't even focus on my exams...haha
  10. Hey guys something has been really bothering me lately. My school just sent my commentaries to the IB a while back. I found out that some definitions in one of my commentary weren't cited but were taken from 'Investopedia', however all my ideas and concepts were original. Will I get penalised for the uncited definitions?

  12. Hello, When does the IB start grading stuff that you've submitted to IBIS, like the Extended Essay, TOK, IB Visual Arts material, and your English Written Assignment? etc. Does this happen before the exams are over? Like, are they marking everything now? In addition, if you, let's say get caught plagiarising on any of the above, do you get contacted? Or do you just fail your diploma? I'm pretty sure they contact you before your diploma is out to justify. Correct? Regards

  15. I have used many ideas in my English A written task from other opinion columns. I'm afraid if I cite the sources, the examiner might think that my WT is not original and take away a few marks. For example, if someone had written " Have you ever seen a crying baby? Babies are aware.." Then I would write "If you have ever seen a baby crying, you will notice that babies are aware ....". Is this plagiarism? I am using the exact same ideas but just chaning the words a little. Can the examiners detect this? And what would happen if they find the opinion columns I have used?
  16. Hey guys! Does anyone know an anti-plagiarism program or software, especially for IA or EE?.. Just wanna to be sure that my work is unique Thanks in advance XOXO
  17. Hello! I have been struggling with choosing topic for my ESS IA. The thing is the topic I was going to do was similar to the sample provided by IB head. I really don't want lose points because of plagiarism and I am sure that my IA will definitely not identical to the sample. So my question is, is it fine to have similar contents to the sample? Do I get disadvantage for that? Additionally, if you have any idea on ESS please comment here.... Thank you........!
  18. Hello! So I am a little nervous with the IB results coming up. One of my concerns is whether or not my TOK is plagiarized in the way that I didn't cite general knowledge claims. Examples include: -"it explained how DNA contains our identity encrypted in detail with variations of complex chemicals" It referring to a book, being told as a personal experience -"art appreciation in ancient Rome was very distinct to that of Native Americans as different qualities defined the value of artistic material" -"it is not only morally accepted, but also part of everyday life to subordinate women from men in other places like Saudi Arabia" (I know this sounds very wrong but I wrote this essay last minute) -"I have also realized that even though ethical knowledge in Western Europe and in Eastern Asia were developed almost independently, both cultures have reached the same conclusion that murder and theft are ethically wrong" None of these claims are cited as my teacher said that general knowledge claims are fine to not be cited, however, my teacher is not really an IB teacher and he also did not explain well what he meant by general knowledge claims (pretty broad to just mention eh?) My question is, since most of you guys went to real IB schools (not like mine lol) what do you know about this? am I ok? And if the IB says its plagiarized what happens? I did not use any sources to write the essay, no websites to help me with these claims because they only need common sense and general knowledge, all of it was my own knowledge and according to TurnItIn the entire essay had a similarity of 1%. The entire essay is in my own words, not even quotes!
  19. Hello, So I did an Econ IA one late night (only 1/3 IAs) and I was using my Econ IB textbook, and copied some parts of my explanation for the diagram word for word. my teacher has not/will not have us submjt anything to vericite/tii but I have a possibility of being selected for moderation. Will IB consider what I did plagiarism? Will there be repercussions for my teacher not catching it, or the school? Will I not get my IB diploma or will I just get a zero on the IA and still have the ability to pass my exams and get my diploma? pls help I am worried, AND I KNOW PLAGIARISM IS BAD I SHOULDVE CITED THE TEXTBOOK I AM AN IDIOT I KNOW BUT LESSON LEARNED
  20. It's not that I ever had intentionally plagiarized, but I feel self-conscious when I think of what if I forgot a quote here, or what if this idea was actually someone else's and I don't know it? I intentionally made my work extremely personalized and unusual because I'm very freaky about being accused of plagiarism. I checked most of my work sentence by sentence, but for example, for the English L&L WT2 I intended to create a pastiche of a UN speech from last year, but set in the future. Some parts of my work were modified sections of the speech, but most of it was entirely new material. My point was to modify the language to remove all words from etymological origin other that Anglo-Saxon, for which I based my work on the method from the text "Uncleftish Beholding" However, I am freaking out, because I had to upload the final version without receiving a final feedback from my teacher, and when she got to read it afterward, she said that I may be in trouble because my rationale was not clear enough. That although no part of the text Uncleftish Beholding was explicitly used, I should have put a footnote on the title and then added it to the bibliography as well. Also, she said that I did not make it clear enough that I was doing a pastiche. I instead wrote something like "I recreate a speech given at the UN Summit, setting it in year 2040". I did put the speech in the bibliography, but put no footnote after my explanation either!!!! Are these very serious things? Is it commonplace to hear of diplomas being revoked for things like this?
  21. The thing is that i missed the whole footnoting of several sections, all referring to the same source, which I did list in the bibliography though. However, since I modified a lot the verbatim pieces of a conference transcript, it will look a lot like I have plagirized the material, even though I also specified in my rationale that I was "recreating a speech" of the united nations. I cannot sleep and fear that I may lose my diploma for these paragraphs in my written task. Can my coordinator write to the IB to allow me to change the file?
  22. I have been unable to sleep for the last weeks because I submitted a wrong file that was not properly referenced and the footnotes were incomplete, and I should have put a footnote after a paragraph but didn't, though I did include it in the bibliography. the task is already authorized by my coordinator and I want to commit sucide because I have put too much effort in every single task and how this ... 😭
  23. So guys, i checked turnitin of my TOK essay I got 25% plagiarism - 15% from bibliography and quotes 10% from footnotes and coverpage Other than the quotes, none of my essay body got highlighted Is everything ok here?
  24. Does turnitin only work for papers written in english or can i check my Russian lit world literature essay for plagiarism on it as well?
  25. Since the date my advisor is sending in my (Music EE) work is tomorrow, I should have asked this question a while ago. Here's my situation- I haven't really had an engaged advisor, so I've been writing my essay on my own with help from a friend. I've finished and edited that piece a long while ago and was somewhat satisfied with the quality. Starting around two weeks ago, I've written another essay that I believe is actually quite great, but with one major flaw: it has a very similar structure and nature of one of the "50 Exemplary EEs". Which should I submit? Will I be docked serious points or accused of plagiarism for turning in the second? My 2nd research question has to do with whether the Essence of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker orchestra is retained by the big band in Duke Ellington's Three Suites and I'm worried about it being too similar to the essay "To what extent does... Andres Segovia... retain the original flavour of its source". I have the same general 4 section skeleton as well, albeit with completely original research and writing of course.
