  1. Hello, I have been an IB Physics teacher for several years and I started creating videos for my students and for my Physics website (PaperPlainz.com). I started uploading some of them on Youtube and I just wanted to let you know that you can watch them here. I am continually working on videos, practice questions and other IB Physics materials, so keep checking for new resources from time to time. Have a nice day, Peter
  2. I need help... I don't know if I should choose Chemistry HL, I was a Core IGCSE student and I'm not very good at chemistry or an overall intelligent student , I was in the top 5 but as a class we are not very good anyway.Should i choose it i have until the 3rd of November to choose my options. Ohhhh. I'm also a hardcore procrastinator and never really do things on time. Is CHEM HL really hard? or if i study will i be able to do it
  3. Hi, For my math IA, I chose to do traffic flow. So far, I narrowed down my potential questions to: a) How do trucks contribute to traffic jams and b) What causes traffic jams. Do you guys think that one of these is a do-able topic question, or should i change it? How can i structure my IA to get a good mark? Thanks :))
  4. I've started my Math SL IA (finally) after not being able to find a topic for months, whatever I found I either didn't understand, was too simple, or my teacher said there was too little math in it. Currently, I'm working on an IA on the Tower of Hanoi, which happens to also be in an IB sample IA. I'm using the same aim and methods in the sample, but I am planning to cite the sample in my references and use my own words and personal engagement. I told my teacher about the similarity to the sample and she approved my topic, but I'm worried I'm plagiarising and will be penalised for it. Is this plagiarism or can I just continue with what I'm doing?
  5. I am halfway through my summer holiday and I have not started writing my EE because 1. I'm very confused as to how to write it in the first place 2. I don't know where to start. My supervisor left my current school and did not really give me useful advice or insight while he was there, he did not even read the semi-draft that I gave him so I still don't know if what I've done is on track or not! I've read a lot of tips on how to write history EEs but most of them contradict each other so now I'm so confused as to how I should structure or approach my question. Any advice or guide will help
  6. Hi guys, I’m currently working on my Math SL IA and I need help on what maths to use. I am investigating the variables affecting reaction time, such as sleep, gender and involvement in sports. My teacher approved my topic, yet he said simple statistics would not be enough for an SL IA. He said I could calculate probabilities from the distribution graphs, but I’m not sure what he meant. If anyone could explain how I could use probabilities and give me more ideas on what maths I could apply in my investigation, I would really appreciate it.
  7. My Chinese teacher has permitted me to study a year of Chinese over the summer, and this will put me into IB Chinese B SL. The course progression of foreign languages goes like this: freshman year -- Chinese 100, sophomore year -- Chinese 200, junior year -- IB Chinese B SL (300), and senior year -- IB Chinese B SL (400), and then we take the IB Chinese B SL test in our senior year. Since I will be studying over the summer, I will be taking IB Chinese B SL a year earlier and have the chance to study IB Chinese B HL (500) if I find myself truly loving the subject and language. I learn languages fast, but I have never done it in two months before. However, I am not a native speaker of Mandarin, and therefore, I will naturally struggle with studying Chinese. Are there any studying techniques available specifically to retain what I study over the summer?
  8. Title. Science doesn't exactly relate to my intended major (economics) so I'm really just choosing whichever is the easiest one at SL. Also, I'm not considering chemistry to be an option cause I'm learning it right now and absolutely hate it.

    Math IA

I really really hate math. I am terrible at it, but I just had to take math at school. Therefore, I have to do IA. What is the easy topic for IA in math? I want a good grade in it. The full score is 20, right? Please help. Any ideas?
  10. Hey guys, So I am currently in a maths SL class and I am not doing that bad, but I am considering dropping to maths studies because of the teacher. She is failing me now (apparently it was a mistake and she's lowering my grade for EXCUSED absences when I was sick, but that mistake should take place since it was written on my report card that im failing), and we have this weird thing now, our class is divided into four groups (every group has a leader) and every lesson we have a test or two, and before that a leader has 5-10mins for explaining a topic. We get grades for that, and my group is getting the lowest scores and those low grades are affecting our predicted grades. Anyways, because of that I have decided to drop to studies but the only thing that is holding me back are universities. But at the same time it is better to be sure that ill pass IB with a good grade from studies than failing SL 😕 Can someone help me with deciding on what should I do please??? 😕
  11. I have been struggling with my Maths due to how I was changing schools twice before, in and out of different systems and I really need help with the syllabus now but also some of the basics from before. Does anyone know where perhaps online that I may get free tips or help on my maths?

This IA got a 7. I don't know what exact mark it received, but it is likely a low 7 (I will update the description if ever I find out). It is not very hard to get a 7 in a history IA as long as you follow the format and criteria as closely as possible. My IA serves as good evidence for this as I did not read or buy a single book in my list of sources, instead just read the previews available on amazon or google books. Here is a more accurate list of sources: I do not recommend you do the same thing, I simply did this because of time constraints (our teacher only told us about the IA about 2 or 3 months before the final deadline, which is not enough to read 6 books), but I am just telling you this so that you don't despair. Good luck!
  13. I have chosen the following subjects: Polish A English B HL Chemistry Psychology Visual Arts I’ve got no idea which to choose on HL, and which ones on SL. What would you suggest? Which can be the most useful? Which are the hardest? Also, I want to study in UK, but I don’t even know what I want to study. Do you have some propositions of what I could study after these?

MATHS IA HELP - TIDAL WAVES?

I have currently chosen to investigate tidal waves for my maths IA. However, I am unsure as to what other explorations I can do under this. (And whether or not this is too simple...) Is modelling and predicting future tidal waves appropriate? I have secondary sources that'll give me data of tides at different points in times at a beach, so I will be able to graph them. I will also use trig and algebra to find the ideal time to visit the beach with my "ideal" tidal height of 1.5 metres I am uncertain as to what other maths/exploration I can apply to this Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
  15. So i sent off my directors notebook officially and i only just noticed that i didn't in text cite the lines from the play text that i used. I put all the quotes together and divided aganist my total word count and it makes 3 percent of the overall word count. I did however put the play text in my bibliography, will I be okay or should i be really scared?
  16. Hey everyone, I'm currently writing my economics commentary and have to hand in the draft after this weekend, and I just feel very lost with the structure and connecting things to each other, like the diagrams. If anyone could give me some tips I would be extremely grateful.
  17. So I currently take HL Biology HL Economics HL Math SL Chinese B SL English Lit SL Visual Arts Semester reports came out recently and i ended up with a 6 in bio, 7 in Econ, 4 in math, 6 in Chinese, 5 in english, and a 6 in art. I also participate in a crazy amount of after school activities and face a LARGE amount of stress from my math class. As far as college, I plan on applying to highly competitive schools (UC Berkeley, Stanford, UChicago...) I currently have a low 4 in my HL math class and I know it's only going to go down from there. The only thing discouraging me from dropping math' classes is the fact that colleges will see that I dropped to an "easier" math class and will see me as a quitter or unintelligent. Which weighs more, me getting a higher grade in an "easier" class and my mental health or the possibility of getting rejected for dropping classes?
  18. hi... I took May 2018 exams with 4 HLs( maths, chemistry, physics and EngB) and got a 4,5,6,6 in each subject. I missed Nov 2018 exam so I am thinking of retaking( I mean I must..lol)only maths or both maths and chem in May 2019 I want to change HL maths to SL to get more points. Is it possible to change the level for retake?? Should I retake chem as well? my grades are maths hl 4 phy hl 6 chem hl 5 eng b hl 6 kor a sl 6 b&m sl 6 2 bonus =35 Will there be enough time to do the IAs and exam preparation for both maths and chem? or should I focus on maths?? Thank you!

    Phyisics IA SL

I'm a little lost on my topic and i would appreciate the help. I want to do it on collisions in american football. I thought about focusing it on the concussions that the football players suffer and do some sort of chart and analyze the results (obviously) to show some sort of pattern. I thought about tying it to the way that a play is designed and the dangers of this. I'm worried it could come off more as a Math IA instead, because by showing some sort of pattern and graph you could make a function out of it. I believe one student this something similar that was actually their Math IA originally but changed it to physics (not about collisions or american football, don't worry) but i don't clearly remember if his result did end on a function or not. I would very much appreciate the help and if you have any suggestions about other ways i could focus this topic that would be amazing as well.
  20. Hi, so for my IA topic I chose to explore if there's a correlation between race/country and adoption. I've run into a problem though because I'm focusing on 5 different countries and then the number of adoptions from each of those countries over 19 years so I have 5 seperate scatter plots. If I try to find the correlation based off each scatter plot, it would be between the number of adoptions and years for just that one country, instead of all the countries and adoption rate as a whole. How can I fix that? Do I look at it a different way or am I just focusing on it the wrong way? Please help!!
  21. I'm on my second year and I still haven't chosen any topic or title, can someone help me out please?
  22. so my question is " how does club head speed affect the distance of a golf ball" im just worried that this is too simple, im doing it on correlation as i find that the easiest (if you have any other topic suggestions please tell me) however i was thinking about changing it to "how does club head speed affect spin and distance of a golf ball" is this better and if so how do i do a correlation with three variables. Thank you!!
  23. Hi, I'll have to decide on our ia topics by tomorrow! I came up with 2 potential ia topics but can't decide which one to do: Does my city fit the multi-nuclei model? What factors affect the sphere of influence of the local supermarket/store? With the 1st one I'll need to find certain features in the, say 5-6, potential commercial centers in my city, and use the definitions to prove that they are indeed CBDs, and then piece them together. There're a few classmates with similar topics and we're supposed to go in groups, but still it might be pretty tough fieldwork? With the latter I'll first measure the sphere of influence, and then come up with affecting factors, like the types of goods they sell. Problem is, the effect of sth on sth is usually pretty relative, means there has to be a range of variables? Like I need to go from the grocery to the supermarket and to a department store? That would be too much for 2500 words. Has anyone done similar topics before? Any tips on that? Which one should I do??? Thanks a lot.
  24. How can you show that there is too little or not enough inflation in an economy with a Keynesian diagram? Say, for example, that a government wanted to have a 3% inflation rate, but currently has only a 0.5% inflation rate. How would you illustrate the initial problem (the 0.5% inflation rate) in a Keynesian diagram?
  25. Say you have a Keynesian diagram showing a recessionary gap where actual output is less than potential output, and aggregate demand is on the left of the full employment level of output (Yfe). If AD increases and shifts to the right, but does not reach the full employment level of output, and the price level (PL) increases, and the new AD curve is still on the left side of Yfe, would the increase in PL be called 'inflation'? How do you know whether there is spare capacity in an economy? When reading an article, how do you know whether aggregate demand is in the spare capacity section? Can AD be somewhere in the middle - in between completely spare capacity and full capacity? What are the characteristics of this section? Why are prices and wages sticky/inflexible? Can they be upwardly sticky/inflexible?
