  1. Hey, I'm going to start IB in September 2019 and so far my subject choices are: English B HL Geography HL Biology HL Chemistry HL Maths SL Polish Lit SL I was wondering if choosing English A SL and dropping English B HL isn't a better option. I would love to study medicine in the future but I'm taking Geo HL because I love this subject (and I've heard it's relatively easy) and then I still have the possibility to change my mind and study a course connected with Geography at the university. Do you think that English A SL is 'harder' than English B HL (that's what my English teacher says but I'm not sure if she's a reliable source)? Or is it considered worse by the universities (because it's SL, not HL)?
  2. So these are my choices for now 1. Art HL 2. Chinese B HL (must in our school) 3. Business HL 4. Math Applications and Interpretations SL 5. English LangLit SL 6. DT SL I was wondering if math analysis sl would be better for graphic design but then I'm very average to bad at math
  3. Hey guys, I just made my account to ask questions regarding my subject choices. I am interested in computer science and engineering so I want subjects that keep these choices open. My thoughts are: 1) Computer Science HL Maths HL English B HL Business Management SL Greek SL Physics SL 2) Maths HL Physics Hl German HL ESS SL Business management SL Greek SL which one would be better? My level of German is B2-C1 so I won't have a problem.
  4. Hello! I need to make my subject selections for DP soon and I'm kind of conflicted between taking Business management or English Language and Literature HL. Consider that I'm already taking double sciences (Bio and Chem) HL, and I was initially fixed on Business HL but I'm scared it will be too much. Can anyone tell me which subject would be more tolerable to be studied with double sciences HL?

    Subject Selection Help

Hi, I'm currently in pre-IB and I have to choose my IB courses for next year. I know for sure that I want these classes: - Spanish AB Initio - Math SL - Economics SL - English HL - Chem HL For my last subject, I'm not sure if I should choose Bio HL or Art HL. I want to study dietetics in university. I was first going to choose Bio HL but we had a talk about classes with our IB coordinator and he said not to choose classes based just on what you think you'll need for university. So now I'm confused on what to pick. I enjoy both bio and art. I plan to study at a Canadian university.

What IB subjects should I choose?

I am in MYP5 and I am undecided about my choices. I want to either study in Portugal or the UK. I want to either to study finance or computer science. The subjects I want to take are: Economics HL Math HL Spanish B HL Portuguese Lit. SL Eng. Lang and Lit. SL Physics SL I am forced to do Portuguese and English. One has to be Lang. and Lit. and the other has to be Lit.. My first language is portuguese, and I do much better in portuguese than in english. Which one is harder though? Lang. and Lit or just Lit.? Do universities prefer one over the other? Is there a problem with taking three languages, or should i change spanish to something like History SL, or another science? Please answer honestly: Do you think that these choices are good for someone pursuing a degree in either computer science or finance?

    Subject Choices

Hi, I am currently an MYP student and the time to choose my subjects for next year is coming up so I just wanted some advice on what people thought of my choices and whether I'm biting off more than I can chew. For background knowledge about my subject choices, I'm aiming to get into a CS college. HL - Math, Physics, Computer Science SL - English, Spanish, ESS I know that chemistry is traditionally a subject for CS but I'm personally very bad with the subject and I've heard that HL and SL chem are quite difficult, and considering the fact that my HL's are already quite rigorous on their own, I wasn't sure if it was the best idea to add chem to the workload. I'm also not really sure about ESS yet, I want to take either ESS or a humanities subject that won't be as demanding as some of the other options. So I'm just wondering whether my subject choices are cohesive and whether I should be taking chem or maybe switching out ESS for a humanities subject? Thanks for reading.

    Help with subject choices

Hi guys, I'm in my 1st year of DP and our EE coordinator told us to start writing up a proposal for our EE. Now I have a slight dilemma with my subject choices: I really want to do either History or Visual Arts, however, there is an issue with both of them. History: I want to pursue a career in History and I was going to take it up as an IB subject but since we do not have a DP History teacher, I did not - would it be wise to do an EE in a subject that it is not a subject of mine and has a MYP supervisor? I would like to add, though, that I really do like History. Visual Arts: I'd like to look into art history but again we do not have a DP V.A teacher therefore it is not one of my IB subjects - would it be wise to do an EE for the same reason above? Furthermore, the MYP teacher that is available is not really adept in the English language and I feel that would affect my grade. As a backup, I have English literature, however, it's not really my favourite subject... All the same, I'd really appreciate some feedback! Thanks again
  9. Hey there, I am in the middle of 10th grade now and we have to hand in our IB Subject Choices in a few weeks. Until now, I have gotten a few ideas on what to pick for the IB, however I am not sure if this is ideal for law, or if it's maybe a bit too difficult... What I have come up with was: HL: English Language & Literature, History, Economics SL: Biology, German A Language & Literature, Maths SL Would be great if any of you could comment on improvements or changes I could make for my choices. Also adding a reason would be great. Thanks in advance

    Is this subject combination weak?

Hey guys! I'm starting IBDP soon and am thinking about taking the following subjects English A (Language and Literature) HL Spanish SL Math SL (Math HL is not an option for me) Business and Management HL Economics HL Biology SL I am 99% sure that I want to pursue a business degree after high school and am currently looking at applying to Canada (UBC, UofT, YorkU). I was wondering if taking both BnM and Econ is a bad decision. Do universities really prefer that you take only one of the two? Even if you want to do your undergrad in business? Thank you all.
  11. Hey guys, Basically I'll be starting the DP this September so I was just wondering if someone could help me out with my subject choices. For my undergraduate, I plan to do the Classics or Classical studies in the UK or USA and I have decided to do the following subjects: HL Subjects - English (language and literature) - History - French (language acquisition) ITGS SL subjects - Mathematical studies - Environmental sciences - Physics I couldn't make up my mind between physics and chemistry since I like them both but neither will be of any use in the future to me but all the same, I would greatly appreciate some feedback. Thanks again

    Help with my subjects!?

Hello! I'm a tenth-grade student planning on doing the IBDP for my junior and senior year. As we are beginning our second semester soon, we are required to pick out our subjects for IB. I had a couple of concerns as when I told people about the subjects I'm intending to take, they said I would face a hard time. I'm hoping to study engineering at university, hopefully, either chemical and biomolecular engineering. I'm also hoping to get into a top university as it would help me so much! The subjects I'm planning on doing are; -Physics HL -Math HL -Chemistry HL -Economics HL -English A Lit SL -Arabic B SL As you can see I really don't want to spend time on languages and I clearly want to focus on sciences and maths. If you have any concerns or advice I could use, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thank you
  13. I am wondering if this would be a good subject combo: HL Economics HL Biology HL English (not sure yet if I want lang & lit or lit) SL Math SL Finnish SL Chemistry Unfortunately I have no idea where I want to study after the IB, or what I want to study. I am wondering if these seem like subject choices that wouldn't close too many doors for me. The thing that troubles me the most is if it is "useless" to take HL bio without taking HL chemistry with it. I don't enjoy chemistry that much, but then again I've always had horrible teachers which has drawn me away from the subject itself. Though in the IB I would have a new teacher. I really don't know if I should take chemistry at all or if it is important. Thank you for any replies in advance
  14. I am currently enrolling in the diploma program and I'm taking math hl, physics sl and chem hl. I am wondering should i worry about the universities later and focus on my subjet choices that will get me through ib, or select my subject choices based on my targeted uni? Help

    English- Psychology dual major?

So I'm two months into my first year IB and our Head thinks that my subject combinations are odd. Subjects: HL: English Business Management Psychology SL: Environmental Studies and Strategies Math studies French ab initio My initial plan was to double major in English and Business and had Psych as a back up. But i soon realized i was more interested in Psychology than Business. Our school requires us to submit our final subjects according to our university choices. The head thinks that this combination comes neither in Arts-Humanities nor Commerce so therefore will not be accepted by the universities. She wants me to enquire at my selected colleges about them and reconsider. But these are the only things i'm good at and i have no other choices. College choices (most desired on top): Boston U UC Berkley, Upenn, Pomona. I guess I should ask there first but i just want to know what people here think. Is this a good dual? Will it be accepted? ...Cuz I really don't know what i want to in the future.
  16. I am an IB student in Denmark and I am currently planning on applying to universities in Scotland and Ireland I want to know if Math studies is generally looked down upon, even if you are applying to the humanities/social sciences I am planning to apply to either English lit. or History courses at Edinburgh uni, St. Andrews uni, University of Glasgow, University of Dundee, Aberdeen uni and Trinity college Dublin Will universities prefer Math SL students even if they have a lower grade?? (it's likely that I will achieve a 7 in Math Studies) Thanks

That's why Bio] Psych {SL} Thanks

    Subject Choices

I'm beginning the IB in September, and I've just been told I can't do my exact choices because they don't fit with the school's columns. My original subject choices were:English Literature SL, French B SL, History SL, Economics HL, Physics HL, and Maths HL. As I can't do History SL with French B SL I've decided to do French B HL, and now I need to decide between Physics and Maths to standardise (I've been told that these two subject are both really hard anyway so maybe this is a blessing in disguise!). I'm generally good at sciences and maths and have predicted A*'s in both at GCSEs but I'm not sure which would be most convenient to standardise to lighten my workload. Thank you!!!

    Subject Choice

Hi Everyone! I'm currently deciding which subjects to take for IB. I'm hoping to study Psychology at university and I'm unsure whether to take HL Business, Economics or Global Politics, alongside a definite HL English and Psychology. I was also wondering whether taking maths studies will put me back in any way when applying to universities! Thank you in advance!

    Subject Choices

So..since many people create this "Subject selection" topic, I shall do one myself. I live in Sweden and I'm also choosing the subjects until the 10th of February. I want to study medicine abroad (Mainly the UK) and in Sweden too. But I'm confused. The subject choices I was considering are: HL: History Biology English A (Language & Lit) SL: Chemistry Mathmatics Swedish A (To get accepted in Swedish uni's too) However, in the Swedish universities you also need to study physics. Which unfortunately I can't since a 7th subject is not recommended by my teachers. So....I wonder, are my choices good enough to study medicine abroad (mainly UK) and in Sweden? If not. What do I need to change? Have a nice day, IB - students.
  21. So, I'm starting IB in late August of this year, and have already chosen my subjects (our school forced us to last year, ugh). My choices: HL: Physics Economics English Literature SL: French B Mathematics Chemistry (might change to History depending on my grades in IGCSE, which are out tomorrow). Judging from my subject choices, what do you think I would/should be taking in uni? Or are my subject choices too off-track (and thus not indicative of me taking any particular field)? If the latter is true--do any of you have any recommendations on how I can be a bit more specific with my subject choices? I'm aiming for two things: a) to maximise my grades, and b) to fit the requirements of the universities I'm applying to. I would probably be doing Business/Economics in uni. As such I feel like the choice between Chemistry and History wouldn't matter that much. However, my true interest is to undertake a science/STEM course in uni, since I really like science (physics in particular--I would love to get a degree in any physics-related field!). However, I'm afraid it's rather out of the question seeing as I'm not doing Maths HL. I'm good at math, but probably not '7 points at HL'-good. I'm planning to study in either the US or Germany for uni. No particular university goals yet--practically speaking, of course. (Everyone wants to get into an Ivy League, but even if I did have the brains for it, I wouldn't ever have the funds.) If neither US or Germany works, I'm going back to my home country to study in the best university there, which grants automatic admission to IB students as well as credit for certain subjects (in that case, I don't really care what my subject choices are).

    Political Science subject combo?

I'm very interested in doing Political Science later on in uni. I was wondering whether my current subject choices* are good enough: HL Physics || Economics || English Lit SL Chemistry || French B || Maths Is it okay for me to be doing just one humanities subject? Or would certain universities require me to do History HL/SL as well? I've looked at some US universities I'm aiming for (I'm 99% likely to be applying to the US anyway) and they are a bit vague on the subject**, especially since they're not as strict on which subjects one has to choose, as they tend to accept students by looking at them holistically (quite unlike UK unis, which are far more exacting). Planning to get into any US uni. Not really planning to get into Ivy League unis because I'm a) poor and b) definitely not smart nor well-rounded enough. (That's all you really need to know, the rest of this is just nitty-gritty stuff which you probably /don't need to/already know, so you can skip the rest of this) I'm quite a science-y person and am also comfortable with maths which explains the 2 sciences and the decision to do SL Maths (I know I can get away with Maths Studies to get a humanities/social science degree in a lot of unis, but I am also trying to get a standing chance at doing a physics degree later on). (I do understand however that SL Maths is not accepted in certain universities if one wants to study physics, esp. in the UK.) *also; if anyone needs them, my IGCSEs were: Maths, English 1st Lang, English Lit, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, French, Business Studies, and Art. **The most specific info I could find about specific subject choices were in the form of lists of what some US unis ""recommend"" should be the number of years* that an applicant has done certain subjects in high school. MIT***, for example, ""recommends"" something like at least 2 years of social sciences, whereas Harvard**** ""recommends""--though I suspect that what they mean by "recommending" actually means "you most likely absolutely need to have done this"--3 years of history, "including European and American" (in which case I don't think I will qualify??) (Correct me if I'm wrong, though) ***I'm not expecting nor particularly hoping to get into MIT, but I'm using it as an example because their policy seems to be among one of the highest possible standards in the US. ****^ditto Harvard.
  23. So I'm currently in my last year of MYP and we have been given the whole IB presentation today and all. So I've been already thinking of what I want to do. And I'm really interested in Graphic Design. In our school they tell us to choose subjects that we like and will enjoy. I'm a person who stresses out quite easily I guess or well a negative thinker. I'm known as an organized student and all but I'm full hopelessness. But anyway, I've decided to do: Visual Arts - HL Design Technology - HL Unknown - HL Spanish - SL English - SL (I'm not sure whether to do Language & Lit or just lit) Math - SL Now for the unknown one, I really don't know what to do. It's the subjects from Group 3. In my school they offer, psych, business, history, econ and geo. I do know that I really don't like History or Geo, so that's out of my list. And I'm left with psych (which I find somewhat interesting, but I'm not sure what i'm going to be dealing with), business & econ (I'm not sure what i'm dealing with. But my dad suggests I take one of them as it matches up and all). I reaaalllly need help :\

    IB subject choices for law

Hello everyone!!!! I will be finishing my iGCSEs in the next month and need to finalise my IB subject choices. I am planning to study Law at university. As of now, this is what I've got: HL Chemistry HL History HL Psychology/ Economics SL English Literature SL French B SL Maths I am still deciding whether to do Psychology or Economics. I have very limited knowledge on both subjects (I did iGCSE business studies). I'm not sure which option will be more advantageous for reading Law, and also, which option is easier to get a 7? Also, I am aware that HL Chemistry is definitely not needed for Law, but I'm just interested in the subject; I have heard that it is extremely difficult to get a 7 in Chem, so would it be better to bring it down to standard and bring French B up to higher? I am not too confident in getting a high mark for English Literature so I think I'd be safer doing it at SL, would this affect my application as for Law? I would also like to ask: in the IB statistical bulletin, in most subjects, a higher percentage of people get 7s in HL rather than SL; do HL and SL subjects get marked differently? I'm not too concerned about how enjoyable each subject is to be honest, yes I mean if it won't be too boring I guess I'll be more motivated to work, but currently I am more concerned about marks and I am not afraid of working my butt off for it Thank you so much!!! (Sorry for so many questions!)
  25. Hello, I am going to start of with the IBDP in less than 6 months and I need some suggestions, opinions, and advice regarding my subject selection. I am interested in science and math. I loathe history and geography (no offence to ppl who like it). The commercial world too fascinates me. Kind of an odd combination but that's just me. I am selecting my subjects based on what I would like to study in the future (university). I am not sure if I want to pursue medicine or engineering. I want to keep both these options open. Based on this, here is my current subject selection: Math HL Chem HL Physics / Biology HL Eng lit SL Economics SL ( I would have taken it at HL but my school Does not offer it) Danish B SL I know the workload is too much but I think I am going to have to do it this way because I am not particularly good in the languages and there is no Eco HL which would have been a blessing, I know I need PCM (physics Chem math) for engineering and Chem for Medicine but I don't know if I will compulsorily need bio for medicine in maybe USA or Australia. Bit of a twisted situation here...any help would be greatly appreciated.
