  1. Sup people of the IB. I found a short guide that I wrote a while ago that deals with stress and procrastination. I'll add more to it later (the irony but it is late ) so hopefully it's helpful. There's more to come if I remember Stress Firstly stress at school is mainly caused by lack of organisation. So sorting that out could half or even eliminate your 'i want to rip the hair out of my head' feeling! How to organise work: Invest in a folder if you write notes with a note book and use folder separators to make things easier.This makes losing notes a lot less likely because they are in a named folder. Plus it makes you feel really professional If you're feeling that things are getting to you, just step back for a little bit and think. You don't need to be getting overly stressed because that hinders your work and can result in tears, this isn't helpful to your development because it lowers your confidence. Try drinking some water, taking a short break from revision or going for a walk. Clear your mind. Procrastination This thing is horrible. I hate it loads and i have a half decent way of sorting it out. Just know that you cannot get rid of it completely otherwise you'll probably end up not enjoying life. No one can seize EVERY SINGLE opportunity they have to work. It's just not realistic haha The reason why procrastination happens is because there are two parts of your brain that helps this. ( I cannot remember their names, forgive me for that) One part see's the short term benefit of everything, like going on facebook or staring into the sky. This part is much bigger than the part that see's the long term benefit of working now. Plus the long term benfit part (the determined one) gets tired quickly. Ok, imagine yourself as two people. 'present' you, and 'future' you. 'Present' you wants to put off work and say i'll do it tomorrow until your you've started everything too late. This would make you think, 'yea i promise i'll do it tomorrow but now i'll watch tv' or 'now i'll stare at pictures of yoda riding a cat'. Do you notice this trend? It happens a lot. What you need to remember is that, it isn't now you that will be feeling the consequences of your procrastination, it'll be future you. (i hope this is making sense so far) You need to look to future you and think that you want to have less work so you'll do it now. Procrastination isn't because you're lazy, it's because you're weak in the sight of distractions (that sounds mean but everyone gets distracted for the reason i stated above) Keep your work neat.You don't want to be revising and realise that you cannot read half of anything that you've written. Some care will go a long way.You don't need to write full sentences when making notes, just something that can remind you what was taking place in class.Try organising your work daily.This further reduces the chances of losing sheets and notes, hole punch it and keep it safe. You'd be surprised how much they can help Lessen the distractions!Disable facebook or move the facebook app from the homepage of your phoneMute your computer so you aren't hearing all sorts of notificationsClear the cookies from your computer so you have to enter your password in everytime you want to log into something (but make sure you remember them haha) This makes logging into stuff an added effort so you're more inclined to just not bother and start your work.And if you need to just ban yourself from IBS and TSR (if you use it too)Give yourself motivation!Put pictures up of what you want to achievePlan a little treat you can have ONLY if you've completed a certain amount of work... not if you've done something for a specific timeIt's too easy to say 'i've read for half an hour, time to chill'. You could've just been sitting there [*]Look into what you want to do and what you need to do to get there My next point is that not all procrastination is bad! So when you feel lazy instead of refreshing the facebook homepage, read an article from the news or a page from a book relating to your subjects. Plus don't mistake procrastination for having a break, breaks are good! they keep your sanity in tact Ok the end is here! After multiple facebook references, unnecessary emoticons, incomplete sentences and poor humour that is. I really do hope someone finds this helpful as this took me a while to write but maybe it'll be worth it Just remember, a little stress isn't bad and taking breaks isn't the same as procrastination. I'll be adding more to this as things come to me. **** Here is a prioritized to do list: PrioritizedToDolist.pdf You list all your tasks and label them A - F, with A being the most important and anything after D generally something you can put off until you've finished everything before that. Stay concentrated and it won't seem like that much of a daunting task!
  2. Hi, I just transferred into IB this year (grade 11) and am still adjusting to the school. I have heard rumors from grade 12s about how crammed their first semester is, and I am worried that I won't be able to manage my time wisely when I get into grade 12. I was going to take IB Japanese, but I had to move it to my grade 12 year because my Japanese is currently not good enough yet. For next year's first semester, I will have History, IB Japanese 11, Math HL, Physics HL, Chemistry SL, and English HL/TOK. I currently volunteer at a salmon hatchery and work part time at McDonald's. I am also on the cross-country team and track and field. In February, I will also start volunteering at a local hospital. So far, I have managed to balance my school life and my extracurricular activities, but I'm not sure if I can survive grade 12 without dropping any of them. Do you guys think I should drop an HL course, my volunteering, my job, or something else?? Also, please give some advice on time management

Also, I'd appreciate any help on how to survive my classes, but especially Math HL. I'm taking: Math HL, Physics HL and German HL and Modern Greek and Literature SL, Economics SL and Biology SL.   4. Hi everyone. I've written two short guides on IBS: Time managementPreventing and managing stressThe following is about how to create realistic plans. It's adapted from my blog. I hope it helps. There are two easy ways to create feasible plans: Pretend you have 30% the energy you usually have Copy a plan you’ve completed successfully beforeNote that I’ve left out the most obvious way – looking at a calendar and the things you have to do then filling up the hours. Why don’t we stick to plans? It’s simply too difficult For some reason, if we imagine a free day we imagine a lot of time. But we also assume our energy levels will match that. It often doesn’t. Cramming the day with loads of activities is only going to make you tired quickly and far more likely to stop doing them even in the middle of the day. If it’s a long term plan it’s even less likely to continue. We get distracted Distractions are a huge problem. As research shows, after a distraction, it takes about 25 minutes to get back into work. It makes our work far less efficient and moves everything in the plan forward. Therefore we work longer, become more tired and start putting things off. We don’t give ourselves enough time We might assume that we can get an essay done in 3 hours but sometimes we might get stuck which means we have to take a longer break. Or we can’t find the book we want. Same with side projects you might want to do after work/studying. If we expect to do all of them in a minimal time then we’re either going to drop them completely or reduce them drastically and feel guilty about it. We procrastinate Looking at a large plan for the day can be intimidating and cause us to procrastinate. Therefore we don’t do anything we aim to. Here’s one simple way to stop it. Making plans work Assume less energy than normalThis point relies on assuming you have less energy than your plan assumes. If we try being superhuman then get intimidated or worn out by our plan, it’s not a useful. On the other hand, if we’re more modest, we have a much easier starting point, procrastination is less likely and we will complete things. Let’s take one of the plans I’ve had in the past (and I’ve had many): This is actually a simplified version of a plan I had at one point in my first year of university. Looking back on it, it’s surprising to think that I considered it then even more surprising is that I was annoyed when I couldn’t complete it! Nearly 9 hours of difficult (and unnecessary!) work I had planned. That’s on top of being social, dealing with chronic pain and you know, trying to not hate books after my first week. The plan didn’t work for a variety of reasons: I didn’t have the energy to complete themI ignored other factors (like having friends and going outside)It was boringIt wasn’t flexibleCreating the plan with the mind that you’ll have less energy means you plan to do fewer things, increase flexibility and still complete things. So the plan above might turn into this (assuming there’s a 9am start): And that’d be it. The first plan has nearly 9 hours of mentally tasking work while the second has 4 hours with large breaks in between. It’s much easier to start and I found I got more work done with the second plan overall. Copy a previous plan.The second condition is easier to implement. If you’ve successfully created and completed a plan before, copy it and use it again. However, it’s important to take into account new factors when doing this because your past plan might have been completed under much different conditions. For example, if you’ve caught a cold, your energy is going to be lower than it would be normally so you’ll complete less work or it’ll take longer to complete the same amount. But remember to be reasonable. If you’ve planned an overnight stay at your library or a general rush till exams, you won’t be able to sustain it for a long period. To combat that, refer to point one. An impromptu Q&A session “But you’re doing so little work – this doesn’t apply to me!” Fortunately, it still does. If you’ve ever planned anything and never completed it (although you feel you should have) then it applies. Creating unrealistic plans is normal and unless you actually have unlimited energy, it’s fine to plan less and complete more. Dealing with chronic pain means I’ve had to change how I view plans and making my time more efficient. This is one way I’ve managed to stay with the crowd despite being in pain all the time. “But what if I can’t plan less! I have so much more work to do than you” That’s where the second condition comes into place. Not every plan can work on such little energy. Deadlines and loads of work exist. If you’ve actually completed a plan that meets the demands of your current situation, mould it around that. If not, continue to assume you’ll have less energy when creating it. And stop procrastinating. Yet, don't use this excuse to return to an unrealistic plan crammed with work from the time you wake up to the time you sleep. “What if I have scheduled commitments?” If you have a variety of things you want to do (clubs, learning new things, blogging etc), reducing the amount of energy you’ll have to complete it seems ridiculous. It isn’t. In this scenario, you have to exercise prioritising and say no to some commitments. If you don’t, there’s a good chance you won’t do them, get frustrated at the ‘little free time’ you have or burn out very quickly and blame yourself. Admittedly, it is difficult saying no to things especially when you seem to have a lot of time for trying new things. Those things won’t disappear straight away and there’s no point in planning them if you’re too tired to complete them. It’s alright to say no. This is a big thing for IB students. Especially if you feel that extracurriculars are extremely important. However, there are a few more things important than extracurriculars and even grades. Your health. Running on low energy and being on the verge of burn out for two years is damaging. It can have adverse affects like putting you at risk of depression and other health problems that happen as a result of stress. Take the time to assess your priorities throughout the school year and decide what you want and need to do. While the IB is a difficult time for many, you do not need to assume it'll be difficult and aim to fulfil that prophecy. "I'll try to do that but which would you pick, sleep, study or social life?" This is genuinely one of the biggest lies about the IB ever. It's sometimes funny to joke about how little sleep you get but there's nothing to be proud about when it comes to getting little sleep. You can have all three. I recommend you have all three. Studying is important for getting good grades. Sleep is important for every activity you do. Sleep debt is a thing. If you consistently go without sleep, it's not much different from not sleeping at all. For example, if you consistently shave 2 hours off your sleep for a week then at the end of the week, your attentiveness is the same had you not slept for an entire day. Socialising with other people can be fun and a welcome break from reading books all the time (which is inefficient since concentration levels drop throughout the day). Plan less and give yourself more time to enjoy your day. Your grades will thank you for it. “Am I allowed to continue working past my smaller plan?” Yes. A minimal plan makes it easier to start working. It doesn’t necessarily put a limit on how much you should continue working. Though, it should make you more efficient with the hours planned – reducing the need to continue working much more. The next day, return to the minimal plan. A good plan is sustainable. “I’m rubbish with times. What if I oversleep?” Ignore times and focus on activities. Instead of planning the hours, aim to work on a project for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. If that is too difficult, aim to do an hour of the project during the course of the day. The earlier the better of course as you don’t want tiredness to excuse you from working. “Did you write these questions yourself?” Some things are best kept secret. Action Steps The take away from this is to reduce the amount of energy you’ll need to finish a plan so it’s easier to start and easier to complete. What can you do now? Create a plan for your ideal day Assume you’ll have less energy than normal Create a new plan.A small amount of completed work is better than a large amount left wished to be completed.   8. Teachers say that completing the extended essay as soon as possible is a must, however seniors at my school think otherwise. Most of the seniors told me that it is better to wait till the end of first year so that you can putmore ideas and decide the topic.

  11. I'm in 11th grade in the United States, and I've just started the IB Diploma Program. It started out well enough, but now I feel as if I'm drowning in school work. I know that my teachers are disappointed in me, but I just am completely choking, and I don't know how to get myself out of this hole into which I've dug myself. Between IAs and my daily homework, as well as swimming on my school's team, and taking piano lessons, I feel like I cannot complete anything. And for my art class I'm supposed to be doing extra work outside of class... I don't know how to get myself back to an acceptable place with the workload that I have on a daily basis. I'm considering dropping, even though I truly enjoy my classes, and I really don't want to drop. I really just don't know what to do. Please help. Any advice is welcome.

I just started the IB diploma program and I just wanted some advice on how people juggled, CAS, getting really high grades (especially in math, english, and TOK/EE), a job, how you'd stay motivated, planning techniques you used to stay focused and manage time, and what skills you got from IB. I'm think what i'm most nervous for is english, math, french and EE I really want to get a 6 or 7 in these classes. mainly for these i'm looking for how you'd study for these courses and if there are any other resources that i can access that will help me do well in these classes (other than the syllabi).   14. I've been struggling to finish my work on time for many of my classes and I now come to help on IBSurvival. I have a History IA - which I've hardly started - and a Math IA - which I'm halfway through - due in February. Then I have a bunch of extracurricular activities and other tests that I have to take care of, and on top of this I have the IB exams. I had to stay up late yesterday to finish my homework and it's starting to become a habit. Even worse, our whole class is behind in English, where we are yet to start on our IOCs. On top of that, I keep trying to read literature and cannot finish it. I planned to finish A Tale of Two Cities over this weekend, but I didn't read a page. Frankly, I keep on procrastinating on everything and it seems like I have a bunch of things to do all at once. On weekends, I lack the focus and concentration that is required when doing my homework, and I end up staying up late most of the time. IB is starting to become a pain, literally, my eye hurts and I go to school late. I now it is rewarding at the end, but I am going through a very tough phase in the DP right now. Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I really need help on time management because I take Literature HL and it's very hard to send in my work as well as read thing on the same time as the reading schedule because i take a seven subject is is a needed for all thai student (thai education law, all thais need to study thai) and i need to invest my time in ESS homeworks and Chemistry HL which is making it very hard for me to keep up with my Lit HL class. are there anything i can do to fix this? and i'm considering whether i should change from lit HL to Lang and Lit HL because my goal is to go to a medical school and Lit wouldn't help as much so should i change my course? i really need help!!!
  16. Hello everyone My Name is Ahmed , I'm a New IB Student. So as you see the topic title is about "Sleeping" indeed most of us is having real problems with sleeping which would lead to a bad time management and not doing well in Studying the Subjects. I Would like everyone to share your experiences,the problems with sleeping you had and how did you react to solve this Disturbing nightmare. I will start. I usually finish my school at 2:30 PM ,I sleep at 4:00 PM , I tried a lot to wake up after 2-3 hours and I failed , I Tried not to sleep after school and then sleep 10:00pm and What happened is that I was so sleepy at 7:00 PM and i woke up next day 5:00AM AND FINALLY !! Today I made it , I Slept 4:00PM- 6:15PM , Please keep in mind that I Always Craps in a Sleep I'm planning to sleep at 2:00AM today. Regards. Ahmed Ali Ibrahem.
