  1. This is quite a long story but I'm going to make it as short as possible. So when I first got my EE form, I put English Literature as my subject and put my two suggested supervisors who are both familiar with the subject. However, I was given a completely different supervisor who bases her teaching on VA. Though she told me I can focus on any subject like History, English or VA since she majors on them on the first meeting I had with her. Moreover, the DP Coordinator a few months ago, asked what subject my EE was and I said English whilst I had already submitted a VA EE. I don't really know why I did that, I just didn't have a proper RQ at the time and my supervisor barely gave me any advice so I just went along with it so I could at least provide the EE Coordinator with some essay for the draft. But when I received the feedback for my VA EE, my SP literally made me change the whole focus of my research question, so I have to basically restart again before the final submission in four days. Instead of doing it on VA, I went back to my original EE subject which was on English Literature. I'm a lot more comfortable on basing my EE on English since I'm not very familiar with Art terms as much as I am with literary techniques. But the problem is that my supervisor is refusing to give me feedback on the topic because she claims she already gave her form in and it was based on my VA EE AND now she apparently can't mark my English EE because she hasn't taught English in her life before. (literally, the other person who has her for a SP did it on English?!?!?) Now the DP & EE Coordinator want me to stick with my VA EE and give the fees to change my registration from English to a VA EE. Like, I understand I made a mistake by submitting a VA EE when I wrote English down, but can't they just accept my new English EE and forget about the rest? I still have a few days to receive feedback, I don't really see what their issue is. So idk, I'm really confused. Should I just continue with making a new VA EE or just keep pestering them to accept my new English EE? My English teacher is willing to give me feedback for it, anyways. I seriously don't have time to fix the VA EE anymore, but with English, I'm a LOT more comfortable and confident doing it. Also, is it actually a rule to pay a fee of $500 to change the subject registration sent to the IB? My school insists that I pay for it.

I THINK I'M GOING TO FAIL MY EE

Hi Guys, I chose to write an essay on, 'To what degree did the acculturation of European standards into the arts of the Yoruba people during British colonial rule destroy their indigenous visual culture depicted through their sculptures?'. First of all, I am not sure on whether this is a valid example to focus on essay on. My supervisor who is also an examiner said it was, but honestly I'm not sure. what do you guys think? Also is anyone willing to proof read my essay and crosscheck to see whether everything is in check because I kind of do not trust my feed up and I really think that my score for the extended essay shall be D.
  3. Is it possible for me to do my ee on illustration? If so, what areas of illustration should I focus my question on? I am currently thinking of doing color-related or like the techniques illustrators used to create a certain effect that sort of topics.

    Visual Arts Extended Essay

So, I am planning on doing my EE in Art and I was thinking of doing the topic "How are American and Japanese art influenced by one another and how are they different?", or something along those lines. Is this too vague? Should I specify a specific area of art? Can I even use this topic? Any feedback and suggestions would be awesome. Also, my 2,000 words checkpoint is next week and I haven't started yet, so please help ASAP!

    IB VA Comprative Study Bible

Hi guys. I made this document about how to write a Comparative Study for VA, with the specifications for HL and SL. I based it on information I found everywhere online and the Pearson book for VA. Enjoy!
  6. hi, im only in ib visual arts and i was wondering if i wont be allowed to graduate if i don't pass the exam, regardless of my course grade. my grades were fine last semester (average in the 90s) but im almost sure ill fail the exam because of my vaj pages. my studies in college will have nothing to do with art, so that's not a problem either.

    2016-18 Visual Arts extended essay

Hey Guys, I'm quite stuck on how to write my introduction for the extended essay. The thing is that now, since we don't need the abstract, I'm wondering what words I can use to link or relate the methods and content that will be discussed in the essay with the research question. My art supervisor somehow cannot access the think IB web therefore I don't have access to any guide or sample EE. Does anyone know or have a link to a recent arts Extended essay? Thnx Kind Regards AZ
  8. Hi! I'm new to the website but I'm currently an IB1 doing Visual Arts HL. So far everything's going great but I'm wondering if there is a criteria guide that defines final artworks that one creates? I usually get 7s or 6s on my pieces, but I recently got lower this time and I don't know why. I wouldn't expect there to be such a guide, as art essentially has no limits, but I just want to know if there are certain points that we have to achieve for a good/suitable artwork, unless its all really up to the teacher's opinion with no explanation. Thank you in advance for any help at all! Appreciate it.

    THEATER ARTS FORUM 2016

Hey everyone, I've noticed that there is a lack of Theater Arts students on this website and I struggle to find help and advice for my Theater class. Today I decided to put that behind me considering I have been through a lot during my theater journey and decided it would be easier for me to just create a forum for the new Theater Arts students from 2016 onward. This forum will be a discussion point for everything Theater based from the Nov 2016 session and for the years to come (unless they change the syllabus again). Please feel free to ask me any questions that might concern you about the Theater Arts course as I am graduating this November so I've gone through the ups and the downs of being a Theater student.

    VISUAL ARTS ideas for themes?

Im having a hard time deciding on my theme for arts. I was thinking witchcraft but I cannot think of many pieces I could make related to it except from tarot cards. Anyone got any ideas for pieces or ideas for other themes?
  11. hi! i am writing an EE under the visual arts guidelines, with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and it's author, hirohiko araki, as my main focus. i need help coming up with good research questions. i love araki and his work and i would really love to write about it, particularly his most well known series, jojo's bizarre adventure, but i am having a bit of an issue on where to start. i am currently a junior, so i have a lot of time, but i would like to start considering these things right now. i would much prefer if you helped me while having at least a general knowledge of what jjba is or who araki is, but its fine if you don't! i appreciate any help given to me. sorry if i am doing something wrong or posting in the wrong thread or something! this is my first time doing something like this in a forum, aha. thank you for taking the time to read this and please have a nice day!

    Help with subject choices

Hi guys, I'm in my 1st year of DP and our EE coordinator told us to start writing up a proposal for our EE. Now I have a slight dilemma with my subject choices: I really want to do either History or Visual Arts, however, there is an issue with both of them. History: I want to pursue a career in History and I was going to take it up as an IB subject but since we do not have a DP History teacher, I did not - would it be wise to do an EE in a subject that it is not a subject of mine and has a MYP supervisor? I would like to add, though, that I really do like History. Visual Arts: I'd like to look into art history but again we do not have a DP V.A teacher therefore it is not one of my IB subjects - would it be wise to do an EE for the same reason above? Furthermore, the MYP teacher that is available is not really adept in the English language and I feel that would affect my grade. As a backup, I have English literature, however, it's not really my favourite subject... All the same, I'd really appreciate some feedback! Thanks again

    Retaking Visual Arts, Possible??

I am a 2017 May graduates and I did quite well, however, my art grade was not what I wanted or needed to get into the university that I wanted. I have spoken to my DP co-ordinator (who I don't trust in the slightest because she recently became the co-ordinator and was my teacher before that. Imagine the worst kind of teacher and thats only half the story). She has now told me that she's pretty sure that I won't be able to re-do the visual arts course and that she can't send in the different components either, even though we documented absolutely everything! So my question is: is she right?? and if she isn't could you perhaps send evidence so that I can prove it to her. By tomorrow. Cause we have a meeting tomorrow. I am aware that this is about as short notice as it gets, but it is not my fault. She hasn't responded to my emails even though she said she'd get back to me by the 15th. Thank you so much for any responses. Have a lovely day.

Using old photos in an art project

Hello, I'm planning on some art pieces and I want to use some old childhood photos in a collage type thing. Would I be able to do that, because they wouldn't have been taken by me or during the 2-year program? Also, I'm wondering if it's ok if I use reference photos from my friends that they've taken themselves. Thanks!
  15. Hey everyone! I'm a pre-IB student where I am going to determine what to study in the next 2 years. I want to be an architect.( I also think of Law and Psychology but not that serious so my first choice is architecture) My final choices: ENG HL TURKISH HL ??? HL MATH SL VISUAL ARTS SL TITC SL (Turkey in the 20th century) I have to take one more sl and hl but I can't decide. I can't take VA HL since my art teacher said you're not that good at it and also I have no courage to take Physics HL If I take Bio HL or Chemistry HL would it be a problem for me to be an architect? I've talked with my teachers and some said take the classes that you'd enjoy and some said take the classes that would be helpful for your carrier. I'm so confused. What should I choose?

    Plagiarism in the Arts?

Hello, I was wondering how does the IB check for plagiarism in the Visual Arts course (for the visual content, like photos and images). I take Visual Arts HL Photography, and I am just worried that some of my content might show up online because I tend to publish stuff on Tumblr and such. My friends reblog my content and it's a heavy chain of reblog-repost action. Do you think I'll fail my diploma? It has been getting to me lately. If caught, they do contact you first, correct? I mean, you must be given a chance to explain yourself after all. Someone help out a sister! I can't even focus on my exams...haha

Publishing my work leads to fail??

Hi, so I take Visual Arts HL (now Y13), and am preparing my artworks for exhibition 2017. Would I be in any sort of trouble if I published photographs, sketches, etc. onto the internet? For example, could Turn-it-in find it and penalise me (based on the same photographs, writing, etc.) even if the work was completely mine anyway? I understand that the IB is extremely strict when it comes to plagiarism, so I have refrained from doing so so far... but I had this idea a while ago because I think writing it out informally at first, maybe even presenting it online to an audience and getting feedback on techniques/processes etc. would be good for my final write-up/projects. Can anyone help me out here? >_<

  21. Hi! So I've decided to write my EE in visual arts. We have around 2 more weeks to make preliminary research questions or at least decide on an area of study. I'm from Russia and I've always been very interested in the time period around WWII - Cold War and I've recently found out about how CIA used the works of artists like Pollock, Kline and de Kooning as propaganda/weapon against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This spiked my interest greatly and I would love to write an extended essay about something that has to do with this. But I am not quite sure in what direction I should go and how I should formulate a research question. (Also at that time, during the 1950s, there was a movement in the Soviet Union called "socialist realism" which also served as propaganda as it showed communism in a very good light and depicted the perfect communist society. This movement seemed quite interesting to me as well) The ideas I've had so far are: "How was art used as propaganda for/against communism during the Cold War?" The problem I have with this one is: 1. The time period "Cold War" is too vague, so I was thinking of focusing on perhaps the 1950s 2. I am afraid that the essay with the question "how?" will become too narrative (is this correct? if so, what other word can I substitute it with?) "How/to what extent did art reflect the politics/ideologies of the US and the Soviet Union during the 1950s?" I feel like this option would be less narrative than the former, and allow me to focus more on the analysis of the artworks and the movements rather on actual politics. Something that I could do for an essay with a RQ like this would be e.g. taking 1-2 artworks from the US and 1-2 artworks from the Soviet Union that were created in that time period. I could analyse them and see how they "fit" the artistic movements I am focusing on (abstract expressionism in the US and socialist realism in the USSR). And of course, I could also talk about how these movements reflected the politics/ideologies of the US/USSR at that time: abstract expressionism = freedom/democracy, socialist realism = restriction/totalitarian regime. I am going to have the 1st meeting with my supervisor in around 2 weeks, but I'd love to hear opinions about all of this from you guys first. Should I continue brainstorming on this topic, or should I abandon it and go in a completely different direction? Which of the 2 "research questions" should I go for? Do you have any suggestions on how I could narrow the questions down further, or is the way they are right now more or less okay? Is an extended essay with such focus on politics a bad idea? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
  22. Hi! So as my title says, I am planning on writing an EE in visual arts, but there is a problem - I have not taken visual arts in the IB. I have been in love with art for as long as I can remember, my entire room is filled with prints and paintings from various artists and I frequently make art in my spare time. So yeah, I'm a giant art nerd. However, I am not that familiar with all the art theory (colours, lines, lightning, all the stuff I heard my VA friends talk about), and I wonder if that would be a huge disadvantage? Also, does the new change for the extended essay somehow affect how easy/hard it will be for me? (Because our teacher explained that now, there is more emphasis on the whole writing process and your enthusiasm, rather than the actual subject-specific content of your EE) I've only got to know that I could choose VA as a subject for my EE today, as we had our first "EE workshop" today, and I've been dying of excitement ever since. I feel like this is the perfect subject for me, as this is one of the things in life that I am truly enthusiastic about. I also already have some specific areas of study/preliminary research questions in mind, something I did not have for my other subject choices. So yeah, I have until Monday next week to make a final descision. Do you think I should go for it and maybe self study art theory on the internet, or is this whole idea stupid? My other EE choices were 1. English LAL and 2. Biology - but even though I love these subjects as well, I am in no way as excited about these two as I am excited about art :'(
  23. Ok so I'm stuck in a really annoying situation in my arts class. Basically over the course of the past year I've been producing pieces (mainly photographs) that include nude models and have encountered a few problems with my school when I expressed that I wanted to include these photographs in my final exhibition. Basically I was told to alter the pieces or I wouldn't be able to submit them. Whilst I understand they probably want to appease everyone (teachers, parents who may see the exhibit etc.) and avoid any sort of social faux pas, frankly, I found the experience to be patronizing both towards myself and the potential audience. Even more so because the images aren't sexual (no genitals are even visible) and they aren't even really "nude" because they are covered in body paint. Further, no other students found any issue with the images. Also the model is of legal age, gave permission to exhibit and all that jazz. Does anyone know if there are any official IBO rules on nudity in exhibition pieces? In general I really want to hear your opinion on the issue, for example do you think it was a different media the response would be different?
  24. Hi everyone, I am wanting to begin writing my extended essay and get the majority of it done in the week before school goes back. I am going to be doing my extended essay under the subject of Visual Arts and l am having difficulty choosing a specific topic/question. I have two ideas that l am keen about and l actually believe that l could incorporate psychology into both areas of research. Do l need to include a second subject into my extended essay if it is applicable? The two topics/questions are: * To what extent is art therapy healing for the mind, the spirit and the body of an individual? And * The art of propaganda and how it is manipulated by political parties The first question l found off a website offering ideas for visual arts extended essays. The second one l came up with myself. I'm not sure which one to choose and so l was wondering if someone could offer me their opinion. Also, if anyone has any advice on the extended essay in general and how to approach it and all that, that would be much appreciated. Thanks xx

Who grades what now in Visual Arts?

Who grades the comparative study, process portfolio, and exhibition? Is it similar to IA's in other subjects, where your teacher gives you a grade and other examiners just moderates it? Or is it different?
