  1. Hi all, I'm in year 11 right now and I'm starting IB next year. In terms of Language, I'm gonna to take my mother tongue as a Language A Self-taught (which is Japanese). For Group 2 subject, I have no idea whether I should take English A Lang. and Lit. SL or English B HL. (I'm saying English A Lang. and Lit because I read it's easier than English A Lit.) I'm not a native speaker, so I know that English B would be much easier for me to get 7. Do you even think I can aim 7 with English A? I'm not sure about this because I heard that taking English A would be a big advantages if I want to enter the university in England. Is this true? Do the universities like Cambridge and Edinburgh prefer international students to take English A rather than English B? Cheers,
  2. Hi all. Is it possible for Japanese student who is fluent in Japanese to take Japanese B rather than Japanese A? Thanks,
  3. Hey!! I am doing my EE in English language and literature and it's a category 1 and it is on The Perks of Being a Wallflower. My research question is "To what Extent were the books that were mentioned in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" had an impact on the mentality of the protagonist?" the thing is, I am starting to work on my EE but I do not know where to start. And I do not know if I have enough content for my EE!! Could I get some Guidance??
  4. Hello! I'm currently in the process of revision as I will be doing my French B SL exams in two days, but I am really scared about P2. I was wondering about what complex grammar structures I can use to solidify the content of my P2? I know that causatif, voix passif, subjonctif, and les pronoms interrogatifs are some. Are there any others? I want to get full marks for Criteria A of the marking scheme, so it would be really helpful to know how to achieve that.

    Subject combination

I am about to enroll the IB DP programme by the end of summer. I am a little concerned about my subject combination for being too rigorous. I am up for a challenge, yet a bearable one. In the future, I would like to study at uni in the US. However, I am not sure in what area I may want to study in. But I'm leaning towards Economics/Finance and/or environmental sciences. (Hence why I have both Econ and Bio at HL). Overall, I was wondering if you could share any thoughts on what you think about my subject combination. Is it reasonable considering my future plans? Also, as English is my second language, would you suggest me to do B or A2 at HL. Note that I will be having Swedish A2 SL as well. But please leave some thoughts based on experience regarding English B and A2 at HL. I am not that much into literature, to be honest I hardly ever read. But with the right mindset I could still be willing to learn the "literature" part, I just don't want to struggle too much with it since English (language-wise) has otherwise (so far) been a strong subject of mine. Could it in general make it easier to have 2 subjects in A2, since the structure may be similar, or is it easier to just have one A2 and the other one as B HL as the workload perhaps becomes less (?). Subject combination: English B / A2 HL Economics HL Biology HL Math SL Swedish A2 SL Physics SL Also, what topic did you write your EE on? Simply curious as I have no idea what EE's are all about. Oh and btw, is it possible to write your EE on a combination of two subjects? Thanks a lot!!
  6. Hello everyone! I'm currently going into the second year of my IB diploma and doing French SL for Language. I was wondering if anyone would like to become my buddy in helping me with my french essays as i write them. I seem to be doing something wrong every time i give an essay to my teacher because i'm not really improving. I would greatly appreciate this help if anyones out there. And if it's a native french speaker i would be very grateful but anyone with experience would do!!
  7. I am about to enter the IB DP programme by the end of this summer. Having to choose subjects, I am pondering wether to study English B or English A2 (language and literature). Swedish is my first language and I will study Swedish A2. English is my second language but I am fairly good at it and it has always been one of my stronger subjects. However, I am concerned with the "literature" part in A2. Reading isn't of my greater interests, so having exams related to literature could stand in the way for me to get a 7. However, as the course also includes "language" it might not be as hard? But I obviously don't know much about the subject as I haven't started the IB, therefor, I would appreciate it if you could share some thoughts based on experience. Btw, my other HL subjects are Economics and Biology. Thanks a lot!
  8. Hello, I don't know if this is the right forum to post in - but I'm starting my SL French course next semester in September 2016 through May 2017 and wanted to find someone to have conversations with on a regular basis to improve my abilities. I live in Ontario, Canada in EST (GMT+4). I was probably one of the worst french students in my french courses leading up to this and I definitely want to change this before next semester, and thought having someone to talk to would be fantastic in improving my skills orally. If you are having trouble learning English or Polish, I can definitely help improve your abilities in either language while we talk as well. EDIT: forgot to mention, this would be over Skype or some other form of web communication
  9. Hi guys, can someone help me creating my books list for Arabic A, I have already chosen works for Part 1, but I need help choosing works for part 2,3,4? someone plz help me!!! any suggestion would help?
  10. Hi, so I'm currently a 10th grader who studies in International School Manila and I'm planning to take IB next year. I've already made my choices for most of the IB groups however I'm having trouble choosing a subject for group 2. As I am taking A English Lit. SL, I am now trying to choose a course for my 2nd language. Being Filipino, I am fluent in the language however I have also been studying Mandarin Chinese for around 8-10 years coming from a Chinese school. Would you think taking Filipino A2 would be more beneficial for me as I would obtain a bilingual diploma or would taking Chinese B be a better choice as I have no problems speaking the language and from what I've seen, more recognized in universities around the world. Thanks!
  11. I have a question guys, I am currently taking Chinese A: Literature SL in Canada but I'm not sure for the oral exam if i can use Cantonese or mandarin? My mother tongue is Cantonese so if i can, that would be helpful. Thanks for all the help!

    English B EE Topic options!

Hi Guys, I am in Grade11 now and it is time to plan for EE. English B is my second choice and I would like to exploit literature works, not books, but films and TV dramas and analyze their culture value. While I am considering about the the American TV Drama 'Queer as Folk' which is about homosexuality. But I know I should narrow the topic into a specfic view such as the development of gay people living standards in the moderm\n society? I am just wondering how to excavate a proper view from these huge literature works. If there is any suggestion of other films or TV Dramas please tell me because I may happen to watch them. Please give me some advice and I really appreciate your help,
  14. I'm not sure if Higher Level is the same as A2. It's the second level of the language. I'm sincerely worried that I won't pass my Spanish oral this year. Last year, I almost failed the oral- and that was the lower level! Plus, the teacher this year speaks so quietly and fast that my class never knows exactly what is going on (not good, right?). SO if I do fail, can I still get the diploma?

    Extended Essay, A2 Literature

Hey guys, I'm doing my extended essay in English A2 and I'm having a real tough time figuring out which books and how the research question is supposed to go on to be about. I've narrowed it down to White Noise, Slaughterhouse 5, American Psycho and A Clockwork Orange. Any ideas, comments or in general HELP, would be appreciated. Cheers.
  16. Hello all, i am writing the written task and had a thought in mind, we have studied the meda and culture option and i thought of writing about the music industry and how it has changed relatingof the changing pop culture and so on. do you think it is appropriate to the option studied? thank you
  17. Hi, So, as most of you already understand, as a Language A2's IB student we need to create a written task, about particular literary works, which could effectively generate new ideas and convey critical responses in helping the student to explore the materials assigned even further. After deliberate consideration, i've decided to create an online forum or online discussion as my written task. Since i believe, a forum is a perfect place to generate diversities and selection of ideas regarding to my topic, seen from several perspectives or point of views. I used the movie adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and Steven Spielberg's "Amistad (1997), which have strong correlation with Edward Brathwaite's "The Arrivants A New World Trilogy RIghts of Passage Islands Masks" as the materials for the discussion, concentrating particularly on the issue of slavery presented within both works. I would like to kindly ask you guys to give your responses on this following question "How similar was the issue of the “powerful versus the powerless” presented in both works? For those who have never read or watch these works, feel free to comment or contribute anything related to the idea of slavery

    Written task: short story

My teacher has told me that writting a pastiche is difficult since you are asked to imitate the writing style of the original writer. I have decided to create a short story instead, with a clear relevence with a poem studied in class. So, I as wondering if you knew what the average score is for short stories? I'm not imitating anyone... but to know how "harshly" they grade a short story based on previous grades, that would really help me feel confident with what I'm doing Thanks.
  19. Hello, Did anyone do the topic "popular novels" in the English A2 "culture and media" option? It's in the guide, but our teacher is very reluctant to do it with us, because apparently there is very little material available. But I would really like to write the written task on this topic. Do you think that would be possible? Has anyone done that? I would be very grateful for any information about discussing this topic in class/ materials that can be used as a base for some discussion. Thanks
  20. Hello, I am beginning to write the cultural option related written task, however i am stuck. Because in my first written task (literary option) i used Mass communication (speech) for the second written task i must choose eather Poetic Communication or Professional Communication. Therefore thinking that poetic communication would be easier i thought of writing a Diary Entry of a teenage girl that talks about the effect that media has on her self esteem(body, identity etc.) Now do you think it is a good idea? and which odience should i choose? i was thinking of writing the journal entry for adults in a magazine to show the negative effect of media however i am not sure if it is realistic. Plus what language would be appropriate to use? Thank you very much for your help!

  23. Hey guys I have to turn in my first written task in a couple of days about war reporting and propaganda. My topic is the use of propaganda during World War 2 in America, but I'm not sure what type of text would be more reasonable: an opinion column (from the present time about World War 2) or an article written in the newspaper during WW2 to convince americans of being involved in the war? Hope you guys can help me I'm kind of lost. Leo
