I need your advice on this one guys, here's the somewhat summarized story: So I went to this IB school abroad for a year and came back home for the summer, turns out my parents ran out of money and now I've been out of school for 3 months and I'm still back home. IA's started about a month and a half ago and I was working on my history IA from home, Biology IA started and after talking to the teacher he told me the coordinator told him that I'm not allowed to work on them from home because of the "academic honesty" policy, they then asked my parents to give them another date; they did, and it's in 20 days, the school said that's the final delay date I can have and that if I don't get there by then I'm out and have to take 2nd year next year. I highly doubt my parents can can renew my visa, do what I need to do and get on a plane within that period of time, so I feel like the end is just inevitable. The thing is, now I feel like I've completely lost a chance at anything. I'm done, it's over...what's the point now? I recently got a message saying that even if I go over there on the final date I'm still not allowed to take the exams and I'll just be a "normal" student and will have to start my 2nd year next year anyways...what do I do? Go there anyway and waste my time? The teachers don't teach anything useful for the exams except for maybe 2-3, and even then they can't cover as much as independent studying could because of how big the class is. Aren't I better off spending hundreds of dollars and ordering the books myself and paying for the ridiculous shipping fee's and paying someone to let me print out all the past papers and just studying by myself at home? Then comes the issue of how stressful life is back home, it's nearly impossible to keep focus without something happening, or get distracted by all the different things to do, or procrastinate and cry myself to sleep because of how messed up everything is.
  2. Hi! I'm a Polish student currently doing pre-dp. Recently I've started thinking about my subject selection. I'm thinking about studying medicine (still don't know if in Poland, where higher education is free or abroad - if you know anything about obtaining scholarships for medical schools in Europe and/or Australia after IB go ahead and tell me), so naturally I will be taking: Bio HL Chem HL Math SL (or should I do Math Studies if I'm less than good at normal math program?) English B HL (heard it's an easy subject and great to kinda balance out Chem and Bio HL) Polish SL But I have a problem with choosing my humanities subject. I want to go easy on myself and choose the easiest possible subject from this group (not a lot of (from worst to best) 1)writing, 2)reading or 3)memorizing), what would you choose from these: Geo SL (heard from graduate who is now studying at Oxford that this one is easy) Economy SL (same as before but what stops me is my hate from math. Is there a lot math here?) Psychology SL (heard it's not easy at all but it sounds interesting) History SL (the hardest but on the other hand i do like history) Global Politics Let me hear your thoughts!
  3. Hey there! I'm a student from Poland and I'm about to start my IB Programme next year. I was wondering if anyone could help me with my subjects choices. The subject that is required in Poland is actually Polish and I want to take Polish SL. I also want to take Spanish HL and English HL and I'm sure about it. Now, I'm not quite sure yet about other subjects. I need to take Maths, but now I have no idea whether I should take it SL or HL? I've always had A's in Maths but I know that HL Maths is difficult and I just don't know. Especially that based on what I know, most tasks are "Prove this and that..." and I hate proofs. Then, about social studies. I was thinking about Psychology SL (if I took Maths HL) or Geography HL (with Maths SL). Could you tell me your opinion on those subjects? Tbh I think that I would like Geo more but I heard that in my high school Psychology's so much better, our teacher is really cool. I don't know whether I should take the class I like more or the one that is more fun, cause we I don't expect a lot of it in other classes. And, the last subjects (yeah, forget TOK) - physical sciences. I don't know why, but in my school we don't really have a choice there. We only have biology, chemistry and physcis. I would definetly take it SL cause I suck at all of them. And yes, my grades are good in those too (A's and B's) but I just don't like them. Which one did you take and would you recommend it? If I could I would also take Photography but my school doesn't offer it, so I have to deal with what they have. I would really appreciate your help and every single answer.

  5. hey guys! I'm going into the IB program this year, and I have 4 HLs and 2 SLs. 2 of my 4 HLs are Bio and Physics. I recognize that this is going to a particularly rigorous course selection, so does anyone have any advice? Just so you know, my other courses are HL Psych, HL English, SL Math Year 2 (took year 1 in grade 10), and SL French.
  6. I have to do my IA over the summer, and I have approximately a little less than a month to finish it. I have no clue what to do it on, any help? I know I have to choose something I'm interested in, but I don't know how to connect math to the few things I like. ex. reading, television, video games, food, death, candy, science. I really don't know what to do and would greatly appreciate any help/advice.
  7. First of all, hello! I've been lurking on this site for years but have finally decided to create an account.... Anyway, I've just started on my EE and my title/topic has been approved. I tried writing a 1K word draft for my supervisor to check so I'll know if I'm on the right track, and they told me that it'd be better if I rewrote the entire thing due to various reasons, two of which were: 1) EE is, of course, a research paper first and foremost. My supervisor said that the draft sounded too much like a book review. 2) Basic vocab and grammar (I'll work on this). In any case, the most trouble I'm having is with the way I'm writing the essay. My topic is on how experiencing different religious beliefs (and, in turn, the different characters in the book) helps shape the main character's character development. Of course quotes + basic analysis are necessary, especially about how each religion affects the character, but other than that I'm confused on what to write about......any advice on how I should proceed with the "research" part of the essay? Thanks in advance! (If anyone ever replies to this.)
  8. Hey, So I am beginning to prepare for the next school year next year (pretty early, I know) which is the year I will start the MYP/Pre-IB program. I'm currently trying to figure out what I'll be needing for note-taking and such. Here's my plan as well as my courses: - English (1 A4 hole punched notebook) - Mathematics - Grade 9 (1 A4 hole punched notebook) - Mathematics - Grade 10 (1 A4 hole punched notebook) - Science (1 A4 hole punched notebook) - Canadian Geography (1 A4 hole punched notebook) - French (1 A4 hole punched notebook) - Instrumental Music (A hole punched folder) - A planner/calendar - And a large fabric, zipper binder so I can put all the notebooks, folders, or loose papers in together. My 2 questions are: Would it be wiser and more organized to take down all my notes in the notebooks and use loose leaf sheets of paper for all my exercises? Should I use notebooks at all? Or should I use a bunch of binders instead (I've heard a lot of people used separate binders for each subject in IB)? If not then what do you think I should use? Thanks in advance
  9. Hey guys, So, I have been having trouble regarding my class choices... I, initially, chose Bio HL, Econ HL, Lang.Lit. HL, History SL, Math SL and Spanish B SL. I have started to realize that my classes don't really match up (at last in my opinion), for instance, Bio HL doesnt really match up with the rest of my classes. Anyway, I was wondering if it would be smarter for me to switch from Bio HL to Enviro, then switch History SL to History HL? The reason as to why I am not switching to Bio SL is because it doesn't match up with my schedule. A follow-up question that I have: Does ESS look bad on university applications and will it make my application less competitive (also considering the rest of my classes) ? Thank you so much!

  11. Hey, for my Extended Essay for History I want to write a comparative essay on Lenin and Stalin and the extent to which they followed Marxist ideology. Is this considered "trivial nature"? Also, how would I frame my question. I also want to utilise case studies from Hitler/Mussolini's reign to demonstrate that a lot of their policies were similar or even the same as Stalin/Lenin's. Some ideas I had were. How successful were both Lenin and Stalin in following Marxist Ideology? To what extent were both Lenin and Stalin implement Marxist ideology after the fall of Tsarist Russia in 1917?
  12. Hello Everyone, As a first year IB Student I only have one IB exam, and thats my one-year (at most schools two-year) taught ITGS SL course. We've gone through most of the content, and most of it is not that hard. But what are techniques and ways I can actually prepare for the exam-questions? I know the IB is especially specific about HOW you answer certain questions, rather then WHAT (at least thats what I think). So some people expect 6's, but they get 5's or 4's. How do I prevent that? and how can I train myself on my own to get good at answering these exam questions, and get that 6. I have a week vacation in which I will spend most time getting prepared.     So I have noticed a lot of threads are like, "here is some things that I wish that I knew in the IB" and then they proceed to tell you to not procrastinate, and to get enough sleep, and to get organized, etc. We all know you are going to procrastinate and do all those things no matter what we say. This thread is for those times when things get down to the wire and you need to do something really important. So post any, lets say, unconventional, life hacks for everyone else out there. These are mine: 1) They sell legit caffeine pills, so if you need energy and coffee isn't doing it for you any more, try some of those. 2) If you need to study and happen to have access to a printer, a laminator, a printer, and some clear tape, you can laminate a study sheet, stick it in a sheet protector and tape the sheet protector shut to study in the shower/bath tub. If you have some expo markers too you can write stuff on it and erase it later. 3) If you put an app called NoteFlio on your graphing calculator (I have a TI-84 Plus, I don't know if they have it for other calculator types) you can make notes to yourself on your calculator in class. It's really hard to type on it though, as you are always having to hit alpha and then a key so you can't go very fast. So those are mine. Post yours below.
  14. Hi guys, So I'm starting to stress a little since I have to finish my EE proposal by tuesday and I'm yet unsure what topic/subject I should do it in. I know I'll be doing it in one of my HL subjects so therefore either English, Geography or Theatre however I haven't been able to decide which yet. Although we're often told to focus it on an area related to what we want to do in uni, I will be studying in spain where they don't take the topic of EE into consideration and therefore all that is valued is the points. Are there any subjects of those three that are perhaps easier to score higher in? Since I have recently been to an MUN conference abroad, I had to debate about topics of global importance and one of the issues in my comittee was "eradicating the practice of child marriage", I became highly intrigued by the issue of child marriage in different regions and thought that I could maybe orientate this towards geographical patterns and base my EE around this topic, however right now this is obviously extremely vague. Any suggestions on how I could link this topic more to geography in order to be able to use it for my extended essay? Thanks in advance, I'd be more than happy to take any advice or suggestions.   15. Hi guys! I am currently in the second semester of DP. I have good extracurricular activities. I did graphic design and science writing for a couple of international magazines (one in Spain and one in Lahore) and I will soon get my Periodic Graphics featured on University of Waterloo's magazine Chem 13 News. As soon as I return to school from the Spring Festival break, I will start a STEAM (STEM+Art) program with BUCT-RSC Chemistry Outreach Centre to create materials for institutions, Chinese science media and science/chemistry workshops mainly for teenagers. I will also illustrate (and probably edit) an astrophysics book which I heard will be reviewed by an Oxford professor and published. However, as I have lots of extracurriculars, I don't bother getting really high percentages for IB tests. For subjects like chemistry, design, Spanish, something that could be transformed to a 7 would be OK. And I don't really bother a 40/42. I can get a 39, but I am really not that good at math and I don't want to squeeze lot of my EC time to study math really hard. People are really emphasising on GPA here (like they say GPA is the most important thing; univs are going to admit the students with the best scores, not better extracurriculars; better ECs could not secure you a better place). I don't quite agree with them; I want to follow my unconventional passion in promoting STEAM education and be really outstanding at it. But I don't know if what they said are true. And I also don't want my teacher to get disappointed with me as I get lower percentages because of the ECs. What do you guys think?
  16. So next year I will be going for my IB Honors diploma and need help on deciding what to do and how to do it. I have two problems: Action and creativity hours. For action, I am generally nonathletic and am shy and do not know what to do. I am thinking about joining the swim team because of many friends. Also I am thinking about taking parkour classes but fear I would be alone and awkward. If anyone has any better or easier options that would be appreciated. For creativity I want to know if I can count the art I do at home someway. Since I know I need a supervisor but cant use my family, I dont know what to do and want to know if the art I do at home can count somehow. Also I am learning to code, will that work? Any help is needed
  17. Hi, I'm doing my Math HL IA on finding the volume and surface area of a frustum (from a cone). I'm determining the volume in three ways, out of which one is integration. I'm calculating the surface area in two ways, one of which uses integration too. However, though the formula for surface area is out of the HL syllabus, I feel like this is a very simple idea, and might not fulfill the 'Use of Mathematics' criterion as formulae for the volume and S.A. is available online. My Math teacher says this is sophisticated enough, though I feel the opposite. I would like an opinion on this topic and whether I can do anything else to make this topic more sophisticated.   18. Hi everyone, I was curious if you guys could give me some advice on how to maximize my points for the IA that I have. It's due in one day and I'm retouching it but I have a few concerns. I have a pretty edgy topic that ended up not going too much in my favor for reasons out of my control (but I didn't want to switch topics because it was too late). It is a database IA, so no procedures or such. It is on the effect of electronegativity gap between atoms in diatomic covalent and ionic compounds on the melting point of those compounds. I talk a lot in my background about intermolecular forces, lattice energy, etc. What I ended up discovering was that there really was no noticeable trend due only to electronegativity gap increases which created stronger dipoles. I read into this and it appears that it had to do with the atomic radius and ultimately the distance between the atoms in the compound itself. Thus, since electronegativity and radius are both fundamental properties of elements, it's sort of impossible to isolate either of the variables due to the fact that they are both present in Coulomb's law. My question is that since my hypothesis was that there would be a trend due to the electronegativity gap, is it ok that I'm wrong if I explore the reason for my error? I decided that I could choose three or so compounds with similar distance between the atoms to keep that more or less constant and then see the effect of electronegativity increase on the melting points. Is that a suitable path? Also, since I am wrong in my hypothesis, what would I put for error since really it's kind of the entire thing? I don't expect to get full marks simply because of the topic's inadequacy, but I'd like to maximize my score and get at least a B (6). Thanks!
  19. Hi! So my Latin mid term assessment is around the corner (in two days), and I have no clue what Im doing. Grammar has never been my strong suite at all, even in English, my native language. Ive taken five years of spanish and two of Latin and grammar has always been my downfall. As latin is a mandatory four year requirement at my school, I cant drop the class, which leaves me in a ****ty position. Its my only c, and if i cant bring my grades up it'll be my first c, and my asian mom is not gonna let that **** slide. Any thoughts on how to improve Latin translation skills quickly, quick translation tips, or quick prayers to the gods for my grades? Thanks bb Ducktape
  20. I'm currently working on my EE in history and I feel like I'm spending more time on it than necessary... How long did it take you to finish your extended essay and what subject did you do it in? If you happened to do an EE in one of the group 3 subjects (ie. history, economics, world religion etc.) how long did it take you to research vs actually writing in terms of hours or days??
  21. I'm currently writing my extended essay in History, and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has already written it that would be willing to share their experiences? For example, how did you choose your research question/topic? How many sources did you read vs how many did you actually use? How did you collect your research and then how did you transfer it onto your essay? Anything that relates to the process of completing your EE! Your wisdom will be SO helpful as it can help us (those who haven't finished it yet) see that the EE is doable instead of a daunting mountain that seems impossible to climb! Also your past hard work and experiences can be put to more use
  22. Hi fellow IB students, I reaallyyy need you help!! I was told today that my BIO IA is too easy to be an IB IA. My project is on weather different concentration of soap better eliminate or kill bacteria found on our hands. Since it was too easy we started talking about changing my project to finding out how long does it take for bacteria to be eliminate on a wet rag put in a microwave (it is known that that method eliminates bacteria). However since that study has been done before I would have to add another factor... We thought about putting it in a microwave where we can adjust the temperature however I don't have it and it would be a hassle to have to by a new microwave. We also considered seeing what affect soap would have on that process but that was shot down... WHAT DO I DO!!??!! Would really appreciate any suggestions! Thank you! Fellow IB student.

My subjects are: English HL, Biology HL, Physics HL Chemistry SL, Arabic SL and Mathematics SL Honestly this website is terrifying me as I think I'm starting to realize what I've gotten myself into.
  24. Hello all, first post so apologies if this is in the wrong section. I'm currently part of the IBCP (Career-program) in field of art, having just started IB2. However, I am currently thinking of switching to medical for various reasons, and would need to drop to DP and catch up on Chemistry, Bio (HL) and Math (SL), and probably switch from English L to L&L (as Lit is too confusing, even with a PG 6). So four subjects to learn. The remainder 2 subjects I'm quite confident in. I am not 100% strong in sciences/math (personally know I'll enjoy physiological and anatomical aspects more in med school) but have been offered to go to tutoring to make up holes in my foundation for those subjects in order to get my foot into the university door. I don't quite self-study well, I'm probably better working with someone/a teacher. Friends and family are split between my options, and further split between if I'm suitable for medicine or not. My options currently are to go back to IB1 and start immediately in Year 12 (catch up on everything/relearn and graduate a year late) or to finish the CP and continue on to foundation/A-levels/SATS to meet the non-IB requirements, as the CP would not meet the IB requirements, even with a graduate entry. Fees to do the one year foundation (not sure about A-levels but must be approximately the same) are the same as re-doing IB and I will also need to do the UKCAT. Quite limited in terms of choices using the IBCP, plus international student status. Deadline to register for UKCAT is over anyways, I think. So I'd like to ask for your view as a stranger on this situation. What should I do? Additionally, do you think the medical schools will care about the change?(Quite competitive and academic-oriented but they also allow for graduate entry/entry from other fields as long as you meet requirements.) Even if I were to stop pursuing medicine, would re-doing the IB be better options wise? Current cost for one year at the university I am attending is six years at a local one, so finances (and being only child to support parents and family) have to be taken into consideration as well. My deadline for an answer is due next week (this situation has also unfortunately impacted everyone around me and caused a lot of strain). I will be calling the medical schools I wish to attend tomorrow morning on whether this will impact my application (especially as my reasons for career change relate to the CP program and my experiences). Thanks for any help that can be offered!

Hey guy I've started doing my extended essay on feminism in Jane Austen's literary works an my research question is "TWE can Jane Austen be considered a feminist writer ?"I've started by analyzing pride and prejudice and the feminist themes, I will do Emma and Sense and sensibility as well but It says in the guid ]lines that I need a deep understanding which has got me a bit concerned, I still have to analyse two texts . I'm looking for any advice about similar experiences and how people dealt with them. thanks in advance.
