  1. Hey, I'm writing my ToK essay now and I don't really understand what Problems of Knowledge are. I know what it is about more less, I read some posts about them but I have no clue how to write my essay as each paragraph must be based on one PoK.
  2. Working on my presentation topic and I'm interested in working within art. I'd like to discuss the function of language and art within poetry, but when I brought it up to my teacher, he seemed iffy about whether literature falls under art as an AOK. In class, we discussed art mostly in context of visuals -- paintings, sculptures, dance, etc., so I'm just honestly not sure if lit counts. What topic our presentations fall under dictates the week that we present in my class, so I'd prefer to know sooner rather than later what direction I'm going in here. Thanks!
  3. I want to write a TOK presentation question about Human Error. I had something along the lines of: To what extent can human errors negate the theoretical backing of the natural sciences. My RLS was the Jeju-Daegu air korea plane crash - where the crew were negligent and forgot to read all 12 steps of the safety procedure plan - resulting in a crew miscommunication leading to the crash. What are some other questions related to human error? Is the scope of my TOK presentation a realistic one?
  4. Hello all! So I am beginning my TOK Presentation and I am a bit confused with what to do with my question. My RLS is the Top-Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point and my personal experience in 8th grade riding it. Although a parent somehow persuaded me to get on the ride, I was extremely fearful to the point that I would not look or talk to anyone. Logically, I could have used inductive reasoning to come to the conclusion that I would not get hurt on this ride: no one had ever fallen off, the worst accident was metal flying into a few people's faces which happened only once, and other than that, the most frequent accident was people rolling backwards on the ride. Additionally, I could have had faith in the assumption that the physics of the ride had been tested thoroughly, and thus I was protected. However, I experienced a lack of faith in this reasoning and thus began to fear for my life. After the ride, however, I had so much fun that I realized there was nothing to worry about. A lack of faith had brought me to an incorrect conclusion that I would somehow get hurt. With acrophobia being an extremely common fear among individuals in the world, it seems there is a disconnect in our logic of the safety of rides versus how far we believe in this logic. Without faith, then, this reasoning does not exist, and we are brought to different conclusions. Thus, my knowledge question is this: "To what extent do we need faith to develop our reasoning in the natural sciences?" My teacher said that this was an okay question, but I am still confused on how to go about a question which focuses on a specific area of knowledge. I do not want this presentation to end up being a scientific presentation on what physics or chemistry or biology is and the details of the science, or what not. I do not have clear perspectives yet, but my idea for the first one is that "Without faith, our reasoning is distorted and we are brought to incorrect conclusions." How do I analyze a knowledge question on a specific area of knowledge without it getting too narrow? Thank you for all your help!
  5. Given access to the same facts, how is it possible that there can be disagreement between experts in a discipline? Develop your answer with reference to two areas of knowledge. Hi guys, i do not know how to answer this question, any ideas on how to start?
  6. How many WOKs and AOKs should you include in the TOK presentation?
  7. I got my TOK presentation coming up and im stuck at the planning. So my question is that do I really need to include any WOKs in my presentation. I have used a couple of AOKs (and have explored a few more to show how conclusion fits to other RLSs). But I cannot seem to fit any WOKs in because my persepctives do not direct me to any. So can I just explore the different perspectives from different AOKs only. Or do I have to have WOKs also??
  8. Hello! if my TOK presentation's RQ is to what extent can we understand love, and my AOK is religion, how can I better do it? For example, I want to take Buddhism and Christianity, can I just compare their views on love? Would it be enough? It's just I don't really get the concept of making the presentation when you need to answer your RQ by AOK. How can I answer my RQ just by comparing to religion views?
  9. So I have a KQ- To what extent is natural sciences objective? (objective as in free from personal bias or interpretation) My two perspectives would be a) that the aok knowledge is more objective and b) the knowledge is less objective. What is it in the knowledge framework or WOK that makes these two perspectives different? Is it the link to personal knowledge or scope/application? Or a WOK like emotion that influences the objectivity of the knowledge?
  10. The ToK essay question I chose says to "explore this question with reference to two areas of knowledge.” Would I lose points if I used 3 areas or would it be okay?
  11. In my TOK Essay I have covered the AOKs of mathematics, history and geography. For history I have used the quote "History is written by winners", developing the concept that countries who have won different wars have had much more power in the distribution of information on the war. My TOK teacher said the quote is trivial. What do you think about it? Is it appropriate?
  12. Hi, “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.†Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge. What do you guys think about title 1? By reading the question I understand that it's asking you to explain the idea of how the WOK's link together to help you understand the knowledge in the AOK. I am finding it difficult to find arguments that oppose this idea and disagree on it.. do you have any idea, perspectives, opinions, whatever.... any help is appreciated!!
  13. Hello, IBS! I'm having trouble doing my final TOK homework. I'm already finishing the course but still know nothing about the Arts. Can someone help me? The key term: Patterns 1. Define the key term for the corresponding area. 2. Explain in detail how the term is understood and used in each Area of Knowledge. What is the role of the key term in the corresponding area. 3. Involve the ways of knowing and explain how they enable the understanding of the key term: use only the ones that you consider to be relevant to the key term 4. Where relevant specify the disciplines, i.e. Distinguish between specific Human Sciences (psychology, economics, etc),; Natural Sciences (physics, biology, medicine, etc.); Arts (literature, visual arts, theatre, etc); Mathematics (pure, applied)
  14. Hi guys, I was just wondering if we are allowed to say AoK instead of area of knowledge in our ToK essays. Any help would be appreciated.

This is my first time writing an essay for my ToK class, so any help would be really appreciated. And my main concern is that can we use movies as real life examples?? 18. I need help with my introduction... I chose the second prescribed title : “There are only two ways in which humankind can produce knowledge: through passive observation or through active experiment.†To what extent do you agree with this statement? For what I have in my intro so far doesn't really specify specific areas of knowledge, because honestly I could talk about all of them. I'm not sure if I should... So the question is: should I pick a few specific AOKs to talk about or can I not specify/do a lot? THANK YOU SO Much guys!!

  24. I am doing a practice TOK essay on the topic: “The vocabulary we have does more than communicate our knowledge; it shapes what we can know”. Evaluate this claim with reference to different areas of knowledge. The title says that I have to refer to different areas of knowledge (at least two, I'm assuming). I already have some good information for human sciences. My problem is that I can't think of claims/evidence/examples for any of the other areas of knowledge. Art is my first choice for my second AOK but I have no idea how to start or what I should try to look up. Any suggestion? Thank you Ally
  25. I'm starting to do my TOK presentation on the extent of the SAT being an accurate predictor of success in college/university. My knowledge issues are: 1. How does one test for knowledge? 2. To what extent can one use knowledge of the past to predict the future? Are these KIs okay? How do I incorpoate WOKs and AOKs? For the first KI I was thinking of focusing on the AOKs mathematics and the arts, since these are areas that the SAT tests for. But I have no idea how to incorporate WOKs here. For the second question, I was planning on focusing on the human sciences and citing perhaps a psychological study...but I can't seem to find one anywhere. Again, here I don't know how to incorporate WOKs either. Basically I'm very lost right now, as my teacher is very new to IB TOK (this is his first year and he was only notified that he was teaching this class two weeks before school started.) We've only really started touching TOK presentations in the last couple of weeks . I would really appreciate any help at all. Thank you.
