  1. Hey guyss~! ^ ^ Just need some advice on my extended-essay RQ for art. So as of now, we are in the process of finalizing our research question and by next week, we are to create an outline. My research question is, "How did Edgar Wright translate the stylistic features of the graphic novel, Scott Pilgrim, into the film, Scott Pilgrim vs The World?" My EE supervisor was satisfied with the RQ. However, she advised me to narrow down the term "stytlistic features". Just having trouble here since I want to make use of art terms to further support the subject base of this EE which is Arts. Any advice or recommendations ? Thanks again~!! ^ ^ Gladly appreciate the help
  2. Hey there, This is my first year of IBDP, and I've chosen Visual Arts at an SL level. We're already in our 3rd month of the course but our teacher is bit of a snob and frankly, I can't figure out what to do with this subject. I'm supposed to come up with a theme for all my SL artworks by monday, and based on that theme prepare a draft sketch of a installation we are supposed to make before December. I've thought about some theme ideas and this is what I could come up with: Desolation: How alienated and desolated we feel from our surroundings. Out of place: Being different from how society demands us to be. Wild Desolation: How animals are driven to desolation with the advent of humankind. I'm not sure if something like this will work, given the hideous pressure of making an installation in under a month. I'm real freaked out! If only someone somewhere out there can give me a direction. Thank you!
  3. Changing Subjects

Hi. I am just now entering my second year of IB. I am taking chemistry SL & psychology HL (online) and would like to change from both. Throughout last year I unfortunately didn’t take psychology that serious and am finding difficulty in it (my expected grade is probably going to be very low). And for chemistry, its hard and it’s going to require more effort than necessary. So I wanted to change from chemistry to arts (since my school finally has arts this year) and from psychology online to film online. Since I have a strong background in both, is it possible to do them both in the second year?
  5. Hey, Anyone starting IB 1 in September 2019, what are your choices? I'm taking: HL Music HL English Literature HL History SL Maths SL Italian SL Physics
  6. Hey everyone, I've noticed that there is a lack of Theater Arts students on this website and I struggle to find help and advice for my Theater class. Today I decided to put that behind me considering I have been through a lot during my theater journey and decided it would be easier for me to just create a forum for the new Theater Arts students from 2016 onward. This forum will be a discussion point for everything Theater based from the Nov 2016 session and for the years to come (unless they change the syllabus again). Please feel free to ask me any questions that might concern you about the Theater Arts course as I am graduating this November so I've gone through the ups and the downs of being a Theater student.
  7. Hello! As I am in years 10, I am working on my personal project which consists in creating a perfume for young girls between 12 and 19. Here’s the link to the survey. I would really appreciate any answers, thank you ! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JMGBYWX

  9. Hey! I'm thinking about my subject choices and I'm intrigued by theatre and visual arts. However, I'm scared they'll be seen as "soft subjects" in uni. Is this true? I'm thinking about either taking one of the art subjects or then global politics. Also, how would you describe the differences between visual arts and theatre? Is one harder or more time consuming than the other? Any and all experiences and tips are welcome!
  10. Hello, I was wondering how does the IB check for plagiarism in the Visual Arts course (for the visual content, like photos and images). I take Visual Arts HL Photography, and I am just worried that some of my content might show up online because I tend to publish stuff on Tumblr and such. My friends reblog my content and it's a heavy chain of reblog-repost action. Do you think I'll fail my diploma? It has been getting to me lately. If caught, they do contact you first, correct? I mean, you must be given a chance to explain yourself after all. Someone help out a sister! I can't even focus on my exams...haha
  11. So I am currently taking psychology SL. I don't like the subject, our teacher doesn't know ib psychology very well and the classes are just a mess. I also feel like I don't understand anything and everything just sucks. I was thinking of switching to visual arts instead if I'm allowed. Is that a terrible idea? Could I possibly catch up on their work? I know they haven't done a lot yet, and I'm also prepared to do a lot of work seeing as this is something I really want. Thanks in advance.

  13. Hi, so I take Visual Arts HL (now Y13), and am preparing my artworks for exhibition 2017. Would I be in any sort of trouble if I published photographs, sketches, etc. onto the internet? For example, could Turn-it-in find it and penalise me (based on the same photographs, writing, etc.) even if the work was completely mine anyway? I understand that the IB is extremely strict when it comes to plagiarism, so I have refrained from doing so so far... but I had this idea a while ago because I think writing it out informally at first, maybe even presenting it online to an audience and getting feedback on techniques/processes etc. would be good for my final write-up/projects. Can anyone help me out here? >_<
  14. Is anyone else confused about their arts results?
  15. Just started with my comparative study. Question is how do you make "screens", and which size should it be A3? A4? or just a PPT slides?
  16. So hey guys, I have been struggling with my Extended Essay on Film. I have researched a lot on the director and on the movies I am going to talk about. My previous RQ was: How did the Director develop his use of filmic techniques to portray the detrimental effects of war on the individual and society as a whole within each film? The thing was I realized I had not have an exact thesis to guide my work like I was basically wandering and throwing a few cool terms to the work. Also, the war impact on people and society is kinda puny. So, as my supervisor advised me, my work, more than focusing on the cinematography, it had to explore one thing that I knew of and felt comfortable, the director. So I thought of something more focused on the director Francis Ford Coppola who is a hell of a case study am I right and decided to link his eccentric "way of building scenarios" with his films. So something like: to what extent did the director's style influence each film... Do you think this would work? I wanted to focus on the director and link his extravagant and boldness with some visual aspects (of course I ll have to talk about the cinematography and not only author bs). Do you have any other suggestions of topic/RQ wording? If you like this could you like give me some ideas on what to develop on the work, I have thought of a few things I am going to explore, but if you have any experience on the most "efficient" way to prove the director did have an influence on some prominent aspects of the films, please tell me. Thanks, Richard
  17. So I am planning on doing my extended essay on K-pop, or korean pop music, what do you guys think? Is it too "weird" or extreme, lol? Or is it unique..? Please help!!!
  18. Hey guys, whats up? I am doing my Extended Essay on Film. I have redacted 6 pages, more less, though I kinda needed help with the visual aspects of the films, since I did not take Film as a subject. I am doing a good job I think, I grasped the "philosophy" of the guide, but tbh the help of a connoisseur of the criteria of the subject for an EE and with technical knowledge on the subject would give me confidence: even though I think I am doing well and read a lot on the theme, I have no aid at school (it doesn't have a film teacher) and the mood there is that I am suicidal by having chosen this, hence feeling like I know what I am king from now on would be very good, just a short guidance, you know? What I ask you is do you know of any IB school who has a certified Film teacher and EE supervisor? Preferably, if he has experience, though as it is so rare to find a Film teacher, if he is indeed willing to aid me online for a price, then thats all it matters really. If necessary, I can also pay the teacher for some extra film classes within the subject if it is valuable for the work and necessary knowledge I didn't totally acquire. Please either respond here with the school or the professor's name or leave me a personal message. Thanks in advance, Richard
  19. Hey guys, since I had to upload my comparative study in a rush and I did not reference my work in the comparative study, I was wondering how much Ib penalises you for not referencing the work. I know that they are quite harsh with the extended essay, but I mean the comparative study was just introduced this year, so perhaps they are not that harsh? :/
  20. Fellows, I am doing my Extended Essay on Film and decided to go for a comparison between Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979) and Gardens of Stone (1987). I am really striving for the A. I just have one doubt. My RQ is still getting adjusted: how (successfully?) did the Director developed filmic techniques to portray the detrimental effects of war (on the individual and society as a whole)? By the way do you think I should just say "detrimental effects of war" or the whole individual and society as a whole thing? But thats not the point. I got in a dilemma on the "thesis" that would steer my whole job from the RQ to the conclusions? Well, I am kinda undecided, for I thought of another one, that might be better. So, these include: 1- John Milius's (the screenwriter of apocalypse now) influence and jingoistic american spirit at the time, with John Wayne's patriotic speeches in movies and with the american spirit of use of the force. This was, like I said, my initial one. I would particularly enjoy doing about this one, as I really liked reading about Milius' and some of the crew 's adventures within college. I would like put up a speculation that Coppola's liberal and humanitarian style was ambiguous and not evident because of the screenwriter's patriotic and right wing idealism and the US's jingoistic spirit at the time after the korean war. 2- Coppola's exacerbated commitment on creating real sets, which would give an insight view of the state of mind of the people, and as a consequence it would transpose the audience's body and soul to a real set, built with shrieking elements which looked as naturally conspicuous as a vietnamese jungle, carved with immense, grand stories. He avidly seeked for this artistic forging of the elements he would put on the scenes: he would the ability for them to speak up for themselves and recount narrations they contained to the audience (empathy with the audience). This would lead and explain many things: his over carried budget, accidents occurred (marty's heart attack, tiger assault, firings, etc). The critics say Apocalypse Now was ambiguous and not evident on its message conveyed: it isn't evident if it is an anti war liberalistic film or if it is an apologist of the use of the force and colonialism. From these critiques I would have to choose one of the above "thesis" or matrix of EE to guide my work to an answer. The second seems better as it would focus more on Coppola's directing and not on the influences he may have suffered, but on the other hand it seems to me I would write way better the Milius' stories and occurrences that could have mingled with the film as well as the hollywood jingoistic spirit. Or I could talk about both, but then there would be two thesis... that wouldn't be narrowing my work, I would have like a list of factors that could have influenced and be a reply to the RQ: how could he portray the war's detrimental effects? Did he do it artistically well? Also, that ambiguity the critiques complained about: that would be my head start. Then probably counter argue with Coppola's avid search for the enhancement of the message to the audience; but then John Milius' influence would refute this... this would be very confusing... should I just use on thesis, link and utilize both? Wouldn't that be messing up my work? What do you think?
  21. Hello there fellows, I am currently in the beginning of my 2nd year and I was planning to go study in the UK, though I am in a dilemma as to what what degree I should take. On the one hand, Law would be great, on the other hand I would also like to take something related to Literature or Arts, since I want to become a writer. However, english is not my native language, so being a writer in the UK or taking a degree in Literature would be harder for me than for other fellow british students. I have to get in touch with the universities now in September, so I am a little bit anxious with this. What do you think it would be better to study in the UK? Literature/Arts or Law? Would law in the UK still allow me to eventually move, for example, to the US? Do you happen to know very good colleges for each of the two areas mentioned? If so, which ones? Feel free to...
  22. Hey guys, I am doing my EE for Film. I have got a topic and I am going to compare 2 movies within my topic, which is exploring the idealism search on Man and the inherent self-destructiveness. Although I have this matrix to make the comparison between two movies, I am having doubts on what movie adaptation I d choose. I am going to do Apocalypse Now (1979) vs The Lord of the Flies, and here s the prob I don't know if I should choose the first movie adaptation (1963), directed by Peter Brook, or the "recent" one (1990), produced by Harry Hook. Any help here, cinematographer fellows? Which one would be better? The older or the other one? Thanks in advance
  23. Guys, I am currently going for my 2nd Year in the IB. Since I would like to study abroad, more specifically in the UK, August/September are the months "destined" to start thinking on college and courses. I am going to be honest: my dream was to become a writer. I have a few forgotten sketches in my room, and I guess I do have an imaginative and sensitive flair for that. I imagine myself waking up every morning with a happy smile knowing that I would spend the rest of the day with the placidity that writing gives me, I mean the fact that I am dwelling in another world, a more unpredictable one designed with the immense figures of speech that I like to use as a means to make art. There is no course for writers, for the one which would be more adequate and that I would particularly enjoy is creative writing. The employability is scarce as if I wanna be a writer, I am not seeking for a (let's say) company to work at, for example. The only thing is working for a publishing or being a book revisor. These would be virtually the only jobs that could finance my books. Furthermore, I thought about doing Law. My "second-dream" is to be a defense attorney, go to the court and fight for the ones that do not have as many contacts or financial means to stand up for themselves. Despite the fact that you never know whether your client is innocent or not, everybody has the right to a fair, impartial trial, and that's what I would like to fight for. When frightened or winced with a reputable opponent, people may rush into something (led by fear or impotence); that is very common in negotiations. Hence, I would like to eradicate that, by offering them a firm and responsible hand that would contour the external factors to justice, such as reputation, lobby, fame, money, etc. I am also a very argumentative person, and I can easily find fallacies and means to refute an apparently valid and reasoned argument. So, I confess I am having doubts on this. I don't know if it is possible to take a certain course but simultaneously attend subjects from another course. For example, taking Law but attending some subjects of the course of creative writing. This would be good, but I don't know if this is doable. Some argue that most writers are good and cult and imaginative due to their careers in Law; some advise me to take a Literature Course, but at the same time if I go to London I will not be writing in my native language, which would certainly disadvantage me within native speakers. Law could give me a stable and financially good life, on the other hand... Can you help me out? Would it be better to simply choose one, the one that makes me happier or should I reconcile these two? Feel free to express yourselves. Cheers, Richard
  24. Good morning/afternoon/evening (who knows, right?) I have decided to do my Extended Essay on Film. I do not have it at my school, though it is one of my main interests. My question is on the topic. I have thought about two options, please guys help me out in here: comparison between The Lord of the Flies and The Apocalypse Now (my RQ would be: To what extent does each film reflect the downfall of the oneiric/idyllic and the appearance of the anarchy?). In this first option, I would like to explore the islands and the idyllic as a theme, that is, the idea of perfection in Cinema. If you guys have some other idea than Apocalypse Now please tell me. In addition, I though about comparing Sam Raimi's Spider Man (the older films) and Mark Webb's The Amazing Spider Man (the more recent spider man movies). It would be a cool and original thing to do, also there has been lots of debate on Mark Webb's films as they are considered to be worse and puny, comparing to Raimi's. I don't have a topic for this, since it is simply an idea, but if you think this would be good for an EE... I am kinda frightened with this as I have the feeling the examiners won't really like this... Please guys, I am really in trouble, just let me know of what you think and if you had Film as an EE what was your topic. Cheers, Richard
