  1. Hi, I am currently in the process of choosing a subject and topic for my EE and I still don't know what to do. Kind of stressed as we have to submit out proposal in two days so I really need some help. I am thinking of either doing a Biology EE or a world studies EE (combining economics and biology) For my Biology EE I am thinking of doing a research on which type of fertiliser can help best with plant growth? Do you guys think this is a good topic to investigate? Will it get me a high mark? On the other hand, for my world studies EE, I am thinking of looking into socioeconomics of countries such as comparing them and see how it affects the spread of diseases. For example, does richer countries do better in controlling the spread of diseases than poorer countries? (My teacher has suggested looking at maybe SARS and how different countries prevented it and compare, but my teacher said that it will be hard to find suitable datas to compare so I really don't know what I can do) Does anyone have any advice or ideas as to what I could do? Thank you!
  2. Hi!! This is my second year of IB and in order to study ESS more efficiently, I made a summary of the whole book. Let me know if you want it
  3. Hey! So my current topic for my Biology HL IA is "How does pH affect the glucose content in milk?" and I'm not sure if it is good enough to get a good grade (7). I wanted to change the pH of milk by the addition of bases and acids and then adding lactase which would break lactose into glucose and galactose. Then I would use glucose test strips to see what the content of glucose in all of the samples is. Is it good enough? Should I make it more complicated by checking something else? Or should I look for another topic? All tips and help would be much appreciated!
  4. Hi, these are my options so far... HL: Physics, Biology, English SL: Econ, Spanish, Maths AA I'm worried about taking two sciences at HL. No one at my school has done that before and I'm afraid it's going to be too difficult (I want to get a good grade of ib). I am fascinated by physics and biology, plus I am thinking about going to medical school or studying physics so I know that both courses will help me decide what I want to study. Has anyone taken two sciences at HL or do you know anyone who has? I welcome any suggestions! Thank you
  5. I need help... I don't know if I should choose Chemistry HL, I was a Core IGCSE student and I'm not very good at chemistry or an overall intelligent student , I was in the top 5 but as a class we are not very good anyway.Should i choose it i have until the 3rd of November to choose my options. Ohhhh. I'm also a hardcore procrastinator and never really do things on time. Is CHEM HL really hard? or if i study will i be able to do it
  6. Hi! I'm doing my EE on biology secondary research and struggled looking for samples or direct guidance at all so I mainly relied on the IB EE guide book. I've summarized the key points they mentioned for Bio and another summary under the actual text because the other summary I originally made was still too long. (yes. it's that wordy.) so there are two summaries, you could say. Most of what they say are a bit repetitive so I will be posting another clearer version of this once im done with my finals on thursday. If you guys want, I can also change it to a checklist format to make it easier. Hope it helps! BIO EE CRITERIA.docx
  7. So I've decided to do my IA on the effects of temperature on the transpiration rate of plants using potometer. I told my teacher about the topic and he approved of it. BUT the experiment and it's results are actually a part of the syllabus. Will there be any problems or issues with my IA later on?
  8. My subject for the EE is chemistry, and I was wondering how far I can stretch that subject to apply to other subjects. My main idea is that I should study how cottonmouth venom is synthesized into an antivenom. The final topic is due tomorrow. However, there are a lot of problems with this topic. First of all, my TOK teacher (not my subject supervisor) told me that this topic leans too heavily into biology, but he isn’t the best resource on scientific EEs, which he admitted to me personally. Second of all, venom is a toxic chemical. Am I allowed to study this, even though I don’t plan to do am experiment myself? The subject says explicitly that toxic and dangerous chemicals are prohibited, but I’m unsure if that applies only to personally-conducted experiments, or to the topic in general. Lastly, I can’t do my own experiment in this topic, obviously. Will this cause me to lose points? These are my main problems/ questions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Biology IA on caffeine

heya! I thought of doing my IA on the effect of caffeine on plant growth. Is this topic good enough? Any other suggestions anybody?
  12. My biology IA proposal is due soon and I don´t really have a concrete idea. Since I´m lactose intolerant I want to do something related to lactose and lactase but I can´t think of what I should do with it. Changing the temperature and the concentration seems a bit too straight forward so I was thinking I´d change the pH but I´m not too sure... Does anyone have any ideas???
  13. Hey! A quick little post to kindly ask if any of y'all could fill out this form for my data collection for my Biology IA. All you have to do is complete a small online colour vision test and then add your result. Thank you ahead of time for the help! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfxh562qoHj7CO0XPgMwOVFrkjR1ZvDGwMublGAkQ3opAGFYw/viewform?usp=sf_link
  14. Hey, I am desperately in need of help on how I should write up the report for my biology IA. I did "How does the PH of the provided plant nutrition affect the germination of pea seeds?" Any ideas on how I should write it up?
  15. I'm doing a bio ee and I gathered and processed all the data but I'm facing a dilemma, what should I do if there is no correlation/relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable? I'm really scared that I'm going to fail, I'm hoping to get a B but I'd be happy with a C... Can someone that has experienced this give me some advice?? should I fake the data or should I explain why there's no correlation?
  16. Hello, my name is Martina and I really need someone to help me with the EE, since my supervisor is avoiding me. The subject I chose for the EE is biology. I'd like to come up with an experiment that would allow me to talk about human physiology, but without involving people. (i did the same for the IAs in bio and chem by using enzymes and antacids) I'm now thinking about using visking tubes for my experiment. They could represent either the gut or the dialysis machine. I suppose that I cannot use them as a gut model since I'm already talking about the digestive system in the abovementioned IAs. So my question is: How can I carry on an experiment on dialysis with visking tube? I could possibly use the substances that are present in the dialysis fluid (like sodium, potassium, calcium etc) and showing their diffusion through the tube as in the machine, but I wouldn't have variables. Do you guys have any ideas? I'd really appreciate your help, I'm really struggling
  17. Hello! I'm doing my extended essay on plant growth, but I only have 3 trials from my experimenting. I was told that theres hardly any statistical analysis that i can do without more than 5 trials, aside from calculating the mean, and I have no idea where to go with my data. I was planning on a lab based EE from primary data, but I'm not sure if thats possible anymore seeing as I dont have enough trials for in depth statistical analysis. Should I run more trials, or should I change direction with my EE and use my primary data to support secondary data, turning it into a research based essay instead of experimental?? Please help!! - Thanks, Cherry
  18. Hey guys, I am thinking of doing a Bio EE on the topic of gaming and reaction speeds. I would talk about the part of the nervous system responsible for reflexes and such. I would get the data by making the students at my school take a reaction time test. I would then categorize the data into gamers and non-gamers. Should i add more criteria such as atheltes? Should i separate by age as well? I would like more input on this as I do not know what makes an EE good or bad. Input explaining on how to improve the topic or how the topic will not work is much appreciated, Any new topic suggestions are also welcome!! Which RQ is better? To what extent does fast paced video games affect reaction time, visual perception and decision making in teenagers? or What are the cognitive effects of fast paced video games on teenagers?
  19. For my biology IA I am going to compare one's BMI value to the new Relative Fat Mass Index value to determine how inaccurate BMI is for each person (I will average the percent error at the end as well). However, I'm struggling to determine what my independent variable is. Would it be an individuals height, weight, and waist measurement (which sounds wrong because its technically more than one thing being changed) or the test used (BMI vs. RFM)? I think the dependent variable would be the calculated percent error.
  20. Hello All, As you know by the title, I need EE help. Basically, I chose to do a biology EE cause it is my passion. At the beginning of our topic selection, I met with my advisor and told her that I wanted to do something with E.coli. Over the next several meetings I had with her, I decided upon studying how the different pH's of different foods inhibit E.coli growth. Long story short, on the LAST day of school my advisor tells me that I can no longer choose a topic that has to do with bacteria or else I will not score well. Apparently, IBO changed their guidelines that effected my class and when I asked my advisor about it she said: "yea, they can do that and we have to oblige". So I took about 1 day or so thinking about another topic I could do and landed on studying how different elements such as Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus inhibit the growth of a lima bean plant. So I got my materials and everything I needed to conduct my experiment and for the life of me, I have not been able to grow any seeds. All of the seeds which I have tried germinating or planting have died/failed/rot. That was 2 months ago. I have kept trying since then but to no avail. My rough draft of the EE is due on the first day of school 8/12/2019 and I do not know what to do. I have emailed my advisor multiple times and each time she has told me to either change my watering habits (which I have, I water once a day, and keep them in the sunniest part of my patio so they get the most sun), or to restart my seeds, or even keep trying. She even said she is baffled as to how I have not been able to grow such an easy plant. And now I am on the brink of a total mental breakdown and do not know what to do. My advisor told me I need some sort of data represented in my EE and if I have none, it will not be good. Can someone explain to me what would happen if my experiment for my EE does not go well? I would really appreciate it. Furthermore, I am in Florida, and all of the gardening departments of every store and independent gardening markets have stopped selling seeds as the season is coming to a close, which is making me even more frustrated now that I have no way of obtaining seeds. Someone, please help. Thank You.
  21. Hi I'm looking to go into the medical field in university but I'm not sure whether I should take HL Math or HL Psych. As of right now, I really want to study neuroscience in uni and I know Psych would help with that but at the same time, HL Math might be really important especially with calculus and all. My current subject choices are: HL Biology, Chemistry, Psych/Math SL English Lang Lit, Chinese B, Psych/Math Please let me know what you think is best and in general what you think of the subject combination. I know it will be extremely challenging and I'm scared but I like the subjects and I really want to head into the medical field. Thank you!
  22. Hey!! I'm starting IB in less than a month and I already chose my subjects because I wanted to major in Psychology. However, I am now leaning towards veterinary science. At first, I chose bio SL. To be a vet, I first need to have a bachelor degree in Biological Science. The uni I plan on going does not require chem. But, if I do major in biological science, there will be some chem classes. I am for sure taking Bio but I am not sure if I should move it to HL and add Chem SL. My question here is how hard is BIO HL compared to BIO SL? (I'm interested in bio) Will chem SL help me in uni (Biological Science major) even though my uni does not require it? should i take it? (I'm really bad at math and I do not really enjoy chem and I found the intro class hard but I did not really pay attention)
  23. Hello, thanks in advance for your answer. My friend has a very high probability of repeating one year. Under what conditions does a person stay in the second year in ib (11 grade) ? If in the first term (grade 11) the student receives 1,2,2,7,5,6. And in the third term (grade 11 ) he has 7,6,7,3,2,4 + A (TOK) will my friend have repeat a grade ? (Retention one year ) (CAS has done ) My friend is very nervous about this, but I don't know anything about falling conditions in ib. Thank you 😊
  24. Hi, so I'm just getting acquainted to the BIO IA, I thought about investigating How does a change in oxygen concentration affect the fermentation rate in yeast. The thing is, there are most likely experiments done on that topic before. Am I allowed to redo experiments in that case?
