    URGENT IA HELP!

Hey, I am desperately in need of help on how I should write up the report for my biology IA. I did "How does the PH of the provided plant nutrition affect the germination of pea seeds?" Any ideas on how I should write it up?
  3. I'm doing a bio ee and I gathered and processed all the data but I'm facing a dilemma, what should I do if there is no correlation/relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable? I'm really scared that I'm going to fail, I'm hoping to get a B but I'd be happy with a C... Can someone that has experienced this give me some advice?? should I fake the data or should I explain why there's no correlation?

    EE BIOLOGY HELPP

Hello, my name is Martina and I really need someone to help me with the EE, since my supervisor is avoiding me. The subject I chose for the EE is biology. I'd like to come up with an experiment that would allow me to talk about human physiology, but without involving people. (i did the same for the IAs in bio and chem by using enzymes and antacids) I'm now thinking about using visking tubes for my experiment. They could represent either the gut or the dialysis machine. I suppose that I cannot use them as a gut model since I'm already talking about the digestive system in the abovementioned IAs. So my question is: How can I carry on an experiment on dialysis with visking tube? I could possibly use the substances that are present in the dialysis fluid (like sodium, potassium, calcium etc) and showing their diffusion through the tube as in the machine, but I wouldn't have variables. Do you guys have any ideas? I'd really appreciate your help, I'm really struggling
  5. Hello! I'm doing my extended essay on plant growth, but I only have 3 trials from my experimenting. I was told that theres hardly any statistical analysis that i can do without more than 5 trials, aside from calculating the mean, and I have no idea where to go with my data. I was planning on a lab based EE from primary data, but I'm not sure if thats possible anymore seeing as I dont have enough trials for in depth statistical analysis. Should I run more trials, or should I change direction with my EE and use my primary data to support secondary data, turning it into a research based essay instead of experimental?? Please help!! - Thanks, Cherry

    BIO extended essay

Hey guys, I am thinking of doing a Bio EE on the topic of gaming and reaction speeds. I would talk about the part of the nervous system responsible for reflexes and such. I would get the data by making the students at my school take a reaction time test. I would then categorize the data into gamers and non-gamers. Should i add more criteria such as atheltes? Should i separate by age as well? I would like more input on this as I do not know what makes an EE good or bad. Input explaining on how to improve the topic or how the topic will not work is much appreciated, Any new topic suggestions are also welcome!! Which RQ is better? To what extent does fast paced video games affect reaction time, visual perception and decision making in teenagers? or What are the cognitive effects of fast paced video games on teenagers?
  7. For my biology IA I am going to compare one's BMI value to the new Relative Fat Mass Index value to determine how inaccurate BMI is for each person (I will average the percent error at the end as well). However, I'm struggling to determine what my independent variable is. Would it be an individuals height, weight, and waist measurement (which sounds wrong because its technically more than one thing being changed) or the test used (BMI vs. RFM)? I think the dependent variable would be the calculated percent error.

    EE Help

Hello All, As you know by the title, I need EE help. Basically, I chose to do a biology EE cause it is my passion. At the beginning of our topic selection, I met with my advisor and told her that I wanted to do something with E.coli. Over the next several meetings I had with her, I decided upon studying how the different pH's of different foods inhibit E.coli growth. Long story short, on the LAST day of school my advisor tells me that I can no longer choose a topic that has to do with bacteria or else I will not score well. Apparently, IBO changed their guidelines that effected my class and when I asked my advisor about it she said: "yea, they can do that and we have to oblige". So I took about 1 day or so thinking about another topic I could do and landed on studying how different elements such as Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus inhibit the growth of a lima bean plant. So I got my materials and everything I needed to conduct my experiment and for the life of me, I have not been able to grow any seeds. All of the seeds which I have tried germinating or planting have died/failed/rot. That was 2 months ago. I have kept trying since then but to no avail. My rough draft of the EE is due on the first day of school 8/12/2019 and I do not know what to do. I have emailed my advisor multiple times and each time she has told me to either change my watering habits (which I have, I water once a day, and keep them in the sunniest part of my patio so they get the most sun), or to restart my seeds, or even keep trying. She even said she is baffled as to how I have not been able to grow such an easy plant. And now I am on the brink of a total mental breakdown and do not know what to do. My advisor told me I need some sort of data represented in my EE and if I have none, it will not be good. Can someone explain to me what would happen if my experiment for my EE does not go well? I would really appreciate it. Furthermore, I am in Florida, and all of the gardening departments of every store and independent gardening markets have stopped selling seeds as the season is coming to a close, which is making me even more frustrated now that I have no way of obtaining seeds. Someone, please help. Thank You.

    HL Math or HL Psych

Hi I'm looking to go into the medical field in university but I'm not sure whether I should take HL Math or HL Psych. As of right now, I really want to study neuroscience in uni and I know Psych would help with that but at the same time, HL Math might be really important especially with calculus and all. My current subject choices are: HL Biology, Chemistry, Psych/Math SL English Lang Lit, Chinese B, Psych/Math Please let me know what you think is best and in general what you think of the subject combination. I know it will be extremely challenging and I'm scared but I like the subjects and I really want to head into the medical field. Thank you!

    IB BIO AND CHEM

Hey!! I'm starting IB in less than a month and I already chose my subjects because I wanted to major in Psychology. However, I am now leaning towards veterinary science. At first, I chose bio SL. To be a vet, I first need to have a bachelor degree in Biological Science. The uni I plan on going does not require chem. But, if I do major in biological science, there will be some chem classes. I am for sure taking Bio but I am not sure if I should move it to HL and add Chem SL. My question here is how hard is BIO HL compared to BIO SL? (I'm interested in bio) Will chem SL help me in uni (Biological Science major) even though my uni does not require it? should i take it? (I'm really bad at math and I do not really enjoy chem and I found the intro class hard but I did not really pay attention)

Should I request for a remark?

The IB results came out today. I'm short of 2 points for getting my diploma and I want to get some opinions if I should get a remark. My requirement codes only requires me to get a 24 and have at least 12 points in all of my HLs combined. These are what I got: (9 points in all of my HLs combined currently, need 3 more) English Literature HL: 54 (a 4 on the 7 pt. scale), needs 4 more marks for a 5 Biology HL: 36 ( a 3 on the 7 pt. scale), needs 2 more marks for a 4 Chemistry HL: 31 ( a 2 on the 7 pt. scale), needs 3 more marks for a 3 I basically just need to get all of these points for all of these subjects to fulfil my requirement code and get the IB Diploma. What are my chances of getting bumped up by a point in each subject? Should I just go for it?

    repeating one year

Hello, thanks in advance for your answer. My friend has a very high probability of repeating one year. Under what conditions does a person stay in the second year in ib (11 grade) ? If in the first term (grade 11) the student receives 1,2,2,7,5,6. And in the third term (grade 11 ) he has 7,6,7,3,2,4 + A (TOK) will my friend have repeat a grade ? (Retention one year ) (CAS has done ) My friend is very nervous about this, but I don't know anything about falling conditions in ib. Thank you 😊
  13. Hi, so I'm just getting acquainted to the BIO IA, I thought about investigating How does a change in oxygen concentration affect the fermentation rate in yeast. The thing is, there are most likely experiments done on that topic before. Am I allowed to redo experiments in that case?
  14. I am interested in knowing how others structured their science discussion section. In my EE I've conducted an experiment to see how three different factors that all affect the rate of transpiration in trees change the rate when combined. The experiment went smoothly and I'm halfway into finishing my EE but I'm having troubles with writing the discussion part. I know that a lot of this part of the EE has to do with comparing your results with data you can find from other sources and discuss why your data and the other data may differ for example. I've been reading scientific publication online for the past week but I am unable to find studies on the effect of combination of these factors on the rate of transpiration in trees - I've only found studies on the effect of one factor at a time - and I'm wondering if someone has any ideas on another approach than comparing results that I could consider.

    EE BIOLOGY (Need opinion)

Hello everyone, I am a doing DP1 at the moment and I would like to hear some opinions about my research question in biology. My research question is: "Is there a significant difference between gamers and non-gamers reaction time?". I will use a click test which records the reaction time of when someone clicks on the computer screen when it changes to green. Please tell me if I should be more specific or what I could improve in this question. Thank you very much!
  16. I will be in DP 1 next year and supposedly my subjects choices have to be confirmed by now. However, there is a problem with my subject choices, originally I picked HL GEOGRAPHY HL, DESIGN HL, CHINESE LANG B HL, and ENGLISH SL, MATH SL and ESS, but my school can't offer HL GEO and HL DESIGN together as there are not enough students to open a class. Therefore, I am forced to change. In the future, I am planning to do further study on something related to animals, environment, photography or even design. I know that Biology will impact me the most but I sucks at it and I don't enjoy it as well, so I am thinking about Business HL ( I heard it is easy ). Which subject should I pick? should I just ditch IB and do other? Thank you!

    Biology IA Qualitative Data

Dear IB Survival community, I am almost done writing the first draft of my Biology IA. I have investigated the effect of different temperatures on the glucose content in Bananas. I have collected pictures of how the Bananas have ripened and included them under the qualitative data section in my report. Now I´m wondering where do I comment on this qualitative data? Do I talk about this in my conclusion even though it is not part of my research question or hypothesis? Thanks for your help guys :))
  18. Hello everyone, I am a French-Canadian studying IB in Estonia; I need help to find some topics and ideas to make a great research question for my EE in biology. I thought I could do a simple experiment which would give me a sufficient amount of data; it must be simple because as you know, we have a lot more to do than just the EE haha . My field of interest includes food, bacteria, drugs, human and animal physiology, microbiology, medicine, hormones, immune system and enzymes. If you have any ideas for interesting topics, experiments or ideas to make a great research question, please let me know in the comment section below. Thank you very much and have a fantastic day.
  19. This is what i did for my group 4 project, my teacher has marked it and I got 20/24 which is a 7 I think or 6.
  20. Title. Science doesn't exactly relate to my intended major (economics) so I'm really just choosing whichever is the easiest one at SL. Also, I'm not considering chemistry to be an option cause I'm learning it right now and absolutely hate it.
  21. Hello fellow IB students, I am currently writing my Biology Internal Assessment Lab-design and I am struggling to determine the controlled variables in my experiment. I am writing about the effect of different temperatures on the ripening process of Bananas. (the ripening process in Bananas is controlled by different enzymes). Now my question is what would be the controlled variables in this experiment? Thank you for your help!
  22. I need to start getting solid with my IA topic but right now I am just brainstorming ideas and wanting to hear some ideas from peers. So far I only have around three ideas but are fairly common and perhaps not HL worthy: 1) Calcium content in different types of milk ( not sure how to do this one but interested, wondering if I should use the milk of different animals or different processes and procedures) 2) Enzyme and substrate relationship on how changing the amount of substrate would affect the enzyme activity and perhaps the pH as well? ( Biological catalyst, a bit worried that this is too biology, thinking about using catalase and hydrogen peroxide but afraid that it is too common and also would like to explore different enzymes as well) 3) Best material for cooling pack (quite random really...) I don't really have a lot of confidence in myself and due to previous issues, I have stuff in my chemistry academics to catch up on and find it different to concentrate and understand but I'm willing to learn and work hard. Please do suggest different Chem IA topics as well! I would love to hear them and perhaps find one that I really like.
  23. Is it really late if I start doing past exams (timed) this Tuesday? I plan to do the 2016-2018 ones before the exam on the 9th. Do you think this is reasonable ? Because I’m gonna be done going through all the content by Monday I only have a couple sections left to cover and I wanna do exams after finishing everything

    biology IA idea help

Hi, i'm struggling with my idea for my biology IA so guidance would be much appreciated.:) i was thinking of investigating the effects of salinity on the rate of photosynthesis in elodea, but is this too basic and easily answered? Or could i compare the effect of salinity on photosynthesis in an elodea, a pond plant, and compare it to a coastal plant?

    Nature of Science

What is Nature of Science? It seems like the IB is beginning to ask more and more questions on it in the exams. Is there anything that I need to know or understand for it? I know that you can just use some common sense and logic to answer these types of questions, but is there any way to prepare?
