  4. Which books are you reading/did you read for your Literature course? (English or other languages) Which one was your favorite?
  5. Are there any History books that focus solely on Mao's Hundred Flowers campaign? Most of the books that I have concentrate on a huge period of China's history, but I only really need to read about this one event.
  6. What are the best books to study IB. I am currently using the Oxford books for all my subjects. Are these books enough?
  7. Hello everyone! In the next month or so I have to have my EE topic chosen. Yikes! I'm leaning toward an English literature EE. Unfortunately, I cannot think of a book to write about - most books I've read at school have been analyzed to death and would be scored harshly by people who knew every line (i.e. Hamlet) and most books I've read personally may or may not count as having literary merit. Anyway, I need some help with book choices. I don't care if I do an analysis on one book or a comparison of two. Here are some ideas I have: +Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut - I like the idea of this one, haven't read it yet but it sounds interesting and a friend told me it was good. A little concerned about the content and whether or not it has been overdone. +Catch-22 by Joseph Heller - Again, haven't read this one but it seemed like a good book to compare to Cat's Cradle. On the other hand, it seems really complex and might be hard to mesh with other ideas. +Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury - I've started this one but am only a few pages in. I'm a little concerned about how it lends itself to such a lengthy analysis. +Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston - I'm currently reading this one and I really enjoy it, but it might be another overdone book. I'm considering writing about the relation of salvation in the book to the social struggles of the time but I don't want to get off topic. It would also be cool to compare to a more modern book about society, looking between the time periods. Other than these ideas, I've really enjoyed the school books of To Kill A Mockingbird, A Tale of Two Cities, 1984, The Odyssey, as well as my own reads like The Golden Compass, The Rithmatist, Abarat, and Harry Potter. It would be cool to do a comparison of religious themes between The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Golden Compass because they portray religion very differently, but both are considered children's books so that probably wouldn't work. Overall, my favorite genre is definitely fantasy and if you have any recommendations of fantasy books with literary merit (besides The Lord of the Rings lol) I'm all ears. Thanks in advance!
  8. Hi, I am trying to come up with an EE topic (I am already pretty late on this whole EE thing) and the only subject left for me to do it in is economics I came up with the idea of producing my EE around the topic of books and ebooks, mostly because an uncle of mine actually runs a book distribution company and can help me a lot in finding info. My research question right now is: "To what extent did the introduction of e-books in affect the demand and sales for paperback books in the São Paulo region of Brazil?". I live in São Paulo, Brazil, by the way... While I think this might be pretty viable, it has a few problems as the demand and sales for books and e-books is constantly changing everywhere, for many reasons, especially now in the economic mess Brazil is. Because of this, I think it would be very hard to form a cause-and-effect relationship between the books and e-books. Also, according to this uncle of mine, who knows quite a bit about the topic, it would be hard to find information regarding specific sales and the effects of e-books in any one city or region of Brazil, but finding info for the whole country might be possible. As I mentioned, this topic seemed good at first but now presents many practical problems. It would be nice to be able to stick to the whole books theme, but if it's not possible, I will switch to another topic. Anyhow, does anyone have any suggestions, ideas or anything to say on the topic? Anything would be useful really, so if you can think of something please send it my way! Thank you in advance! PS - I've also heard that it might be a good idea to keep my EE focused on microeconomics. Is that true? Thanks again
  9. Hi guys! I'm currently writing my IA about the extent to which the Boxer Rebellion could be attributed to the fall of the Qing Dynasty, and I'm struggling to find secondary sources which talk about the historical implications of the Boxer Rebellion. Most books which I've come across only seem to discuss the military tactics and strategies used by the Western powers. Do you guys know of any resources which could lead me in the right direction? Thanks!
  10. Hi everyone, Next year I am going to be taking Chemistry HL , Biology HL , Economics HL , Math Sl and Lang/Lit SL. Now I was wondering if anyone had good textbook ( textbook, study guide etc.) suggestions for these subjects that I will be taking? Since our school does not require to buy or use a specific book. Thank you:)
  11. Hi! I took literature because I love to read and I am good at analyzing texts. I created this topic to open a space where we could share what we are reading (in class and outside of class/in our free time), what are our favorite books, favorite genres, favorite authors, book recommendation, and everything you would like to share. I took English A Lit HL and we read: Persepolis Woman at Point Zero (loved it) A Doll's House The Great Gatsby All my sons Death of a Naturalist (poems) That's it so far. In my free time (IF I CAN EVER FIND SOME FREE TIME, IB LIFE ) I am reading The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. He is one of my favorite authors. I also like Haruki Murakami. One of my favorite books are... Kite Runner (Fell in love with this one), 100 years of solitude (yes, I read a lot of books in Spanish too), Night Circus, After Dark, The Book Thief and more! What about you??
  12. Just wondering what books you would've liked to read and discuss in the IB. My list below (not exhaustive): Catch-22: Just finished this; surprisingly potent mixture of tragedy and comedy Tono-Bungay: Somewhat obscure novel by Wells, overshadowed I think by his science fiction, but is quite a good criticism of certain facets of Victorian society Infinite Jest: Probably too lengthy to actually be part of the IB syllabus, but just a great novel overall (although to nitpick a little after re-reading it about 8 times, some of the math seems a bit strange; I mean, seriously, 'post-Fourier analysis'? Also, the derivative of xn is wrong, though it may be just a typo) 1984/Animal Farm: Dark, but poignant. Anything by Dickens, Hardy etc. The Iliad/The Odyssey/The Aeneid: Does depend on translation, I suppose, but I particularly liked Fitzgerald's version - manages to preserve a poetic style while simultaneously . Pope's version is arguably the best in his use of language, but some of the events in the Iliad are a bit skewed; Achilles is portrayed as antagonizing Agamemnon as opposed to just standing up for the priest, and Odysseus seems both wise and cunning, which isn't really reflected in the other translations (he feels more inclined to be cunning, while Diomedes fills the role of wisdom).

Would it be a good idea to do a literary analysis on The Glass Castle (memoir) by Jeanette Walls for my EE?
  14. Hello everyone, I'm struggling to write my English Literature Written Assignment, so any help at all will be very appreciated. My title is "How does Dorfman use the relationship between the gun and light to examine the theme of empowerment in "Death and the Maiden"?" I need help on structuring my essay like what should my three points be? Thank you so so much.
  15. guys I was wondering if "Catcher in the Rye" can be a good book to cover under the "sexuality" theme for English Extended Essay?
  16. For my Extended Essay, I want to do a character analysis about Sansa Stark, from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. There is one line in the first book that pretty much sums up why the character is intelligent and strong in her own way: “courtesy is a lady’s armor” I love the fact that Sansa is not strong in a common way. People say she is not "badass" like other characters because she can't fight with a sword. So I'd like to write my EE on how Sansa Stark learns to use her abilities to stay alive and gain friends and allies through the series, but I don't know how I could formulate my RQ. I was thinking about something like: Courtesy is a lady's armor: An exploration of Sansa Stark's abilities and how they've kept her alive in A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin But I don't even know if that's an appropriate title for an EE. There's a lot of material I want to analyze, such as dialogues, monologues, relationships, metaphors and symbols, but I don't know what type of RQ would encompass all of those.

  18. I start grade 11 in September and I'm going into Math HL . I'm really good at math but I still want to prepare myself for this course. I can't seem to find any syllabus on the IB website and I'm not sure other syllabus i find on random websites will be updated or accurate. Anyone know where I could find an accurate syllabus or maybe pdf versions of books? Also, any other tips for preparing for math HL? And anyone recommend a graphic calculator? edit: literally minutes after posting this i found the syllabus http://highered.colorado.gov/academics/admissions/PLA docs/Mathematics (GT-MA1)/IB – Mathematics HL Curriculum Guide.pdf But I don't know which books to use to start prepping myself!
  19. I decided to change my extended essay topic yesterday and I wanted to know if you guys think my new topic and research question are alright. I'm doing it on language and literature. The books I picked are A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin and I'm planning on talking about symbolism in Sansa's storyline but I'm not sure if my RQ is alright or if I have to modify it because I don't want it to sound too simple or overdone, so if you guys could give me your opinion I'd appreciate it a lot. The question is: What is the importance of symbolism in Sansa Stark's storyline in A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin?
  20. hi everyone I'm writing my essay on lang and lit. I chose to do it in category 1. Im wondering if the author of the book i chose needs to be in the IB list of prescribed authors, or if that is only applied to works studied in class. Thank you so much for your help Madison

  23. I'll jump right in to the absolute mess of my situation - I changed from World Studies to English at a reasonably late date (but not the latest!) and have since found a muse for my essay writing. The beautifully gothic Edgar Allan Poe - I've chosen 'The Pit and the Pendulum', 'The Black Cat', 'The Tell-Tale Heart', and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' as my four short stories to study. Of course, I have an English supervisor, but there is one problem - she's suggested I jump right in and write, without a question. Okay, so I know I need to write about the gothic horror element within his writing. But that's too broad, surely? I've thought about the theme of inflicted and innate madness, and their different portrayals within the stories, but I am unsure. Has anyone else done Edgar Allan Poe in the past, and if so, what topic did you decide on? I simply need inspiration. My first draft is due in two weeks. Thank you! mala-prop-ism
  24. I've been trying to decide what books I should do my English EE on and I just wanted to get some opinions. I was wondering if any John Green novels were ok to use? I was thinking about using The Secret Garden and looking for a book to compare it with?? or is this to over done?? help!!!!!
  25. Hey! I would like to know which books did you read for Spanish A Language and Literature. My teacher told us that it is important to have the same theme in each book and we should choose carefully. She recommends books that we already read and we don´t like. Can you put your lists here? Thanks!
