  1. Hi guys, so this is my situation. for my extended essay, i planned to go for computer science subject on something about machine learning. My research question was about how effective a boosting model was in predicting stock prices. So i asked my teacher, and after reading my outline he said that he considered this an ITGS essay. What do you guys think? Can it be used for CS? What should i alter and how to improve? Thanks. P.S. i am also unsure of this topic is too advanced for me as i am not really experienced in the R language or programming in general, but have someone close who is very familiar.
  2. Hello everyone, I am currently doing my EE in computer science and i just want to make sure that my chosen topic is good and i can start working on it My research question is "To what extent is the increase in processing power diminished the need for a complicated sorting algorithms in large data structures" Is the research question fine or do i change/refine it. One problem is that i found a similar question on the official IBO website. Thank you in advance
  3. I'm a month into IB and my classes so far are: HL Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Arabic B; SL Economics and English LL. However, I've been rethinking what I want to do in the future and have been moving away from engineering/physics towards more Maths and computer science. If I decide to drop chemistry for comp sci, my schedule will be as follows: HL Maths, Physics, English LL; SL Comp Sci, Economics, Spanish AB. My school doesn't offer computer science Higher Level. I'm worried that this setup is not as strong as the first one with regards to me applying for mathematics at Oxford. Also, without CS HL, there is no way I can apply for CS at Oxford and be taken seriously. Thoughts?
  4. Hi, I'm starting the IB diploma next year and I am wondering what courses I should choose if I want to study at universities such as Imperial, UCL, or King's College London. I know it is greatly recommended to take HL Math if wanting to study Computer Science, but I'm really not that great at maths and I don't think I would be able to get very good results in that class. My school does not offer HL Computer Science, but they're allowing me to take an additional AP Computer Science class apart from the IB diploma. The courses that I want to take are HL Physics, HL Economics, HL Math, SL Spanish, SL English, SL Psychology and AP Computer Science, however since I have previously mentioned, I'm not very good at Math and taking four high-level courses might be the end of me. I was wondering what are the chances of me getting into a top university in the UK while taking SL math.

    Subject Choices

Hi, I am currently an MYP student and the time to choose my subjects for next year is coming up so I just wanted some advice on what people thought of my choices and whether I'm biting off more than I can chew. For background knowledge about my subject choices, I'm aiming to get into a CS college. HL - Math, Physics, Computer Science SL - English, Spanish, ESS I know that chemistry is traditionally a subject for CS but I'm personally very bad with the subject and I've heard that HL and SL chem are quite difficult, and considering the fact that my HL's are already quite rigorous on their own, I wasn't sure if it was the best idea to add chem to the workload. I'm also not really sure about ESS yet, I want to take either ESS or a humanities subject that won't be as demanding as some of the other options. So I'm just wondering whether my subject choices are cohesive and whether I should be taking chem or maybe switching out ESS for a humanities subject? Thanks for reading.
  6. Hi there, Recently I had a trouble with finding an OK topic to evaluate in my EE. I'm almost 100% sure that I'll be doing it in CS, hovewer, I found my previous topic inacceptable due to some financial matters. I was thinking about a topic in which I am well informed, and I found this interesting. I just don't know if it's viable. Any comments or help on directions of my evaluation would be good to see. Thanks to you all, me
  7. Hi, I was just wondering if there was a way to make a computer science a discussion thread under the experimental science section? It seems kind of wild to me that there hasn't been one made already because it's probably one of the least talked about topics (even though the IA requirements are some of the most general and overall unhelpful). Especially since most computer science teachers probably aren't the best at teaching things like IAs (at least in my experience). SO after that mini rant, does anyone have any tips for the design doc (Crit B) for the IA? (My IA is a word game (similar to scrabble) in the language Java) Thanks! (and yes I have already seen the example IAs you can find on the internet)
  8. Can you do your computer science IA in any language? I asked my teacher if I could do mine in Python, and she said no. But I've seen other people online saying that they have written their IA in a language other than Java, like C++ for example. I would like to use Python as I find it much easier to read and write; plus I've been coding in Python for a lot longer than I have in Java. So if we can write the IA in any language, does it say that anywhere in the guide? Thanks for your help
  9. For those who have done an EE in CS, how hard was it? And how do you collect data if you need to? Do you mainly use secondary data for the essay?
  10. Hey guys, I've been looking around the internet and seemed to not find any threads or forums regarding the Computer Science may 2018 Case study where students can share note, so I just wanted to create this to help us share links and notes. If I am mistaken and a thread like this exists please link me to it, so I can be aware. Thanks!

    Computer Science IA HL

Hello, I'm a year 2 Computer Science HL student and just selected my idea for my computer IA. I have a doubt on whether the option we chose determines the programming language used for the IA. In my case, I have chosen Option D : OOPS concepts . So does this mean I have to use Java learnt from Option D for my IA or am I allowed to use other languages like C++ using Visual Studio? Thank you so much!
  12. Hi, I'm about to choose my IB subjects and I feel like I need some help. It's really hard... Can someone write about Computer Science and Design Technology? Is it intresting for you, is it hard? Does the studying and homework take a lot of time? Also, is Chemistry HL really that hard? I heard terrible stuff about it, but I think I'll still choose it. What are the easiest subjects in IB? Sorry, for that many questions. I'm just nervous... Thank you for helping me with it Annkey
  13. I have 30,000 video-game songs and trained a RBM on them and used that model to create my own game music... I want to incorporate that data and discuss the quality of generation from the computer versus composers. I want to survey people on the quality of songs too (I took IB Psychology so I can do the experiment part accurately). Is this a computer science, Biology (human behavior), or music IA? I think this is a really interesting topic and wish to pursue it. Please help me understand which Topic to put my idea under if its at all possible. Thank you in advance!
  14. Hi, this is my first time creating a forum post and I might not be as specific or on topic as I need to be to get my points and thoughts across so please bear with me. Currently I am in the midst or writing the first draft for my Computer Science Extended Essay and I seem to have hit a snag. The Research Question I have come up with is: To what extent has Artificial Intelligence impacted the space exploration industry? I would appreciate it if anyone could answer a few of my concerns about my RQ: Is it too broad? If it is, how can I narrow it without changing too much, as I already put up my first reflection which includes my RQ. (Kind of rushed and got myself into trouble here) Also, are there any fresh or unique takes on this topic? All I seem to be able to think of are the basics. (I just really wanted to do my EE on AIs and now I regret being so adamant) Below are the Self-Reflections I have posted in the RRS to give you an idea of my direction: First: My main points of focus and essay outline are as follows: Introduction: Why AI's should be implemented or researched etc. How AI's imitate human behaviour: Mental Processes and Procedural thinking. Efficiency of algorithms: Analyse the Machine Learning Algorithm and improve on efficiency if possible. Why AI's are suitable for use in space: Benefits and Drawbacks. Two current uses of AI in space: Rovers (AEGIS) and Environmental Maintenance (BioSphere). Possible future uses: Extraterrestrial exploration, Interplanetary travel (Passengers). Conclusion: To what extent has Artificial Intelligence impacted the space exploration industry? Second: Outline of Introduction: Context: Artificial Intelligence is an industry in itself as there are various uses for a technology which can simulate human behaviour however this also means that it can be used in various other industries. One such industry which has a potentially bright future for Artificial Intelligence technology is the Space Exploration industry, which has already implemented a few AIs and is planning to upgrade and implement more. Outline of Argument: This essay seeks to analyse the core function of AIs and how and why they are useful in the Space Exploration Industry. Scope: The essay will also include a couple examples of present uses of AIs in Space Exploration along with an analysis into their limitations and possible adjustments to make them more self-sufficient as Space requires largely self sufficient mechanisms or environments due to the amount of time it takes to communicate with Earth from distances further than the moon. Worthiness of investigation: This research question is worthy of investigation because it is a potential turning point in both the development of Artificial Intelligence technology and the advancement of Space Exploration (and its technology) to grander heights and it could be one of the keys to travelling to further distances physically. And honestly this is as far as I have gotten, except for a few lines into the actual Introduction. Is this a good start? Or do I need something a little more interesting or important? Any additional advice or constructive criticism which is not a direct answer to any of my questions will also be appreciated and considered. Thank you for your time.
  15. Subjects: SL: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics. HL: Psychology, English A Literature and Language, Swedish A Literature. So, I'm about to start my last year of IB and I've finally started to figure out what I want to study after the IB, which is to study Computer Science. However, when I searched for some Universities, all the ones that I searched for required higher level mathematics. Is higher level math required for all Computer Science programs at all Universities? Does anyone have a suggestion? The location is not a priority so any suggestion would be highly appreciated. (btw im sorry for my english, havent slept that well lol tried my best to write a formal text pls dont judge)
  16. Hi! I'm starting IB after the summer break and I am really interested in computer science, and it is a subject I will take. I understand the implications of taking it for when it comes to uni and that it will have little impact on any uni courses. I will also be taking econ, I'm just a bit afraid because from what I hear cs at HL sounds crazy hard. I am fairly competent in computer databases, systems and whatnot but I still fear that Cs HL would be too hard would changing Cs HL to sl and econ from sl to HL make sense, especially considering I have never taken any courses in economics? Thanks for any responses.
  17. I’m thinking of writing my extended essay about E-commerce and internet security and how many hackers have taken advantage of the poor SSL encryption many big companies have. I got inspired seeing the many cyber-attacks that have happened over the last years. What would be a good question for this kind of topic? Advice, help and recommendations are really appreciated!
  18. i am struggling to decide which one is more practical to satisfy the EE either i compare to models swiftkey and the IOS text prediction software or I look at diffrent models and compare them, i have no idea which one suites the IB better. The focus topic of my EE it based on text generators.
  19. Hi! I currently need to choose subjects for IBDP year 1. I am having some difficulties since I am not exactly sure what I really want to do and I understand that choosing right subjects is very important when applying to universities. I think I am pretty much into engineering and computer science. However, I am also very passionate about Arts so I want to keep the industrial design as an option. So here's my question: 1) Do universities usually require Visual Art HL for industrial design? What are some requirements that I would need to fulfill in order to take ID? 2) What subjects would you recommend me taking if I am interested in ID, engineering, and computer science (I know my area of interest is quite broad now... I would love to keep it open for two years tbh because I change my mind a lot) 3) Would it be possible to do engineering/computer science as my undergraduate course and do ID as a postgraduate course? Thanks
  20. Hey guys, I will start writing my extended essay this month and I am struggling to decide a question for my EE. Here are the two questions that I came up with. What do you think about them? I'm planning to study artificial intelligence so these topics are based on machine learning. what is the relation for linear regression between the size of data set and success rate of the algorithm? I will have various types of data sets and I will decide which is better in a way that I can find a theta that satisfies my data most. To what extent an anomaly in the data set can effect the outcome of linear regression and can it be detect by anomaly detection algorithms? and finding the balance between anomaly and regression outcome This is the one I like more:) given a controlled data set, I will place anomalies and look at its effect on the theta I find and success rate. Then I will use anomaly detection and remove those anomalies. I will compare the success rate and theta with and without anomaly detection.

    Course Selection

Hello, I have finished Grade 10 and will embark upon my IBDP journey starting this August. Quite a few people seemed to be concerned with the difficulty of my course selection. I have chosen the subjects below: Mathematics HL Physics HL English Language and Literature (A2) HL Chemistry SL Business and Management SL Chinese B SL I want to pursue Computer Science in university, hence is why I think Math HL is a must, and I also think that Physics HL would be useful. I am very fluent in Chinese and B SL would not be a problem. What concerns me is Math HL and Physics HL; I enjoy Math and Physics a lot, but I am not necessarily 'good' at Physics. Could anyone give advice on my choices? Help would be appreciated
  22. Hi all. I really want to switch to computer science HL (i take SL) and drop my physics hl because I am afraid it is too hard for me. I am in my first year of IB, my subjects are English A SL, Arabic B HL, ITGS HL, Physics HL, Computer science SL, Math studies SL. The problem is my school does not teach computer science HL (only sl) so I have to teach myself and I am kind of struggling with it. I scored an A- for computer science and a C+ for physics in my first term exams. How can I plan out lessons? Where can I study from? Are there online courses I can take or something? Any extra tips?
  23. Hey Guys, im currently in grade 10 and currently selecting my courses for dp. In the future, I want to study majors like computer science, software, computer or electronic engineering(Possibly). So I am currently planning to take math physics and chemistry for my HL courses. However personally im just not into chem and doesn't really have much passion to study chem in depth. I just wonder if chemistry is HL really required for my desired uni majors? And is taking both physics and chem hl really hard and exhausting? Would switching the chem hl to economics hl put me into disadvantages when applying for those listed university majors? Much appreciated!!!!! ps: Im currently planning to go to uni in possibly UK, US or Canada.
  24. Hi everyone! We just had an EE launch. I'm a Year1 IB student. I want to do Computer science at university and our school does not have IB Computer Science as a subject. Computer Science EE Help

Hello! My EE topic suggestion is due in a few days and I want to do a computer science based one. The problem I have is that I don't have ib computer science offered at my school, but I have a comp sci teacher willing to help me. I have taken many computer science courses so I think I have a good amount of knowledge. I was thinking I could do a paper on something to do with artificial intelligence but I can't seem to find what really are the components of a computer science ee and what is really expected in one. If anyone could give a few examples of what people have done before that would be really useful! Thank you!!
