  1. Um...so the problem is below: I am doing a project called The Periodic Graphics of Elements which basically use graphic design/illustration to visualise and introduce chemical elements. Now I have 30 graphics finished out of 118, and when I hit 50, I am planning to submit the project as a supplementary material for universities along with my art portfolio. (You guys can look at those graphics at my program Alchemy: For that project I have received several good recognition, publication, awards and a handful of followers. My teachers say that this is a 'masterpiece' project and I should carry it on. Specifically, my chem teacher mentioned that people will love my passion and hardwork and no one cares about 4 HLs (I have heard about some people say that 4 HLs could show dedication and hard work as well to the adcoms). So what do you guys think? I choose to keep on my project but I would also like to hear you guys opinions Do you guys think unique extracurriculars or dedication towards an extra subject is more important?
  2. So....I have been browsing this year's admission discussion thread on Chinese Quora. The strange thing is that I found this year, great ECs actually signal rejection. One girl had perfect IB grades (7.0/7.0) every year and had been an active participant in many organisations. Besides this, she is a writer that had her work published (with thousands hundreds views on social media) and a photographer earning a great deal. She got a straight rejection from one of the Ivies. Another guy, had several national/international awards, features, programs and a 40/42 predicted, also got a rejection from a top 5 school. On CC, a guy with a post published on Huffington post also got a straight rejection from an Ivy. However, those with ECs that are not as strong as them and scores similar to them were admitted from those schools. What does this mean?

    Unique Extracurricular vs. 4 HLs

  4. In my opinion, I think CAS is a good thing. It pushes students to have extracurriculars and volunteer experience so they at least have something to offer colleges. However, since CAS is a requirement, do colleges see through it? I'm concerned because I have extremely inconsistent EC's under my belt. Freshman -Actor in the school musical & lettered in drama (whole year) -Writer for the school newspaper (whole year) Sophomore -Swim team (two months) -Member of a selective film jury outside of school (two months) From these two years, I have an idea of what I like to do and don't. The thing is, I'm starting the IB Diploma Program this fall and I feel like colleges will think that my new and improved activities were only initiated because of IB requirements. Will I be seen as a "late bloomer"? I don't want to mention most of my freshman and sophomore EC's on my college applications because I think they'll be perceived as excess with no depth and solid dedication, and because there's a year gap. Tell me if I'm wrong though because the activities that I've planned for junior year are connected to my freshman and sophomore ones (e.g. I'm continuing acting and the film jury). I'm also planning to do a different sport that I'm more interested in than swimming. Yes, I still have two years left until college but mind you, we start applying for college in the beginning of senior year. That technically means that my new extracurricular activities are only 1~1.5 years long versus a kid who's been doing the same activity for 4 years of more. I guess what's bothering me is that, I have my interests but I haven't been doing them since freshman year. I'm worried that it'll shoot me down when I apply for college. What matters most, quality or length? Or both? Hopefully any of you could offer some insight, input, advice, or any help at all.

Does Sports matter to UK Universities?

Hey all! So I attended a talk with some college counsellors yesterday and while this lecture really stuck to US University applications, they really emphasised the importance of a balanced profile between academics, ECs and sports. I have the academics and ECs down and I used to be in the school handball team until last year, but I took a step back since I have so much other stuff going on now that I'm in the IB. I mean I run and exercise to keep fit but that's obvi not like being in a team sport. Can my Indian classical dance training count as an equivalent to a Sport? It definitely takes up a lot of energy and time and stamina! Please let me know because I can always rejoin a sports team at school in IB2 if it's like super impactful on my chances at a top uni in the UK. Thanks a lot! IDOLS
