  1. Hi guys, my EE sort of 'proposal' due date where we seriously consult to the EE supervisors and all that are next week's Wednesday, and honestly I'm still so so confused and I need help or just some suggestions or anything, please. Here are the subjects I am taking: Economics HL, Mathematics HL, Physics HL, Chemistry SL, English A SL, MandarinAB. So, since the start, I've always intended on taking Economics EE because from all my other subjects, it seemed impossible for me. (I've been getting rock bottom scores for Math and the school have no more supervisors for Physics). So, I've been researching a lot for like a few months now, but until now I've got nothing. Initially, I wanted to do about impact of K-Pop in Korea's economy, which would certainly interest me, but the Econs EE supervisor said to do something related to your country, and I'm an Indonesian. I've also searched about topics like tourism, transport, food, etc, but it's really hard for me to relate it to the economics concept especially when it's like about a particular brand like for example McD, etc. And lots of people say that it's leaning more towards Business, and I don't take Business. My economics EE supervisor has been chasing me and all that about topics topics and topics for Econs since he knows that I want to take it, but yesterday he talked to me and said that it's really important for everyone to do an EE on a topic that will surely interest us and something that you are passionate about. He kept on also encouraging the whole class to take a Language EE, like Indonesian B and the subject allows you to talk about a wide range of things like analysing songs, brochures, ads and all that, etc. So, I was quite persuaded by that and I really want to do on something about K-Pop. So, I noticed I could write about K-Pop on these language EEs, but the problem is I don't take Indonesian B and I don't take English A HL (I take A SL), so it would surely be a challenge for me. Even though Indonesian is my first language, I don't know if I could write well, but I really feel like I wanna do this you know, or maybe do English A EE. Another problem is, I don't know how I could relate the topic of K-Pop to these language EEs, can anyone maybe share me your thoughts on my issue please? I really need help. Thank you!!...
  2. Hi guys, I have a proposal for FOA: Part 1 Language in Cultural Context due on Monday, which is in like tomorrow, and I still have no ideas and I'm still so confused. The teacher has only 'taught' us about Martin Luther King Jr's speech analysis and that's it... Like I don't understand about how we are supposed to do this.. Like we have to have a role when we are delivering our FOA? We're not allowed to give like just simple presentations on the analysis of something? I don't understand... Also, how am I supposed to relate language in culture? Like for example, gender and sexism or whatever, how is that related to culture? What is the relation of bilingualism to culture? I don't understand the logic and I will really really appreciate it if someone could enlighten me about these please... I'm like desperate. Thank you...

  5. Hi, does anyone have any tips for preparing for the paper 2 exam? I've been compiling quotes so far but there are just so many quotes I feel would be useful and I don't think I can remember all of them. I remember the plot points and things like that, but for some quotes I'm having trouble analysing them (finding specific literary features). Any tips would be appreciated!!
  6. Hi everybody, I was planning on doing my EE on Advertisements and more specifically... Celebrity endorsements on instagram. However, one of the celebrities that I was planning on writing about deleted his instagram and i am left here wondering if i should scrap my topic and do another one that is 'safer' (gender stereotypes in advertisements) or if i should change from Adidas to Calvin Klein. Your help is much appreciated, thank you
  7. I will be doing my first FOA in a weeks time and I need help coming up with a topic. I plan to do an oral speech and was thinking about the idea of 'comparing and contrasting the portrayal of women in Disney's movies' such as from Cinderella to Moana. But I really don't know what to do, or how to get started on my FOA! Does anyone have any tips on how to start and what to talk about??
  8. I would really benefit from help in this topic, I'm a fluent English speaker, but I can't seem to master this topic. I always get unsatisfactory grades in class such as twos are threes and it really beats me down. Can someone help? Thanks it would really be appreciated!
  9. After much thought, I have decided I'm going to try and write an English A language-based essay. Here's hoping it'll be fun! This is my Extended Essay diary- maybe it'll be helpful to someone! If anyone else is writing an English A essay, please do let me know- maybe we can help each other! Creating a Topic I actually came up with a possible idea quite a while ago, but I forgot about it in favour of a tie between a history essay and an English essay. I wanted to write it about music, but after reading the EE guidelines for a Language A essay, my idea sailed right out the window. Oh well- I managed to come up with a new idea after discussing some of the ideas with my friends. For now, I have permission to go ahead with my topic from my supervisor, so I'm working on finding a research question and finding some more sources. Research Question As of now, I have a pretty firm research question, and I've already started researching! I'm reading some background information about the topic so I can better analyse my sources, and I've got to say it's really interesting!
  10. How does one determine the overall meaning of a book? Not looking for themes/motifs, rather something more like author's intent or what the novel brings to light. I can often think of several ideas but nothing that I feel is enough.
  11. Hello, I was wondering if there are any restrictions on the uses of fonts and graphology in general in written tasks for English A (Language and Literature). I'm writing a diary entry for my written task and I wanted to use a handwritten font for it. Thanks.
  12. I have to write the written task for my English A:Language and Literature course. I have chosen a topic from Part 1 of the course, Language and Power. I thought about taking the perspective of a political leader who talks about the perils of poverty and methods to alleviate it. My source is ttps://www.brookings.edu/research/what-are-the-presidential-candidates-saying-about-poverty-and-opportunity/ Now, my question is whether this is an appropriate source for the topic. EDIT- This could also be from part 2 of the English Language and Literature Course and more specifically from 'Language and presentation of speeches and campaigns'.
  13. Hi, Are advertisements (and references to movies/shows) suitable primary data sources for an FOA on cultural and gender stereotyping? Thanks! My FOA is in 2 days!!
  14. Hi! So, I've just finished my first month of the IB programme. I am planning to apply to medicine in the UK. Theoretically, I have picked all of the subjects that are required (chemistry&biology HL). However, I am concerned about English even though I'm aware the choice between English A and B is not that important for universities (and there is nothing mentioned about in in entry requirements). Currently, I'm attending English B classes, but it is the last possibility to transfer this week. On the one hand, English B is more likely to provide me with a 7 on the exam + it would allow me to focus on biology and chemistry for medicine (as there is definitely less work) However, my tutor claims that English A would prepare me better for the interview and would make my language sound "native". I do like literature, but I dread that it would be too time-consuming and that writing and literature would continuously have a negative impact on my grades from bio and chemistry. The case is: which option should I choose to maximize my chances of applying to medicine with success? Is English A really that demanding and tough? Is it worth to risk my bio-chem grades in order to strengthen my language skills? Is choosing English A really crucial to do well on the interview or staying on English B is enough? Thank you for your opinions
  15. Hi guys! I would love to know what you think about my IB subject choices. I started the IB programme one month ago, so I still have same time to change my mind. Right now I am studying: English A, French B, Mathematics & Geography - HL Polish A, Biology - SL Could you please tell what you think about this set? What courses could I take at the university level? Personally I have thought about economics, finances, law or something connected with french language. I will be extremely grateful for your help Have a nice day! xxx

  20. Hi guys! In September I am going to enter the IB programme. One of the subjects I dread the most is English A HL. I am not an English native (I am Polish), therefore I would like to ask for any advice on how I can prepare for the programme over the summer. An exam I have recently taken assessed my English level as C1. I will be grateful for your opinion and advice. Take care
  21. Hello everyone, I hope you guys are doing well. I would like to ask if you guys have any advice regarding Paper 1 for English A SL. My teacher recommend us to use the Big 5 and to have a thesis statement that we should always come back to it after every point. What do you think about it? Do you have any other approach? Thank you, D.
  22. In our school, it's about time where we start on our extended essay topics, I personally choose to write a psychology EE however, due to the limitation of our teachers I was assigned to my second choice which was English. I choose English A HL for my language course, I was personally going to read The Great Gatsby and use it for my EE, however, for our HL unit we're reading it at the moment. ;( I just wanna ask if there any books for recommendation to write the EE and tips/example topics as well. Thank you!
  23. I'm doing my IOP on 1984 by George Orwell and how is it similar to president trump. should I change my topic?
  24. I have used many ideas in my English A written task from other opinion columns. I'm afraid if I cite the sources, the examiner might think that my WT is not original and take away a few marks. For example, if someone had written " Have you ever seen a crying baby? Babies are aware.." Then I would write "If you have ever seen a baby crying, you will notice that babies are aware ....". Is this plagiarism? I am using the exact same ideas but just chaning the words a little. Can the examiners detect this? And what would happen if they find the opinion columns I have used?
  25. Hey all, So I have my IO this Monday. Individuals in our class work in pairs of two for the IO. We have read Medea by Euripides. My topic is as follows: Consider the ways in which Greek drama is constructed – how are dramatic conventions used and how do these differ from/are alike modern drama? Consider when, how, and where Greek drama was predominantly performed. In relation to this, consider Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy. Now I have found out a little about the structure. There is a prologue and then the chorus enters. Thereafter there is an alternation between episodes (interaction between actors) and choral odes (songs/chants). At first I thought that Shakespearean drama is considered to be modern drama but its actually plays written in the 19th 20th centuries. I also noticed that Greek drama follows freyard's pyramid. I don't really get what dramatic conventions mean though. I have tried googling but its not clear. Could someone please shed some light on this? Also if someone has some general advice for the reflective statement and the IO it would help greatly. Thanks!
