  1. Hi, Are advertisements (and references to movies/shows) suitable primary data sources for an FOA on cultural and gender stereotyping? Thanks! My FOA is in 2 days!!
  2. How does one determine the overall meaning of a book? Not looking for themes/motifs, rather something more like author's intent or what the novel brings to light. I can often think of several ideas but nothing that I feel is enough.
  3. Hi! So, I've just finished my first month of the IB programme. I am planning to apply to medicine in the UK. Theoretically, I have picked all of the subjects that are required (chemistry&biology HL). However, I am concerned about English even though I'm aware the choice between English A and B is not that important for universities (and there is nothing mentioned about in in entry requirements). Currently, I'm attending English B classes, but it is the last possibility to transfer this week. On the one hand, English B is more likely to provide me with a 7 on the exam + it would allow me to focus on biology and chemistry for medicine (as there is definitely less work) However, my tutor claims that English A would prepare me better for the interview and would make my language sound "native". I do like literature, but I dread that it would be too time-consuming and that writing and literature would continuously have a negative impact on my grades from bio and chemistry. The case is: which option should I choose to maximize my chances of applying to medicine with success? Is English A really that demanding and tough? Is it worth to risk my bio-chem grades in order to strengthen my language skills? Is choosing English A really crucial to do well on the interview or staying on English B is enough? Thank you for your opinions
  4. Hi guys! I would love to know what you think about my IB subject choices. I started the IB programme one month ago, so I still have same time to change my mind. Right now I am studying: English A, French B, Mathematics & Geography - HL Polish A, Biology - SL Could you please tell what you think about this set? What courses could I take at the university level? Personally I have thought about economics, finances, law or something connected with french language. I will be extremely grateful for your help Have a nice day! xxx
  5. Hi I'm planning to do my WIT Essay on Medea by Euripides, but I'm really struggling to come up with a topic. HELP ;-;
  6. I'm writing my EE for English A and I'm not sure if this is clarified anywhere but when citing sources, if I'm using e.g. wikipedia can I just use the source displayed by wikipedia? Or do I need to cite the wikipedia article?

  9. Hi guys! In September I am going to enter the IB programme. One of the subjects I dread the most is English A HL. I am not an English native (I am Polish), therefore I would like to ask for any advice on how I can prepare for the programme over the summer. An exam I have recently taken assessed my English level as C1. I will be grateful for your opinion and advice. Take care
  10. Hello everyone, I hope you guys are doing well. I would like to ask if you guys have any advice regarding Paper 1 for English A SL. My teacher recommend us to use the Big 5 and to have a thesis statement that we should always come back to it after every point. What do you think about it? Do you have any other approach? Thank you, D.
  11. In our school, it's about time where we start on our extended essay topics, I personally choose to write a psychology EE however, due to the limitation of our teachers I was assigned to my second choice which was English. I choose English A HL for my language course, I was personally going to read The Great Gatsby and use it for my EE, however, for our HL unit we're reading it at the moment. ;( I just wanna ask if there any books for recommendation to write the EE and tips/example topics as well. Thank you!
  12. I'm doing my IOP on 1984 by George Orwell and how is it similar to president trump. should I change my topic?
  13. I have used many ideas in my English A written task from other opinion columns. I'm afraid if I cite the sources, the examiner might think that my WT is not original and take away a few marks. For example, if someone had written " Have you ever seen a crying baby? Babies are aware.." Then I would write "If you have ever seen a baby crying, you will notice that babies are aware ....". Is this plagiarism? I am using the exact same ideas but just chaning the words a little. Can the examiners detect this? And what would happen if they find the opinion columns I have used?
  14. Hey all, So I have my IO this Monday. Individuals in our class work in pairs of two for the IO. We have read Medea by Euripides. My topic is as follows: Consider the ways in which Greek drama is constructed – how are dramatic conventions used and how do these differ from/are alike modern drama? Consider when, how, and where Greek drama was predominantly performed. In relation to this, consider Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy. Now I have found out a little about the structure. There is a prologue and then the chorus enters. Thereafter there is an alternation between episodes (interaction between actors) and choral odes (songs/chants). At first I thought that Shakespearean drama is considered to be modern drama but its actually plays written in the 19th 20th centuries. I also noticed that Greek drama follows freyard's pyramid. I don't really get what dramatic conventions mean though. I have tried googling but its not clear. Could someone please shed some light on this? Also if someone has some general advice for the reflective statement and the IO it would help greatly. Thanks!
  15. Hey all, I just got my IOP grade for English A SL. I got 22/30 a grade 6. I was told that the grade does not matter at this point, only the points since they are added to the IOC points next year to get a grade. I also understand that the IOP is 15% of the grade and the IOP together with the IOC is 30% (right?). Anyway I knew it would be hard to hit a 7 but I am not really satisfied with what I got, I was expecting more. Is a 7 still within reach for my final grade? Need some motivation, I feel like this is a bad grade. I haven't had literature before the IB and it took me up until now to get a feel for what a thesis means and some of the literary devices. I am a science student but don't want my IB score to fall because of one subject. What would be a good approach to ensure a high final grade in English. I mean in Math and Physics I would generally just practise and solve exercises but I am not sure about English. p.s. I don't suppose it is possible to redo the IOP? Thanks!
  16. Hello~ I am in 9th grade currently, and I am planning on applying at MIT and Harvard when I graduate. I heard that both of these schools look at your reports from grade 9 onwards. However, I am on the borderline of a 6 and 7 (6.9) for my semester 1 english a report. Will this be a 6 or a 7 for my final report? Should I also ask the teacher if there are any extra tasks I can do to raise my grade? Thanks

  18. Hey all, I take English A SL and need to do my IOP after Christmas break. I have decided to do it on The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. My Thesis is: "The story creates an atmosphere that conveys a dark theme of insecurity and instability". I was to talk about punctuation, repetition, diction , the narrator , and the vulture eye (symbolism). My teacher says the thesis is too vague, that it needs to be falsifiable. What does this mean? And what can I come up with as an alternative. I want to be done quickly so that I can rehearse and perfect my presentation. All help is appreciated, I haven't had English literature before.
  19. I'm doing my IOP on Things Fall Apart and my topic is the indirect characterization of Okonkwo through his relationship with Nwoye, Obierika, Ezinma and Unoka. I will have three characteristics of Okonkwo and support my arguments with evidence from Okonkwo's interactions with the other characters. I want to make my IOP more creative so I will be using a mind map to illustrate Okonkwo's relationships. However, if I do not want to use a powerpoint, how can I add quotes into my presentation? Is there any other way to approach an analytical IOP so it engages the audience?
  20. Hi, So I am 2 months into my IB program (1st year). I take English A LaL at Higher Level, and I was wondering what it really takes to ace this subject (a 7)? I would love it if you guys can give me some tips for getting a 7.. What kind of flair or analysis is required to get to that top band? P.S: My teacher told me that she never met a person who got a 7 in this subject in her career (except for 1).
  21. Hey guys, I will be writing my essay on English, and I take the A class, so what should I consider when I'm looking for a topic? Which one should I give more attention to - how a poet uses literary devices or how the literary devices serve to emphasize a certain opinion/theme?
  22. I am doing my Extended Essay in English A, with a focus on unreliable narration in one particular book. However, I'm quite worried about the lack of sources I have. Since it's not a heavily 'research based' paper (which seems kind of contradictory to EE since it is known as a research paper), I only have two/three sources at the moment, (one of them being the novel I'm writing about). I know the mark scheme says "an imaginative range of appropriate sources have been consulted", however this is relatively vague (and understandably so). I guess my question is: is two sources for an English EE an 'imaginative range' or not? Thank you for any and all feedback!
  23. Does the rq "How does Hemingway portray the importance of dying proudly in The Old Man and the Sea" sound like a good idea? I want to use this book but I really don't know what on earth to do with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You! Fede.
  24. Hello, so basically I read a post about EEs on English A1 and it said that you mustn't choose a novel that you've studied in class. I just wanted to make sure if this is true or not as I've been looking around for a while and I haven't found anything that would support this. Thank you!
