  1. Hey! I've just started IBY1 and until the end of September, I can make changes to my subjects. So I'm wondering if I should take English B HL instead of English A HL (which I'm taking now). I've always been quite good at English however it's not my native language and that's why I'm afraid if I can handle English A HL. I'm most stressed about the interpretations and analyses of the texts during the final exams. I'm quite good at writing but I'm not sure about analyzing. I'm also already taking 3 other HL subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Geography) and I want to make it easier for me and have the best results possible and since I'm not planning on studying anything especially English- or even humanities-related (such as English literature, law etc.), I think I won't really use the knowledge I gained in English A classes, will only have to struggle with it during the 2 years and never use it again. Thanks in advance for any pieces of advice!!
  2. Hello, thanks in advance for your answer. My friend has a very high probability of repeating one year. Under what conditions does a person stay in the second year in ib (11 grade) ? If in the first term (grade 11) the student receives 1,2,2,7,5,6. And in the third term (grade 11 ) he has 7,6,7,3,2,4 + A (TOK) will my friend have repeat a grade ? (Retention one year ) (CAS has done ) My friend is very nervous about this, but I don't know anything about falling conditions in ib. Thank you 😊
  3. I was wondering if you are allowed to write about texts that you learnt outside of class and is in the booklist but didn't learn with the teacher in class? Like, are you even allowed?
  4. For Paper 2 in English A Lang & Lit HL, my class studied multiple poems written by Philip Larkin and Murakami's "Kafka on the Shore". My question is: in Paper 2, we have to refer to two texts that we have studied in class, so, if I choose to cover "Kafka on the Shore" and Larkin, should I talk about only one of his poems? Or can I talk about a number of his poems?
  5. Hi, I am struggling with getting all 3 marks with the reflective statement. My teacher keeps telling me that I should add more points, but I find it especially hard since theres a 300-400 words limit. Does anyone have advice on how to get all 3 marks while staying in the word limit?
  6. so guys I'm doing my extended essay in english a on pride and prejudice. my RQ is- How does the the author use irony to develop the plot and structure of pride and prejudice? I've to mark ALL the ironies given in the book and I'm running short on time. does anyone have an idea where i can get them online or something?
  7. Hi, guys. My EE topic due date is like literally tomorrow, so I really need major suggestions by people. (I have ideas below.) I'm taking English A SL, but I'm considering to take Category 3 English Extended Essay. Are there any other people who are in the same situation as me? Taking English EE but it's not their HL subject? I approached and talked to my English teacher / English Supervisor today and like they kinda don't recommend me to do it because my English language proficiency need to be Very high, especially when the markers are Native English speakers, so they'd expect so highly in terms of the language use, etc... But, like my situation is so complicated. Actually my first choice is supposed to be Economics EE, but until now I haven't got any idea to link my interests (K-Pop) to an economic theory, and it's literally tomorrow... I mean I kinda have a rough RQ for that one, but I don't know if it uses a lot of economic theory... So, I still have to find one in case my English EE really gets rejected, but it's really tough when I can't think of an economic theory. But anyways, if I were to do an English EE, I wanted to analyse various songs by this particular Korean boy band (BTS) and how it reflects the conditions in Korea as well as how they have influenced the society in the world, which is through their lyrics. (I can tell you my exact RQ through PM.) I thought it was a good idea at first and I can personally envision myself enjoying when writing it (well at least compared to Econs) I think, plus my EE coordinator (which is also my EE Econs supervisor) strongly encourage students, encouraged me, to do an EE on something I'm passionate about. But, right now, I don't know if this is a good idea for an English EE anymore because my English EE supervisor wasn't convinced, like they have to see if my English proficiency is high enough (but I'm actually not quite confident in that, I just really like the topic that I've thought on), whether analysing songs would reach 4000 words, and whether the topic is good enough, etc. So I'm going here to hopefully be able to see people's thoughts on my situation. So, please, please, please help me, just throw in your thoughts or like anything, what do you guys think about it? Do you guys think it's not doable too? Thank you so much!
  8. Hi guys, my EE sort of 'proposal' due date where we seriously consult to the EE supervisors and all that are next week's Wednesday, and honestly I'm still so so confused and I need help or just some suggestions or anything, please. Here are the subjects I am taking: Economics HL, Mathematics HL, Physics HL, Chemistry SL, English A SL, MandarinAB. So, since the start, I've always intended on taking Economics EE because from all my other subjects, it seemed impossible for me. (I've been getting rock bottom scores for Math and the school have no more supervisors for Physics). So, I've been researching a lot for like a few months now, but until now I've got nothing. Initially, I wanted to do about impact of K-Pop in Korea's economy, which would certainly interest me, but the Econs EE supervisor said to do something related to your country, and I'm an Indonesian. I've also searched about topics like tourism, transport, food, etc, but it's really hard for me to relate it to the economics concept especially when it's like about a particular brand like for example McD, etc. And lots of people say that it's leaning more towards Business, and I don't take Business. My economics EE supervisor has been chasing me and all that about topics topics and topics for Econs since he knows that I want to take it, but yesterday he talked to me and said that it's really important for everyone to do an EE on a topic that will surely interest us and something that you are passionate about. He kept on also encouraging the whole class to take a Language EE, like Indonesian B and the subject allows you to talk about a wide range of things like analysing songs, brochures, ads and all that, etc. So, I was quite persuaded by that and I really want to do on something about K-Pop. So, I noticed I could write about K-Pop on these language EEs, but the problem is I don't take Indonesian B and I don't take English A HL (I take A SL), so it would surely be a challenge for me. Even though Indonesian is my first language, I don't know if I could write well, but I really feel like I wanna do this you know, or maybe do English A EE. Another problem is, I don't know how I could relate the topic of K-Pop to these language EEs, can anyone maybe share me your thoughts on my issue please? I really need help. Thank you!!...
  9. Hi guys, I have a proposal for FOA: Part 1 Language in Cultural Context due on Monday, which is in like tomorrow, and I still have no ideas and I'm still so confused. The teacher has only 'taught' us about Martin Luther King Jr's speech analysis and that's it... Like I don't understand about how we are supposed to do this.. Like we have to have a role when we are delivering our FOA? We're not allowed to give like just simple presentations on the analysis of something? I don't understand... Also, how am I supposed to relate language in culture? Like for example, gender and sexism or whatever, how is that related to culture? What is the relation of bilingualism to culture? I don't understand the logic and I will really really appreciate it if someone could enlighten me about these please... I'm like desperate. Thank you...

  12. Hi, does anyone have any tips for preparing for the paper 2 exam? I've been compiling quotes so far but there are just so many quotes I feel would be useful and I don't think I can remember all of them. I remember the plot points and things like that, but for some quotes I'm having trouble analysing them (finding specific literary features). Any tips would be appreciated!!
  13. Hi everybody, I was planning on doing my EE on Advertisements and more specifically... Celebrity endorsements on instagram. However, one of the celebrities that I was planning on writing about deleted his instagram and i am left here wondering if i should scrap my topic and do another one that is 'safer' (gender stereotypes in advertisements) or if i should change from Adidas to Calvin Klein. Your help is much appreciated, thank you
  14. I will be doing my first FOA in a weeks time and I need help coming up with a topic. I plan to do an oral speech and was thinking about the idea of 'comparing and contrasting the portrayal of women in Disney's movies' such as from Cinderella to Moana. But I really don't know what to do, or how to get started on my FOA! Does anyone have any tips on how to start and what to talk about??
  15. I would really benefit from help in this topic, I'm a fluent English speaker, but I can't seem to master this topic. I always get unsatisfactory grades in class such as twos are threes and it really beats me down. Can someone help? Thanks it would really be appreciated!
  16. After much thought, I have decided I'm going to try and write an English A language-based essay. Here's hoping it'll be fun! This is my Extended Essay diary- maybe it'll be helpful to someone! If anyone else is writing an English A essay, please do let me know- maybe we can help each other! Creating a Topic I actually came up with a possible idea quite a while ago, but I forgot about it in favour of a tie between a history essay and an English essay. I wanted to write it about music, but after reading the EE guidelines for a Language A essay, my idea sailed right out the window. Oh well- I managed to come up with a new idea after discussing some of the ideas with my friends. For now, I have permission to go ahead with my topic from my supervisor, so I'm working on finding a research question and finding some more sources. Research Question As of now, I have a pretty firm research question, and I've already started researching! I'm reading some background information about the topic so I can better analyse my sources, and I've got to say it's really interesting!
  17. How does one determine the overall meaning of a book? Not looking for themes/motifs, rather something more like author's intent or what the novel brings to light. I can often think of several ideas but nothing that I feel is enough.
  18. Hello, I was wondering if there are any restrictions on the uses of fonts and graphology in general in written tasks for English A (Language and Literature). I'm writing a diary entry for my written task and I wanted to use a handwritten font for it. Thanks.
  19. I have to write the written task for my English A:Language and Literature course. I have chosen a topic from Part 1 of the course, Language and Power. I thought about taking the perspective of a political leader who talks about the perils of poverty and methods to alleviate it. My source is ttps://www.brookings.edu/research/what-are-the-presidential-candidates-saying-about-poverty-and-opportunity/ Now, my question is whether this is an appropriate source for the topic. EDIT- This could also be from part 2 of the English Language and Literature Course and more specifically from 'Language and presentation of speeches and campaigns'.
  20. Hi, Are advertisements (and references to movies/shows) suitable primary data sources for an FOA on cultural and gender stereotyping? Thanks! My FOA is in 2 days!!
  21. Hi! So, I've just finished my first month of the IB programme. I am planning to apply to medicine in the UK. Theoretically, I have picked all of the subjects that are required (chemistry&biology HL). However, I am concerned about English even though I'm aware the choice between English A and B is not that important for universities (and there is nothing mentioned about in in entry requirements). Currently, I'm attending English B classes, but it is the last possibility to transfer this week. On the one hand, English B is more likely to provide me with a 7 on the exam + it would allow me to focus on biology and chemistry for medicine (as there is definitely less work) However, my tutor claims that English A would prepare me better for the interview and would make my language sound "native". I do like literature, but I dread that it would be too time-consuming and that writing and literature would continuously have a negative impact on my grades from bio and chemistry. The case is: which option should I choose to maximize my chances of applying to medicine with success? Is English A really that demanding and tough? Is it worth to risk my bio-chem grades in order to strengthen my language skills? Is choosing English A really crucial to do well on the interview or staying on English B is enough? Thank you for your opinions
  22. Hi guys! I would love to know what you think about my IB subject choices. I started the IB programme one month ago, so I still have same time to change my mind. Right now I am studying: English A, French B, Mathematics & Geography - HL Polish A, Biology - SL Could you please tell what you think about this set? What courses could I take at the university level? Personally I have thought about economics, finances, law or something connected with french language. I will be extremely grateful for your help Have a nice day! xxx
