  1. Hey, guys. For my ESS IA, I am investigating the relationship between average income and water usage, and as a result, I have made a questionnaire. I would be thankful if you could spend a few minutes filling out the form. The link:- https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc2CSMeYJBg8Yp0xo1QUpnlPm8Wmx5GG8oN-QKC8BypK3KcAw/viewform Thanks, guys!!!!
  2. Hi!! This is my second year of IB and in order to study ESS more efficiently, I made a summary of the whole book. Let me know if you want it
  3. What would be the better science for Japanese university (G30 program in general) ESS or CHEM SL is there a business course in this program?? if you have any advice for this program, please comment
  4. Hey guys, I would really appreciate it if you guys could fill out this questionnaire for my ESS IA. (Edit: I have made changes to my survey and the new link is given below) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc2CSMeYJBg8Yp0xo1QUpnlPm8Wmx5GG8oN-QKC8BypK3KcAw/viewform
  5. I want to finish my ESS IA before the new school year begins and I don't really know how to write a good ESS IA (by good I mean I have to get a 7 or a 6). I thought of doing it on air pollution and for now my research question is: To what extent do distances from the Western Pomeranian coast in Poland affect the growth of lichens? However, a) I don't really like to use lichens as indicators of air pollution, is there any other, preferably SIMPLER, way of examining it? b) if you have any important advice for ESS IA pls share your wisdom I would greatly appreciate it
  6. Hi, I would appreciate it if you guys would take some time to fill out a questionnaire for my ESS IA. LINK- https://goo.gl/forms/ZClR3gI2o61pd6772 Thanks!
  7. My research question is: How significant do different sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Tokyo and Auckland contribute to carbon dioxide pollution? I chose these two areas because I want to compare a densely populated city with a coastal city. I'm also planning on comparing a sparsely populated city as well but I just can't come up with a good option. Can you give some suggestions about the sparsely populated city I should use? (City with good data is preferable)
  8. Helloooo I am really new to this but I really need help. I need to get my IA proposal done by this week but I'm still struggling. For my IA, I am planning on doing 'How does soil salinity affect the growth of mung beans?' I was going to collect soil from 5 different areas then calculate the ECe to determine the soil salinity then start planting. However, after I talked with my teacher, he suggested that there are too many uncontrolled variable and that I should just start out with the same soil then use salt water to increase the salinity. My problem is that I tried to search up how to make salt water and the amount needed for it to be normal but I am getting nothing. I am really not good in science. I would really appreciate any help I can get. Thank you
  9. Hello, Does anyone know what the word count for an ESS IA is and if there is any abstract required? Thank you very much
  10. Hey everyone! I will be doing IBDP next year, and I have chosen PPE as my future course in the university. However, I am not sure about my IB subjects. I have a list of my choices : Azerbaijani A (my first language) SL English B SL/HL Maths HL Biology or ESS SL (not sure about it because i dont need neither of them, i just want to get the easiest one) which one should I choose? Economics HL Global Politics or Geo or History HL/SL ( I am not sure about this one either because people recommend me each and every of them, I think global politics would me more useful but I’m not sure) which one would be more useful?
  11. Help! I am yet to start the IB, and I cant decide whether to choose Economics or ESS at SL. I would like to study pharmaceuticals at university, so neither of them are to important. So do I go to ESS because it is easier, and max my score, or do economics, because it might be helpful when Im already in a job. Thank you
  12. I need some urgent guidance regarding my IB subject choices for next year!!! This is what I've entered; English Lit A HL Economics HL History HL Maths SL Environmental systems and societies SL Mandarin ab initio SL However, I still have the opportunity to make changes so I thought I'd ask for some thoughts on them before I finalise. First of all - do they seem optimal for law at Russel Group/Ivy Leauge unis? English Lit, Economics, Maths and Mandarin are more or less definite so I am left with two concerns; I am considering swapping out History HL to Global Politics HL. Mainly because Global Politics appeared very interesting but also as I reckon History will be much harder to get a good score in. I came to UK boarding school this year which is year 11/5th form so I am doing an accelerated GCSE course - meaning my subject choices for GCSE were limited and I couldn't do the full GCSE for History (I have history lessons for experience but am not sitting exams). On the other hand, though, I know History is well respected by unis and sure would benefit me if I'll study law. Help!!! History HL or Global Politics HL? Second concern - At first I didn't doubt choosing ESS for a second because I just wanted to get rid of the sciences but I have heard a lot recently, even from the teacher of ESS, that it is a soft subject. I got A*s in all my triple science mocks and am predicted A*s as well - so it is not that I would struggle with for example Biology; I just chose ESS purely because I don't find bio/chem/physics interesting. Is it really such a "soft subject" and does it even matter if I want to do law/international relations etc. at uni? if so should I consider biology instead?
  13. Hi, I am currently an MYP student and the time to choose my subjects for next year is coming up so I just wanted some advice on what people thought of my choices and whether I'm biting off more than I can chew. For background knowledge about my subject choices, I'm aiming to get into a CS college. HL - Math, Physics, Computer Science SL - English, Spanish, ESS I know that chemistry is traditionally a subject for CS but I'm personally very bad with the subject and I've heard that HL and SL chem are quite difficult, and considering the fact that my HL's are already quite rigorous on their own, I wasn't sure if it was the best idea to add chem to the workload. I'm also not really sure about ESS yet, I want to take either ESS or a humanities subject that won't be as demanding as some of the other options. So I'm just wondering whether my subject choices are cohesive and whether I should be taking chem or maybe switching out ESS for a humanities subject? Thanks for reading.
  14. Hello, I found a really good IA topic online for ESS, I wanted to know if it's okay for me to do the same thing? Obviously mine will have different data etc.. but is this allowed?
  15. Hi, I'm on the fence about a few of my IB courses. I want to major in Psychology and attend an Ivy League Law school after I graduate. I wanted to do History but our school, unfortunately, doesn't offer it. I'm currently in grade 10 Chemistry and have an A-plus; moreover, I'll be doing grade 10 Biology next semester. Apart from the fact that I like Biology, I believe that taking that course will make me appear to be a more well-rounded student who is good at both sciences and social sciences. I've never taken Psychology or Business classes before; however, I'm interested in them, especially Psychology. Option 1: HL: English, Psychology, Biology SL: French, Math, Business and Management Option 2: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Environmental Systems and Societies Option 3: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Biology
  16. Hi! I'm a junior and just started the IB. I absolutely love ESS and did pretty well on my first couple of tests, projects and assignments, and my teacher offered me something that hasn't been offered to any other student at my school before (hence why I'm asking here!). He offered me to condense the whole 1 and a half year course into 1 year and complete my ESS exams in May of 2018. I will have a study hall in place of that block for all of grade 12, which will give me more time to work on my projects, college applications, CAS instead of having to worry about another subject. I would love to know your opinions on this. A couple of background facts: - My other subjects are History, Literature, Theatre, Russian Literature and Math Studies - I'm extremely hard-working and motivated if I have to be. - All I do after school is the play + a couple of clubs, but I'm managing them with ease - This teacher is moving at the end of this year, which means I'll have to adjust to a new ESS teacher if I don't follow through with this plan
  17. Hello, so I'm kind of new to this and will be starting IB next year (this use to be my sister's account who has already graduated). Before the term ended, my school gave the 10th grade a little orientation regarding the DP for next year. They gave us our subject selection sheet and currently, I'm beating myself over which one I should take. I'm not really a scientific person nor am I interested in learning about the Earth (as bad as that sounds). So the best advice that I could receive is which subject is the most easiest for me to pass and who knows, which one of them might interest me later on. Bio SL or ESS SL?
  18. Hi, this year i'm going to enter grade 11 and start my IB diploma program. I am aiming to study petroleum engineering in the future since i am great at chemistry. I was wondering if you can give opinions on 3 of the 6 subjects i have taken. Chemistry Hl, Physics SL, ESS SL. I am still not sure about the ESS... should i go for business, economy or even Design and Technology instead of ESS? All of these subjects are somehow useful. Thanks for reading.
  19. Which subject according to the overall experience is better? Both of business SL and ess fit my other choice of subjects (engineering is my track btw) I just need to hear other people's opinions about each. When it comes to the IAs, content, etc. so that I'll be aware of all of the aspects before finalizing any decision. YOUR REPLY WOULD BE APPRECIATED!
  20. Is silt loam good soil for agriculture?
  21. So the topic for my EE is "Investigating the impacts on Cayenne pepper growth, in terms of size, mass, and life expectancy, using treatment of organic and artificial fertilizer, and by considering its consequences to the environment." but is this a Biology or an ESS topic for EE?? I can't tell which is the one since there is a thin border between Biology and ESS.
  22. Hi, everyone. I have some struggles with my ESS IA. I decided to look at the water quality of the lake. I got physicochemical measurements such as DO, Suspended substances, PH, BOD-5, ammonia, and nitrite. My context is to see how this water quality may affect the lake ecosystem. What do you think are the most important indicators? What formulas or evaluations can I use?
  23. Hey, Time to write my ESS IA is coming soon and I wanted to get a head start. I was hoping you could help me get some ideas for an ESS Survey IA in a metropolitan city as I don't have access to any equipment (which is why I want to do a survey). I appreciate any advice or ideas. Thank you in advance.

I'm thinking of doing my ESS Internal Assessment on the Lotka-Volterra Model. It is a set of differential equations which help calculate some variables in prey predator relationships. But I'M not quite what I could do since only explaining the equations and the model using graphs and stuff would probably not be enough for a high score. What else can I do about this topic?
  25. Hey guys, I am writing the extended essay regarding desalination plants (subject: ESS). It is mostly based on secondary sources (statistics), however some primary data will be presented. My problem is that some of the secondary data that I used may be considered out of date as it is from around 2010-2015. Therefore, I sometimes have to compare two different locations based on data from different years (maximum of 5 years difference). Would I loose marks for this? Thank you!
