    A sample of gas trapped in a piston is heated and compressed at the same time. This results in a doubling of temperature and halving of the volume. If the initial pressure was 100 kPa, what will the new final pressure be?
  2. So, I haven't actually started the IB yet, (I'm in PRE-IB, starting IB next year), and will be taking HL Maths. My maths teacher gave the the following question: "A CD has 10 different songs on it.The CD is put on shuffle and repeat, so no matter which song plays, any one of the 10 songs could be up next. What is the probability that at least one of the songs will be played at least 3 times before all of the songs have been played at least once." I NEED help with this question, or it will drive me crazy. So, i thought working out the probability of this NOT happening would be easier, and then just subtract that from one. So, for this not to happen, once all the songs have been played at least once, all the songs need to have played either once or twice right? (No more, no less) So, let the number of songs that play twice be x. We know that x ∈ {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}. So, i just need to calculate the probability for x to be any of these values. P(x=0) = ((10/10)(9/10)(8/10)...(1/10)1) * (10!/(0!*(10-0)!) P(x=1) = ((10/10)(9/10)(8/10)....(1/10)2) * (11!/(2!*(11-2)!) P(x=2) = ((10/10)(9/10)(8/10)....(1/10)4) * (12!/(4!*(12-4)!) etc. Then I can calculate P(x=∈ {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}), and 1 - P(x=∈ {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}) should be my answer, correct? What i want to know is if this way of solving the problem is correct. If not, what's wrong? Additionally, this will take a long time to calculate, is there (i assume there must be, but as I sad, I'm not in the IB yet, so i haven't learned any of the fancy techniques) an easier way to solve this? Sincerely, A future IB student who is about to lose his sanity.
  3. Hello! I´ve been thinking about my Bio IA and I had an idea but now I have to change it. I´ve come up with something but to be honest I´m not sure if my topic is good enough for Bio SL, so I´d appreciate if any of you could give me your opinion. My topic: I would measure the sweat rate per hour of 3 men and 3 women practicing 3 different sports. Some studies have showed that men tend to have a bigger sweat rate than women so my experiment would try to support that hypothesis. I feel like the experiment is too easy, and apart from doing some calculations to get the sweat rate and plotting my results I don´t think I´m doing a really deep analysis. Maybe I can change it up a little bit, but I would like to know if any of you have any ideas on how to make my topic a better choice for my Bio SL IA.

  5. Hi! I'm just new to this website and decided to try and get some expert help (you guys). So, I was thinking of doing my ee under the theme of sports, exercise and health science. I'm going in the direction of results and consequences of sports injuries. Along the lines of therapy and psychological effect. Since this spectrum is quite broad I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how I could narrow it down? If someone could possibly throw out a few a few directions I could go (title focus etc.) that'd be much appreciated!! Thanks! Annelise328

  9. Finally took the time to get around to this... So a key thing that must be on a lot of students' minds must be their fitness. Want to lose weight, or bulk up? Want to talk about what exercises you can do, dietary tips, proudly discuss your successes, or even draw some motivation? I'm thinking that if there was a subforum for this, it would be useful and popular, as everybody is interested in at least some aspect of it, whether it is weightlifting, cardio, competitive sport, eating better... etc. So, if you agree, we could start a protest or something, I don't know... comment, like, create posters, write letters in, emotional videos... I joke... Anyway, so what are your guys' goals and/or tactics? I for one used to visit the gym very regularly but entrance into IB2 / Year 13 put that to an end and I've been struggling to find the time to get back into it, so my personal ambition is to lean up a bit through any dietary improvements and cardio, and find the time/money to head back to the gym that hasn't seen me in months! ^^ What keeps you motivated? Does playing a sport/ doing exercise help you to keep focused on your studies?
