  1. Hi there I am starting my EE and my topics is " To what extent does the marketing mix benefit Apple to dominate in the tablet market? I was just wondering if someone could help me with the analytical tools I could use in my essay and btw we can use the tools from outside . Thank you !! #extendedessay #ibsurvival #business
  2. French Revolution History IA Formulating my question for my HL History IA... The American Revolution played a significant role in starting the French Revolution. To what extent were its ideological influences greater than its economic influences? I'm really interested in the link between the American and French Revolution, the influence figures like Jefferson and Franklin had on France. But I know that this topic is still huge and also not talked much about...I can find lots of primary sources but not secondary ones or historiography. Can anyone give me some advice on it???
  3. Hey! Does anyone have any advice on how to format a solid ESS EE? My topic is on how ocean acidification affects coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean. I have no idea how to write my structure or arguments.
  4. Sooo I've been juggling a couple of ideas but my first was to analyse Avatar: The Last Airbender as a EE in Film. That was pretty quickly rejected because of the fact that writing an EE in a course that isn't offered in your school is just a really bad idea... I got really discouraged after something I was so excited to do was rejected flat out. Anyhow, I'm now writing my EE in Lang and Lit and analyzing ads. My research question is something along the lines of: To what extent are traditional gender roles projected in contemporary America through Super Bowl commercials? It has been approved, but I'm not incredibly excited for it, I mean it's cool but what can be cooler than ATLA, right? That's why I wanted to see if it would still be possible to analyze some global issue, even the representation of women, for example, in ATLA as a Lang and Lit EE. I mean, it's very similar to what I'm doing now, but something I'm much more excited about. I figured it'd be best to ask the IB community before pushing the idea further with my school. Any opinions/suggestions? TLDR: can I write an analysis of avatar: the last airbender for my Lang and Lit extended essay?

Please help me I want to make sure that it's a good chemistry topic and should I continue or not and please if yes tell me some variables to change to my experiment interesting.
  6. Hi all! So basically, I had a topic ready for my EE, but then my teacher, who is also my EE mentor, decided that she wanted to put the book that I am researching for my EE as a free-choice for my English class, Little did I know, there is a new rule stating that we can't write EE's on books that we analyze in class, so now I have to change my topic and I need help. I was thinking of doing something on how eating disorders are portrayed in literature, and thus focusing on couple of literary works. Please, if you are a genius and now how to formulate EE questions, and/or know of a good book about eating disorders, please help me out. I will be forever grateful! I wish u all the luck (cause we're IB students and we need it).

  10. Hey there, My EE is in Swedish B and I have my RQ as 'How does X Hip hop rapper from 1990s respective to X Hip hop rapper from 2010s use 'the sociolect' to clarify messages?' I tried translating it to English but instead of 'the sociolect' I have actually mentioned the sociolect itself and the rappers namnes as well. I decided to use 3 lyrics (as artifacts) of each rappers and I was supposed to analyse the vocabulary/word choices, then compare them. I have a total of 3 books to support me (excluding other internet resources), where one of them is a researcher into this specific sociolect and the other is a researcher of sociolinguists. My RQ is more appropriate for category 2b yet I keep finding myself confused on 'what type of analysis' this is expected to be if its 2b. Content analysis? Analytical analysis essay? To clarify my aim: The language/sociolect that is used is part of these rappers culture, so it should be relevant to Cat. 2b. Through the analysis, I aim to show the cultural nature of the rappers evidently through their word choices. Should I observe and choose words/phrases that reveal the attitude and every other cultural nature of the rappers culture or did I misunderstand something and losing focus on the category? Could you possibly provide me an example of how it could approximately be written like through a paragraph or essay sample? Cat 2b: The essay should be an analysis of a more general cultural nature but specific to a country or community where the language is spoken. Essays of a general cultural nature must be based on specific cultural artifacts. Would warmly appreciate any answers
  11. Hello everyone, I have to propose EE topics in a few different subjects in a couple of days and I'm struggling a bit. I've narrowed down my subjects to ESS, Biology and Chem, I just don't know whether the topics are too broad. I was considering writing about the following for each subject: For ESS, the effectiveness of a specific species different conversation efforts For Biology, the buildup of micro-plastics in organisms through the tropic levels (idk for sure what experiment i could do) For Chemistry, the water quality of two different bodies of water by my house and its effect on biodiversity I'm open to change, so feel free to reply with any questions, comments, or concerns, all input is appreciated!
  12. Hey all, just hoping to get some help regarding my extended essay topic. I'm currently doing my extended essay research question on To What Extent Did the American Red Cross Impact World War One Europe? I've been ok-ed by my teachers for this topic and have been chugging along. I just got my hands on the extended essay guide course companion book and read through some parts, and looked around online for additional information. My problem is I'm starting to think my topic can't really be looked at from other angles. All my research blatantly shows they had a large impact, how would I argue against that or view it from another angle? I was thinking about maybe writing something about how they compared to other humanitarian aid organizations in that area, maybe find some information on how they did stacked up to others? I'm really not sure so I'm hoping some smart people here can give me some guidance. If possible I'd rather not overhaul my EE topic to something super different as I've already sunk 10 hours into this, and don't want it to be for nothing. Thanks!
  13. We all know that Extended Essay is something we have to write in IB but I've been having difficulties figuring out if the topics I want to write about are accepted and which category they belong to. Human trafficking Theories about incidents such as Princess Diana's death About a specific serial killer Mental breakdown among teenagers Psychopaths and how their brain works theory about life Abortion Rape After Life
  14. Hello, my name is Martina and I really need someone to help me with the EE, since my supervisor is avoiding me. The subject I chose for the EE is biology. I'd like to come up with an experiment that would allow me to talk about human physiology, but without involving people. (i did the same for the IAs in bio and chem by using enzymes and antacids) I'm now thinking about using visking tubes for my experiment. They could represent either the gut or the dialysis machine. I suppose that I cannot use them as a gut model since I'm already talking about the digestive system in the abovementioned IAs. So my question is: How can I carry on an experiment on dialysis with visking tube? I could possibly use the substances that are present in the dialysis fluid (like sodium, potassium, calcium etc) and showing their diffusion through the tube as in the machine, but I wouldn't have variables. Do you guys have any ideas? I'd really appreciate your help, I'm really struggling
  15. Hey, im new here and I need some help. I asked my supervisor for it but... let's say he wasn't in the mood for that, I want to begin my EE but I'm not sure if my topic fits in the categories of the guide. Please, any recommendations, criticism or approvals are welcomed. The research question is " How far the jew idiosincrasy is reflected on the language used in the graphic novel Maus". I think this fits in category 2 but please help, i'm very lost :'c
  16. Hi everyone, I'm currently in the process of writing my EE and am doing a comparative study on two anti-war novels of WWII. My exact question is: "How and to what effect do Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut use black humour to satirise free will within Catch 22 and Slaughterhouse 5?" I'm at the point of finalising most of my research but am very concerned that everything I'm looking at might be completely useless and won't actually help me write the essay when it comes down to it. So, what I am hoping is that someone on here can provide some insight on what to research and think about in order to ensure that the research doesn't prove completely useless and what to look into to within each novel in order to better compare/contrast them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
  17. I told my teacher that I wanted to do my EE in English, using the work of Stephen King. I asked if it was better to talk about one book or to compare two different books, and he told me a comparison would be a more interesting choice. I was reading IT but still had to find the second book and the topic to compare. I wanted to take a completely different genre of book but that would be a lot harder and I don't have much time, so I might end up choosing another one of his books like The Shining or Pet Sematary. Regarless of what book I choose, I still don't know what topic to discuss in my EE. I was thinking about taking two characters or the way each book treats a certain theme, but I'm not sure. My question is: what are interesting topics/things to compare in horror/thriller books?
  18. Hey y'all, I have started my EE research and I was wondering if this is a good research question: "To what extent was the Great Purge (1936-1938) in the Soviet Union a result of Stalin and his Politburo?" The reason I chose this was because historians debate whether the cause of the purge was on the ruthless nature of Stalin and his politburo, or whether it was a combination of Stalin and regional leadership that pushed the purge too far. The difficulty I'm finding is that it's hard for me to create a single clear argument because there is so much debate on it and I don't think that one is necessarily right over the other. Help would be much appreciated.
  19. Hi guys, so this is my situation. for my extended essay, i planned to go for computer science subject on something about machine learning. My research question was about how effective a boosting model was in predicting stock prices. So i asked my teacher, and after reading my outline he said that he considered this an ITGS essay. What do you guys think? Can it be used for CS? What should i alter and how to improve? Thanks. P.S. i am also unsure of this topic is too advanced for me as i am not really experienced in the R language or programming in general, but have someone close who is very familiar.
  20. Okay so I am a first year iB diploma currently taking Chem, Maths, Bio HL and English, Italian and Geography SL and with 40/42 predicted grade. I now have to choose the subject and idea for my EE and since I'd like to do medicine then at uni my teachers have all advised me to get informed about the World Studies extended essay as they thing it will be a great opportunity to endorse a global health issue related topic. I now have two queries: Has anybody done a World Studies Extended essay on a health related topic and can give me advice? What would a possible medical student do as extended essay? Thanks so much xx
  21. How do you structure the body of an Extended Essay? I'm going to do mine in History, probably on Mao's 100 Flowers Campaign, and I'm unsure as to how to plan it. For example, if someone was doing their EE on the causes of WW1 (too broad of a topic, I know, but bear with me), would they do each body paragraph on a different cause? Or would some paragraphs try to disprove/argue against other paragraphs? How do you do it? If I have to do 8 paragraphs on 8 different causes, then I think I might struggle!
  22. So I will be doing my Extended Essay on either China's Cultural Revolution or before it; specifically, either the Red Guard, the Wuhan Incident or the Hundred Flowers Campaign. But I'm wondering where I could find primary sources. Are there any specific websites or books? Any online archives that I could access? Any pictures, newspaper/magazine articles, etc. from the time would be really useful! Also figures and statistics (of anything) would be great, but it's difficult to find them, especially for individual cities. I'm not sure about this, but I think that the Chinese government hasn't actually released any primary sources and so the only ones historians have are diaries, letters, photographs and interviews. I just want to verify this though as I don't remember the details!
  23. Hello, I was wondering what counts in the word count for a biology EE, does calculation, table titles, headings, appendix, etc count?
  24. Does anyone have an example of what an interim reflection for science could be?
  25. Hi! I am writing my EE in biology and I would really appreciate getting some advice from people who have done it in the past. What was hard for you in the process? How did you solve it? Is there anything that you think would have been helpfull to know earlier in the process? General advice and so on would be really helpfull for me both regarding the writing of the essay and the lab. Thank you
