  1. How do you structure the body of an Extended Essay? I'm going to do mine in History, probably on Mao's 100 Flowers Campaign, and I'm unsure as to how to plan it. For example, if someone was doing their EE on the causes of WW1 (too broad of a topic, I know, but bear with me), would they do each body paragraph on a different cause? Or would some paragraphs try to disprove/argue against other paragraphs? How do you do it? If I have to do 8 paragraphs on 8 different causes, then I think I might struggle!
  2. So I will be doing my Extended Essay on either China's Cultural Revolution or before it; specifically, either the Red Guard, the Wuhan Incident or the Hundred Flowers Campaign. But I'm wondering where I could find primary sources. Are there any specific websites or books? Any online archives that I could access? Any pictures, newspaper/magazine articles, etc. from the time would be really useful! Also figures and statistics (of anything) would be great, but it's difficult to find them, especially for individual cities. I'm not sure about this, but I think that the Chinese government hasn't actually released any primary sources and so the only ones historians have are diaries, letters, photographs and interviews. I just want to verify this though as I don't remember the details!
  3. Hello, I was wondering what counts in the word count for a biology EE, does calculation, table titles, headings, appendix, etc count?
  4. Does anyone have an example of what an interim reflection for science could be?
  5. Hi! I am writing my EE in biology and I would really appreciate getting some advice from people who have done it in the past. What was hard for you in the process? How did you solve it? Is there anything that you think would have been helpfull to know earlier in the process? General advice and so on would be really helpfull for me both regarding the writing of the essay and the lab. Thank you
  6. Hey guys, hope all of you are well! So I recently submitted by extended essay options (both of them being history related questions). I really want to refine my questions and get an insight on them, in regards to the questions being doable or not. Thanks in advance! Question 1: To what extent did Henry Ford and the Model T impact American society throughout the 1920s? Question 2: To what extent has advancements in technology led to developments within the automotive industry post World War Two?
  7. Hey! I am currently in the process of brainstorming and conducting preliminary research, and I've come up with this (physics ee): To explore the effect of various discharge cycles (the amount of resistance) on the power output of a photovoltaic solar cell (using a decade box) Would anyone have any advice as to a. whether this topic would work, and b. how do I approach this extended essay (essentially how do I approach a physics extended essay) I am sorry the questions are so broad but I would be happy with any sort of advice or guidance I can get. Thanks!
  8. Hello everyone I am willing to apply for medicine in the UK. I am aware of the competitiveness of this course and thus, I would like to maximize my chances of getting in. I know that medical universities perceive more favourably candidates with an EE in biology as it proves their interest in the area. However, to what extent is it taken into account? My point is, writing an EE in science and getting and A is difficult and definitely more risky in comparison to other subjects. My dilemma is: Is it better to write an EE in biology and risk getting a worse grade but having a science topic as an advantage? OR Would it be more secure for me to do an EE in English B, while in all likelihood putting the same effort (as in bio EE) it would provide a sure A? All in all, which option is more reasonable to choose? Do universities value more following your area of interest or do they firstly consider points? What do you think? Thank you for all your opinions!
  9. Hello. First time posting- I have thought of a Research Question, and was wondering if it was too broad. I would greatly appreciate any advice. "How does Niffenegger use stylistic and thematic devices to portray the motif of loss in the Time Traveler’s Wife?" Many thanks! P.S. In what topic would this EE, or a similar one, be under?
  10. Hi, I'm in the planning stage of my extended essay and I have decided to do Biology. I came up with one question: How does Aloe Vera compare with Oregon Grape Root as an antimicrobial to slow down bacteria growth? Please share your opinions and ideas below. Thank you very much. I would really appreciate it.
  11. Hey! I am confused about internal citations for the Extended Essay. I have internally cited primary and historiographical/secondary sources, but do I have to cite EVERYTHING? My EE is in history, and almost nothing is just "common knowledge." What do I do?
  12. So I have started to think about what I would like to do for my Extended Essay, we have to give in our ideas in around a weeks time. Just need some help refining my ideas, any tips would be appreciated! How has the Volkswagen Diesel Emission Scandal impacted the brand image of Volkswagen (Related to Business Management) Comparing the speeches of Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump, and how the language impacted the election results (English Language and Literature) How can war be justified (History) Thanks in advance!
  13. Hi! I want to do my extended essay on proving Newton's law of cooling. I want to use different liquids and do an experiment in order to compare what the law says to the real life situation. I'm on Math HL and Physics SL and I'm not quite sure where this ee could fit. My preference is math, but I'm afraid that maybe it's too experimental. What do you think? Thank you!
  14. Hello everyone. Currently I'm trying to think of a topic and a research question for the extended essay. Among the 6 subject groups, only math(and maybe physics) is of interest to me, but right now I'm not sure if my topic would work well for me so I would like to ask you guys to pitch in your thoughts or suggestions on it. My idea is trying to derive a formula for any conic section that is in an angle using analytical geometry and loci, and maybe compare it with other methods like matrices or rotation functions. I don't have a lot of idea on matrices though I also want to try to use the applications of calculus, but i dont know where to start thanks for the help
  15. Am I allowed to use a source that is used in my History IA in my Extended Essay?
  16. Hi. I am an upcoming senior and I should have my EE done by the end of this summer. I am taking a psych course during the summer and got into DID or multiple personality disorder. My instructor is not answering my emails and I should start it ASAP, so do you guys think this research question is fine?? “To what extent does childhood trauma play a role in the development of dissociative identity disorder?” Thanks for the help
  17. Alguien habla español? Alguien que haya tomado Español Literatura? Que libros están leyendo? Alguien haciendo su Extended Essay en español?
  18. Hey, for my Extended Essay for History I want to write a comparative essay on Lenin and Stalin and the extent to which they followed Marxist ideology. Is this considered "trivial nature"? Also, how would I frame my question. I also want to utilise case studies from Hitler/Mussolini's reign to demonstrate that a lot of their policies were similar or even the same as Stalin/Lenin's. Some ideas I had were. How successful were both Lenin and Stalin in following Marxist Ideology? To what extent were both Lenin and Stalin implement Marxist ideology after the fall of Tsarist Russia in 1917?
  19. I'm writing an extended essay on a literary device that Atwood uses in The Handmaid's Tale and The Penelopiad in reference to the latter. There are no outside sources on this device and I have heard or seen no mention of it anywhere after consulting the internet, IB staff at my school, and my (well-read and sharp) English teacher. I'm not going to say the device on here because it would take a lot of explaining and it would dilute the focus of my question -- Because I am writing a literature extended essay on an original idea and its application in one novel without relying on external literary criticism or sources (since there are none), would I be fine with just citing the book and three to four literary device sites (not for the term I'm studying, but for supplementary definitions)? So you know I'm not going to screw up because of the device itself, I should mention that my English teacher thinks my idea valid. I clearly define my interpretation of this literary phenomenon in the introduction and analyze its purpose throughout the essay. You can message me privately if you want to know what it is, but I didn't want it to detract from the focus of the question. Thanks.
  20. Hi! I have some questions about the EE. I am doing my EE in Spanish A Literature HL. I already have the books I want to analyze, my question and my supervisor accepted it. I want to analyze the use of setting of two different books. This is the research title nd the research question I want to work on: Research Title: Una exploración, comparación y análisis de los espacios diegéticos en dos novelas, Pedro Páramo y Cien años de soledad Research Question: ¿Hasta qué punto los espacios diegéticos pueden considerarse personajes en las novelas Pedro Páramo y Cien años de soledad? Now, the questions... Do the quotes count as words in the 4,000 words? How many paragraphs (approximately) does a 4,000 word essay look like? Do I need to add reference for a Language EE?
  21. Hey Guys, So I am at that time in my junior year where I have to propose three extended essay research questions but I have no idea what to do. I wanna do it in English, Visual Arts or Art History and about something related to women deprivation/representation, segregation or something similar to that. Do you guys have any ideas for my research question? I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance!
  22. Hi guys, So I'm starting to stress a little since I have to finish my EE proposal by tuesday and I'm yet unsure what topic/subject I should do it in. I know I'll be doing it in one of my HL subjects so therefore either English, Geography or Theatre however I haven't been able to decide which yet. Although we're often told to focus it on an area related to what we want to do in uni, I will be studying in spain where they don't take the topic of EE into consideration and therefore all that is valued is the points. Are there any subjects of those three that are perhaps easier to score higher in? Since I have recently been to an MUN conference abroad, I had to debate about topics of global importance and one of the issues in my comittee was "eradicating the practice of child marriage", I became highly intrigued by the issue of child marriage in different regions and thought that I could maybe orientate this towards geographical patterns and base my EE around this topic, however right now this is obviously extremely vague. Any suggestions on how I could link this topic more to geography in order to be able to use it for my extended essay? Thanks in advance, I'd be more than happy to take any advice or suggestions. Ellen xx
  23. Hi everyone! I have to choose a topic for my extended essay, and I was kind of thinking about doing it on stereotypes and how they affect society. For me,this topic falls into the English B spectrum, so I'll be doing it in that subject. The only problem I have with this topic is that I don't think it is the right one. I really want to do it on stereotypes, but I have to narrow it down a bit more. Do you have any idea how I could do this? Please feel free to give your opinion on my topic and suggest new ones!
  24. I want to do a music EE on Chopin's masurkas, i dont know where to go from here help me
  25. Hey people, In few days I need to hand in my EE, the problem is I have done 3800 words but my teacher told me I won't pass because I am missing the artifact. I was thinking about analyzing few punk songs (my theme is actually talking about the influence of the movement on people throughout the years) and now I don't know is that a good idea? First I was thinking about documentary movies but they are all crappy quality and mostly don't show any influence on the society and now I'm stuck here without an artifact... what would you recommend me to do?
